Today I am making a Low Country Recipe, Gullah Red Rice; a Traditional and Classic Rice Dish that is served in Savannah, Georgia, Charleston, South Carolina and that part of the States. It has Smoked Sausage, Tomatoes, and a sweetness to it!
It is full of flavor and bursting with Tomato Goodness; makes a great Side Dish or a Dish by itself!

1 large yellow or white onion, diced
1 green bell pepper (or any color), diced
1 (12 oz) package andouille sausage, sliced rounds (or any smoked sausage)
1/4 cup canola or vegetable oil
2 (6 oz) cans tomato paste
4 tsp white sugar
1 tbsp onion powder
1 tbsp garlic powder
1 tbsp kosher salt
1 tbsp white or black pepper
2 cups uncooked parboiled rice, rinced
2 cups chicken broth or water
Parsley Flakes, for garnish (optional)
Preheat Oven to 350 Degrees
In a large pot over medium-high heat, add oil and bring to temperature. Add onions, bell pepper, and sausage; cook for 3-4 minutes until vegetables are translucent. Next add and stir in both cans of tomato paste, sugar, onion powder, garlic powder, salt and pepper, then add and stir in the rice; cook uncovered for 4-5 minutes (stir occasionally). Turn the heat off and add in chicken broth or water and stir to combine. Cover the pot and transfer it into the oven, bake for 30 minutes. After 30 minutes, remove from the oven and fluff the rice. Turn the oven off, cover the pot, put the rice back into the oven and continue baking for 10 more minutes. Remove from oven, pour the red rice into a bowl, sprinkle with parsley flakes (if using), serve and enjoy!

I’m from Savannah but I live in Texas now and I always wanted to make this because it’s one of my favorite from growing up. My brother urged me to learn how to make this and I found your video and I did. My family loved this and now I’m on red rice duty for the holidays. I used hillshire farms beef smoked sausage in mine. My people have a similar dish. But, it also has sage and thyme. Then it was topped with an egg. I can't say the original name because it doesn't transfer into English. Sunrise/sunset is as close as I can get. Isnt it amazing how food tells a story. Or connects cultures 😲😊
