  • In todays video I take a closer look at my main wildlife lens for the past year, the NIKON 200-400MM F4 VRII. After thoroughly putting this lens through its paces, I wanted to feature the epic wildlife encounters I had while in Yellowstone national park, all captured with the 200-400mm! I hope you guys enjoy!

    Using the 200-400 f/4 VR 1 over 10 years and it almost always has the Nikon 1.4TC attached. Has been used on D300, D500 and Z6ll. Still very happy with it. Continue to use it almost exculsively with my D500.

      I’ve heard the VR I is a great model as well! That might be the way to go if someone is on a tighter budget! Truly stands the test of time, which is exactly what you need in a big lens! D500, my old camera as well, such a beast!

    The 200-400 got an unfairly bad reputation for focus fails at close range. I bought one used ten years ago (the original version, not the VRII) and never suffered any issues. This lens is a better match for full-frame sensors of 24 MP or less, such as the D750, D3/3S, D4/4S, D5, D6. When mated with the D810, that's when the lens' limits become apparent. The lens can't quite keep up with the higher sensor resolution wide-open. Stopped down to 5.6, it will perform well on just about any sensor.

    I use the same combo for sports. It's an excellent lens. I love the color and contrast. I can tell the difference between this and my 300 f/2.8 without looking at EXIF metadata just by the image quality. Remember this is a $7000 lens when it was new. That would put it at about $8 or $9K today. Superb quality.

      Thanks dude! Yeah slightly older lenses with the Z Mount adaptor work really well with the Z6II! There’s always wildlife in your backyard, that’s where I find most of my animals! Birds, foxes, hawks, squirrels, all that stuff you can get Amazing pics in your local area if you find the right spots!

    hi thx for the video and some nice wildlife videos and photos but what's your opinion on the 200-500 5.6. Would that 1 stop difference make a big difference in higher iso... thx

    • @MitchellCoyle
      @MitchellCoyle  Před rokem +1

      Hi there! Thanks for watching, apologies for the slow response- I haven’t been on CZcams much at all lately!
      From my brief experiences with the 200-500 when shooting with my friend who owns and uses this as his main lens - the one stop of light doesn’t seem to make to much of a difference, especially if you’re already at a higher ISO anyways. My friend does really like the 500mm reach that it gets, however we do find that when comparing just general quality the 200-400mm tends to provide just tiny tiny bit better results with image quality. They are very comparable lenses and to decide between buying them it might be up to budget, weight, and the size of your subjects!

    i had the lens. it served its purpose at the time 10 yrs ago. but the 400mm end is soft. the new z100-400 or z180-600 will be the better choice at this time and age. smaller and sharper and cheap too. the f mount 180-400 with internal TC is also dropping price on used market too

    Nice review. I just bought this lens for the same price that you did, and as you said, used but looks new. What foot did you put on this and how do you remove the old foot to swap out? Can you tell me what gimbal your using? Also thinking that the longer the reach of a lens (TC) the more you suffer from atmospheric stacking... aberrations, heat mirage, etc. Thanks!

    • @MitchellCoyle
      @MitchellCoyle  Před 2 lety

      Hi Butch! Thank you! I actually kept the same foot on there and just screwed in your basic (quite long) arca swiss bracket to attach to the gimbal! The gimbal is the Oben Gh-130c and it has been absolutely fantastic! Easy to attach the camera with the arca swiss System and holds the lens well!
      And yes you definitely suffer more with those issues when using the TC! After other comments pointed it out I used a bad example clip for my tc explanation, because all that was was heat mirage as you stated!
      I hope/know you will enjoy the new lens! It has been an absolute favorite of mine since buying it!
