  • The Sacred Realm and its mysterious connection to the Triforce, Hyrule and the Creation of the world in The Legend of Zelda!
This is a video I’ve been eager to finish before the release of the Tears of the Kingdom’s Master Works book this year. It covers the perplexing and intricate history of the Hyrule Kingdom's founding, specifically focusing on the Sacred Realm as depicted in Ocarina of Time, Twilight Princess, A Link to the Past, and Skyward Sword (although there are mentions of Tears of the Kingdom as well!). One of the key points I explore is how the broad interpretation of the Japanese term for "sacred realm" might be contributing to the convolution. So let’s see if we can solve that!
All Japanese translations in the video have been completed by me. As always, translations can be subjective and another may choose to translate differently. No translation I’ve provided in the video should be considered definite and the only way to interpret the Japanese text, but rather as another source to help understand the main essence of the language.
Special thanks to PixelFusion, The Bread Pirate and Lady Cucco for discussing the timeline and properties of the Triforce and Sacred Realm with me.

Well done here with this video! I think a lot of Western Zelda players tend to overlook that Zelda games were made in Japanese first. Understanding the language of origin is integral to understanding the lore tidbits that can seem confusing to us. Thanks for another great video 😊

Yeah, can't really blame the translators for messing up a couple of times here. It must be a nightmare to constantly run into a word that can sometimes refer to a very specific location in the world of the game, but can also be a much more general term for any place that would be considered sacred or important to some people.

    • @Chris-gx1ei
      @Chris-gx1ei Před měsícem +1

Sometimes it is not the multiple meaning of a single word causing this, in his Demise's True Origen Video he mentioned the part where Link gets explained by Ganondorf the purpose of the Master Sword.
The English Version is from what I know the only version where he says it keeps the seal on his magic in tact, in probably every other language (German, Japanese etc) he states that the Master Sword is however the object that imprisons his Demons and by removing it his demons run around free again.
I cannot explain how they fucked up this translation.

In the Japanese version of the manual for a link to the past, it's stated that ganondorf and his theives stumbled seichi where the triforce was sealed by accident and he was the first mortal to see it since the goddesses left it behind and that his wish turned it that place into something else entirelyz which was a reflection of his dark desires. (And this creating A miror-Hyrule dominated by his onen and jyaki)
At the end of that game link wishes to undo ganondorf's wish, in order to put an end to the conflict (while certain cutscenes depict it as an upside-down triforce, no one alive during a link between worlds would have been present so it's possible to interpret it as what link is imagining as he listens to the story)

Yeah, Impa’s line about protecting the Triforce was botched, and I don’t think it was fixed in the HD version. It didn’t make sense for Impa to watch over the Triforce when it was Hylia who was appointed as its protector (not to mention it was still hidden in the sky during the past era), and with Zelda being Hylia in a human form, it is her burden to ensure the Triforce is safe from evil.

Such a great breakdown. I'm reminded of the theories that the Twili and the Minish are the Zoni. A war resulting in a schism could explain both groups, as well as Rauru and Mineru being the last.

    • @Chris-gx1ei

At least it would have been if Aonuma and Fujibayashi dont lable the "Founding of Hyrule" the Memories describe as a Refounding and simply put it at the End of the Timeline.
But thinking about the End of the Zonai's Era being caused by the Intellopers would make quite sense, they created the Fused Shadow and thus probably were capable in even defeating minor Kami while also leading an army of Oni.
Ganondorf referred in Totk that to his time the World was apparently in a state of war from which especially he gains great profit.
And in the young years after Rauru and Sonia went on Demon hunt to prevent any threats, this would make perfectly sense.

The point about Hateno Village becoming a "seichi" (聖地) for fashion is an interesting one. Would you say that the term "seichi" can be used in a similar vein as "mecca" to denote a place of significance that attracts the awe and interest of many people? If so, perhaps that adds to the symbolism of Hyrule Castle being constructed on top of the so-called "seichi" where Ganondorf was sealed away, to serve as the crown jewel or "mecca" of Hylian civilisation.

    • @QuestWithAaron
      @QuestWithAaron  Před měsícem +1

That's certainly an interesting interpretation and I agree with the symbolism. For a place to be considered a "seichi" (聖地) in the first place it has to have something specific that resonates with a particular group. I think "paradise" could be a good word for it in many scenarios. I do also believe that when something is coined as a "seichi" (聖地), it naturally attracts the interest of more people which only continues to solidify the place's association with the term. As a consequence, you're going to those who want to control/lead it.

