Walls

  • "Walls" was inspired by something pretty mundane: reading Internet arguments. It struck me one day that people can appear to have a conversation while actually misunderstanding one another in spectacular fashion. It's hard to come out of our own, personal worlds and try to understand someone else's when they are often so very different. At least, it is for me, and I don't always want to. This song is about the struggle to try.

there is a wall, a yawning rift
a glass between two plates adrift
I see you shout and start to wave
we talk in riddles, speak charades
    picture worlds we've never seen
and I'll hear things you'd never mean
still I will aim to see your side
and you'll know that I truly tried
and though my darkened spyglass view
could never hope to capture you
through forests, over hills and moors
my canyon wall leans out to yours
there is a wall, a yawning rift
a glass between two plates adrift
    my separation and defense
    my constant curse, my preference
    would that I better understood
how to draw near, I wish I could

I will never stop being impressed with your ability to turn the most mundane of topics into something marvellously poetic. The lyrics and composition blend seamlessly together, and the effect is amazing. Nice job.

I was just thinking the other day how it was a shame how I rarely see poetry about the issues of the digital age. This is a lovely song to prove that such things do exist.

Beautiful, and quite apt; I find myself all too often being sucked into reading just such arguments, wishing I could correct them as a 3rd-party observer... And sometimes making the mistake of trying. : ) Apt.

+newvultraz but in classical music it is illegal to have parallel octaves, and fifths: for good reason too. the harmonies were very rare, it was mostly unisons I think :)

I read your description, but I can't help but imagine this a fitting song for Celestia to sing pre-Nightmare Moon as she notices her sister shutting herself away. Maybe it was the harpsichord or just lyrics that are broad enough to fit into many situations. But well done.

Great song, as always. One of the things I like about your songs is that each one sounds different, and this one is no exception. It's somewhere between a folk song and an opera, and it's brilliant. Also, good choice of topic - the theme of perspective and empathy is one that I love seeing explored, and you've done a good job of that both musically and lyrically. Keep up the good work!

    • @seanmurphy3430
      @seanmurphy3430 Před 8 lety +1

+Sean Murphy Although, to dull the positivity just a bit, the lyrics get a little bit confused near the middle, when you seem to be trying to cram two different metaphors into a song that doesn't really have enough lyrics to go around. Minor nitpick, doesn't diminish the quality of the song, but still worth pointing out.
