- Quju Shenyi or Quju Pao (曲裾深衣/曲裾袍) is a common style during the Qin (221- 206 BCE) and subsequent Han (202 BCE- 220 CE) dynasties.
This video will show you a step-by-step tutorial on how to wear Quju Shenyi or Quju Pao. I will also talk about each individual pieces as well as the history behind them.
Hanfu, meaning Han Chinese Clothing, or as I'd like to call it Han Couture, is what ancient Chinese people wore for thousands of years.
Traditional Chinese Clothes changed from dynasty to dynasty and there exists hundreds of variations.

Thank you so much for making such beautifully done videos, I've been on and off fascinated by Hanfu from my childhood days when my mom would watch period dramas but it's been so difficult finding more accurate demonstrations and visually see how these garments are supposed to be designed and worn. I now finally feel like I have a better feel of how to make one myself perhaps.

I was also told that the four parts of the top represent the seasons while the twelve folds of the skirt are representing the twelve months. Also that the way of fixing the ribbons of the ruqun should remember the woman to behave introverted and gentle :)
It's a pity that the method of wearing it has been lost. This type of hanfu is the prettiest. Is this why I rarely see quju shenyi in the Hanfu Movement?
I love this style! But it is a bit more complicated to put on and move around. And people are still arguing about whether or not the knee length version existed in history since only long versions have been found in tombs.
This is really good. There are not enough resources for Chinese historical clothing online. Does this style work for peasant clothing?
This style is supposedly worn by everybody during that time period.
Straight sleeves and a shorter skirt would allow most work to be done without hindrance. Using the base trousers and jackets in heavier materials for durability would be convenient for all manual work. Very similar to the Mao suit.
Each piece of the whole outfit can be used and interpreted in a modern way, mixing the pieces with current Japanese simplicity couture or western pieces as desired. Both the inner jacket and outer coatdress would lookvery well over jeans or tailored trousers.

Anyone appalled at wearing clothing in a non traditional way needs to look at the development of all fashions. Paul Poiret from a century ago being a prime example.

It looks beautiful and elegant. At first glance, it looks like a simple piece of clothing but makes a big difference when you show the dress in detail. Looks like a lot of thought was put into it. The dress you wore was simple in design/embroidery/stitching and did not have much designs. I can imagine it shine and really amaze the audience if there were beautiful designs/embroidery/colors. I agree with you, the sash belt does make it look even more beautiful. Also, I love the back view of the dress too. It had its own design, especially the large sleeves (wow), and not just some flat piece of cloth. I think the waist high pleated skirt you wore was too long for you.

You will nvr know how happy i am to encounter ur channel. Im lately learning mandarin from scratch. As a non native speaker,i found it vry disappointing as i find it vry hard to learn. Added to "favorites" last month, by the way. I may also comment that the color combinations could be endless, limited only by the possible inappropriateness of certain colors within the Qin and Han dynasties, or in Chinese culture in general. I'd like to see one in dark green with a dark green skirt and, perhaps light blue or tan or white trim, but I don't know if that might be a cultural representation (e.g. white for funerals, red for weddings, etc.)
Another request ... how about the meanings of various colors within the culture, and whether they are strictly or generally or optionally recognized?

Thank you! The undergarments were indeed PJs in ancient times. Most of my hanfu items were ordered online on Taobao.com and shipped to the U.S.
I fin it easier to buy cotton fabric and make my own, usually the trousers with both the wrap top for winter and a camisole style top for summer. You can also use lightweight or heavier weight (I use voile in summer and poplin in winter) depending on where you live. Northern Chinese clothing was often wool or padded cotton especially in winter for this reason.

Very elegant. I could see this being worn to a high-school prom many years ago when I was young. Nowadays, the wearer would probably be ejected for not showing enough skin. But this is very elegant and very well presented. I wonder, what sort of shoes/footwear is traditionally worn, and, in rainy or wet weather, how does one keep the shoes and skirts clean?
I would totally wear hanfu to my prom if I could go back in time! I wear ballet flats or Chinese embroidered shoes with hanfu. I've seen models wearing modern heals and I think it looks nice too. In ancient times, people tuck their skirts into the belt when working in the field. Of course they wear long pants underneath so they would not be showing any skin.
I find so many shoes from amazon you just type Chinese shoes. I am not Chinese but love wearing those shoes so pretty and comfortable.