This video was more fascinating than I originally thinking it would be. I appreciate that you used the original Japanese text to lay out the lore and in-game history, as it conveyed the original intent better than what at least English-speaking fans of the franchise got from playing the games. I can only imagine how much this would affect theory speculation in various languages(not just English) if we had sufficient access and understanding to what was said in the Japanese version of the games as well as the official Legend of Zelda books that discuss the lore and in-game information.
A while back, I figured that in order to prevent the destruction of Lorule and Hyrule if anyone ever wanted to destroy the Triforce again, you would have to first wish that if the Triforce is to ever be destroyed, that it will not have negative consequences on the land or even its world. After watching this video, it sounds like the Triforce is a lynchpin(sorry if I'm spelling that word incorrectly, I'm not sure if it's "lynchpin", "linch pin", "lynch pin" or something else) to keeping the planet that Hyrule, and possibly their entire universe, resides in in existence. So it seems like that world will have to continue protecting the Triforce from those with evil intent until that world becomes incapable of sustaining organic life.
Hopefully, there will be a game set near the end of the timeline where someone uses the Triforce to break the curse of Demise and to make sure that Demise and other demons can no longer place curses in general. That way, with the curse that Demise placed on Zelda and Link broken, the next time Link battles a next inheritor of Demise's end of the curse, malice, and will, he'll be able to possibly end the threat once and for all. Granted, that would imply the end of the franchise or that you could no longer set new games some time in the future after the events of my hypothetical game, so that could be unlikely.

The Temple of Light pointed out to be within the remains of the sealing chamber in totk and then the connection made to how the temple was presented in OOT.
I always wondered what the plaque meant under the castle, and to be perfectly honest... the remains of the Temple of Light makes some serious sense when its read with that in mind. I always assumed it was talking about Rauru's specific seal over Ganondorf, and while that could be part of it... I can't help but imagine they built the Temple of Light around them, in an effort to contain it all. OR that was where Ganondorf believed the Triforce would be- inside the Temple (theory the Zonai are protecting the Triforce at that point) and maybe Ganondorf was right... and that was why Rauru went to such lengths. And then the castle was later built over that temple as things started to fall into ruin.
For it to be the remnants of the Temple of Light, Rauru being the King of Light- the statues, the wall reliefs that tell the entire story, just... everything makes sense to me now?
The fact there was NO mention of the Temple of Light when it came to a sage. Rauru's successor is Link by design and unconventional means as there is no stone for him to pass down once Zelda takes it.
It makes me wonder if Link would have been a sage if Rauru was able to pass down his stone....
We thought 'Link gets to appear in the realms for the other four sages to witbess them gaining their stones, because he's the Hero' but its potentially more like... Link can appear and experience the realms because he is Sage's successor. He has the very arm and power of a Sage, Rauru did say it himself... his arm is more than just a replacement, it still has power in it..
    Too many thoughts!!!

I love your thoughts! I really can't wait for the Master Works book. I wish there was something in game that pointed to it a little more. But then again, when I think about it, technically, if all the sages have their own Temple, it would make sense for Rauru to have one as well, right?

26:24 that's not completely true for TotK. In the cutscene when pulling the master sword, you can see Zelda clutching the damaged master sword and a strong golden light emanating from the back of her hand. The secret stones of the Zonai don't behave like this. They shine from where they are worn but the back of the hand is the place where the triforce manifests from.
So while one can't make out a concrete triangle or all three as in the sealing of Ganon in BotW, there still is this appearance of the triforce in TotK.

    • @QuestWithAaron

    • @qwynnyx
      @qwynnyx Před měsícem

@@QuestWithAaron This of course opens up another discussion of whether the undivided triforce or the power within the triforce or any of its pieces is to some degree or completely identical with the light force from games like Minish Cap. The triforce sure seems to be undivided in BotW and I could not think of a reason why it would divide up to TotK. Technically we'd have to assume that the whole triforce is currently resting within Zelda. Besides, before watching your videos, I was wondering whether the golden skies where Zelda brings you to as the light dragon to pull the master sword was in some way an allusion to the Golden Realm but that seems moot now.

