It seems pretty clear that Piccolo was being exhausted faster than he could deal sufficient damage. Though he definitely had a better chance of winning against 17 than Vegeta did against 18.

Stamina isn't consistent in DB. For all we know Piccolo could have had enough gas to handle both androids. Look at Goku vs. Frieza, then compare it to basically any fight afterward where sometimes the fighters go for minutes before gassing out or hours for the next.

Saying his IQ when he’s tired will save him even when his best attempts were already thwarted is basically saying “idk but he’ll figure it out”
IQ matters a lot of in face of certain situations it’s not gonna mean anything, piccolo is gonna keep getting tired and the more tired he gets the less he’ll be able to think straight

Aside from the fight between Piccolo and 17, it almost started to seem like they were becoming rivals instead of enemies. In fact, I actually like how Piccolo and 17 call a sort of truce after Cell shows up. Piccolo even alters his plan outright and instead just tells 17 to run for it. And after Piccolo uses his Light Grenade on Cell, 18 actually seems happy with the result. Also, in the anime, when Cell nearly kills Piccolo, 17 actually says "Piccolo...no!", as though he were sorry to see him go.
I don't know, it just seemed to me like Piccolo was quickly earning the respect of the androids up until Cell showed up. MAYBE THEY COULD HAVE BEEN BROS

If the fight had dragged on, 17 would have outlasted Piccolo and eventually finished him off. However, Piccolo is smarter than that and if he would have found a way to hit 17 with the Light Grenade it would have definitely obliterated the android, even if 18 stepped in. As you said though, it's likely that 16 would have done something to save them. Really great analysis for one of the top 5 best fights in the series. 👍
i'd like to think piccolo had one more technique after light grenade. knowing the consquences and being the most powerful of the earth good guys at this time... he would deff have made sure to make sure 17 was messed up good before he went down too.

Idk..16 only Interest at that time was fighting Goku..not jumping into 17 fight, and I believe 17 told them to stay out of the fight..17 does have a fighters pride.
In Dragon Ball Super, Android 17 says he would've lost to Super Saiyan Goku if they had fought in the past. We also have to remember that Piccolo was able to stand against his own vs Cell Jrs. so I think he would've beaten Android 17 eventually.

@@noire.blackheart that a Goku that had mastered Super Saiyan not the one that was covering the Piccolo vs 17 fight. Also, the Piccolo that matched a Cell Jr. was a much stronger Piccolo than the one that fought 17 because he went back into the Time Chamber to train before the Cell Games.
My favorite short-fight from DBZ. I was mindblown watching this when I was young seeing Piccolo introduce TWO new special moves in the Hell Zone Grenade and Light Grenade. It felt like we never saw new moves in DBZ often unless a new character came.
Piccolo vs 17 is in my top 5 best fights of DBZ too. It's such a well written and interesting back and forth. Definitely want to see DBS settle the score someday. I always felt like after the cell arc that those two would of made great rivals like Goku/Vegeta, trying to constantly one up each other.
Dude yea, it's soooo epic. That white flame aura around Piccolo with his back turned is one of the most badass panels in Dragon Ball. He was stronger than every Saiyan at that point. If only he would've challenged 18 instead, then Cell would've been screwed, Piccolo was quite a bit above 17 but not a lot, he was way over 18. She mentioned stepping in to finish the job if 17 couldn't so it's hard to say if even the androids themselves knew who was stronger, they didn't have scanners like 16.
@@Valientlink All things considered if Cell didn't show up 18 would of got involved if 17 got into trouble 100%. It would of been interesting to see a multiple Z fighters vs 2-3 androids battle. I only feel 16 would ge involved if someone decided to go after him while he was watching.

no... that vegeta could also do damage to perfect cell. even tho he had to ask him to take on the attack. but still that vegeta im sure could handle 16.
17, pretty sure piccolo knew he was gonna lose if he got too tired because he says something close to that I think.
The main problem of the androids was there stamina, even if u were a little stronger than 1 you’d still likely lose. The strength difference would have to be significant

