    How to diagnose the common P0171 and P0174 lean codes on a BMW M54 engine.
    Get rid of the codes with a new CCV Kit: amzn.to/1U57csp
    M54 suggested maintenance: amzn.to/2gRRyEw
    Symptoms will include rough idle, poor fuel economy. This particular car was repaired with just a new CCV crank case ventilation valve kit, and by thoroughly cleaning the dipstick guide tube. The valve cover also cracked from the excessive pressure due to to failed CCV valve, so it was replaced with a new one available here: new CCV Kit: amzn.to/1U57csp

    Nice, had those isues when I bought my 325i facelift (E46) three years with 94k miles. Very common with the M54 engine. Me and my dads friend who works on bmw and drives a E46 replaced it all along with the CCV pipe. Runs so much smoother

    I had these codes recently and it turned out to be a tear in the lower intake boot - very common point of failure (and so is the upper boot, come to think of it...).

      Zach V it’s common for these cars to go through several gaskets and ccv’s even low mileage ones can fail. Best way to diagnose is to pay local shop an hour or two to diagnose leak source with smoke machine

    Woooooooooww! I was literally just out to me and 18-yr old son's project car, a 323 Coupe from -01, which is running like crap. We have done so much troubleshooting and so much repairs to it, but still had done nothing the CCV. I got the exact same symptom you did, lid was sucked stuck and when I removed it the enginge stalled and rushed and stalled. Will try to find a CCV now...

    I had these codes pop up on my 05 325i and I checked the DISA valve and when I pulled it out, the o-ring was gone and the rubber on the valve was worn down pretty good...So after ordering one off Amazon for $94, I installed it and haven't had an issue since and engine light hasn't come back on.
    Dealership and auto parts store wanted $400-$600 for the DISA Valve!!! Saved a ton of money on repairs 😎👌

      you should get a local mechanic to smoke test the system to look for leaks in the intake system. This is the most common reason for lean codes. Spend your money on that diagnosis first. It should be 1 to 2 hours labor charge

  • @Peter-pv8xx
    @Peter-pv8xx Před rokem

    I don't even want to go into the issues I'm having with the 2003 530i I'm dealing with but here goes. The car sat unused for approximately five years, it was owned by my customers aunt who then purchased it for the paltry sum of $400.00 which on the surface sounds like a good deal but remember we're dealing with a Nazi mobile thst sat for five years outside in the northeast specifically NJ central Jersey to be exact, I advised him not to buy it and was met with the usual all that's wrong with it is, an oil leak, when speaking about a BMW leaking oil you use the plural, leaks because there's more than one place it's coming from, he also has very little money so he pays me when he can, this thing was leaking every kind of fluid except for trans fluid but remember it hasn't been driven I suspect that will be next. So far I've done the oil pan gasket the oil filter housing gasket and vanos hose which was pouring out of it, all the radiator and heater hoses, a new coolant tank new brakes all around and the valve cover gasket and that's when the problem started. I also changed the purge valve due to the p0444 code which was the only one that there was prior to doing the valve cover gasket, when I was finished and started the engine I got p01085 p01083 p0 1171 p01174, what the heck did I do wrong? There was a small I assume vacuum hose in the back of the engine that basically disintegrated so I fixed that there was another very brittle hose that was kind of collapsed but I left it alone, could that possibly be the source of a leak big enough to cause a leak condition? The engine runs smooth except on start up but it quickly smoothes out, I did replace the curved bellows hose on the air intake because it was cracked so that's not it, and the best part is that there's still an oil leak but I can't figure out where it's coming from, it's on the drivers side coming from the top, it's not the oil pan gasket that I know for sure, it's nothing like the way it was leaking before because it would leave a puddle everywhere you parked, I wondered why there were three empty bottles of oil in the trunk. Inspite of everything the car does run and drive very well, he did have to get new tires, two of them were original made in 2002 believe it or not and the other two from 2009, the car has 92,000 on it, oh I also put new lenses on the headlights which are of the xenon variety also new adjusters which of course were all broken, the auto adjusting headlights do work which was surprising, I forgot a new water pump and new belts.

    • @BIMMERZEITT
      @BIMMERZEITT  Před rokem

      Nothing more expensive than a cheap BMW! Sorry to hear. You’ve done a lot so far, nice work. You may want to smoke test it with an inexpensive smoke tester like I used here: czcams.com/video/QIGQGai5ngs/video.html
      Valve cover gasket probably leaks too. The plastic covers can also leak both oil and vacuum when cracked or warped. Also the ccv hoses. You can add UV dye to oil and inspect leaks with a UV flashlight to find the leak source.

