"Going Left" has been a thing since Warthunder introduced realistic airbattles battles in 2013-2014. Early Air RB maps such as Sicily, or even older maps like Landing at Hokkaido, Airfields on those maps were set up so that when a team took off "Straight Out" off their airfield and climbed to altitude, the Opposite team would most likely always been on their RIGHT. Therefore, "Going Left" especially during early prop plane maps and matches became ESSENTIAL because climbing/staying left gave climbing fighter aircraft the BEST chance of climbing above their opponent before starting an engagement.
As time went on, more and more players picked up this trend, eventually "Going Left" and staying with the team also became a safety in numbers kind of benefit where if you went RIGHT instead of LEFT with the team, you would be caught alone and jumped by the entire enemy team and would get an early return to hanger.
Warthunder Air RB players then have this ONLY GO LEFT mentality stamped into our brains muscle memories from the beginning of our Air RB career and as we continuously play and grind, by the time we get to top tier jets, we don't even think about where to fly off the airfield except to the "Left".
But thats just a theory 😅
Doesn't that get kind of boring though? Optimized the fun out of the mode, imo. Its basically zerging like in WvWvW in MMORPG's (specifically GW2) where its just one giant blob of players fighting another blob of players in open world pvp.
Not sure why the going left started, but it continues because generally if you go right you get 1v5ed and ganked.
I think it may have originated back when they added the first fighters with PD radars with SARH missiles as this naturally cranks both teams and reduce closure at the start of the match and there was actually a reason to sideclimb. I think when the PD radars with elctronic processing came (F-16 and MiG-29 with the R-27ER) it made notching really difficult. But at some point they introduced the mechanic wwhere the missiles would guice to a ground reflection when flying close to the ground which makes all SARHs miss it was still useful as therewould be strength in numbers as you are less likely to be targeted and if you are you are more likely to get back up
I thnik its because the airfield on almost every map are tilted to the left side
Oh so thats why i either get instakilled or get 5 kills in headons
It is also kinda a unspoken rule, kinda like not using urinals that are next to each other unless necessary
@@jalmarisavojoki8975 I've been playing since 2014, its been a thing basicly since the beginning of time
About everyone going left; Not too sure why it started, probably with the small maps way back but the reason it’s still around is because sticking by your team you will survive for a lot longer. If you go to the right you will just get hyper focused by the whole enemy team.
over 10 years later, hardly any of those players are around anymore, or are vastly outnumbered by new ones. neither does the size of the map really make a difference, especially when the aircraft only flew a fraction of the speeds they do in todays WT. why was left chosen over straight or right? it must be phycological. most of the world is right hand drive. it is in russia and north america at least, europe is a mix and aussie is left. so naturally as a canadian i walk on the right side use right doors, i would naturally go right. why is clockwise right? so i find it actually very intresting it goes left/clockwise
@@BarkerVancity The original reason would be irrelevant as new people cycled through learning from those that came before. but as for why it was originally left I have no idea. I do have some memories of playing back in 2013-14 era but they aren't clear enough to remember anything about the specifics (I was like 13 years old). I do remember having to fly as part of the team or getting crushed though.
My heart always sinks when my whole team is going straight down the middle
IT DRIVES ME MAD WHY GO LEFT! WHAT STARTED THIS!
@@BarkerVancity You are saying the size of the map doesn’t matter but I remember when you would be next to the map border the whole time when just going a little bit to the left

I love how they got the CENC sounds with the opening and closing of the nozzles! Crewed F-15C's for 19yrs then A-10's for 3 more before retiring in 2013. Good times.

12:22 I don’t know why it made me laugh the way he instantly got into the parachute 😂
In rocket league there left man goes for break on kickoff too. Its just an unspoken rule where if you dont follow it, you learn pretty fast from harsh consequences 😅
I also have been racking my brain about all the players going left, i think its to do with the spawns. However if most of a team is together on the left they fly swat whoever goes right then win 😂
Its just because everyone else on your team goes left, same with the enemy team. Whatever poor soul tries going right ends up headon-ing the entire enemy team, which is not usually a recipe for a long life
Its crazy how its an unspoken rule to always go left. 😂
@@Mai-ek8rf its same in some other games like rocket league, when 2 players left and right have the same spawn, its an unspoken rule every player knows that left always goes
Airfields tended to face left back in the day so when they started facing head on, it just kinda stuck in the minds of the older players, and the newer players caught onto that.
I started playing sim battles recently and I’m hooked.
I was just tired of the fur ball of aircraft and missiles in RB and wanted actual dogfights. I think the f15 will be amazing in sim.
sim is better bro RB is like arcade
In real life: 104:0 kill ratio, F-15 is undefeated for a reason.

