  • Here I show you how I Bleach, Lighten and tone my hair to touch up my blonde. I am a professional hairdresser and while this process works on my hair it might not work on yours so please consider your hair condition carefully before doing and chemical processing to your hair at home. Thanks for watching and happy bonding!!
    Steps and what I used:
    Step 1
    lighten all over roots using,
1scoop Wella blonder bleach 10z of 20 vol (mixing a Ph bonder in is recomended)
    Apply all over roots
    Process for 15-20 mins
Shampoo, condition and let air dry
    Step 2
Foil highlights with the same formula of bleach used previously on the roots. (This time making sure to include Redken PH bonder)
I do a mix of highlights and baby lights in the foils
    Step 3
Apply root color to remainder of all orange hair at the roots, which didn’t get highlighted using,
    Redkens cover fusion 8NN + 10 vol
Process both color and highlights for about 20-25 mins
Rinse all color and lightener from hair
    Step 4
    Smudge the root (optional)
Using the 8NN + 10 vol formula and apply to first inch to inch and a half of hair leaving out the face framing blonde pieces.
Let process 10 mins and rinse from hair.
    Step 5
Apply step 2 of the Ph bonder and let sit for 10 mins then rinse from hair
    Step 6
    Mix toner
    Using 1oz Redken’s shades eq 09T + 1oz crystal clear + 2oz processing solution
Apply all over hair to flash tone for 1-3 mins
    Rinse, shampoo and condition with
Monat’s Renew Shampoo and Smoothing deep conditioner.

Juat FYI - after many comments, I feel that i should mention this video is Not sponsored by Redken. As many of you guys know, I went to a Redken affiliated cosmetology school and Redken is what I was trained in, so of course I have a strong passion towards the brand and products. :)

After watching this video 500 times, I finally did it! I am not a professional, but by no means a novice, either. I've been doing my own hair and other people's for years. Let me tell you, this is not only hard to do on your own hair, but extremely difficult. But possible. For example, you had better be proficient in weaving highlights quickly and be comfortable with doing paint betweens. Also, you will not have a good time rinsing that 8nn with the foils in your hair. Be prepared to have your head hanging heavily in the sink or tub for quite some time! Having said all that, thank you Sylvia for posting this video because it was worth trying because now I have my dream blonde hair. 💕

I love your channel. My daughter was talking about going to school to learn to do hair. I recommended your channel because you are so thorough. You explain things so wonderfully. Your hair is amazing. I know some people don't like the talking and the way you are so descriptive with everything but I really appreciate it. You are very professional! I hope that she will watch you. So many people go into it not realizing that there is more to hair coloring that just slapping color on your hair. Really, I am thankful that you have this channel. Keep up the great work! ( I wish I would have found you before I started my quest on coloring my hair. It has been 12 years since I did an "out of the box color" and I have ran into every problem you can imagine. I had to cut off my hair it got so bad. It'll grow back but that's not the point. I should have waited that extra week to let my hairdresser do it. I have been going to her since 2011. Only about 4 times. I wanted it to really remain chemical free as much as possible. Ugh! Now I've made every mistake in the book. Anyway, thank you again. Your channel is great!!

Let me say I've seen alot of your vids, especially how to bleach your hair safely at home. Your vids are awesome! Filled with so many tips that you would never get from any hairdresser anywhere else! Thank you so much!!! I've had nothing but bad experiences when colouring my hair professionally so I've been colouring my hair at home for years. With your advice I purchased the Redken pH-Bonder 1+2+3 and used pH-Bonder 1 with the bleach on my hair for about 40-50 mins, rinsed then used pH-Bonder 2 a few days ago. What a difference! I seriously thought my hair would be super dry, and damaged but its not that bad. I also go swimming twice a week and that has really dried out my hair, so I was really worried. I've also used Olaplex 3 every week since October to restore my hair over 4 months. I highly recommend it!!! Since then I have bleached my hair about 4 times now since November 2017. I've been using black box chemist Dei-permanent colours for years now and wanted a change. I seriously didn't think I had to bleach my hair so many times. I received the wrong information from my local hairdresser and they sold me a 20vol developer and bleach powder instead of a 30vol - 40vol developer. So its taken a while to strip part of my hair so its blonde. At the moment the "blonde" varies from very brassy to white but I've ordered Wella Colour Charm Demi Permanent - 7A Medium Ash Blonde × 1 for my toner. Fingers crossed - I will see how we go! Thanks once again!