      @@qwynnyx
About the Triforce resting within Zelda... we kind of saw the behavior of the Triforce when it comes to Timetravel, considering that Link in Ocarina of Time was sent back with the Triforce of Courage still within him, causing im his time to be 4 out of 3 Triforce parts while the time where he came from has just 2 out of 3, causing both Timelines to exchange their Triforce of Courage automatically to prevent the one Timeline from falling appart and Possibly the other one from possible consequences of having more than a full Triforce (1⅓ Triforce is more than 1 Triforce still)
It is not straight up confirmed that this would end up lethal for Hyrule, though considering Tears of the Kingdom has a closed Loop, this means there was a period of tine where not only two times the same Zelda exists, but also two complete Triforces at the same time.
In the end it kind of resolved itself by that point, though the thought of there being two Triforces at once simply sounds kind if absurd to me, which doesnt mean that it is possible, though considering that Age of Calamity prevented the Time Travel of Zelda, this kind of fucks up a lot in the worst case.

However I don’t think the two Temples of Light are the same place, if you recall, in TOTK there is also a Zonai Temple of Time and locations such as the Ark are dubbed "Wind Temple" and so on…All of them are linked to a particular sage, and since this is where Rauru seals Ganondorf, it makes sense that this would be the Zonai Temple of Light.

