Surviving a Truck Breakdown in Harsh Winter Camping

- Friday night, after work I headed into the Pillsbury State Forest. It was about 8 pm when I pulled into the equestrian campsite. The strong winds coupled with below zero temperatures made for an extremely fridged winter night. Thankfully I had two full 20-pound propane cylinders for the furnace, and a full tank of gas in the generator. I knew as long as everything was running properly, I would stay warm. The main road in the forest was plowed, but I planned on finding a dispersed site off a trial that had not been plowed. I thought I would wake up early Saturday morning and find a dispersed campsite in the daylight. I had planned to use the drone to capture video of my truck on the snowy trail, but the universe had a different plan in store.
Friday night the temperature dropped to -21degrees. When I attempted to start the truck, the Weather Channel was saying it was -17 degrees. Because of the extreme cold temperatures, the fuel in my truck gelled. I attempted to start the truck at least 10 times before finally admitted to being defeated my mother nature.
Unfortunately, this isn't the first time my truck has gelled up. I have been seeing this problem more and more over the last 4 or 5 years. From now on I will be running #1 in the truck all winter. I don't think corn and soybean oil-based biodiesel are capable of flowing well in our cold Minnesota winters.
I hope you enjoy the video. I really appreciate all the positive uplifting messages I have been receiving. It's your kind words that keep me motivated!
I'll see you again next week.
Kenny

Kenny you made me burst out laughing. My husband of 25 years passed away in August. When we ran our construction company, if it was cold out he would sing “We’re having a heat wave….” to the guys 😂😅😂😅😂😅 First time in a while a memory made me smile and laugh and not burst out in tears. Thank you!!
Thank you for sharing that. It brings a huge smile to my face hearing memorys about loved ones. I'm sorry for your loss. It must be so fresh yet. I hope you know your message made the weekend worth it.

Now Mr Kenny...I would feel honored and I think most people would, to help you out. FYI if you're in Wisconsin anywhere near me...I would help you in a heartbeat! You bring such joy in your videos...I don't think you realize! You brighten my life! And although you ARE Kenny of all trades...sometimes everyone needs a lil help. Thank you so much for the kind words.

Kenny, you are the Bob Ross of camping. I would have been frantic in that situation... you made soup. That's awesome!

OMG, I was just telling my wife how Kenny reminded me of Bob Ross. His voice is so calming. When he finishes CZcams he could have a career in audio books. 😁

I second that motion! I sincerely agree with you david, that would make a wonderful world! 🌎
I'm 71 years old. My wife and I started camping when we got married 50 years ago and we never stopped. I really enjoy your videos. YOU always seem so up beat all the time. Up until 4 years ago I lived in Minnesota. I now live in Arkansas. Watching you battle that cold brings back a lot of memories. All bad. Hahaha.... You strike me as a really nice person. I will continue to watch your videos. Thanks.
I agree with you leo! 🤗 🤗 🤗
I don’t miss living in Alaska and dealing with subzero temps.
Your amazing, your attitude is refreshing
Here in Florida, we complain when it dips into the 50s.
That squeaky snow and a cracked tooth.. oh my... you're impressive.
Well I'll be dipped.... The only vehicle I've ever had that started EVERY time, was my Jeep TJ with the inline 4.0 in it. Those engines had their reputation for a reason. Thanks for the video!

I'm glad I don't have to deal with winters anymore , retirement full time off grid RV life is great . No utilities ,taxes or house up keep .
Kenny, you gotta rely on folks sometimes , give your friend a call,
Hey ken, just a suggestion
Some of those blue paper shop rags, or even a paper towel, wrapped around the bleeder when you crack it saves the diesel from dropping into the ground.
I know it's not really a big deal, but it shows conscientiousness.
Just saying.
Every bit of that diesel fuel ended up in the groundwater.
Just picture it....