I know the point of this video is so people like me can try to do this myself at home rather than going to a salon... But it actually just makes me respect your profession so much more! There's no way I could do this without making some kind of mistake along the way, but I will feel much better about spending my money at a salon knowing what knowledge and skill actually goes into it! Although I am still trying to find a colourist that is as great at blonde as you are... If only you were based in London!

Are you serious? Before you attempt your hair yourself maybe watch a few of her other videos to educate yourselves a little more 1st. She has given excellent step by step directions here, but keep in mind its meant for someone with a little more than average knowledge of color. If you follow along you'll be fine, its excellent. Only thing if anything that could be confusing is if she uses ph bondor in her 1st step as well, because in the written directions Silvia you state recommended but verbally its not mentioned unril Step 2. All in all excellent video, and EXTREMELY helpful chicky!! Nooooww if I could only grow a set of eyes in the back.of my head and maybe another set of hands my placement would be spot on.

Thank you so much for caring about those of us who can’t make monthly salon trips a reality in their lives! I can barely get there once a year. I have lived with my dull natural hair color for a decade because I didn’t think I could ever maintain a blonde like I did when I was younger but I have some hope that it’s a possibility after finding your channel. I do find this video rather confusing which I’m sure is because I’m new to this. I would love to learn more though. I realize it’s quite involved and I wouldn’t do anything beyond a test strand until I was better informed, so I guess my question is what videos should I start with to help me make sense of this?
You mention the ph bonder during step 2, but then says you always use it. Does that mean you use it for the first step too? And then the whole second step was confusing too with the foils. I would love to educate myself more but your video list goes wayyy back and I couldn’t seem to find what I was looking for after spending quite some time at your channel.
I did take organic chem 1 and 2 in college so I have a good grasp of basic chemistry. I would love to learn the ins and outs of color but I need to understand the chemical process before concerning myself with application technique. Any advice or links would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! :)

Wow! That's a LOT of steps. But the results speak for themselves. Looks totally worth it, if that's the look you're going for. I guess I don't understand lightening the roots and then darkening them again though. Of course it probably makes them easier to bleach the regrowth though. Hm. My hair is so dark I can't imagine successfully going icy blonde myself. I'm going so grey now it hardly matters. I have a color question if you don't mind? I'm naturally a level 8 & have bleached level 12/"613" hair - roots touched up w/ 20-vol bleach every 2 months at the salon. Since early this year, I made the switch to high-lift with 40-vol developer. Now I'm ready to take this on at home.
Of course switching to high-lift for the past 10 months means that the very top of my hair is a little darker than the platinum length. I actually like it!
I've done patch tests with Ion, Wella, & Clairol high-lift - mimicking what my colorist did using 40 vol developer for 45 minutes. Results were okay with all 3, but not quite good enough to move forward & do my roots with them. Then I did a patch test with One n Only Argan in 11HLA. A total match!
But here's my question: since I'm liking my hair a little darker on top, would I get kind of a smudge root/shadow by default over time if I opted for a darker color instead?
I could do a patch test, but would love any advice if you have any. Maybe use the Level 9 One n Only with a 30-vol - or 20 vol - for 30 minutes? Or Level 8, maybe?
I know this is long & appreciate you even reading this far!!

Would have loved to see you place the foils yourself. Something I cannot do so I rebleach the entire outgrowth. I still use Olaplex. Also have been trying out Formula 18. Since you're in California, have you heard of it? I'm told it's been created by stylists out of CA. As far as Jen Vegas' comment about new info re: Olaplex, I have not been made aware of this by Salon Centric or any other stylist I know. Is there documentation regarding this somewhere?