@@Kevin-mk6joyes like when F-15s got jumped by foxbats and got taken by complete surprise yet somehow didn’t take a loss
Multiple factors as to why everyone goes Left:
1. If you go Right currently you will get headons with the entire enemy team.
2. Due to the old maps, going left gave you more sideclimbing ability compared to going right which in old maps was the direction of the enemy airbase.
3. Jousting Mentality, assuming most if not all players are right handed (mouse) its the natural proclivity to lead with the less dominant side (ie left ) You see this a lot in games of chicken where both sides have a nuetral understanding to veer right if they chicken out. Or in jousting where both sides set up as to have their shield closer to the divider.
4. Dexterity of Keyboard fingers, your pointer finger (your most used finger) is usually on D and E which will usually involve you going left at the start to maximize the amount of time you may go right later in the match.
5. Gun placement (modern vehicles) on most modern jets like the F-16 the gun is usually on the left making it naturally easier to fire on targets on the left whilst not risking running into them as much.
But in the end the main reason everyone goes left is simply due to spawn placement and maximizing the distance between eachother, most people don't want to be killed early into the match so maximizing the distance you are from enemy spawns gives you more time to fly (Most AFK players are usually flying on their left). As a test, after takeoff, fly perpendicular right as fast and as low as you can and once your team is a good ways past the secondary airfield, slowly start turning back in. Most players will be looking right to spot enemy players by the time you barrel in from their left. ( I used this a lot on A-10's when I used the Mig 21R-13).
Thanks for the daily Phly once again. You really help my depression you have no idea bro!. I love you and your family phly, thanks for being a awsome human

God bless you bro, stay strong
Help you with depression you serious bro😅
About the left side rule, lets just say there is a reason carriers have their tower on the starboard side ^^
eh its a carryover from the propeller plane days
@@TheGreyGhost23 Yep, cause early tests have shown that when aborting a landing, the majority of pilots had a tendancy to veer off to the left. ^^
something sometthing to do with prop torque too @@LtCWest
It has a lot to do with the majority of people being right handed. Almost all hockey players and figure skaters are much more comfortable turning, stopping, spinning, etc to the left. But as far as carriers, prop torque does pull the plane left, and that was a major factor back in the day.
Gaijin trained us all to go left from the beginning. its part of the brain washing program lol. All airfields were slanted left since the beta lol
Back in 1982 British Airways Flight 009 flew through volcanic ash. All four engines flamed out, but luckily the pilots were able to glide the plane down safely. The engines weren’t after-burning but the engines would probably die in an f-15 before they ignite anything left in the ash
"I don't know why we put up with it for so long" Because that's how RWR works in reality...
Aweomes Phly, now you should hop in the F-15E in DCS with me for contrast
The smoke out of volcanoes is ash, not gas. Or maybe there’s some gas but as far as I know it’s mainly volcanic ash and like other ashes and sand, it does not ignite
12:21: The whole time I'm yelling: "Steve! Flares! Use flares!" And then yeet. 🤷
Finally someone pointed out the mystery of top jets climbing left and props climbing right
why don't you use the SRC PD mode, the SRC only is really sensible to chaff =w=
Radar for me was bugged with search pd could be fixed by now
@@PhlyDaily alright, hope so. Eager for the flanker and gripen video !
Yes “Left climbing” is very frustrating for some of us. How ever my theory is that it is a well established technique used by a squadron of fighters to better set up for engagement while also keeping numbers. From my research 7/10 fighters who venture head on or towards the right end up focused down by the enemy team. Major skill is required. 16:22
The fighter pilot community used to have a saying: "Most times head-on BFM will end in your death."