I decided to do something different and watch the full video before commenting.
    1) Skyward Sword, or the "rewrite" (as I call it), was not the "Sacred Realm". The "Sacred Realm" was retconned to be the "Silent realm". Skyloft was nothing more than "Hyrule in the sky", as literally depicted in that bland story. In addition, the Triforce in that game was defined as simply an 'artifact to grant wishes" without any care of the lore before it, insinuating that all games before 2011 were retconned...although I get why people "play pretend" (they read 3 books post 2011 that claim it didn't do that), but let's not play coy. The Triforce in that game wouldn't split if "the bringer of demise" obtained it, nor did it have anything to do with creation. That game directly depicted the "Goddess Hylia" as the primary singular Goddess, with others being her deciples, of which Zelda (the incarnation of Hylia) was created just to use the Triforce in order to stop the ambiguous evil do-er from utilizing it. Because, unlike older primary Zelda games (not made by Capcom or Phillips), the Triforce was created by the three Goddesses (God's) in order to Govern the land, of which a user can utilize for the same intent if all three virtues are balanced.
    2) Interlopers. Fun fact, not only have we been told exactly who they are since 2017, by basic vague implementations in the the recent games, the fandom ignores it because they believe it, and I quote, "retcons lore" (aka skyward sword). The interlopers were the Sheikah, which is why clearly there was only 1 (Impa), with Ocarina of Time providing a pretty simple explanation here.
    3) The Sacred Realm had always been depicted, until 2011, as a land "above" Hyrule; Not Hyrule itself. Holy Lands are typically a land within the "sky", especially in classic games -- Look no further than the Seiken Densetsu games for a rough comparison, let alone classic Zelda lore that directly says this -- Including the Japanese translation Twilight Princess, which you took abstract, rather than literal. Sometimes, dare I tell you, people don't speak in rhymes. They didn't plant seeds 30 years "in the past" for a future title. They go off the lore established within the series -- With Skyward Sword retconning that lore in order to appease Capcom-centric titles. Since those titles, Ie Minish cap, Four Swords, etc, do not fit into the basic methodical design of a Zelda story (Ganon, Zelda, Link, fight over triforce), they had to create a unique way to intertwine them. Clearly, that backfired as the Zelda creators eventually slowly transitioned away from it and started writing-away this notion. BOTW is nothing more than a symbolic explanation here -- consider that "The Goddess Hylia" existed in zero entries between Skyward Sword and Breath of The Wild, and you'll either get "reboot or retcon". We we're told numerous times by the Zelda team that it is not a reboot. Instead, the "zelda tuber community" insists it's either a reboot or 'that it still works', and tries to justify it by looking at everything insanely abstract, to which we need mental gymnastics in order to understand the point driven home.
    4)
    - Sacred Realm = Sky
    - Hyrule = Surface
    - The Depths = Twilight Realm
This is even more true when it comes to Twilight Princess, Ocarina of Time, and TOTK. Yes, this implies Ganondorf from Ocarina of Time, in the Adult Timeline, was sealed in the Depths with the Interlopers, who were also sealed in the Depths. We know that the Depths were an imprisonment from the structures in this allocation -- to which not only are the Yiga "familiar", but we should probably question the point as to why there was so many "mines", and yet no one working them.
In addition, it's so critical to understand that Ganondorf from TOTK was sealed, not in the Depths, but "in a sealed ground", that was below the newly built Hyrule Castle -- We know for a fact that the original Castle was built on the Great Plateau, but not just this castle -- The same one from Ocarina of Time, and thus Wind Waker. Breath of The Wild/Tears of The Kingdom's (present day) exist in the future Adult Timeline, after the Great Flood and the discovery of "new land". This is why this area (Great Plateau) was overwhelmingly abandoned by the Hyrulean Kingdom, and why the Sheikah were able to build a "Shrine of Resurrection" in the exact place that you would have to think "why would they put it over this spring".
In addition to this point here, we can easily deduce that the way Ganondorf from Wind Waker got "back to the surface", was also used for the Twilight to invade Hyrule (something insinuated in Twilight Princess, a parallel timeline where you stop this invasion). Except, in the Child Timeline, Ganondorf goes there "to rule", while in the Adult Timeline, Ganondorf goes there "to escape", the original plan of these Twili were most likely to gain access to the Kingdom and secretly take over rule, as implied of the first Interlopers in Twilight Princess. In a way, in BOTW, we were told the Sheikah did this rough exact same thing -- wherein the Kingdom of Hyrule "feared" their technology could be used to do this (exact same thing), so the King of that time Banished them from the Kingdom. Ironic how the same Sheikah technology, in the future, wasn't controlled by the Kingdom, but instead by the "calamity ganon" forces.
    5) "Secret File" depicts a few things. First, it claims that the islands floating in the sky are a Schema Stone. Next, it depicts that the Castle, The miasma and Rauru (God of Light) are connected. It's insinuation is that the Purification Unit is syphoning the Purification magic from the "God of Light Ruins", causing the seal to break. It also then depicts that the Floor is designed to Collapse (when the seal is broken) as the Scheme diagram propels the Castle into the Sky.
Your "translation" is so incredibly far off, and you can get an appropriate translation if you just used upscaling technology (readily available) to accurately translate it. Why would it be a "secret file" if it's depicting the opening segment of the game that you experience within 5 minutes? Why would there be "temple of light ruins" in an area that, otherwise, was neither a Temple nor in ruins when first entered?
More importantly -- If we know that the original Castle was moved (far after Ocarina of Time/Wind Waker) to this new location, thus the Sheikah were involved in creating this castle (hence the Purification Unit being of Sheikah design and origin, and a plaque dismissing royal family from entering), why would we just got to the mental gymnastics resolve of "it just depicts the opening scene" when it claims "Secret File"? Moreover, how would we get "Temple of Light" out of the literal Kanji for Light Kami? Lmao.
    5) Most of this will probably be sorted when this book comes out, seeing as how they've legitimately stated that it is going to have a recreated History of Hyrule that appropriately depicts new evidence.
    6) One important thing I left out was "Ganondorf's Sealed location". It's sort of obvious, seeing as how they call it the "Imprisoning Chamber" in game, you should really consider what that depicts. It's a Sealed Ground. Or, to be specific, it's the location of which is depicted in Skyward Sword. Consider that the entire premise of Skyward Sword was the background 'past' story of Tears of The Kingdom, and you'll quickly note that the Sealed Grounds was where this Ganondorf was sealed, and it'll be more obvious when you realize the tiered design floor in both games.
Leading me to "So then what is the Temple of Light". Easy, my boy, easy. The "Forgotten" Temple, seeing as how the present BOTW/TOTK believe in "Hylia", and not the Triforce.
    7) Unified: The Sacred Realm is a realm above the sky where the relics of the God's remain.
    - Fallen: The Sacred Realm was turned into a Dark World, a parallel world to Hyrule corrupted by the Evil's of Ganondorf.
    - Child: The Sacred Realm was not destroyed (to our knowledge, yet Ganondorf/Zelda/Link obtained the pieces of the Triforce) and was not invaded by Ganondorf, thus this realm is intact as it was in the Unified timeline.
    - Adult: The Sacred Realm had undergone war and had collapsed over time, being destroyed and in ruins due to the events of Ocarina of Time.
Although people forgot this simple notion -- Ganondorf at the end of Ocarina of Time was never sealed in the Sacred Realm, he was sealed in the Depths/Void of the Evil Realm (Underworld, as you state). Meanwhile, the war "on" the Sacred Realm did occur, which is how he was able to obtain the Triforce, as known within the dialog of A Link To The Past. In the Fallen Timeline, Ganondorf is sealed in the Sacred Realm after obtaining the full Triforce. As far as ALBW, you are correct. At the end of ALTTP, it was restored.
This brings us to easily depict which timeline BOTW/TOTK exist within, which is simply the Adult timeline.

