To Be Clear: A Shih Tzu can bring you much delight, but they also come along with some particularly odd behaviors. If you have a Shih Tzu, you might have noticed some weird behaviors that they keep doing over and over, and you might be wondering what these behaviors mean. In this video, we will talk about 5 Odd Shih Tzu Behaviors, and go in-depth, explaining why your Shih Tzu does them, and what it means. Let’s get started.
    Number 1: Staring Intensely.
One of the oddest things your Shih Tzu might do is staring at you intently, giving you that feeling that they might be judging you, or definitely have a lot to say to you. While it might seem odd to you why they’re doing it, you should know that it’s most likely from a place of love, not because they hold any bad intent towards you. Your Shih Tzu is simply staring at you because they love you and trust you, and staring at you just makes them happy. It could also be because they’re trying to read you and understand what you want from them, as they tend to do everything they can to please you. Some Shih Tzus though, do it because they want something from you, or they just need you to give them attention. No matter why your Shih Tzu might be doing it, in the end, there’s nothing you can do about it, and you just have to get used to those eyes following your every move.
    Number 2: Digging the Bed.
Making a comfortable shelter was one of the behaviors dogs had to learn while in the wild, such as digging a shallow hole in the ground before going to bed. These behaviors are still being done by different dogs today, Shih Tzus included, even though they are no more in the wild. For different Shih Tzus though, this behavior could mean different things. Some Shih Tzus might be doing this just out of curiosity and the need to explore their environment. While others might be doing it because of anxiety and the amount of excess energy they have. Since this behavior is not particularly dangerous, you can choose to ignore it, or you can still decide to observe and find out why your Shih Tzu is doing it, just in case you might need to take them to the vet, or get some more toys for playtime.
    Number 3: Picky Eating.
To get your Shih Tzu to eat, you consistently have to add new toppings, spice things up or present their food in a more appetizing way. If you don’t do this, they either just sniff and walk away, or they nibble on it just a little before eventually giving up. Most Shih Tzus are picky eaters, and it’s a real problem that different owners have to deal with on a daily basis. There’s really no particular reason why Shih Tzus do this, but most times, it’s usually because of an underlying problem, such as health issues or dental problems. If your Shih Tzu is being picky just because they can, it’s most likely because you as the owner has encouraged the behavior, or approached it from a perspective that it’s not a serious issue. To get them to stop, you’ll have to take different approaches until you find something that works. You can try scheduling their meals, monitoring how much calories they take in from treats or snacks, as it can fill them up quickly, and if it comes to it, make their food better.
    Number 4: Barking Excessively.
Having a Shih Tzu that barks all the time can be very annoying, especially when they don’t listen to you. They are different reasons why your Shih Tzu barks a lot, and some of them include, lack of exercise, loneliness, to get your attention, or to alert you. Some of this barking is perfectly fine, but some can be controlled. You can start exercising your Shih Tzu more to reduce excess energy, which in turn will reduce barking. You can start ignoring them if they’re barking for attention, instead of giving them time, and you can train your dog to deal with being alone for a certain period.
    Number 5: Eating their Poop
Eating their poop, or caprophasia is something nearly all Shih Tzus do, and it’s absolutely disgusting. Female Shih Tzus that are nursing may lick the feces of their puppies in order to maintain a clean den. This behavior is thought to have evolved as a way to protect their puppies in the past, and is now done instinctively. Puppies that see their mum doing it, do it in turn. Another reason, a subtle one, is that they fear being punished. Shih Tzus are intelligent, and if they do their business in the house, and get punished for that, they’ll do it again, but this time, they’ll eat it, to avoid being punished. That’s why positive reinforcement is the best way to train your dog, not punishing them negatively. A strong “no” when you see them doing it, is enough to correct the behavior.

I have had Shih Tzus for the last 35 years, and I have loved every one of them fiercely! They are so loving! They can also be sassy! Mine have all eaten poop, barked a lot, stared at me, and through all of my surgeries, they stayed next to me and comforted me. We have a 5 month old little girl, and we just love her! She’ll probably be the last, because of our age. We are enjoying her company and she makes us laugh!

