    ---------------------------
    This video presents an animation of the Moore EF5 supercell that occurred on May 20, 2013. The animation begins 90 minutes before the tornado. The view is looking north-northwest from a helicopter at 15,000 feet. As the Moore supercell develops, the view point gradually shifts toward the west. First, the flanking line and mesocyclone organize. Then, the first cell merger occurs. This, combined with the influence of an approaching low to mid-level jet, causes the rear flank downdraft to surge. From the cell merger, the first descending reflectivity core forms. This feature reaches the ground and hits the strengthening circulation. When this happens, the tornado immediately forms and develops from the surface upward.
    As the tornado strengthens, a second set of cells approach from the southwest. When these cells merge with the Moore supercell, the second descending reflectivity core forms. This feature approaches and wraps around the tornadic mesocyclone, causing a rapid expansion of the rotation. After this, the meso snaps back and rapidly shrinks, coinciding with the first EF5 damage. The tornado alternates between EF4 and EF5 intensity, and then the low to mid-level jet passes. When this happens, the tornado jogs left, then right, and decreases in size. Soon the tornado begins to weaken and a final rear flank downdraft surge overtakes the tornado causing it to dissipate.

      To explain very briefly, ALL “weather phenomena” that are accompanied by a noticeable increase in the gamma background (and this is exactly what is recorded by radiological stations in Canada and ALL!!! Europe) cannot be recognized as a purely natural phenomenon, because in the nature of the Earth (and especially in its atmosphere) there is radioactivity that is weakly expressed at a trace level, in a few milliroentgens. And in supercells we see hundreds of milliroentgens per hour. Continue? )

I think animation is a fantastic way to teach people about physical processes in a way that’s more approachable than a lot of the heavy math and science behind it that isn’t usually shown visually. This was really cool and I think I’ll use it as a reference for the kinds of things I want to create. Thank you!

    Awesome presentation. I love when new and missing information fits right into place like a puzzle piece. It's refreshing. I love everything about meteorology. I've been studying it since I was child. Researching and writing papers about it when I entered my teens. Once I got ahold of the internet and CZcams
    made it so much easier. Learned the models and soundings. I actually chased several tornadoes in central Oklahoma. I am from Midwest City. My last chased was in Moore 2013. I went home that night covered in blood that wasn't mine rescuing people from their rubbled homes. It changed my life and I wasn't even in it. I haven't chased since. It's a new tornado season and I have started my chase season for this year. I'll be chasing Texas. On high risk days, I'll be in Oklahoma. I've seen both Moore tornadoes. As much as I pray it never happens again. The question is when it'll happen again. I have an idea for a new tornado instrument. I want to launch this project soon. We'll see how it goes. Wish me luck. 🌪

    I was under the impression that the RFD was an effect of tornado-genesis rather than a cause due to Leigh Orf's simulations, where vorticity begins to break off from the SVC and "train" until the pressure becomes too great which pulls everything together to form the tornado, and this drop in pressure is what causes the RFD to wrap around. This video would seem to suggest the opposite, that the DRC is vital to wrapping up the ground circulation before tornado-genesis. Still so much to learn...

      @jeremiahmiller6431 Před měsícem +6

      There are two models. The model here, where the RFD is the source of the tornado, is the classic model. Orf's model, where the SVC is the source of the tornado, is a much newer competing model.

      @NOAAWP  Před 9 dny

      In 2002, Markowski published research on the rear-flank downdraft (RFD). His observations show that the RFD is generally warm and unstable just prior to and during tornadogenesis. For the Moore EF5 supercell, radar analysis shows that the downdraft associated with tornadogenesis was generated at relatively low-levels within the storm. For that reason, the downdraft associated with the development of the Moore EF5 tornado was likely warm and unstable.

I'm from Alabama (previously lived in Oklahoma, though) and I wish we could see a similar model of the tornadogenesis of the Hackleburg/Phil Campbell EF-5 of 4/27/2011. I've wondered how much difference there might be between the formation of powerful tornadoes in the flatter areas in Oklahoma and the hill country of Alabama. Those two areas seem to produce an inordinate number of these F5/EF-5 tornadoes.

(I didn't know the SVC term, so I called it a "roller" due to the horizontal alignment of the rotation axis.) If it narrows and speeds up along a section, then that pulls it in to wrap on its self. There's a kind of "twisting string" analogy to what it is doing to make it kink and fold over. Radar returns seem to show barber-pole striping where the SVC is forming along a boundary (seems many inclement weather patterns have that whether or not they form a tornado), and when it narrows and tightens into an S-shape that seems to be the thing to look at and watch out for. Even more so if that S starts making a spiral. If that folding and twist has some role, then shouldn't a tornado have an internal dual vortex aspect (as a minimum) to the upper column of the funnel cloud regardless of the air dragged with it as part of where it touches down?
    Maybe that's a funny way of looking at it, but going off observations of public radar sites and seeing how it moves over a time-lapse loop really has a particular pattern. The only thing is it that some radar visuals being presented either lack the resolution or enough frames over time to really show it. But some like COD website seem to have just enough detail to make the tightening up and folding stick out enough to mentally picture the thing going on.

    This is a super informative video but I wish there was a little pointer or something so its was easier to understand what was being talked about. I was lost and couldn’t quite follow. Like some parts I could understand but then I was wondering were you talking about the part in the lower right, were you talking about the radar pictures? I just think it’d help to know what part of the animation was being talked about. Other than that these videos help my phobia lessen at least a little bit. Still terrifying though

    Would be helpful to explains the genesis of the basic storm clouds - why did they appear and how, then maybe ya could explain the meteorological terms and the sequence process flow….why did it grow so deadly, why did it follow its path and why did it dissipate?

    How much of this is at odds with Leigh Orf's supercomputer model? I saw you point out the SVC but yet the RFD surge seems to be shown as a strong factor in tornadogenesis. I am not a tornado scientist, just an enthusiast but I feel like maybe we are on the verge of having a much more detailed understanding of how this process works and how much it varies from storm to storm

      Testing of weather weapons based on the pulsed subcritical reaction of plutonium began in the USA in the mid-50s. This is why there is no PUBLIC radiology network in the US. Weather drones were at first primitive balloons with difficult radio control, but scientific progress has taken its toll and today they are incredibly effective.

    Very impressive! A great animation. Need to re-watch this on a desktop. Here’s a wingnut question ive been thinking about: what are the physical dimensions of a supercell like this? Im sure its measured in sqare miles-- but how many? Tens? Hundreds? Also how high is the anvil? In the El Reno, ive read it was 60,000 feet . Ive also read it was actually visible in Wichita KS over 150 miles away . Anyway great job, i just subscribed a d am looking forward to more of these.

The workers knew that a factory is one of the worst types of buildings in which to take shelter from a tornado; so they were desperate to get home and take shelter with their families.

Continue? )
