- Global warming is here, and it is wreaking havoc on our planet. As we don’t seem to be curbing our pollution levels fast enough, some engineers have begun to think of other solutions to climate change such as geoengineering.
Geoengineering is a type of advanced environmental engineering that brings together science and technology to try to undo some of the harm we have caused to the planet.
It consists of a variety of techniques from cloud seeding to stratospheric aerosol injection. Geoengineering when put in practice seems straight out of a science fiction movie. But it is indeed happening today.
For instance, the United Arab Emirates is currently using drones to create artificial rain.
Cloud seeding can increase rainfall by 30 to 35 percent in a clear atmosphere. It can also clear fogs to improve visibility and reduce the size of hail and prevent hailstorms.
This may sound like an exciting development but it does come with its fair share of risks. In this video, we explore the advantages and disadvantages of cloud seeding and even look at some instances of cloud seeding gone wrong.

@@zerohour2703 stupidest comment of the day. Africa was always that way otherwise there wouldn't be that much sand in their deserts, sand that needs hundreds of thousands of years to form that way. Another thing to know is that not all of Africa is a desert, central and south africa is colder than north africa, it also rains there.
And another important thing to know too is that clouds from the southern hemisphere do not interchange with clouds from the northern hemisphere, so you can't move clouds from one hemisphere to the other since there is a huge equatorial storm right at the equator formed by the Earth's rotation like on Jupiter, but much less visible, still visible when you go in a plane from the northern hemisphere to the southern one. Since Europe, the USA, China, Japan, UAE are on the northern hemisphere, it is impossible for them to "steal" from the southern hemisphere. When in the video they said rain at one point can give drought at another point, they didn't mean some intercontinental magic trick, it happens on a local terrain, for example in China you get rain to the east coast and suddenly in the west and south of China there is drought, that's what they meant.
So China stealing India's rain aint a conspiracy theory!
I read a book called Category 7 written in 2008. It was about super heating clouds with lasers to make rain. It also spoke of weaponizing weather using the same method. Pretty good book that I thought was far fetched at the time.

As someone else mentioned, the oceans are where we get at least half of our oxygen from and from living things: plankton. Climate change risks unforeseeable feedback loops like the ice albedo effect that led to vapid vanishing of artic ice, and there is an unknown tipping point which could trigger an oceanwide "anoxic event" - this has already occurred in smaller patches. That would absolutely be an end of civilization and human extinction event.
It's why politicians ignoring climate change or saying it's "natural" to boost profits for the limited resource that is fossil fuels, is so wildly risky and ignorant - even if it was "natural" (it's not - previous shifts we're seeing, occurred over thousands or tens of thousands of years, not 50 and perfectly in line with rise in carbon emissions) it'd still be a huge disaster.

Cloud seeding has great benefits but also deadly. The silver iodide they spray into the air to help with it eventually ends up in your soil, water supply and body. It has chances of causing skin, eye, respiratory and digestive irritation and also birth defects if done to much. Which has me ask the question what is our future with this if it’s bound to cause problems with our earth and the living organisms that live here? They have been doing this since the 1940s/50s.

Cloud seeding have been done many long time a go. In my country Indonesia, we have dry season and wet season. In 1996 -1998 is the worst year of dry season that make paddy fieldbgone dry and put many forest into flame. At that time i heard all the time in TV News , the goverment apply artificial rain involving military plane and cloud seeding with salt,. I even many time seeing a plane flying around above my area,.and then the rain happened.
