I have been looking into planting berries on my little farm ( Too Many Oaks Plantation ) in South Carolina while cruising you tube I found your channel. It has been very helpful . Thank you for this video I have now changed my trellis design
I made similar trellises for my blackberries and raspberries but did not notch the posts because it was an extra step that I did not need. I just screwed the cross bars. I added solar post lights and I stained all the trellises Benjamin Moore Kennibukport Green. It is a nice historical color that looks really nice when the garden is finished for the season. It looks great in the winter against the snow. Since BM paint and stains are expensive, I just color match the stain to another brand of paint. I also use the solid stain. It looks just like paint and I have not had any chipping and I stained my first planter 15 years ago. Granted, it did fade, but even with the fading it still looks good. I also propagate the long canes by just getting planters filled with soil and shoving the tip of either the blackberry or raspberry in the soil. To keep it from popping out due to the tension, I place a large rock or brick to keep it in the soil. In less than a month, I have a new plant. I just cut it from the mother plant and transplant it.
That's a great idea! I've been meaning to propagate my blackberries, for FOREVER. Why does there never seem to be enough time for the garden??
Finally! Someone that comes up with garden stuff that beautiful. Totally going to copy cat this and everything is about to get stained black. I was thinking about black stain but was worried that it would look depressing…nope! It looks so classy. Thanks for sharing.
I love the black! It is definitely a bold choice. Be forewarned that it does show the dirt and bird poop a little easier though. It's a color I've seen more commonly in the Massachusetts/New Hampshire area. I had to do some hard convincing with the hubby to do the fence in black, but once that was black, it just made sense to match everything else.

They're technically removable, too, so if your town or HOA has issues with "structures" you can say it's not a structure! 😈

Yes, my constant issue has been having things look nice, since it's in my front yard and I'm in a suburban/semi-urban area where people like to point at front yards, LOL. There's definitely plenty of trellises that do the trick, but I needed something the neighbors wouldn't laugh at too.

Girl, yes! I am painting my raised garden beds! I am using a very dark grey Duramax Valspar paint that matches my house, barn and shed.

A good hard prune helps too! Check out my blackberry pruning post here - resprout.com/pruning-blackberries-spring-summer-fall-winter/. After I did this, my blackberries were definitely less reliant on the trellis. I think I can even shorten the arms now since the plants are skinnier.

LOL, we can make a Baby Hands club! Seriously, I didn't know I had such small hands until I had to measure my hands for a pair of gloves. I'm quite tall (5'9") and wear size 9 in shoes but I wear a XS for gloves. What the heck?! Glad the videos are helping! They've definitely kept me occupied too. ok... I was just watching for fun cuz I felt like i didn't want to deal with concrete. but you had me at 5:02 with the post spike!!!... Wow!! I didn't know that was an option... yay!!!!
Me neither! I just happened to see them at the home improvement store I was like, WHOAH! GAME CHANGER.
Alot of the eye bolts are zinc plated and they'll rust if you mar the coating when screwing them in with pliers. Instead, stick a large screw driver through the eye to make a T handle, use that to turn the eye bolts without marring them.

I think I'm going to try the spike at the bottom of the posts on a temporary trellis I'm considering when I start training some espailer fruit trees. I'm going to train them for a couple of years in pots, then plant them in they're permanent spot when they look nicer.
@@yellowdog762jb That's a great idea! The posts are super easy to uninstall: nice big crowbar and a piece of firewood for leverage did the trick for me!
Hi, your end posts need a Guy-Wire to support the wire strain on the posts. To prevent this and other problems with rotten wood, I built my grape trellis with steel T-Posts and 1/2 EMT tubing sold in 10-ft lengths. (Texas Prepper) uses the steel T posts on four corners and wraps them with lighter gauge fence wire for Triple Crown (semi-upright) Blackberries. Just giving you a few ideas.. We bought our house and there is a 50+ year old grapevine, its all falling down from the wood leaning and/or rotten locust posts with heavy wire like you used.
Got our trellises built. Will have to do vegetable trellises next year

Hi April! I'm just finding you and enjoying your videos. Would you consider doing a video on how you set up your front yard trellis? Specifically how you attached the plastic grid to the wooden trellis frame. I love them!
Haha, you're like the 20th person to ask me about the trellises! That probably means that video will be in my future soon. You're gonna laugh if I tell you how the trellis netting is connected-possibly the lowest tech way possible. The top horizontal board is a 2x4 and the netting has 6" squares. So I simply weaved the 2x4 back and forth through the top row of squares. So the netting just hangs off of the 2x4. It's incredibly strong! I've trellised a whole row of watermelons and squash like that.

