The problem with that train of thought is that there are times in modern films where you THINK its all practical, and the studio SAYS the shot was practical, but its was actually part traditional VFX and part CGI. People say CGI doesn't look good, but when done properly they can't tell the difference.

It's often said that the best effect is the one you don't see. These days the best approach is a combination of that which each does best. Don't use CGI if you can use practical, and when it gets too impractical to use practical, go to CGI. In short use each to their strengths.

Steven Spielberg said that ALIEN was the first Science Fiction film he ever saw where all of his focus was exclusively on the characters, instead of the Special Effects. All of the sets and effects were practical and utilitarian in service to the story. It's a bit of a slow burn, but truly captures the claustrophobic tension of being trapped in a game of hide and seek with a proficiently deadly alien species while stuck in space. A true modern classic.

Fun fact: The alien is (mostly) portrayed by Bolaji Badejo, a Nigerian graphic designer that a member of the casting team randomly encountered in a Soho pub. He was 6 foot 10 and very slender, so he was considered perfect for the role. This is the only film he ever appeared in. He was offered a role in the sequel, but instead he moved back to Nigeria and opened his own art gallery. Unfortunately he passed away in 1992 from sickle cell disease.

Imagine being a life form, born away from your family (no mother, no siblings from other eggs) on a strange ship, hunting to eat and survive, but the crew keep trying to chase you with flame throwers and electro-rods!
In the end you just want to sleep but then some 'bitch' wakes you up with steam and shoots you out the airlock to a tragic death.
RIP Alien, you life was cut short and all you did was hunt and eat and try to survive (for a few days).

Believe it or not- back in 1979 Kenner toys (who just made a fortune on Star Wars toys) released an *18 inch tall* toy of the Alien in time for Christmas. The toy was just as frightening as the R-Rated movie itself!
Parents were shocked and outraged so toy stores pulled it from the shelves. It has become a hot collector item and a genuine 1979 Kenner Alien still in the original box is worth a small fortune!
While I didn't own one myself (I was 9 years old in 1979) a friend of mine did back then- the toy had a mouth that opened with a lever on the back of the head- and had the little "extra jaw" that extended when the mouth opened. Yeah for a kid it was terrifying!

The crew ignoring Ripley had nothing to do with her being a woman. Originally, Ripley was written to be a man but got changed. The ‘one person warning of danger and being ignored trope’ was very common in the 70’s.
The tiny panties were a perfect distraction from seeing the alien right away. Pure Genius. Even after watching it many times over the years ( including at the theater in 1979) I didn’t realize it until I heard every reactor on CZcams comment on Ripley’s drawers.
Dallas and Ripley liked one another just fine; the book mentions that they had a thing together. In the movie the only nod to it is in the end when she lists the dead, referring to everyone by their last names except Dallas. She was irritated with Dallas because he was protecting her by going into the vents.
“Aliens”is the best sequel ever made. After that, I recommend skipping all the others. “Alien 3,” “Alien: Resurrection,” “Prometheus,” and “Covenant” are all bunk. But that’s my opinion.

I gotta disagree about Aliens, but I’m in the minority on that one. I consider this to be a masterpiece, and that one let me down lol. But it is quite different and meant to be.
I mentioned elsewhere, but it’s reasonable to assume it’s because she’s a woman since misogyny exists in our world including when this was made. Also the few female characters who weren’t written for women (mostly by men) are some of my favorites. They’re allowed to be less stereotypical.
The panties argument is a stretch lol. (Edit: a stretch on Ridley’s part if that was his justification rofl. I do also get that the movie was supposed to have a lot of se*ual imagery overall.) There are other ways we could have been distracted, and considering so many men defend and enjoy the scene shows that it served numerous purposes. XD (And no “not all men”.) But if a male character’s undies were falling off and there was some equivalent shot of his junk, everyone, especially dudes, would be complaining for days. We’re just more used to women being shot like that.
Ripley in the tank is shot in a somewhat se*ual way as well, but overall, it does come across as casually realistic. She’s sweaty and just wants to be DONE.

