    Another point to make is what happens if the overflow clogs or breaks siphon. Having a smaller 3rd chamber in the sump (which you do) helps prevent the DT from overflowing when the return pump turns back on. Great vid!!

      paul matyskiel That sounds like a good idea. just follow the dosing instructions on the bottle. Also make sure you keep up with your water change to keep the water clean. Good luck and let me know how you make out. it will probably take a few weeks to come down, but the stuff works great.

    I like the idea of running the return to the bottom of the tank to ensure good circulation and these siphon breaks would be a good way of ensuring that it does not drain the tank.

  • @willparsons32
    @willparsons32 Před rokem

    Great 👍🏻 idea with the syphon breaks however, i noticed that the return line with the spout is only a few inches below the surface of the water. Once the water level has dropped below the outlet end of the return line, it should break the syphon anyways... Would it not?
    I could see this working if the end of the return lone was deeper below the surface of the water.
    The other thing also, if your water level drops (due to evaporation) the syphon break will cause the pump from working properly but that is if you don't have a top-up system in place, i guess!😏

    Thanks for the video, quick question.. I'm looking at building a sump of my own..
    When you do lose syphon on your overflow box, what happens then?
    What preventative options do I have to make sure that my sump doesn't pump all the water into the main display and empty the contents of the sump? Any advice would be appreciated.

    • @thereefrookie7320
      @thereefrookie7320  Před 8 lety +1

      +Candace A Hi Candace, thanks for stopping by. What I did was make sure that my return section of my sump was sized so that in the event I lost siphon on my overflow, then the chamber would go dry before the tank over flows. I figure it was better to replace a pump then have a flood. I also make sure that my ATO reservoir is not big enough to flood the tank as well, because if the return section drops the ATO will kick in. I must say though, almost 2 years with my Eshopps and I haven't lost siphon. (knock on wood). I hope this helps. Good luck and feel free to subscribe!

    • @samcarrs
      @samcarrs Před 6 lety +8

      Keep your return pump at a higher level in you sump so if you loose power or siphon you don’t flood over the main tank.

    • @knwr
      @knwr Před 3 lety +1

      Also you can drill a small hole in the siphon tube and attach a powerhead or air pump that sucks air. That way it is always removing air and recreating a siphon if it ever stops. See the new acrylic slim overflows for an example.

    What about the hob overflow? Will it ever lose siphon? Since my tank is not drilled and so the only way is the hob overflow. Thinking of getting the pf 800 like yours but scare it might lose siphon one of these days when there is a power outage

      john tran Hi john ive used the “hob” pf 800 on my 90 gallon freshwater for a little over a yr now and I’ve killed the electricity my self doing improvements several times and I’ve never had it lose siphon. Seems to be a great little overflow. My biggest regret is not getting the 1200 instead. Hope this helps !!

      What ghp your pump is pumping the water back to your pf 800? My tank is like nearly 6 feet tall including with the stand. I dont know which pump i should buy if i get the same exact hob overflow your using since i have to consider the height it pumps up to the tank.

    • @mateo85tx
      @mateo85tx Před 6 lety

      john tran I honestly don’t remember the brand but I believe it can pump up to 1600gph. I have a ball valve on it to control the return flow. Also a lot of people like flex hose, I use 1in PVC I like that i can build it exactly how I want without things flopping around. Add a couple unions makes it super simple to take apart if need be.

    • @mateo85tx
      @mateo85tx Před 6 lety

      Just make sure you get the right size overflow, meaning you want it to circulate all the water in your aquarium a minimum of 6 times per hr. 7-10 times even better! Strictly IMO

  • @TheProudMountain
    @TheProudMountain Před 8 lety +1

    so this is how you prevent your filter tank from flooding everything but whats with the tank? how can u prevent the tank from overflowing then somehow your overflow stops working and the return pump is still pumping water up into the main tank?

    • @thereefrookie7320
      @thereefrookie7320  Před 8 lety +3

      Hi thanks for stopping by. To prevent that you need to figure out what size to make your chamber that hold a your return pump. my chamber will run dry before over flowing. I figured it's better to replace a burned pump then flooding the living room. I hope this helps and feel free to subscribe!!

    Quick question I have a 75 gallon reef with nitrates at 40 ppm if I did my calculation right I should be dosing 7 ML minus live rock and sand should I be splitting it up like half in the morning and other half at night or 7 in morning and another 7 at night might be stupid question but just dont want to mess things up thanks.

      @thereefrookie7320  Před 9 lety

      paul matyskiel Hi, that's a good question. I dosed the whole amount at once, but you may want to check with red sea. If you go to Reefcentral.com, Res Sea has a section in the forums where you can ask that. They are great at getting back with the answer. I just would hate to give you the wrong answer. Also, make sure your skimmer is running as thats what exports the product consumed by the bacteria.