Piccolo statement about 17's lack of power and his amazing speed seemed to me it was just to make clear about how focused on speed 17 was, while Piccolo was more on the raw power and technique side.
I don't know if light grenade could kill 17, first because it seems to take some time to charge it up, second cuz 17 is kinda fast, third because I don't know if that could break the barrier and 17 natural defense all together.
Infinite stamina is a huge deal in this match, tbh
I think the androids (namely 17) gained a new found respect for Piccolo during the fight so even if it came to it I don't think he would killed Piccolo. Piccolo was clearly running out of steam though however 17's arrogance may have left some kind of opening that Piccolo would take an advantage of. Could have gone either way really.
It would have left an opening with his ultimate attack but he used it on cell.
Android 17 was visibly afraid of the light grenade, and the fact that he decided to run tells me his shield wouldn’t have held up. Although it is entirely possible Piccolo would have also tired out beforehand. It could have went either way tbh

Prewatch: I think piccolo would have done major damage to 17 with light grenade, but I think 17 would survive and outlast him, 9-10, high diff
Edit: I think the androids cannot compress ki/energy. They can mould it into different shapes for attacks and barriers, but they cannot compress it into higher levels of strength.
Ex. If both of them have a power output of 10 at base, then 17 cannot output more than 10 even though he can infinitely output that 10. Piccolo could use a technique which compresses the ki in a unique way that increases its output. Let's say special beam cannon compresses the ki 2x. Then his max output is 20 while 17 is stuck at 10. Although techniques are much more draining as compressing ki seems to be more difficult than just moulding ki. That would be why so many people use the Kamehameha, as it has a specific pattern for them to follow for compressing the ki
1 big problem is that cell had to load up the light grenade. If 17 can get his barrier up for a surprise attack he can definitely do it for that one.

If he used the light grenade on 17 earlier in the fight I think it would probably overpower his energy shield , probably. But I think piccolo was only slightly stronger, the more they fought it became dead even , piccolo still being able to keep up but lacking the power to finish the fight , same thing with 17 but he can’t get tired . One of the best fight’s because it was so close. Also makankosappo probably one shots if hits
17 may have infinite stamina but I don't imagine that this fight would have gone on for much longer. Piccolo was likely working on another strategy to take 17 out in one attack. I could see Piccolo being able to pull it off.
If Piccolo decided to physically disable 17, he'd take the fight and I'm pretty sure he would come to that conclusion before he became too exhausted. And the Light Grenade made 17 shit his pants worse than the Hellzone Grenade. But...17 did really show that he is pretty smart in a fight, however, I think his cockiness during that timeframe would have lead to him actually losing.
This might have been the closest thing to a draw in all of Z

Piccolo would have won, agreed. The light grenade would have vaporized 17, barrier shield or not, the end result would have been the same. This is made clear when Piccolo launches the attack and we see 17 running away from it + 18 surprised by the brute force of that special move. In fact, without his bubble, I am pretty sure Piccolo's hellzone grenade would have nuked 17 in that very moment. This scenario is also without considering the fact that a powered up special beam canon = would pretty much single shot 17, hands down, but only if Piccolo can actually hit his target.
Piccolo likes to be deceptive while 17 is arrogant. That combination leads me to think piccolo would have created an opening and wrecked 17’s short life

I'm pretty sure Piccolo was a about to win. He was saving the light grenade as a last resort probably to try and finish 18 later with it. Even with the force field I doubt 17 would have survived. Also doubt either 18 or 16 would step in to save 17. 16 only step in to fight Cell because he knew if Cell fused he would destroy everything, and 16 appreciated the world despite being a robot. 16 fought to prevent the world from being destroyed, not to exactly save 17 and 18.
I'm really loving these breakdowns using the manga. How bout a video going over how strong everyone was at the Cell games relative to each other? There's a fair amount of people who are confused in that area. Maybe use numbers to make it easier to follow perhaps saying something like if Goku is a 10 then Cell is a 22 and Vegeta an 8.5 or 9 and ss1 Gohan a 12.
Thank you for your generosity. I can definitely do a video at some point giving my thoughts on the relative "power levels" of the characters at that point. Though, it may take some time to research and gather the exact scenes I'll use to elaborate on that.