I hadn’t noticed how Parker, who had been focused on money, was the one who said, “What about our lives??” to Ash(‘s head). Considering what he does throughout the movie (suggesting freezing poor John Hurt’s character and sacrificing himself in an attempt to save another coworker), he really is the second most-level headed on the ship and an all around good guy.

So I already knew about androids in the Alienverse. But I had _no idea_ that there were any androids in the first Alien movie. I assumed that was something they introduced in the later installments. So I went into this movie thinking that I knew all the important story beats and it wouldn't hold any real surprises for me. Imagine my reaction when I saw Ash's white blood! Alien is my favorite movie depending on the day of the week I’m asked. On the other days, my favorite is Aliens. In my opinion it’s the greatest sequel ever made, rivaled only by Empire Strikes Back and Terminator 2. Please check it out soon and be sure to watch the Director’s Cut. In my opinion it’s the better version, but you can’t go wrong with the theatrical cut either.
Couple points about this movie: the crew might have had guns but they couldn’t risk using them because the alien most likely has acid blood too. Shooting it would surely kill them all when the blood burns a hole through every floor below it.
It’s not always clear to viewers, but the alien was initially standing in the hallway leading to the shuttle, so Ripley couldn’t get past it. She was trying to turn off the self destruct so she could find another way to deal with the alien. Since she was too late she had no choice but to go back and try to get past it.
I don’t think Ripley hated Dallas at all. In fact, there was a scene in a version of the script where they have sex in the shuttle. Ripley was definitely frustrated with some of his decisions, and the events has her stressed out, but I don’t think she hated him.
I also don’t think Ripley was ignored because she was a woman. Parker agreed with her most of the time and Lambert didn’t. It doesn’t seem like a culture of sexism to me when one of the men agrees with her and the other woman doesn’t. Ash was never going to go along with anything that went against his mission to acquire and protect an alien. Dallas and Ripley simply had good old fashioned disagreements. Unfortunately Dallas made the wrong decisions at every turn when he should have listened to Ripley. I think that’s why he insisted on going into the vents when Ripley was prepared to. He knew how dangerous it was and I think he was taking responsibility for the situation he put them in. He wasn’t about to risk any more lives other than his own.

It has always been my contention that "The Company" is not behind the events of Alien.
It's a single suit. Some desk driver who got a lead on the alien signal and instituted a last-minute crew member change and inserted a special parameter into the flight plan of a backwater commercial tugboat. (Not hard to do.)
Someone operating under very similar circumstances to Burke.
When the Nostromo disappeared, the suit covered his tracks, and Weyland-Yutani as a corporation was none the wiser.
OR....If W/Y wanted an Alien so badly, they (apparently) knew where they were. They had 57 years to get one.
But instead, they built a colony there, and don't even take Ripley seriously when she suddenly reappears.
No, "The Company" is actually innocent on a corporate level.

