  • Retired UT Extension Agent Mike Dennison shows how to build a blackberry trellis out of four t-posts and a 16-foot piece of livestock panel. The blackberries, planted last year, have outgrown their nursery provided stakes. Also, as blackberries do, they will be spreading and multiplying. Mike starts off driving the t-posts into the ground. Once the two end posts are driven into the ground he uses a fencing trick by running a string between them. He uses the string to keep his line of posts straight. After the posts are in place, he attaches the livestock panel to them with t-post clips.

    Great video! I've been wanting to plant berry vines in my yard for quite some time. This gave me such great advice on how to install the trellis structure! Thank you gentlemen!!

    I plan to put this together for my Brooklyn blackberry bushes. If 2020 is anything like last year, I'll also have to buy a freezer for all the many pounds of fruit I'll harvest.

    Take a 2" by 20" length bulb drill bit and drill the hole for the Tpost. It's much easier. Trust me! I can do a post in about one minute and it doesn't break my back.

    Would this also work for Boysenberries and Raspberries??

    How would you keep the birds away from the berries? Asking because I just bought blackberry bushes and am trying to figure out how to keep the jays and wild turkeys from eating them all!

    Can this method be used for grapes??

    • @FamilyPlotGarden
      @FamilyPlotGarden  Před 5 lety +2

      You could use it with grapes but the pruning requirement for grapes might make it difficult. Grapes grow on new growth from one year old wood which means you prune off a lot of the plant every year. This trellis would make it hard because you would have to untangle all the growth to get it out. Here is a video about grapes. it includes some common trellising options. czcams.com/video/20XOym0F0ek/video.html (Starting at 8 minutes)

      Well, Barnaby Jones, I went to the service, finish a biology bachelor, work research, raise my children, retired, and when the pandemic came I had already my pantry ready and my garden full on vegetables and fruits! What about you?