I think 17 edges out still if the fight drags on. Since 17 has unlimited energy and his stamina is a lot stronger then Picollo . Thats if the fight drags out. If piccolo gets the job done asap and kills 17 at start of the fight with his full power then yhhh he wins. So depends on how quick piccolo gets the job done.

Piccolo also knows the mafuba which they conveniently forgot, so he could have ended that pretty quickly if it wasn't for entertainment's sake.
One thing to mention is 17 was taking damage, so his fighting ability was also decreasing, meanwhile Piccolo is able to regenerate some to lessen damage but also doesn’t have infinite stamina.
But yeah, 16 steps in before Piccolo could kill 17.

That's a good point actually... 16 would definitely not let Piccolo kill one of them, though if not for the energy shield, the hellzone grenade would've surely taken 17 out so maybe he wasn't at a point yet where he cared and just had Goku on his mind. It seems Cell changed the way all 3 of the androids thought, then again so did Piccolo's strength.
This fight was one of the best raw fights with reasonably high stakes. We don't get these types of fights anymore

I agree with what's said in the Video it's true that 17 had the stamina and Defensive advantage but Piccolo had the Offensive and tactics Advantage not to mention hundreds of years of fighting experience at this point, 17 was obviously overconfident and had basically shown all his cards but Piccolo was fighting to the Death from the start and actually had reserves that even pushed Imperfect Cell back for a short time, not to mention Piccolo's regeneration as well.

I think 16 said his scanners indicated that they where pretty much evenly matched. 17 had unlimited stamina, however, while Piccolo had his regeneration abilities, so, yeah. It could go either way, with things probably a bit more in 17's favor.
Before I even watch 17, piccolo was losing stamina and was equal power wise at his peak. So he couldn’t really win, you have to outclass the androids or have hax if you’re equals

Or you'd need to focus on maiming, harming their body in ways to stunt their performance. Doesn't matter if you have infinite stamina if I break both your arms. Easier said than done but still...
@@TresBS1 im with you. But the strategy should be to completely destroy the targeted limbs. Even if you lose they'll be weakened permanently so your friends have a better chance. Dr gero was gone so there was nobody around that could build a new arm or leg for the androids besides the briefs but that's a moot point

I think you made some good points, I think 17 takes the fight 6/10 times but Piccolo is one of the better tacticians in the series so even when getting tired there's a good chance he could think of something clever to win the fight
Piccolo vs 17 is the best street fight we ever saw in DBZ.
So, not exactly on the topic of the video, but I’ve been watching the Android saga again, and I noticed a bit of proof of something you’ve talked about, how their auras serve a defensive purpose. During the fight between SSJ Vegeta and 18, Vegeta chases her down a highway and for a moment stands in the road to track her next move. A car is coming, and you get a nice side shot of Vegeta expanding his aura in preparation to fly after her, and it’s clearly animated that the car hits his aura and explodes well before it comes anywhere near his body. I thought that was pretty nicely illustrated there. Poor dude in the car probably didn’t get wished back on the Dragon Balls though, lol.
I think it would be the same like with Vegeta vs 18. The android can't get tired so that's a huge advantage
But they CAN get hurt and Piccolo was clearly doing damage to 17.

