How Long Hair Changed My Life | Mannat Malhi | TEDxOxford

  • So how did long hair change my life? Well it prompted me to think about why we spend so much time thinking about our identities. We all want to be seen as a complex and nuanced individual and yet this is denied to some in our communities who express their religious beliefs in an obvious manner. As a Sikh woman with long hair, this talk addresses how I came to accept my own identity and my pursuit for others to embrace me too. Ultimately, equality is about perceiving all humans as individuals whose goals, ambitions and personalities are intricate and irreducible.
Mannat is a second year law student at Wadham College, Oxford University. She incorporates the quote "to define is to limit" in all aspects of her life whether it be from her quirky shoe collection to her passion for women's rights and racial equality.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

    Hi Mannat,
It is nice to connect with you again, even if only virtually through CZcams. That was a very eloquent and honest talk, that had a solid message worth sharing.
I confess that I had not heard or read such a helpful explanation of the tenets of Sikhism before. Thank you.
It was touching for that you were able to positively reference Chapel services, but I do need to point out that Uniting is the denomination ; - ) do sorry for not making that clearer at school.
Thank you for your courage and wisdom. I am proud to have had some small part in your education.
    Blessings,
    Jon (Rev H)

Marvellous speech!!! All of us are different!!! Let's respect and celebrate our wonderful differences!!! Let's love our own uniqueness and other people's original qualities!!! Our world is full of fascinating various human races that are precious in any sense. Let's admire them! ...I stopped colouring my long hair after 31 years! I stopped being ashamed to have some grey hair ( many women try to cover it as if aging was something shameful!!!)...Let's love who we really are!!! ..Miss Mannat Malhi, You're brave, wise and gorgeous!!! THANK YOU FOR SHARING YOUR EXPERIENCES!!!

    • @dawood4920

Well actually according to eastern philosophies. Our body has a type of cosmic energy. Indians call it 'prāṇa' and chinese call it 'chi'. The prana circulates throughtout our body. Through our spine. And the highest point of prana is on the top of our head. Our hair is made of pure protein substance called keratin. It's a good conductor of prana energy. We tie our hair in a knot so the prana energy remains locked. Buddhist do completely the opposite, they shave their head because their meditation involves focusing inwards, focusing on oneself. Whereas in our tradition, we focus on external. Our purpose is to connect with everything and realize that everything is one. Hair plays an important role in meditation.

Hair, in the Sikh philosophy, reflects procreative fecundity. Sikhi, as a belief, mandates that the world is the true spiritual arena. As such, Sikhs are enjoined to imbibe the householder's life i.e. familial life with all its corollaries. Our unshorn hair reflects this facet of our belief. We do not traverse just any spiritual path where the hair is shorn to emulate sterility and rejection of familial life. We believe this world to be as true as the Creator who created it and our hair reflects our commitment to participation in worldly life. It is only through living in and selflessly serving creation that you can achieve the state of salvation because the Creator isn't divorced from the Created.
