As a retired lineman I can honestly say that climbing that way looks like a pain in the ass. Never climbed a pole belted in in all my years. I retired in 1997 and the old timers would have kicked me off of their truck if I tried to climb belted in. There's so much crap on the poles that it would take you all day just to get to the top.

All these comments decrying the new equipment and complaining how they did it better back in the day......was that way worth the deaths and severe injuries that virtually don't exist anymore from falls and burns that came with free climbing? I have been climbing for 28 years, free climbing most of that and while I didn't care for the conversion, you adjust and can do everything more safely. What use is a job if you can't go home in one piece at the end of the day? Good instructor in the video, I tend to favor a tighter grouping of poles and positioning myself in such a way I can see most of what is going on (he has his back to half his group at any time). If it's their first time transitioning, you should have someone demonstrating each step as he explains it. I prefer to demonstrate while explaining.

When I was going through climbing school there was never any of this double safety bullshit..You free climbed up and over objects, dudes were hitting the ground then gone the rest of the class..7 graduated out of 20…That’s where the saying comes from separating the men from the boys ..Linework wasn’t for everyone now apparently it is

Up thru secondary meanwhile WWTF . and the students are doing things even before he finished instruction. what a joke. Christ one guys humpin a pole . Man hes the one ID go AFter , Trying to impress without even listening first. Thats the danger kid.. Dont have to be para military training but it wouldnt hurt to train mechanics over and over till u got it down without having to think it thru. The mechanics suck here. simple things like buckling. One guys reaching across with opposite hand . Its just weird to me.. Tell me Im wrong I dunno???!!!

What are you even going on about? What the guy is doing is building confidence in his equipment. The teachers want to see that since that is a what keeps most people from reaching the top. I even hand like he does sometimes. its pretty good for resting your legs and feet.