Thanks for all these informational vids! I’m new to the color-at-home thing. Due to Covid, here I am trying to learn all I can. My hair is naturally dark blonde - maybe level 7 in your swatch wheel. I’ve been getting professional foil highlights for over 25 years. My hairdressers have used bleach for my highlights. I don’t know anything about the “volume” or type of developer my hairdresser uses with the bleach, but I always come out with heavy buttery blonde highlights that I love. I get them done every 8 to 10 weeks, but just at the root. She makes sure never to re-bleach an already-bleached strand. A few weeks ago, my very dark blonde virgin roots were showing terribly. I knew it would be a long time before I could see my hairdresser, so I bought a Clairol semi-permanent box blonde that had good reviews and pics on line. I wanted to lighten my roots only. I thought it would lift the color a little and since it was not permanent I wouldn’t care if I hated it. The semi-perm color was supposed to be “light blonde”, was labeled as a #9, and was called “light blonde”. Well, I used it exactly according to directions and it actually DARKENED my roots AND gave them an auburn hue. Yuck! It made the line of demarcation between root and blonde lengths MORE noticeable. So after a few weeks, I decided to try a permanent “light blonde”. The online reviews for L’Oreal Preference Les Blondissimes LB02 (Extra Light Natural Blonde) were generally positive. Many ladies indicated that they used it on their roots only, but they were still able to have some nice blending within their lengths and roots. There were photos to prove it. I used the L’Oreal a few days ago. I followed the instructions perfectly and left it on my roots for 40-45 minutes as indicated. Then I washed with purple shampoo (One woman in the reviews claimed that she got great results b/c she used purple shampoo right after coloring). Well, my roots are now ORANGE! In your older video (2014) you said this kind of orange tint problem occurs when the color hasn’t lifted enough, so in order to fix the orange hair, the person most likely needs to have another coloring/lifting treatment. I’m thinking I have to use a product that is mostly bleach in order to get the lift I’m used to. So, some people online that had my same orange root problem say they like The Feria Extreme Platinum. One woman suggests using the Revlon Color Effects platinum. She says she got good results b/c Immediately after coloring, she used Sally Beauty Supply Blonde Brilliance toner in platinum as well as a #5 developer. I got confused b/c I though those bleaching kits have a “developer” in it. Is this just a separate developer to use only with the toner? I did notice that the woman does have nice buttery blonde hair now, but she does also have some purple wisps and undertones, which maybe she likes, but I would not. In your old 2014 video, you state that the orange result after dyeing is b/c of lack of lift and in order to get rid of the orange, we need to re-lighten. However, I do notice in THIS video that your orange-colored roots that happened after you did the first step look like what my roots look like now - although yours are a bit darker. Mine are yellow/orange/brass/copper. I’m sure you're too young to remember “Sun In” spray for hair “highlights”. It was the rage when I was in middle school. 😂 Well, it turned us blondes into orange/yellow-heads, and that’s what I look like! Lol! I wonder if I can just “fix my roots” by starting with YOUR step 3 here? I don’t want to put in separate foil highlights; it’s too complicated. All I really want is to lift my hair’s roots to the same light blonde as most of my lengths, but without them being yellow, orange, or copper. It would be okay if the roots are a bit darker than the lengths. I just didn’t want my roots my natural dishwater blonde, and I certainly don’t want them orange! Would you suggest just toning? Your older vid said just toning won’t lift, though. And I think I have to continue to lift. Again, my roots are NOW is where your roots WERE after step one in the vid. If you suggest I try to continue to lighten the roots, I‘ll have to do a box bleach at the roots. So is there one you’d recommend? I know, me asking that is like if you were to ask me to choose my favorite dental procedure! 😆 Or...is there a better product (available to the public) that takes the place of a hair lightening kit? And do ppl ALWAYS have to use a developer with toner? I’m seeing that everywhere, like there is no such thing as just using a toner. I’m not sure why they aren’t always sold together, then! How do I pick a “volume” for developer? Do I use a developer with the toner even though there’s a developer with the bleach/color? The woman online who used the Feria Platinum used a volume 5 developer with her separately-bought platinum toner. Lastly, I hear that BLUE shampoo might be better than purple for blonde hair that has more orange/copper tones. They say purple is best for neutralizing yellowish tone. What do you think? I’m so sorry for all the questions. I really am confused. I was hoping to get some clarification before I try things on my own again. Again, thanks so much for the videos. I’m learning a lot. I just need some further direction - and some confidence! 😬Stay safe and well, and keep the vids coming! 💗

@@JessicaLPie I did it at home, but it took a couple tries to get it light enough. I did have a little damage afterwards, even though I didn’t bleach anything but the roots. So I was sondering if i can skip the first step, or will i just end up with brassy highlights since i haven't pre-bleached the roots?

Hey Silvia! I have asked my hair dresser to use high lift for my really naturally dark roots after I watched your video and it worked out great to lighten my roots in between highlights, however it has a slight orange hue to it, nothing dramatic but still noticeable. Is there anything you would recommend for that?! Maybe a different high lift formula?! Or does color need to be applied after?!

