Wow, this really looks close to the Pittsburgh 63731 with a Starrett name. (I have the 63731) Does has a different battery. I use a 15 year Mitutoyo as my "A" tool. A Pittsburgh as a 63731 as my "B" tool. For my "AA+" tool I use a Brown and Sharp 570. Which is very much old school and amazing. While it is a 25" Vernier from Providence RI from 60 years ago, it weighs a ton and is the most accurate tool I've ever used. Things have changed, and not for the better.

I just bought Starrett 799B (just like yours, but with digital output) for suspiciously little money. What a piece of cheap junk that thing is. It is producing dry binding screechy sound. I was suspicious that I got a knockoff, but it looks identical to yours. My my 90's digimatic Mitutoyo can do rounds around this Starrett in accuracy and finish. Mitutoyo is dead accurate on Mitutoyo grade AA 1" gauge block , Starrett is off by 0.0005 which is within their claims. I will keep it, but it is not anywhere near worth its retail price.

@@iRepairElectronics it's a starrett 768 display box and a starrett 723 calipers. It's about 20 years old so its dinosaur tech. Starrett has been no help because they dont have any parts . The calipers turn on but the display gets jumpy once I move it. And the display box doesn't do nothing but display the part number. Which it always displayed it but once I plugged in a tool it would display what ever was on the tool. I do have another starrett 723 which works fine and when I plug it in the display box it still does nothing.

I would never buy anything from Starrett with a Battery. Don't get me wrong, their mechanical tools are second to none in quality and finish and I own several. But Mitutoyo has always had the upper hand with digital anything, Especially their calipers. Mitutoyo Calipers are the most indestructible (within reason of course) calipers and the batteries last years even with consistent daily use. Mitutoyos are made in Japan where Starrett has the "Global Series" which basically means Chinese or Taiwanese.

I was going to order these, but I can see from this video they are chinese junk. No different than harbor freights, just stamped with starrett name and price shot through the roof.