Thank you Bernard! Yuan Dynasty is established by Mongol nomads. It's a short-lived but unique dynasty. And what they wore is a combination of traditional Mongolian dress and hanfu. I shall look into it more. :)

Thank you for the video, but I find it a bit odd when comparing chinese culture to japanese culture. They say that most japanese culture come from China, but if that's the case why the japanese make getting dressed such a chore? During an interview for Memoirs of a Geisha Zhang Ziyi said that it required two people to put on a kimono and it took about an hour to put on a kimono due all of the layers and sashes. Anna Sawai who played Mariko in the 2024 Shogun tv series said that she was wearing 8 layers of kimonos during shooting. As I said it's a tad bit odd that the japanese claimed to admire simplicity but still made getting dressed so over the top complicated.

I am recently so in lovee with hanfu and Chinese traditional clothing. I think it's beautiful and it makes the wearer look graceful and exquisite and sophisticated. In fact, i wish people are still wearing it in daily life now. I'm not a chinese but I just bought myself a Tang dynasty hanfu kinda like the one in the vid but without the outer coat and now I'm looking for a video on how to wear it cause the skirt kinda confuse me😅 Anyways it's toooo pretttyyyyy,i wish i could wear it outside without people looking at me weird cause you know, I'm not a chinese and all.

Is there shirt traditionally that overly long? If so, what is the reason behind the length?
The length usually doesn’t matter, the historical accurate quju is floor length with straight sleeves, the shorter version is a more modern version made for it to walk easier.
During Han dynasty, Han people usually wore one piece dress, not two piece clothes.

I order most of my hanfu from Taobao.com and ship them to the U.S. If you are new to hanfu, I would start with bigger shops such as 重回汉唐、花朝记、汉尚华莲 I personally really like designs from 踏云馆. Hope this helps :)

If I may ask, is that 1st. layer you put on (over the tshirt) what was historically the orignal underwear?
That's the middle wear. Historically from what I heard, Han dynasty didn't have underwear yet so they make this kind of "deep" clothing to properly cover the whole body. The historical one is long that cover up to the feet. This modern one she wore is short and require a skirt to go under it but there are also long ones being made too. Hanfu historically have at least 3 layers, underwear (replaced by modern underwear), middle wear (the white shirt that she wore), and outer wear.
@@hunglac7578 Thanks. In Film and Games, being that I am a bit of a history buff, I always notice how modern underwear and underwear concepts creep in. But I have no knowledge about asian historical clothing, so I do not know what or if any underwear was worn by them.

You mentioned doing a future video on wrapping the right side before the left. I'm curious -- has that been done, yet? As far as I can tell, Korean hanbok also wraps that way. And I know in Japan the insistence on wrapping the right side under the left is a feature in all kimono. They claim that custom was borrowed directly from China, and it seems before contact with China they probably wrapped the other direction. So I'm curious what the practice was like in China, how far back it goes, and what it originally meant.

One cannot ignore the Confucian principles and ethics, while originating in China, were shared by Korea, Japan, Okinawa, and Vietnam. Crossing the left over the right was done by everyone unless one is a corpse. Then the opposite would be the case. China has had a very long history, and people, especially in the West ,have short memories on how they view the timeline of history. Hence the recent view that China was a poor, backward country. This was not the case before the 19th century. China is East Asia's Greece and Rome. The cultures that were to develop in the neighboring countries, owe much of its influence from China. For instance in Japan, they gad no form of writing until they were exposed to the culture of China, which was already old at that point. Even today, "Kanji," Chinese characters, make up a good portion of written Japanese. Even in Korea, a country that developed its own form of writing, learning Chinese characters was a mark of learning and scholarship. This was also the case in Vietnam. Korea had such an admiration of classical Chinese culture, that civil officials continued to wear Ming style court dress, and not that of the Manchus. They also kept alive much of the Confucian ethics and ceremonies even into the 20th century.

Some can be hang on hangers, the rest can be folded for storage. They are not that different from modern clothes ;)

I would be interested in knowing what styles were worn outside of court or wealthy families. By tradespeople or shopkeepers, wives not mixing in top society such as those of magistrates, literati etc. The wide sleeves and multiple layers of silks are great to show you have plenty of maids/money but you never see the styles of the common people. And I would be interested if anyone can help with where to look for knowledge. Thank you.