I have had four Shih Tzu’s in 36 years. I currently have a 9 month old puppy. I got him from a reputable breeder but he was eating his poop. I was horrified. None of the others ever did that. I got him to stop, here’s how! I carry dog bacon with me and when he poops I act surprised and yell BACON! He forgets the poop completely and gets excited about the bacon.

Not weird for a puppy to eat their own poop. I heard it’s for survival so predators can’t find them when young.

My Shih tzu is 13. He is the most well behaved little guy who thinks he’s a big dod. At the dog park if other dogs start to wrestle or seem like they are fighting he runs right over no matter the size of the dogs and gets in between and breaks it up. People are amazed that he does it. He has never eaten poop does not bark and he tells me exactly what he wants. He sits in front of me and talks in his way. He’s not afraid of anything is super smart. When I’m in the pool he volleys a beach back and forth with me and rarely misses. He is the best dog ever. Calm smart great personality.. everyone loves him! It’s a great breed. ❤❤

I had my shih Tzu Nena for 17 years .when she passed away, she took a piece of my heart with her. Three years later , I got another Shih Tzu. Her name is Maggie and I can't believe the differences between them. Maggie was a terrorist who destroyed everything and anything she could get her paws on. Nena never ever destroyed anything. Nena had a normal appetite this one does not refuse any of her meals (all cooked specifically for her) and begs for more. Nena was not a talker yet Maggie is a great communicator. Nena was affectionate but, needed her space. Maggie takes up all my space on the couch and will not leave my sight. I simply adore her.😢

I hope you have many good years together. They're deserving of our some cases.
Well, I'll just speak for myself sometimes. I got the feeling that I don't deserve my dog.
And in a lot of ways, it's true. Someone wantsomeone once stole my dog.
Because I was homeless. Rationalizing that my dog, Charlie would be better off. Without me, they chose to steal him. And though I had no home and I had no transpoit took me 36 days To track Charlie to another city where I found him and I had a lot of support from people and businesses.
That knew, but my Charlie. Was stolen, buy a McDonald's manager. And yes I went through two pair of Of shoes trying to track Charlie down when I found Charlie.

My shituzu dogs the bed and eats poop. He’s not picking although he’s only 5 lbs and doesn’t eat much. He sometimes stares a little bit when people he loves come over and he wants to play or if he wants to be picked up. He also turns over his bed. Also he will try to tie whoever is taking him potty up with his leash (he’s a puppy) and his not potty trained yet. He loves getting tangled in peoples feet and try’s to trip people sometimes basically because he wants attention. He’s adorable though! Love him. They might have some odd behaviors but there amazing tiny loving dogs!

We found a mangy, scabby, long haired dog. The hair had matted and was missing here and there. Took it to the vet. The vet didnt know what ti think. He shaved all its hair. It was soooo full of fleas. Turned out to be a girl. She had scabies also. After a couple of months of all sorts of treatments she is now free of skin issues and has had her hair grow out evenly everywhere. The vet says she is a shih tzu. She definitely starea intensly. But she never barks. Never barks ever. She is an adult though she is the size of an average cat. The hair seems ti be growing like these shih tzu you are showing. Never had such a silent dog...

It’s heartbreaking for any human to verbally terrify their dog to the point the animal believes it has to eat its own feces to hide it from you. Yes, that often is cause for that behavior. Plz Take a deep breath folks, dogs are not capable of malice if they pooped inside it’s an accident, and positive reinforcement works. A treat offered immediately after they poop outside and a gentle tug away from it will teach them it’s ok to let it go. Watch some Cesar Milan videos for more tips.