@@SunTzu2024currently this is just the A variant, the F-15C theoretically should be better but yeah this update is kinda bullshit since russia gets a plane with better flight performance and 10 of the best missiles in the game
@@Monarch_14 exactly. But one big issue is the F 15 in the game is obviously an A variant. Meaning that does not have chaff or flares. So then, having flares on the F-15 is wrong. The F-15 received flares countermeasures and wiring for the aim missiles in 1982 I believe under the MSIP upgrading affectively, making it a F 15 bravo Charlie. So the F-15 they have in this game is wrong lol gaijin is so stupid.
@Monarch_14 also built 13 years later. Which back then was a lot for technological development

Food for thought
Most Players go left because if you go right you'll run into the bulk of their team with no backup
5:12 i'm left handed and always go to the right, you're onto something
Phly, you should be more worried about the volcanic ash fouling your engines :D
The reason everyone goes left is because EVERYONE GOES LEFT. If you go right thats the enemy teams left so you will be head on with the entire team. The rule of going left is to make a somewhat fair fight where we all converge mid map
I always go right or mid but im left handed, it is funny seeing 90% of every team go left
@PhlyDaily There is a really cool feature which is missing from the beginning of War Thunder! Wing condensation. I please you and everyone to start talking about it so Gaijin introduces it finally after 10 years. It is just for a better visual experience but it would make the game so much more fun!!!
When you research the F15A using the F15A:
Dam bro really dissed him when he pancaked 😂😂😂
1. Left side based are nearer
2. Head on is not most preferable so Fighters tend to go also to the left.
Phly, I think you'd love to play the of(ph) 40, its a spaghetti mbt with spaced armor and a laser rangefinder at 8.0!
Day 33
Teams don't even care about the sun but all pilot who knows about air combat would use it.
if you're cranking and trying to hit someone before they hit you, maneuver while you crank, keep up the speed and you'll bleed the missiles energy far quicker, I like to change crank direction completely if I have time and that way the missile will go from leading me to chasing me giving me valuable seconds for my missile to connect or for things to develop further
i remember going left because the majority were going right a long time ago, but now everyone knows it and is just used to going left
anybody else notice that f4c at 2:03, feels bad taking a flareless f4 into toptier lmaoo
I also asked myself the question about why so many go left xD but it seems to be conditional... like, this happens most with jets and faster planes, it doesn't happen on every map, like the city map has a drift to the right, and it's also kind of self-enforcing... the more that go left the more will go with them... because when you go right, I soon found out at the beginning, you die fast... since there are nearly no friends and all your enemies went to that side since that's their left. So breaking the cycle is nearly impossible. Many maps also have a layout that's making it more advantageous to go left, like Golan Heights. I think it's a combination of all those things.
If Phly is up in a jet, who's watching the streets?
I can’t stand how the sushi jet gets its own Russian turkey feathers and f15 gets “F16 ENGINE COPY PAIST ON F15 MUST MAKE MODEL QUICK”
You brought up everyone going left. Well on that specific spawn on Kamchatka, everyone goes right for me (I play mostly 11.0 f4e). And on the enemy's side, they themselves all go left from their perspective. This way from your perpective, you and the bunch of the team that went right all meet headon with enemies on the east side of the map, around the volcanos. For me in my f-4e against russians with better all aspects, this is a death sentence, so i almost never got to bomb or even get any kills. I noticed this pattern today, and started going left, and often im the only person who does so. This results im me getting my bombs off, along weiht a garunteed 2-3 kills. And if I spawn on the north side of Kamchatka, I flank the opposite way, right. Since I made this change, it's actually making me so good in F-4e, and I consistntly get 1-3'd place in the team with multiple bases and enemy planes killed. And as far as my observaitions go, this behaviour of most players meeting on the right side of the map ONLY happens on Kamchatka map too lol. Idk why, but it's interesting, and I do exploit this knowledge, having discovered it.
You said corn, now all I can imagine is Einstein the talking parrot as the pilot of the 15. 🐦
9:01 idk why, but I’ve noticed in this patch it really likes putting USA and Japan together against everyone a lot
3:20 not every jet has this sadly, just the more modern ones seem to not pick up friendly RWR, I believe my Phantom FGR.2 was picking up friendlies on the RWR. (Also rip the 12.3 phantoms still without the 9L having to fight the new aircraft 🤣
The reason to fly left is to have enough distance for you and the enemy and plan out the attack. If you go straight, you are going to have a higher chance of getting into a Furball. And if you fly right it's literally a death sentence and you have most of the enemy team chasing you.
right but the question is why left. the majority of people are right handed and live in a country that drives on the right side of the road. so why left
@@rapter1x1x because you left the airfield that's why
There’s goes that kill ratio
The echoed gay topps it all off
Finally someone playing the F15 properly
not a psychologist but from what I've learned from high school psychology
the reason most people go left is because most people are right-handed, and going right just feels like a natural instinct.
BUT in war thunder you want to be unpredictable and unnatural, basically, you don't want to do the expected thing, so you will subconsciously go left. and on top of that, even if this isnt your case, you might just follow the crowd.
Been loving the 5 minute battles at the minute 😂
5:00 I think it must have been 4 years people started to do that, it's just like habit now xD

