Great illustration there, you and Pete in the canoe, of mutual respect and good manners. I finally learned that (when she got to be 7 or 8 months old) not to 'battle' with my pup. Me trying to force her to do things only makes her stubborn and willful, and we both end up frustrated. Over these months I have learned that I must be "calm, attentive, and polite" if I want my pup to become "calm, attentive, and polite". In fact, it finally got into my thick head that I am the one who needed to "come when called, sit still, and (especially) have good manners." Thanks, Stonnie.

My big boy lab just cannot cope without lots of exercise. He’s a gentleman most the time when tired. They have both learned that sticking close sometimes results in a game of fetch. They will do anything for a bumper or ball. Out here on our new property, I had to whistle them in many times a day. Finally, they learned that the fun place, the play place, the occasional and random treat place is near us. They stick close without the leash, without the kennel, and without constantly using a whistle.

I lost my dog yesterday :/ He was only 1year and 8months old german shorthair pointer. His name was Ori. The ball he was chasing, got into his trachea. That ball wasn't tennis ball, but smooth hard ball for pets, that sliped into his trhoat :( We rushed at the vet,but it was sunday, and I barely found a vet on duty. She gave him a sleeping injection, and tried to get the ball out of his mouth. She couldn't do it. It seemed to me,that she wasn't even qualifed for complicated situations, but only to give infusion and other easy things. Althouh she tried. When she noticed that the heart rate is slowing down, she gave him adrenaline injection. But his heart stopped. :( Cried all day about that.

So sorry to hear what happened.
You know, James Herriott tells a story about a time he came across a couple in distress by the side of the road. Their collie had a small ball lodged in his throat, and he couldn't breathe. Dr Herriott immediately jammed his fingertips hard into both sides of the dogs neck, and the ball popped out. (His finger pressure went into the sides of the neck right about where the trachea and ball were.) I am sorry to tell you this story, because it is too late for dear Ori. But maybe knowing this it will prevent other dogs from such a fate.

😥😢😭 one of my fears...Ive tried to teach myself the heimlich maneuver for this reason. Dogs can do really stupid things in the moment as they grow up. Its no surprise why dogs have large litters of puppies. Im amazed my youngest lab has made it to 12 months! The number of sticks, rocks, golf balls, and other objects that went right in his mouth 🤯! Im trying to be prepared, but I know I cant always prevent bad incidents. A day ago that same lab had a black walnut in his mouth! Those things are potentially toxic 🤯 if moldy. Among other stories, I had a friend tell me of their dog's recent emergency surgery to remove foreign objects from the intestine. Its one mortal test after the next!
Listen, I hope you get another dog. Previous dogs cant ever be replaced. Theyre a chapter of your life forever. You will be talking about Ori 20+ years from now. He's got his angel wings.