I have two shih tzus, a brother and sister. While they do stare intensely and dig the bed or any blanket they can find, it is just instinct. Theyare adorable, very smart, loving (especially with children) and funny! They do not eat their poop. I found they barked a lot when growing up as they are very alert. Yelling at them is not the answer BUT if I tell them "good dog" or " thank you" they stop barking! These little dogs are fearless, loyal, very protective and playful. They like a routine and need plenty of exercise on a leash. Before these two I had Doberman, Rottie, Akita and other large dogs. But these are " big dogs" in a small body. Finally mine are not picky eaters but like variety. Afer I put their bowls down they wait until I say "Bon Apetite" and amazingly do not eat out of each others bowls or take others toys. If you can seing it, two is better than one because they can get separation anxiety when you leave.

I've had people and vets tell me it's their diet and they aren't getting enough vitamins and minerals. So we bought them expensive vitamins and they kept going. Then we tried products you put on their food and it's supposed to stop them from eating poop and none of that worked either. Basically it's a get there b4 they do affair in our home.

@@ahimmeroder5817 I have heard about the pineapple remedy as well. Can't verify if it works or not.
But a note on the pineapple use for poop eaters: I read that only works if it's fresh pineapple because it is an ingredient in fresh pineapple, but it is destroyed when pineapple is canned. The pineapple solution would only work on dogs who eat their own poop or other dogs' poops they live with. You could control the diets of the other dogs in your home by feeding them pineapple, too. But, this solution would be of no help if you were taking your dog to a park, for example, and it ate a dog's poop there.

My dog only eats Cesar wet dog food and you must change up the flavor every day. And he eats eukenuba dry small breed dog food lamb flavor n beef flavor mixed. Would you want to eat the same thing every day of your life. I just look at it this way, that my Cocco James is just very very smart. He will not eat if he isn't hungry. She also is a non-factor when it comes to getting along with other dogs and pets in general, meaning that it's up to the other dog wether they will get along because she is very friendly. Thinking about it, my Shih tzu first stared at me. A Lot. I stared him back. Then he used to start to grumble a bit, and then he sat on his hind legs! And that's his way to comunicate me that he wanted treats or biscuits! 😂
We was scratching the bed but then he lean on the place he scratched. When I approaced to the bed and used my finger to scratch the bed, he was going to get kinda upset and started to "attack" me (for joke, of course).
When we had, for lunch / dinner, tortellini with cream and ham, he wasn't eating them because tortellini tend to stick to each other, and a dog with a short mouth with beard have issues. So, I told him "Come with me!", he followed me, I pick one tortellini for time, feeding him directly to his mouth with my hands and he ate them all! He was NEVER picky, he ate literally everything! I remember when I was eating salami sandwich, he stared at me because he wanted some. So I gave him a piece with bread and salami, but he ate Salami only, leaving the bread apart. So, I told him "If you don't eat the bread too, I won't give you nothing more!". He fully understood me, and he fastly ate the bread too! 💓
He started to bark because he was REALLY STRONGLY territorial and he was kinda aggressive with strangers. He hated in particular some of my/my sister's friend and... in hindsight... my shih tzu was TOTALLY RIGHT to hating them!
He never ate his poop. Just once, I was really not well and I stayed in my bed for almost 2 days... I saw my shih tzu drinking his pee. I was scared! But then, I saw he had totally no water to drink. My father forgot to give him water and take him to do his walk.... 🤦‍♂🤦‍♂🤦‍♂so I fastly gave him water and cleaned up his pee, even If I was in really bad status. That's not a odd behaviour, that was only survival instinct. So, since my father turned out to be unreliable, I was extra-careful about his food and his water, he never drank his pee again.
By the way, thanks to your video, I got all my memories back. My precious memory of my Jordy.

I call it snoof'n but it's really a kind of like pfffff noise, like a fake sneeze that turns into a growl. he does that when he wants something and wants my attention immediately to get it. it's weird but cute.

My shih tzu do the bed “digging” because they both know it makes me laugh. So when they’re looking to play and want my attention, they start digging and barking. 🤣 Of course, my little girl will also just jump up on my chest when she wants my attention. She jumps on me and then gives me a kiss. And often times, she’ll just give me a kiss and then run off to play with her brother. 🥰
My shih tzu eat a raw diet and their treats are single ingredient real foods. They’re the least picky pups ever. They’re also not inclined to eat stuff just because it’s on the floor. They’re free fed with their kibble but they’re right on target with their weight.