Im guessing the f18 hornet might be the next high teir jet for the USA
They really need to add the amraam to the f15a. It is so handicapped having the sparrow compared to even a 120b, let alone a 120c
I’ve always gone right, it’s bad because it’s usually me versus the whole team
They need matches with fewer players. More 1v1 interactions
I noticed the whole left thing a while back, really interesting
I know that when the air maps where smaller people would go left to have more room for radar missiles, but now people still do it so i have no clue anymore.

drinking game, take a shot every time phly says "cesspool"
Love bow over the years. The game went from ww1 to current vehicles.
I wonder if some sort of staggered spawn could string out players and give some separation and avoid the cess pool?
Fun fact f-15 has 104-0 kill ratio :D
Come on phly, you launch morales them you break out and chaff to escape the missle 😂
every one go left because the other team go left and when you go right your just fly in the other team so people learn just keep left at the start to stay in the group so you don't get gang up on. But i can't wait to play this plane in two years once i start the grind for it they need to fix the grind for now adays
5:02 i go left because the enemy will go left, i think its subconscious for most since going right often ends in getting jumped by multiple enemies and creates negative stimuli the brain naturally anticipates and tries to avoid.
my guess is that people go left because the airfield typically points to the left.
I take off to the left because usually the enemy run way is off the right so i take off in a sort of notch

Phly has been watching Hank Green on tiktok based off of that corn and fire comment
Im not going to the right just because whole enemy team will be swarming me because they went to the left :D
I love your videos man, keep it up
The whole left vs right side of map thing is cause most player are right handed and if youre right handed you use the left side of your brain. I'm left handed so I go right side of the maps usually
And people always told me to stfu when I complained about the RWR 😂
has afterburners on wondering why flares are not workin.. lol
i think you can climb up for bvr at the start just straight in. Once you got spiked you go cold and get back to your team blob but above them.
14:30 I did that with ej Kai once, shot at a radar contact… turns out I killed an aim54 with a sparrow lol
i never thought of it that way. i am left handed and i always go right
The real question is why they added the F-16 before the F-15, in my opinion it doesn't make sense.
Funny what you said about most people going to the left ad they are right handed,. The statement holds some truth as in the UK we drive on the left hand side of the road as back in the day when we were to joust on horses being on the left of the enemy would mean you can you your right hand, the strong hand to attack

its just a thing wt players do, bombers will gaggle on two bases, fighters will just go over there because....yes? ive got some sneaky flanks of with flying right
I rewatched red dawn last night and the most unrealistic thing about the movie, is they found a shot down f-15 pilot.
It’s a good theory but for me it depends on what side the enemy airfield is and where they spawn then that’s when I’ll go the opposite direction
The fact they brought the F-15A MSIP to the game without TWS, at the same time giving the Su-27 TWS for it's best fox-1 in the game.... F-15 is pretty shit on launch.
You should also descent while notching, to drag the opposite missile down to more dense air so it will lose its energy faster. Plus notcing really only works if you have terrain as background to blend in so the seeker has harder time keeping the lock. Not sure if missile aerodynamics and radars are modelled right in wt thought.
What are your key bindings? I'm new to top ish tier and not sure how to bind all the radar and all that stuff.
The f-15 cold handle its wing being ripped off and it is the only known aircraft that can go straight up
