  • @johnjude2685

Really enjoyed this working the hammer more and less art of grinding art work.
I just got my first knife in building 9 knives but taking months due to supplies and making several tools for the building used 1095 for 3 and reporpous bandsaw blade for 5 and Forge and quenching and heat treatment of first 5 but just kept the last cool as I cut with cutting wheel and kept cool and grinding to complete and haven't yet see how both ways function after complete months of use hopefully both ways holds edge.
The other of my experience has been with junk steel and leaf springs were great practice and good experience..
I'm thinking that steel you just used is something I would like to try mastering but don't know if my Forge and toaster oven is ready for heat treatment. Believe I'll use the working parts of the toaster oven and build a insulated oven with toasters parts for better heat treating hopefully.
I'm retirement and 71 enjoying this as a great hobby and want better knives than China sales Americans
Thanks for teaching me and others

I would love to see you do a chef knife or chopper, in kind of a Japanese inspired style, with a nice hard 80CrV2 of 1095 and something softer wrapped around and forge welded for the outside and spine. Not Katana style damascus, no folds for the extra cutting edges, just 1 steel wrapped around the other. I know the blade would never be going into battle and need the soft steel for blocking an impact, I just want to see the natural hamon that would happen when you grind out the edge after etching...or if there even would be.

Just getting started myself. I made my first knife around 5 years ago at my Batchelor party. My best friend took me to a class. Since then I have been working and slowly gathering tools and supplies. My second knife ever is almost ready for heat treat. I love to cook so I’m focusing on making knives I can use in the kitchen. We raise our own chickens, I hunt deer in season, and we garden during the planting and growing season.
What should I use for handles as a beginner? Scales or burn in? There is plenty of hickory at my disposal but I have not yet cut near as much as I like to and I know the wood needs to be stabilized before using as a handle.
Any advice would be MOST appreciated!
    Thanks in advance!

I work primarily with 80crv2. I've found that bluing is a good way to prevent rusting. If you want to have a silver blade then just simply keeping it clean and dry will do it. I also use vegetable oils on my chefs knives as they get washed a lot. Hope this helps 😉👍.