I followed these instructions and watched the video at least 40 times. Literally. My hair came out okay... Definitely nothing like the photo. Issues...
1.I have a ton of hair, lots. I noticed that the timing to bleach would most likely cause different hughes of blonde/orange. So I divided the bleaching into two days, top and bottom. Worked perfectly, but obviously took way longer.
    2. Doing the highlight foils while coloring was the biggest problems I had. I guess I should have done this in two days as well. Because I have so much hair, the timing was too little and so the top of my head coloring came out AMAZING! However, the bottom is another story. The bottom of my hair is still this yellowish color, and now I know in a few weeks I will need to once again put more dye on my head....
Everything came out great, and.my hair feels really good. I used all the redken products.
I have never gone blonde before, but I have noticed a day later that the tone of my hair has already changed

Do you have any videos that address those of us who chose red hair? I was a platinum blonde as a child which then darkened to strawberry blonde and when I started to go gray I have been coloring red since. It is a good color for me and looks very natural with my green eyes and extremely fair complexion. I have always colored at home and mix my own colors I usually go for a medium auburn color but mix up two colors, a lighter color than my end goal and a darker color than my end goal and I start by brushing the lighter color around my face and on top and then begin mixing the two colors (just dip the brush in one bowl and then next swipe the other bowl) and by the time I have reached the back of my head (horizontally mid ear to mid ear) I have used up all of the lighter and have only what’s left in the dark bowl, recognizing that there is some mixing that has already occurred. This technique has given me many years of color that I am quite happy with, and it is super easy to do at home with my complete lack of any training.
My issue is that I now have well over 50% gray hair and it is really resistant to taking color. I am afraid of increasing my developer since I don’t really understand what it does beyond, make the color stay in the hair. I know that it opens the hair to let the color get inside of it, and I know that the developer is what can cause a lot of damage to your hair if you go crazy with it.
I don’t understand toning at all. I want red hair, so I don’t want to remove the red from my hair...so I feel like I am missing something with what toning would do...or is they something only blondes need to do? I do not understand what is meant by “brassy” at all.
I am embarrassed to ask anyone these kinds of questions because it seems like everyone on the planet already knows this (and I will likely get a bunch of flames for asking these questions as being too dumb to even be allowed to have hair) but if you have a video or could make a video that helps to define some of these terms and that helps people with as basic a level of understanding as me, that would be amazing! Some of us want to understand, but are to embarrassed to be called stupid. And I would love to be able to afford to go to a pro to get my hair done, but I am still trying to make sure I keep the lights on and the car running so I can go to work. It is a goal someday to go get a beautiful cut and color someplace with people like you that really know what they are doing, but I am not quite there yet (maybe after my two college student kids are not needing me to help with the “family contribution” that their father refuses to help with but the government says we are required to)...
Anyway, some help in the basics, as well as understanding about other colors other than blonde (I look like a week dead corpse in blonde) and some help in understanding what to do with these hideously stubborn grays that used to help create highlights when I colored but now are just being obstinate and annoying. I really appreciate your videos and hope you see this plea.
    Thank you.

And I dont want to damage it anymore. What should I do? I bought a dye to go over it to even it out but Idont know if it will work. Hello, I have been watching you for a long time now and thought I'd ask you a few things. I prefer a light blond shade and my natural hair being dark blond I do not have to get it bleached, the hairdye will bring it to the shade I want. But unfortunately my hair has been damaged, my colorists have not done a great job on my hair. I live in Romania and many of the products you mention are not available here. My hair has been dyed with Wella 12/96 but I think they used a harsh delevoper because my length is gone , it constantly breaks. I observe the most breakage at the contour of my face , ears and neckline. I changed to Loreal Inoa and I see the same problem. Now I am using an ammonia free Loreal product, its called Casting Creme Gloss. 1021 is the color I use. I am dying it myself. I would like to ask you what sls free shampoo would you recommend and what treatment should I use in order to regrow my hair , and I really want to stick to this baby blonde light colour. I would like a nice healthy blonde and below shoulder length. I use a purple shampoo called Tigi Bed Head Dumb Blonde to bring the color to a platinum shade in between coloring. I am using deep conditioners, Aussie treatments, and a molecular filler called Liquid hair by Wella , I am expecting nice results of the latter. I hardly use hot tools except hairdryer, like maybe two or three times a year. Before the blowout I use heat protectant spray and hair oil. Thanks so so much for your answer.

I hope at some point you could record this process. I'm hoping you'll answer my questions. In the video you say tone first then use step 2. of ph bonder but in your description they are listed in opposite order. Which is it? Also, in your description it just says rinse after step three but in your video you say shampoo and conditioner. Which is it? I can't do the highlights because I have no idea how they are done or the difference and what baby lights are. I'm also sort of confused about the products and which to use when and how much. Could you list the name of the products you'll need in your description? Like: things you'll need: and then list them and maybe even show the bottles all at once? I'm someone who has just bought box stuff in the past but I am really trying to learn how to do blonde myself and I have a trust for you and your videos but as a total amateur, I'm losing you a little. my hair is blonde already (grows), so is it safe to say that a lower developer like 10 or 20 should be fine since I don't need to lighten as much as black/brunette hair? and is that just with lightener powder, or does it hold true with color as well?