Oh yeah! I would be interested in that!!!
Ken,
My dad suffered the same fate as you with his Dodge diesel. When I got his truck camper, I had to find a truck. I found a used 2017 Ford F-250 supercab, 6.2 liter gas engine. I have the same Mr. Heater Buddy and an electric 1500 watt Mr. Heater. Were you ever in Scouts, a leader? Always be prepared. GLHF
You are a pleasure to watch. Whatever is, is. You don't complain about anything, you keep going forward. Thank you. Blessings from Michigan.
I’m originally from and live in southern Arizona. Hearing you walk on the snow is like ptsd flashbacks 😂😂 I don’t miss it
The diesel heater in my Sprinter van stopped working at -10 degrees recently, fortunately the van still started. Going to add Hotshot Anti-gel additive to the diesel and install heater tape on the fuel line and filter for the future.
Great job getting home! Those diesels can be a bear sometimes.
Man... As a fellow Minnesotan, I feel this predicament so much! We're on the temperature upswing at this point, but the sound of the snow crunching gave me flashbacks from the cold snap!
WOW, sounds HORRIBLY COLD!!
Well its good that you have the front bumper generator, then have the magnetic oil pan heater, heating up the oil in the bottom, that then warms up the engine block and the radiator fluid, and the excess engine heat warms up the batteries. Any diesel gas magnetic tank heater (that could also gel up) keeps the diesel fuel warm, and ungel the tank and filter.
There are also those electrical heating wraps for water pipes, ... not sure how you could wrangle that in a tight spot, but it could also keeps the fuel lines warm and flowing, along with the fuel tank heater and the engine oil pan heater.
Glad she came around and you made it. You considered getting rid of the generator some day if you get new power sources...I'd keep it. It was a hero this trip. Cold does things as you very well know. Take care.
Oh DEFINITELY, KEEP the GENERATOR Kenny!! 🌲 🏞 🌲 🌲 🌲
I bought one diesel truck back in 2006, after a terrible elk hunting experience in the snow I went back to big block gas power on every truck since. Glad you got it running without a lot of effort. Curiosity question, why do you not use the electric start on the generator? At 74 with 2 bad shoulders push button start is a must for me. Great channel, I just ran across it a couple of weeks ago.
My battery went dead last year. I never got around to replacing it.
@@KennyOfAllTrades Oh NO Kenny! How horrible for you! 😍

I dress for MY comfort and strangers see me and they always make rude comments. Hahahaha! 😅 😃 😂
So glad you mad eit home brother. Hope you have a good week and get that tooth taken care of as well. Take care!
Ah, the joys of diesel during a MN winter.
I hate asking for help too. It's a Midwest thing but sometimes you gotta ask for the help to got-r done.
Wild rice soup...solid choice on a cold day.
I used to live in Randal, MN (straight south of Pillager) and have hunted and hiked the Pillsbury many times. Good choice and close to home.
Coffee is the most important part of any morning project.
Wow, that little heater makes that generator grunt a little.
Nothing worse than Holiday fuel.
Fun vid this week Kenny.
Glad to see the fix worked
Your channel is my favorite, I smile all the way through, unless your video is about Bigfoot and you’re walking around in the dark with scary music on!….anyhoo I admire your cleverness, your ability to get out of sticky situations, and your ever present positive attitude. Oh and that Soup! 😋😋
When I lived in Hibbing, I had an 01 Ram with the 5.9 in it for a while. Thankfully I had stations in town that sold straight #1. I remember that one year, 06-07, I had like four nights where I wouldn’t shut it off due to -60 temps. I don’t miss driving a furnace, even being in South Dakota now!
But I’d quit getting any kind of fuel at Holiday stations. My buddy ran their winter blend in his 7.3 and gelled up every time.
Always enjoy your videos Kenny. My dad and I watch every one.
Just let it idle and don't shut it off. As a tank commander, we would leave them running 24/7 during cold weather trianing, but I had 300 gallons of diesel too.
What fuel were you using at the time though? Current JP-8 doesn't have the waxing and gelling issues like diesel.
A friend had an old school diesel Lincoln. He left it idling all night so it wouldn't gel up.
Maybe you need to add “Be kind, be honest and stay positive!” to your closing line! It’s great that you can share these adventures with all of us but still enjoy your peace and solitude! Everyone wins! Next week is suppose to be warmer! Did you end up and eat those beef sticks you found in the fire pit?
On my I forgot about them. They are in my truck right now! Lol. Maybe the barn cats will eat them . 🤔
You said you were saving them for later!😂
Hello again, Kenny, two things you might try. First any soup you make, try cooking some bacon and adding it and the drippings to your soup for extra flavor. You don't need much. Years ago, when I had my early Ford F350 with the diesel, I had an old mechanic show me to wrap my filters with an electric battery blanket. I used a 110 volt unit and used an inverter. I could run the inverter from the 12 volts when the truck was running and plug it in to the generator when parked. It never gave off a ton of heat, just enough to keep the temp above gelling the fuel.
Awesome suggestions. I was eating the soup last night and thought......this would be out of this world with bacon. Lol
A good positive attitude, hope you took sunscreen to protect against that blazing heatwave 😊.
As they say, faint heart never won his fair maiden. Well done and really enjoyed. From a very windy 🇬🇧
Your knowledge is invaluable. Wish I knew more. I'm afraid I'd be stranded.
I KNOW that I WOULD be stranded!! 😣