I kind of have a love-hate relationship with these DBZ analysis channels, I often find myself disagreeing with their assumptions and deductions. Your channel was the first one I ever found and I'd have to say the one I agree with on the most occasions.
#17 looked way too surprised at the Light Grenade Piccolo used against Cell for me to bet on him. As long as Piccolo could figure a way to hit him with it, which I think he would, he wins, stamina be damned.
Since #18 can't sense energy, I don't think she'd step in either until the last moment when it'd be too late. #16 could and probably would save him but I think he's fair enough to convince #17 afterward that he lost as that attack would've killed him, they should acknowledge Piccolo as the winner, and leave to find Goku the long way.
I personally believe that if Piccolo had used the Special Beam Cannon with a full charge (as seen in Super during his battle with Frost) the beam would be penetrated 17's Barrier and killed him on the spot, as for The Light Grenade... if 17 had been hit by that then and only then would 16 and 18 be jumping into the fight to save 17 if he was still alive following the blast.
Piccolo versus Android 17 is one of the most even fights in the series. Even before the fight, Android 16 states that Piccolo fusing with Kami is on par with Android 17, when detecting Piccolo's first fight with Cell, but 17 just refuses to believe it. When 17 is about to fight Piccolo again he underestimates him because of how easily he beat Piccolo in their first fight. Underestimating Piccolo led to 17 having a bad start in their rematch. After taking the fight seriously, both Piccolo and 17 are shown to be evenly matched. However, when it comes to the androids, the best way to beat them is to be significantly stronger than them, and the fight with Piccolo and 17 best showcases that. I would argue that Piccolo was the better fighter, but because Piccolo has roughly the same level of power as 17, stamina is an important factor in the fight, and Piccolo is already aware that he can't waste too much energy when fighting androids like 17. While the light grenade was shown to be a powerful attack, I am not sure Piccolo would have used that technique unless it was a last resort because he can't afford to waste energy. I honestly think that had Cell not interfered, 17 might have been able to defeat Piccolo if the fight dragged on too long.

Piccolo would change his strategy and try to hit him with a Light Grenade. He could use the Zanzoken like he did against Frost recently to buy time and confuse him. Knowing how stupid and confident 17 was back then he would fall into the trap or simply try to take it just as Perfect Cell did against Vegeta's Final Flash.
I've already seen this video a while back but I've watched it again. This definitely one of the best fights of the show hands down, because at this point in the series we don't know that much about 17 as much as Piccolo, being one of the protagonists at this point, although he still had that anti-hero personality of his in the arc, before his that Kami fusion balanced out when they reunited. We got to see Piccolo finally bust out all these moves and blasts that he's never really had to use seeing as Goku was the earth's hero and Piccolo only shows up to help defend it (and protect Gohan) a common trope of his even in the movies. Piccolo gets the W here.

It would basically just be the same thing that happened when Vegeta fought 18, only it would take a lot longer. Having infinite energy, in addition to violating physics, is extremely OP.
Seems like a lot of people just want piccolo to wins so that’s what they’re saying.
Anything that would finish 17 off would need to be loaded, hell zone worked because it caught 17 off guard, something like Special Beam Cannon and light grenade won’t be able to do such a thing.

@@karnage2948At the end of the day, nobody except Akira Toriyama knows who would’ve won because the fight was interrupted before it’s conclusion with the two being evenly matched. So don’t act like people only think Piccolo would win just because they wanted him to. There are valid arguments for why both fighters could’ve won (Piccolo’s IQ, light grenade, and special beam cannon, and 17’s infinite stamina)
@@karnage2948 personally think Piccolo would’ve won because 17 saw light grenade with fear in his eyes, didn’t even bother trying to use his barrier and opted to run away. It’s clear that he understood at the very least, he would’ve been highly damaged and probably destroyed. How would Piccolo land the attack? I don’t know how specifically but there are ways such as creating a distraction, playing to his ego (like vegeta did with cell when he used final flash), or paralyzing him somehow. Again, I don’t know how exactly he would’ve done it, but piccolo being a smart fighter and 17 showing arrogance which often leads to character’s downfall in dbz, it’s not too far fetched to say Piccolo could’ve pulled it off

The momentary burst of ki usage to to make for powerful attacks, as explained in the Namek saga, is really the difference between the Z fighters and everyone else.

It’s 50/50 honestly. 17’s problem was that he was too cocky. Piccolo could potentially take advantage and land a big shot. But if Piccolo can’t hit any finishing moves 17 will out last him.
People sleeping on Piccolo not realising he was going for killing moves all fight and just got unlucky with the Hellzone Grenade. 17 lacks martial arts experience and all it would take would have been Piccolo to catch him out with one big attack like the Light Grenade.
Random thought. Can you imagine how screwed the Z Fighers would have been if all 5 of the androids(Gero,19, 18, 17, and 16) were on the same page and worked together as a group similar to The Ginyu Force? This would also mean Android 16 being evil rather than passive/friendly. I don't even think we would have made it to the Cell portion of the saga lol

