  • It was one of the most daring diplomatic engagements of her reign of nearly 60 years.
Britain's Queen Elizabeth has visited Croke Park sports stadium in Dublin, the scene of a massacre by British troops and a key symbol of Irish nationalism. 14 civilians were shot dead there in 1920 during a Gaelic football match.
More than 90 years on, some in the country still believe the Queen's presence there is unacceptable.

Why are people taking it out on the Queen Of England? I’m Irish and I know the history between them but the Queen isn’t like them? What the hell?

Honestly I hate the people who thinks all Britons are bad, literally just the stupid ones are the problem. Please stop hating, the only reason there is hatred is because of people stuck in 1900. These people are holding the tricolours which resembles peace between Catholics and Protestants but are still ranting from events that happened because of people that have been dead for centuries. Grow up, and this is coming for an Irish guy.

How did America win its independence but Ireland can't seem to? Britain, let go of the things it's time to let go of. Stop clinging to things that deserve their freedom. They don't want to be part of your countries anymore. Let them go.

No indeed we do not want to be a poor angry society for ever. The comments of the negative few as expressed here are not representative of Irish people views in general. The majority of Irish people have move on and are more than happy to put the past to one side. Most people feel a sense of warmth towards her majesty and even those who were undecided have been won over by her sincere expression of respect to our freedom fighters of 1916 at the garden of remembrance.

May I congratulate the the previous contributor "fallsman1888/the voice8111" wow you have summed it all up so well. Even if I tried I could never have said it so well. We are real Irish born and bred people and have lost a lot but we are prepared to move on. How glad I am and how proud I am to see the positive events of this week. How happy I am to welcome her majesty to our soil in a spirit of optimism and hope for the future.

@hugobear1 I have no problem with English people, my girlfriends family on one side is all English which is fine by me, beautiful Somerset... I do however have a problem with Bigots, which 90% of people from Northern Ireland seem to be. God bless to England and The Irish Republic.

@shayno125 It is odd...I've never come across friendlier people than the Irish. In fact I followed Ireland round South Africa during the 95 World Cup as I couldn't get England tickets and I was jolly glad I did - we had a riot and were welcomed. Then there are their Lions fans - never heard anyone mention politics or history.

@lukeanatr The tricky thing is to what degree can one be blamed for one's forefathers? To do so is illogical ... as Her Majesty said one can wish to change the actions of the past. But they were carried out by someone else. I am not acqainted with anyone who'd want to do down the Irish, nor anyone who is pleased that they have been. We Catholics were persecuted for hundreds of years here in England but I can't say it alters my opinion of the CofE one iota.

Firing on unarmed civilians is not forgivable and never okay. How many times have you done this now? You have no place in Ireland.

A waste of time really - the Irish hate us, plain and simple. I still think Brian O'Driscoll is a god however. My father's family left Ireland during the famine - and I'm bloody glad they did and I feel 100% English. Isn't it time people started looking forward. SHame they hate us as I always have a great time over there on holiday. That's life I guess!