I have not seen many sleds this year. Our snowfall totals are really down. It was super quiet I the forest.
Thank you Kenny for another suspenseful camping video. You are far braver than I would be. Even as a Minnesota 'boy', you wouldn't find me out there in those temperatures camping. "No, Siree Bob!" Thankfully, "We're havin' a heat wave" 🤣and are up to 32F ! Come on spring!

Good video. I figured you made it back home, and your knowledge as well as your “McGyver” problem-solving abilities showed well. But I could not have enjoyed a weekend the way you did. I’d have been too on edge and worried about the engine not working, and possibly being stuck. So I appreciate and commend your ability to keep calm and level headed. Thanks again for the video.
I was glad you showed that you got home safe it was a good video even though you had to work on the truck. Have a great week!
Hearty folks up there in Minnesota. You made that look easy by the way.

Kenny was making his own VGG video this week. Now I gotta watch Grumpy Old Men after listening to you sing lol.
One of my all time favorites! I was hoping someone would have recognized that. I can see the plow truck burying John Gustafson's car every time I hear that song.

I keep showing your videos to my wife, trying to convince her that the camping season doesn't have to end on September 30. Maybe we'll keep this one quiet. 😁
Good luck with that Tom! 😅😃😂
Thank goodness you made it home!!🎉
Wow. Glad you have the knowledge on a fix.
Well done...didn't panic...first order of business! I spent the bulk of my career servicing lighthouses and mount top radio repeater stations on the West Coast of Canada. We NEVER had issues with fuel until 'bio-diesel' showed up - gelled constantly. Of course, we had to run heat tape on the the tank farms which created a parasitic load on the already small power supply (think HATZ) - causing more fuel to be used - yada yada yada. Stick with #1 diesel and cetane boost. ALSO - stick with your good instincts...Cheers!
This is so nice of you to say to kenny, I sincerely appreciate you gordaro, THANK YOU again!! 🤗🤗🤗

Kenny that soup looked delicious. We took a F350 sw 7.3 gas with a Arctic Fox 15,000 miles to Alaska it had all the power we needed for the mountains it's not diesel torque but sufficient plus a whole lot lighter ,you do a great job .❤️
That will be my next truck. It's goons be awhile though. I would love to find one in about 8 orv9 years. Something 10 years old with 150 to 180k miles. That will be the truck for me.
Kenny, your video’s are enjoyable to watch. However, one of your key abilities each week is communicate calmly, convincingly enough to make me feel what you are experiencing as you camp. For example, I found myself routing for you as you thawed out your pickup. Also, hearing your feet in the snow as you walked in the dark, made me wonder what was coming around the next corner and hill too! Finally, as others mentioned, your attitude seems fabulous! Looking forward to your next video!
Thank you for the kind words and motivation. I really appreciate that.
Oh yes joe, Kenny is just FABULOUS! 😍 🤗 🤗 🤗
Kenny, I always use some Power Service diesel kleen, specifically the anti gel mixture every tank, regardless of the winter blend. I usually go half a bottle per tank. Haven't had any problems with fuel gelling on my diesel even in the sub freezing temperatures in New England. Might be overkill, but it sure beats being stranded. Glad you made it home!
Didn't know Power Service Diesel Kleen had anti-gel. Interesting. I thought it was just anti-microbial. In my 10 years of ownership of a 2000 VW Jetta TDI, I religiously used the Power Service white container product, Diesel Fuel Supplement, for the anti-gel and lubricity components. Living in Chicago it doesn't get as cold as Minnesota, but we certainly see some days below zero Fahrenheit. I did have some dicey days over all those years but thankfully I never needed Power Service 9-1-1.
@@anthonyc1883 Well maybe I’m mixing the names of the stuff, but I believe the properties of the white bottle are pretty much the same as the regular kind. Only difference is you get the anti gel properties in the white bottle.
Being stranded is NO fun!! 😲😨🙃