I actually agree it wasn't a power dump and then destroy. They were so evenly matched that it was a nail-biting who's going to take it moment's. Also the first time I saw my favorite attacking strategy and no I'm not kidding. The heat-seeking multiple blasts of piccolo setup. 😎
Piccolo could have won if he would have used all of his energy at the start in one vicious attack string with a fully charged up special beam cannon with everything he had but as a fight went on he couldn't maintain his overall advantage over 18 due to stamina issues
In the video game called Dragon Ball Super Sonic Warriors Piccolo went to new Namek after Super Buu was created he used the namekian Dragon Balls to revive King Piccolo and fuse with him

Yeah. Exactly what I was thinking. Well, I thought the Light Grenade would only work as long as 17 didn't put up his barrier, but perhaps even with that, the Light Grenade would've vaporized 17. That, or the Special Beam Cannon. Only issue is that both of those attacks take a significant amount of time to dodge and it would be very difficult for Piccolo to find an opening before he tired out since he and 17 are even in strength. So it's a tough call, but Piccolo's pretty smart, he could probably figure something out.
This fight is what made me love Piccolo so much. His tactics, his brutality, etc...

That last technique blast that he used against cell would’ve more than likely killed 17. 17 even thought it was enough to kill cell and was shocked damn near in fear of cell when he survived it. Yeah I believe piccolo was saving that for when he had nothing left.

Piccolo wins, but just barley.
Although 17 has infinite energy, that doesn't protect him from the damage he takes. If damage is in abundance then it renders 17 helpless. This is proven by Cell (when he beats 17 before he absorbs him) and Future Trunks (beating the androids).
Piccolo being slightly stronger makes the difference, and after being burnt out, he still had the power output to destroy 17 with the Light grenade.
If I had to guess, Piccolo wanted to inflict as much damage as possible to 17 and to force him to use any "ace in the holes" w/o revealing his.
With that in consideration he would take an opening that 17 gave him. If 17 presents that opportunity is the problem; however, Piccolo has two moves that raise his power level significantly to destroy 17 or to cause great damage immobilizing 17 to do a killing blow.
The drawback is they take a bit to charge which is why Piccolo needs 17 to make a mistake in order to get the full effect of the techniques.

This fight was so memorable for me. Android 17 was one of my favorite characters, and then seeing him team up with Piccolo after was like, woah man, this is great. I was 7 eating a kid cuisine when it first aired, watching it on a VHS recording.
Kid cuisine, ugh. I ate them too, but everytime I think of it now my stomach churns.

Actually we know for a fact that the androids can amplify their ki like the Z warriors can since according to the description of 17's barrier you need to double your power to project it, so yeah
the 3 what if fights didnt end in DB series to me are Jacky vs Tien, this one and Gohan Vs Dabura
In my opinion, Piccolo could have won. If Piccolo makes a mistake, he can heal it back with the cost of energy. If 17 makes a mistake, the game is over.
If 17 doesn't make a mistake, and plays defensive and a bit smart, he probably would usually win; however, the possibility of losing is still there.
Personally there are a few factors basically preventing Piccolo from winning this fight.
1. The other Androids would have probably got involved had it got to close
2. Androids infinite stamina makes them a monster in close fights like this
3. How destroyed does an Android need to be to die? Likely their entire body or atleast the main "chip"
When Piccolo use the light grenade against Cell is clear that he was going to win against 17.
I don't think the stamina question is that clear cut. 17 won't ever get tired, but Piccolo has the advantage of being able to regenerate any injuries suffered during the fight. As long as they're both trading blows that do damage, Piccolo can potentially wear 17 down through accumulated damage while 17 is wearing Piccolo down through energy expenditure.
I dont get why people think 17 would win when Picollo knew 17 had infinite energy and explicitly stated that as one of his advantages. so he clearly knew what he was getting into, It'd be tough but i think he would take the W otherwise he woudln't have even tried
We don't know if piercing techniques (Special Beam Canon/Destructo Disc), or particularly strong techniques (Tri Beam/Final Flash) are enough to break 17s barrier. No limits were established for it. I'm sure it doesn't block everything. There's no reason to assume it blocks everything. We just don't know.