Great job! Have you ever tried "Quick End" from Kencove Farm Fence Supply, to terminate wire at end post? No turnbuckles or eyebolts required. Tighten the wire with the Gripple Torque Tool.

To avoid the inevitable leaning of the vertical posts when the wire is tightened, did you consider inserting them into the post spikes (installing the post spikes at an angle too) at an angle to account for the possibility of leaning towards the center when the turnbuckles were tightened?
No, I hadn't considered that! To be honest, I did not forsee the leaning at all and was a little bummed when it happened. That's a great idea though! I might do that if it gets bad.
@@ReSprout Glad you're considering it and found my comment helpful. Since you already have posts in the ground that are leaning, instead of uprooting those posts and re-installing them at an angle, you can use a cable attached to the posts at each end and a turn-buckle tensioned stake in the ground. This might introduce opposing tension to pull the posts straighter, but it might be a tripping hazard. Hope this helps.
@@oldporkchops Yes, the cable is the traditional way to do the trellises, but the reason I couldn't use it was because the trellis is literally 36" (yes, inches) from my fence, which is half leaning itself. Such are the issues of having a small garden! 🤷♀
What do you have in your backyard? I’ve seen the amazing front & sides! Hope you can have the side yard fruit tree espaliers & maybe a greenhouse in your backyard?
I abandoned the backyard to the hubs, LOL! It is 100% full shade back there, so not too useful for me, but that's where we hang out and BBQ and have friends over. I never wanted to garden in the front yard, but that's where the sun was, so that's where I ended up!
Do you have info on making trellises for your tomatoes? Of course I can see from this video how you made the posts but what about the material you used to create the actual trellis that you wind the tomatoes around? I really enjoyed your video, Nice and clear.

Oh! So you mean, how to keep the blackberries trellised inside the trellis structure! Still learning some good methods for that. This is my first year with blackberries. I will keep that in mind for a video in the back of my head!

Hi Leslie, I have 18" aisles and 24" beds. The trellises are oriented NW to SE. I didn't have too many options though based on my property layout, though.

Thanks for such great content! I bought blackberry and boysenberry plants last year but I am too chicken to plant them, lol! They grow crazy good here in Oregon so I'm afraid they will take over. The roots can get out of hand. Any advice on getting over my fear?

Hi Ginger! We actually have a black front door and black shutters on our house, so I convinced the hubby to do a black fence (took some convincing let me say, LOL). Once the fence was black, staining the trellises and beds black (yes, "Ebony") seemed natural. It all matches real nice if I do say so myself. 😎😜

What is the narrowest I can keep blackberry bushes? I have a 4-ft strip of good land in the garden but not sure if that is wide enough for a row of blackberries (Prime Ark Freedom). Of course I'll need to be able to walk in front as well :/
Hey Sam, I have Prime Ark Freedom and just checked the Stark Bros. website again. They grow 3-4 feet wide. The trellis I built is 3 feet wide, but I can tell you that they are straining against the trellis. 3 feet works but I definitely would not go any less than 3 feet wide. As far as the walkway, you'll need at least 24", probably more. I made the mistake of doing 18" walkways between the two trellises (which I have between my other trellises), not realizing that I wouldn't have the same elbow room. I can't actually between the two trellises now! It's awful. I have to transplant them this year to fix that. Try searching for some smaller varieties. You might have some luck! I think they're container-sized blackberry plants, too, which you could always plant outdoors.

Is notching the wood necessary or for atheistics?
Mostly aesthetics! If you screw it on with two screws, it shouldn't twist. Notches are good to help bear weight, but those arms aren't really bearing weight. So if you want to just screw it in go for it!
I wonder if you can use that stain to paint fruit trees to prevent sunburn??
It's not marketed for that, so I would be a little hesitant, definitely!😬

Can you get FOUR blackberry vines on that trellis?
I did three on mine, but it's gonna depend on the spacing requirements of your plants and how long you make the trellis. You can make the trellises however long you want!

Do NOT put wood posts in concrete--fastest way to promote wood rot in the post I know!
I calculate the depth my posts are going in the ground, add several inches, and cover that length with roofing tar using a flat paint-stiring stick; it takes about a week for the tar to dry. The objective is to prevent water and oxygen from penetrating the wood so the fungal forms that cause wood rot are denied two critical nutrients.
Just another reason not to use concrete! The roofing tar is an interesting tip. I've never heard that!
Galen, saw your other comment on how close they are together. YEEEESS! I definitely put them too close together. I was giving it the same aisle space as my other trellises and that was NOT a good idea for the blackberries. Hopefully I can transplant the right row and fix that this year!
