Ang Escolta ang paboritong puntahan ng tatay namin noong 1970’s. Meron syang kaibigan na destista sa isang lumang building jaan. At jaan kami dinadala ng tatay namin para mag pa dentista. The good oldest. Na kaka miss ang panahon noon. Mabuti nalang May isang blogger na tulad mo para ipakita ulit ang mga nakaraan. Salamat sayo.

I was a a poor probinsiyana, in 1954 to 1963, I studied in a Manila HS, at age 12, then on to college. I used to walk from Carrie do to escolta, stop at Santa Cruz church, just to watch people walk by, window shop, (. Can’t afford to buy anything then) I was not even interested in history and architecture of the building, but I was fascinated by the beauty, the size, the height of the building, now, I as I watch your blog, and so much older, I feel I missed so much and want to go back and appreciate more the beauty and history of our country. I love your blogs

A lot of these architectural buildings does still exists in major US Cities!! It’s just so funny the place where you toured where there was this circular staircase and you mentioned somekinda like the smell that has an Antique Historical place was a reminiscent of my previous office here in Chicago. Yes, we even have an elevator here that you have to open the metal door manually as if you have taken back in time. 😱😅😝😊That’s how the people here preserve the importance of history. And ESCOLTA should also be preserved as a remnants that has a great influence of American past!😱😝😊🥰

In Escolta, my father bought my bicycles at Kairuz in the late 50’s. Rollfast was my first bicycle and years later my second one was a Columbia. Before those bikes,I had a red fire truck with a bell on the hood that was made in the USA also purchased at Kairuz. I enjoy window shopping at Syvel’s when I was an engineering student at Mapua Institute of Technology during 1963.

I’m so thankful and thrilled to discover this documentary about the truly amazing place of the most memorable time in my “work life” - Escolta! My first job during and after college was with the Associated Banking Corporation (at ABC building which was directly right across the PNB building the construction of which I witnessed from the excavation of the ground until its completion). For four years in the late sixties I enjoyed the early morning walk to the office along the multi-colored mosaic tiled sidewalk of Escolta from the bus stop at Quiapo, passing by those beautiful historic buildings featured in the video clip. In my capacity at ABC I had to intermittently visit just about all the banks in the area in order to conduct inter-bank transactions, did my shopping at Bergs, Aguinaldo’s and others, and dined at Savory Chicken, etc. I’m naturally saddened by the destruction of the PNB and the state of disrepair of other structures. It’s been over 50 years since I left the country (before Martial Law) and I long to visit the area one more time before I “turn into an angel” (so to speak). Thank you for undertaking such a commendable effort of chronicling our very rich heritage; more power to you and may God bless you and yours. .

I've been there few times in Escolta, my father was a Chinese and worked in Ongpin. I was always in Sta Cruz growing up going to movie in Ideal cinema as the usher who checked the ticket was my father's friend, cinema is gone already. I was always waiting for my father to meet in up in Avenida and did a lot of shopping with my father. Every time I was waiting for my father there were few call boys around and my father would say maraming bees around me. I had a happy memories of Chinatown and Avenida. The last time I was there was so dark because of the monorail and my favourite Ideal cinema was gone. Thank for showing some part of Escolta I didn't do much of looking around because i wasn't comfortable i guess because I was teenager at that time. I was just careful about the place. I wasn't familiar. I loved those beautiful memories with my very generous father who I was spoiled but of course, I didn't take advantage of his generosity we loved buying gold thing and LP music player. Thanks again for a wonderful memories you were showing in your channel.

I truly love the architecture of the Escolta area. It brought back a lot of memories during my high school days until my the early 70’s when Escolta was the prime business district of Manila. I wish that they would resurrect the district and could serve as a model for the turn of the century architecture. I don’t know why the Philippines could not restore such places just how they did it in Europe. Shoutout from Chicago, Illinois.

I agree with you, sir. During the period from early 2011 to late 2012, I served as a Volunteer English Teacher in Poland, specifically in Eastern Europe. The oldest section of Warsaw, known as Old Town or Stare Miasto, suffered complete destruction during World War II. The Nazi forces demolished everything, including the buildings. Nevertheless, the Polish government made the decision to reconstruct and restore Old Town to its original appearance. As a result, it has become a popular tourist destination in Warsaw, rich in historical significance. I express the hope that our own governments would follow suit in preserving our historical buildings and sites, allowing us, future generations, and others to appreciate the importance of our country's heritage. Yorme Isko Moreno could have been a prime example of a leader capable of rebuilding such landmarks, but he was compelled by his ambitions and influenced by unproductive politicians to pursue the presidency, leading to his defeat. It is my wish that our governments adopt this European mindset of restoring our historical landmarks.

I went back in time...I'm not from Manila but a typical Mindoreño who went to college in one of Manila's universities...and being it's resident for a few decades now, I've been able to go around those areas that you've featured here, thanks for that, it gave me some nostalgic feeling while watching this...but what made me sad about was the picture of the old PNB building...my post-college training was at PNB, Escolta in 1983, on its 12th floor at Organization and Methods Office, it's an awesome building at that time, centralized air-condition, ...lots of memories there...I used to take the stairs up to the 12rh floor for weeks when Ninoy Aquino died because there's always brownouts...I'm lucky I was able to see the grandeur of Escolta in the early 80s...now the lighted avenue during nighttime was no more😔

Many thanks to this video. It brought me back to my younger years mid 1960s to early 70s. I remember the Manila office of my father was in one of those old buildings in the side street beside Philtrust. That building still had iron grills elevator.
Whenever we go to Manila during the school holidays we will go to have a meal in Savory ( the best chicken for me then). Next will be watching a Chinese movie in Capitol theater. The seats were still wood.
Bergs and Syvels is where my mom will buy
    stuff for us.
It was nice to reminisce happy memories of my growing up years.
    My thanks to you Fern.

I was born and grew up in Manila, now 67 years old, but I never knew anything nor seen these buildings. I spent most of my time in Makati where I worked. I am so fascinated at how historic some of the buildings are. I'm so glad I found your channel, I got to know more about my birthplace history before I get really very old and senile, thanks to you. Keep up the good work son. I'm proud of you.

Fern, thanks for sharing this wonderful video of our historic Paris of the East , Pearl of the Orient, etc, which is Manila. Unti unti nang bumabangon ang Manila sa dating pagka lugmok. The Historic Preservation Division of the National Historic Commission is working with the City of Manila in the architectural preservatiion of the Heritage buildings within Manila. Businesses are coming back to Manila, and in the coming years, there will be much more. Because only in Manila within the NCR Region you have these heritage buildings and houses. Manila have so much potential in bringing back history and wondrous sites. Thus revitalization, and redevelopment efforts of our present and future Mayor is very important. Thank you for all the vlogs and there are many many more hidden history to uncover. In other countries, travel walking tours are offered in historic, art, museum, and food districts. Which are added income for Filipinos, also added content for vlogs.

I was work in Escolta beside Calvo Bldg. during 1992 and this was my late father favorite place during his teenage years as he told us before WW2 until to us his children. He always brought us to Escolta to eat in Savory Restaurant during Sunday. So it was very memorable for me this place and until before pandemic happen I usually go to Escolta. And it was really 😢 sad for me coz' it brings back a lot of 😊 happy memories for me and I really missed my parents. Thanks 👍 for uploading this 1 of historical place in Manila. Other said and what I've heard like also you told to this blog that you can feel the old ambiance of that Bldg. there's a lot of ghost 👻 story arise from this place maybe 🤔 of what happened during past century like Intramuros who also a part of our history. Love 😘 love 💞 luv ❤️ it.