First and foremost, I want to mention that I have read your entire comment and I fully respect your passion for the Zelda games. I can tell they mean a lot to you, (just as they do to me) and that is truly amazing. I made this video using the information provided in the games that Nintendo has made. I try to view it (as much as possible, and I appreciate that it always isn't possible) like this: As new games come out, the stories of old games aren't made redundant, but rather they have had context added to them. As someone who loves Zelda, I try to enjoy the games for what they are, and for what they were at the time as well.
Secondly, there is nothing wrong with my Secret File translation. It says 光の神殿 (hikari no shinden) meaning Temple of Light. Perhaps you saw the kanji 神 and thought that it was not a compound word? No worries if that's the case.
A 聖地 (seichi) can be a plethora of things and is not always represented as something in the sky. There are times when it has been, and one question that I have always been interested in is if there are remains of Skyloft up there. I know you said you believe that the Silent Realm is the Sacred Realm, what makes you think this way?
I'm curious about your opinion on the Sacred Realm's state in TotK. If you believe that it fell into collapse in the Adult Timeline, do you think it's still that way in TotK?

I don't feel like this video told me anything I didn't already know, no offense. I just think a lot of these ideas I picked already from the English text. Also there's not really an answer to the question as to how the Sacred Land could be split into the separate but still connected Sacred Realm prior to OOT. Dividing a whole dimension into two is pretty insane for a regular old Hylian dude, and if that actually happened then I'm more convinced than ever that the events of TotKs memories take place before OOT. As if the Seichi of the Sacred Land/Realm is connected to the Depths in some way then Ganondorf was likely sealed there because he was trying to make it to the Triforce, and the main capital of Hyrule being built over the only known entrance into the Sacred Land makes more logical sense to have happened at the start of the series, shortly after Skyward Sword, than way later when said entrance has sat open for an untold number of eons. The construction of the Sacred Realm, a whole separate plane of reality used to house the Triforce also seems far more believable under the assumption that it was the Zonai, beings presumably descended from the Golden Trio, who helped construct that alternate plane of reality.

I appreciate your feedback, thank you! It's really significant because if the place where the Triforce was sealed was truly cut off from Hyrule, existence would begin to collapse. I think an interesting way to imagine it would be how the shrines are in TotK. When you enter the shrines it feels as if Link is entering another realm or some place "other". Excluding the Master Works videos I'll be making, the next video will be covering "light powers" specifically so I hope the info in that video could be used shed a little more light (no pun intended) on your question then. With all that said, I do agree though, it is pretty insane for a regular old Hylian guy.
One more thing that could also be interesting to consider is how remnants of Skyloft may still be in the Sky. If that's the case you could argue that a part of the original Sacred Land is still up there too.

@@QuestWithAaron I mean the idea of one thing being split in two is definitely interesting. I'll admit that I didn't technically know that just from the English script, so it does add some more nuance to how the Sacred Realm acts, and having a clear separation between the Sacred Land and the Sacred Realm is neat as it does help smooth over some of the weirdness that is the Triforce's story and role in Skyward Sword. Either way, sorry if the original post came off as rude, I didn't mean it to sound offensive if it did. Reading it back just made me realize it could've sounded harsh. Lol

Zelda has basically zero meaningful lore, I'm shocked this video is 20+ minutes

Well, it moreso has hints at lore. There is lot of stuff that could be going on based on the evidence we see, it is just unclear how much of it adds up to a cohesive picture or instead a mess of conflicting concepts.