I've been a petsitter for many years. I have met and interacted with lots of different breeds of dogs.
In all that time, I have had only 1 Shih Tzu who ate it's poop (out of dozens of clients with Shihs). Of all the dogs I've petsit, over many years, only 2 dogs ate poop. So, in my experience, I don't believe Shihs are more likely to be poop eaters than any other breed.
One of my clients' dog, the Shih, only ate her own poop. Another dog, a Lab mix, only ate other dogs' poop- but never his own.
I think there are several reasons dogs eat poop. I agree some puppies do grow up to do the same things they saw their mom do; but not all will.
For example, 4 of my clients are from one family, each with a Shih Tzu. Their 4 Shihs all had the same mom, but different dads. Only one out of those four dogs eats her poop (never other dogs' poop, always her own). So the theory that they do as mom did, doesn't hold true in this instance.
From my experience over the years, I don't believe that Shihs are more likely to eat poop than any other breed.
A moma dog cleaning her pups, and keeping their den clean is instinct, and every breed of dog moms do that.
I don't find Shih Tzus to be big barkers, either. When a person who's not a family member enters the yard or house, they do bark, but again, so do other breeds.
The Shihs I have petsit over the years have been friendly, loving and good with other dogs.
The only thing that I have seen that looks to me like it is a tendency of Shih Tzus, is allergies and eye and/or ear infections. I have several clients whose Shih Tzus have recurring eye & ear infections or allergies. I don't really know if that's an often occurring problem with Shih Tzus, or if I just happen to have a group of them who coincidentally have those problems.
I have a Shih Tzu/Bichon mix, and she has had no eye or ear infections, nor any allergies, is not a big barker, and is usually calm and quiet.

Our one rescue boy was plagued with severe allergy issues. I think it is common with the breed. I feel shih tzus are a very expensive breed to own because there may be a need for specialists like dermatologists or ophthalmologists. I have seen both for my shih tzus.
My current girl is 11 and her ears are fine (knock on wood) but in the past year or so she has developed issues around her eyes due to her love of rubbing her face. Turns into a bacterial infection that clears up and then flares again. Regular vet recomended genteal drops to see if thinning out the tears could help prevent these infections..

We definitely have had our hands full with these 2. We have been working with a trainer and things have gotten better but not perfect by far. I feel breeders should be more informative when it comes to a buyer purchasing litermates... as we purchased, fell in love, and then realized realized all these negative behaviors where with something called litermate syndrome so bad we have considered re-homing one or the other. 😢

@@shaily_modi_official oh yes, I’ve bn searching for a particular shih tzu trainer, then I’ve read a book about shih tzu training, from the best breeder/trainer (my son’s present), which helped me to understand my meeko’s mind better. When next aggressive growling happened I put her at the entrance of the house, isolated her from us, said no! stop it! Meeko bad girl!- with strong lower pitch voice and shut the door. In 3-5 minutes she started to push the door and barking excessively, demanding attention. I opened the door and repeated same words again but louder then left her alone, ignored her for 15 minutes. she was not barking but whining. That changed her behaviour dramatically. Isolation is a biggest punishment for her. Well, she is such a princess and it was my fault allowing her to be spoiled, treating her as a child.
Now she acknowledges that mummy is a head of the pack. The other day while walking she tried to lick some poo and as soon as I said no, stop it, meeko bad girl- she put her sweet head down, felt guilty and was walking submissively behind me. at home I left her alone for 5 minutes didn’t allow her to join us, she was still keeping her head down towards the corner, no barking nor whining. I thought finally I am at control lol we are improving, she is very sweet and intelligent doggy. We can dance, roll over, spin beside simple instructions like giving a pow, hi fives…. A trick is her favourite treat 😀