    You show the valve cover cap being hard to remove, suggesting a vacuum in the crankcase. But then you conclude that the CCV valve is broken, and the crankcase is under too much pressure, the opposite of too much vacuum. Which is it?

    • @BIMMERZEITT
      @BIMMERZEITT  Před 7 lety +1

      Vacuum = negative pressure. A CCV valve can be stuck open or stuck closed, they fail both ways.

    • @donolsen1103
      @donolsen1103 Před 7 lety +1

      Very few technical people say too much pressure when they mean too much vacuum. So in this case, was the CCV stuck open or closed?

    • @BIMMERZEITT
      @BIMMERZEITT  Před 7 lety +1

      Hey Don, sorry for the confusion. In this case I meant vacuum or negative pressure; this CCV was likely stuck open due to a failed diaphragm inside the CCV itself. However, they can fail in the opposite way where the valve is stuck closed and creates too much positive pressure.

    @thomasbacker8162 Před 7 lety

    I have the same peoblem with my 97 520i with one vanos, the technicker that looked at it says the worst thing ks that the valve cover gasket gets blown and you get a whole in it where the oil will leake out cause of the ccv valve and it can get so tight in the ccv valve that the engine will accually fail to give the gas pressure you give it eith the throttle and then makes it unable to drive cause the ventilation that needa to operate corectly is not functning. Symptoms that i also got and understood the valve is broken is that the car can suddenly from time to time all randomly, caugh og jump like if you clutch down very fast, also i got once, a oil presseru lamp in red, but despite that, the only worst thing that he said can happen is the gasket get defect and the valve lines get so tight, the engine cant work until its replaced and cleaned nice again.
    He checked this on my 520i, maybe 4-5 weeks ago and i only have had 2-3 long drives since then and now it is struggling to get gas power to move forwards. So i suggest to all of you guys with this problem ASAP!

      thomas backer hi there,
      - i'm in a very bad situation here with my lovely e39 9/2000 2.0litre dual vanos
      In 4 days i am about to travel 1400km but car broke 3days ago
      -I suddently had yellow engine light on paired with EML and Asc tringle lights on . Car acted like bump on rocky road or as you say more correctly as if you hard-press clutch fastly and badly.
      I just couldnt do even 10mph. Engine wasnt working right. Like air and/or gas was missing or a sensor(cam/crankshaft) sent wrong data to ECU. idle only wasgood. When you press acceleration pedal is when the problem occures.
      After 8 hours i started engine again. EML light was off(only yellow engine light was one) and the car was working perfectly.
      Since then they've come randomly both: EML light and engine problem.
      But today i had it all day on. I think it is not going to light off any more
      :(
      Do you think CCV (CPV) is able to cause this problem?
      *I don't have electric gas pedal or electric throttle valve.
      Tommorow i ll go to read codes...asap

I've replaced 3 m54 covers that had hairline cracks of around 3/4" that cause vacuum leak and codes. It's not cheap- around $400 list or $300 wholesale. Try torquing it down again maybe a nut or two is loose... let's hope that's all it is!

I do do a good bit to my car myself, i just relaced upper and lower radiator hose with mishimotto high heat resistant hoses off eeuroparts, flushed all the coolant out, because the person i bought my car from wasnt using bmw coolant and filled and bleed properly with 50 blend of coolant and distilled water, i did an oil change a while ago with castrol edge 0w40 european formula with oil filter chage, i also did a fuel filter change, cotrol arm replacement and some other stuff. So you show us a car that has a lean code and don't show us the root cause. You didn't even consider a sas issue, low fuel pressure at the rail.. or an IAC issue,,, how about injectors not operating ..bad o2 sensors. no numbers, no diag, no fix.. ummm I'm confused.. I guess thanks for showing us a car that has an issue????

    • @BIMMERZEITT
      @BIMMERZEITT  Před 9 lety +6

      Hey +Ben Dover, the most common cause of these lean codes are vacuum and air intake leaks. This is the first thing I check and also the easiest. Both the root cause and solution are described in the description above. This car had a failed CCV valve with excess pressure at the oil cap. The dipstick tube clogged, which caused the valve to fail, which then cracked the valve cover. We installed a new CCV valve kit with all of the new lines and this resolved the lean condition. We also later installed a new valve cover on the car.
