- You probably know about the Burrell collection in Pollok park, Glasgow but did you know some of its Astonishing history?
In this video I delve into the story of its connection to ancient Egypt, a storm on the high seas and the only daughter who was left out of the collection.

One of the best video series on CZcams! 👍(From someone who born & raised in Pollok & the old Gorbals, & now lives in Australia!)
Thanks
Another excellent video. I live a short walk from Pollok Park and really missed the Burrell while it was being refurbished. I think the changes have really improved it though and it is an amazing collection. Even made me an art fan with the works by Degas. The entre park is one of Glasgows crown jewels and it is so nice to see the other improvements made along with the current redevelopment of the old stables.
I was bunking off school the day it opened and accidentally saw the Queen. I had no clue about it. Just wanted to see that new building. So I always know where I was on that day.
amazing video thank you! Im starting work there next week and this is some great back ground history i didn't know, love the channel, keep up the good work :)
Good luck with the new job, I may see you there soon ;-D
I was at the Burrell just before it closed. When I asked what the exhibit of the large tarp & bucket was, I got a strange look. As expected 😂. I was fortunate to return this past autumn. I’m enjoying you videos very much. Thanks
Great stuff! Shared to my facebook place.
Awesome, thank you!
That shuttle bus is a great idea as it’s a heck of a walk otherwise.
do a vid of the only grotto i know its in ross hall park ,very famous person who built the grottos, rosshall itself must have a history ,then u could cycle to crookston castle then go to pollok house again and film the pigmy site ,you could do the vid in 1 day easy bro and i would reckon your grotto vid would be a great 1 i did check out the history of those and yea they are amazing looking and man made by a very famous person at the time dont want to spoil any homework you might do on it :)laters bro
Great suggestions mate, I will absolutely add that to the list.
@@AstonishingGlasgow i will add st james church which is next to crookston castle on lyoncross rd that was also from pollokshaws taken down and rebuilt brick by brick ,just like the vid u put up ,yes you will get a great vid out of it i look forward to it :) take care
I have 3 more relocated buildings to do a part 2 at some point and that church is on the list.
@@AstonishingGlasgow brilliant ,your are great at doing this thanks :)
Why 4 miles from Killearn
At the time he donated the collection to Glasgow, the city was still full of industry and he was concerned that the pollution would harm the artifacts so he wanted them stored outside Glasgow. I THINK the Killearn connection was down to his friendship with an art dealer who lived near Killearn so he had considered it a nice location in the countryside away from Glasgow.
please was the golden stool taken from the Ashantis during the war???
I dont know but leave it with me and I will see what I can find out.
@@AstonishingGlasgow ok thanks...I hope to hear from you thanks
Surely all the "stuff" will have to be returned to the countries it came from 🤔
I wouldnt have thought so. The stuff that museums are returning tends to be ceremonial pieces and things that were looted from the country of origin. Burrell bought all his collection at auction and allthough some of it may have ended up there by less that legal means I dont think Burrell can be held guilty.
@@AstonishingGlasgow What about the poor countries who had to sell their possession to a very rich shipping magnet. You would have thought with him being a prominent freemason, that might have upset GCC....wonder if there are any old slippers in the collection 🤔.
On the flip side, what about the poor countries that built schools or hospitals by selling possessions to a rich shipping magnate? What about the residents of Glasgow that have learned about other parts of the world by seeing Burrells treasures? If the items belonged to the person selling them or the country of origin they had every right to sell them to whoever they wanted to. Do we at some point need to return every antique to the family of the person who sold it in the past because it is now worth more?