This is the start in movies...u see anyone drinking milk, beware! I would call this sci-fi, not horror. The Thing is definitely both! This,The Thing, and Bladerunner,(Scott also did Bladerunner!😮😮😮) are the 3 most important sci-fi movies ever made. Maybe add Tron, and it's sequel, here. No CGI, all models, special effects, and practical effects! Big walk arounds, built sets ,tools ,furniture, machinery, inside and outside buildings! There is a huge tie-in here. In Prometheus, the prequel to all movies, the alien here on the ship with his chest blown out. These are Engineers. A race of beings who seed life on planets and if they don't like how the life is progressing they seed another life to wipe out the remaining then they destroy each other. Engineers created humans Aliens and supposedly Predators and gave humans the technology for Replicants and Terminators! Also Tyrell Corp,(Bladerunner )Cyberdyne Systems,(Terminator )Weyland Corp(Alien) are all related. Dallas, in a brief view of his resume, u see he worked for Tyrell Corp 😮 that's Bladerunner! Cyberdyne Systems did tech work for Tyrell Corp! And Weyland Corp did industrial and flight operations for Tyrell Corp!! Also Cameron did the sequels for alien and Terminator!!! And of course, Arnold was in predator and Terminator! And Reese, Bill Paxton and the Mexican chica both in terminator 2 and Aliens. Also lance hennrikson is the asst police chief in terminator, and bishop in, Aliens😮😮😮!!!
The old white guy here is Harry Dean Stanton. Been in every movie made since the silent era!😅 This , Dillinger, outsiders, Red Dawn, Godfather 2, Green Mile, and others. Pro tip, the first death scene the director and actor didn't tell the rest of the actors, what was going to happen with the actor, Scott wanted real reactions from the other actors 😮😮😮The real horror is, when ur being taken over, u don't know it!....just like in, The Thing! The dinner chest bust out scene, only the actor and director were fully aware of what was going to happen in this scene! Scott said he wanted realistic reactions from the other actors....he damn sure got them! This scene also parodied in Spaceballs!! A couple of youngsters are boarding the "Nostromo." What will these moderns make of this "old, long, slow-moving, character-centered, no-DFX" movie? The TV and newspaper ads of the time gave us NO idea what kind of movie this was except for the "in space no one can hear you scream." 7:10 The Company is sending the equivalent of a freighter crew to "do science" on an unexplored planet! 13:00 Canny observers saw Ash's "calisthenics" as suspect. 16:39 The Space Jockey, a mystery for decades. 18:45 Second Officer Kane = Zapp Brannigan. 19:47 How's THAT for a jump scare? 20:18 This conversation has become iconic due to recent events. 20:56 The Face Hugger, grossing out audiences for decades; this is the SE version. 22:25 That's why they couldn't "just cut if off him." 25:38 A Props dept. work of ART, made of sea animals. 28:14 Kane's last meal. 29:10 The Xenomorph, scaring audiences for over 40 years.

Building the sets gave room for more creative set decorating. It's why it has such a lived-in look. And such a claustrophobic look. This film really caught everyone off guard, coming after the very hopeful film 'Star Wars'. People weren't ready for the visceral horror in this film. The version you were watching had scenes that weren't in the theatrical release, by the way. Just a couple of scenes and shots, really.

  • @doggiesarus

Good reaction. We tend to forget that John Hurts character (Kane) was infected by only one face hugger and they say there were "thousands" of eggs. That's where the sequel comes from. I am not a fan of recent CGI. Sure it is a time and money saver, but practical effects and real locations are way better. The actors also play against the real thing way better. Movies like 300 were just terrible.

You are to be applauded for being two intelligent people actually watching the damn film, and not constantly blabbering like idiots, which I can assure you is what 95% of folks doing reactions really are! I've only ever found one I could watch as they're all just so bloody maddeningly irritating. But sadly that seems to be what folks want. You both really do approximate what it might be like to actually be watching a film in company when one is alone. Watching it! Not talking so much that you would miss god knows what important details. And yes, you also appreciate the realism that films from back then have compared to the cgi-laden rubbish of today. Finally, yes watch Aliens, but I would humbly suggest that you be careful with the long line of sequels. Aliens is magnificent, albeit very different. But Alien 3 is very problematic, although perhaps just about worth watching, although I could never get past the awful choices it made with pivotal characters. Resurrection is awful. And, sad to say, but the two recent Ridley Scott films are stupid and an insult to his original creation. They may look good, but god are they stupid. I truly wish I had stopped at Aliens, but of course that would never have happened. As to the soon-to-be-released film, well, I'm crossing everything but I think it's a huge long shot. Subbed!

Ridley Scott has said a great many things, but not everything he says should be taken at face-value... Just look at the fuster-cluck that is his "prequel trilogy" for ALIEN. I don't want to spoil anything significant just incase these two plan on visiting those films as well, but I will say this much... According to Mr. Scott, in this universe Jesus was an alien of a particular variety; thus when he gets killed... Yeah, if you know, you know.

Im sorry but i really dont like the directors cut of alien. The edit from Dallas yelling at Ripley to him softly talking to ash is messy, it shows the alien too much with Bret and the coccooned dallas and bret being turned into eggs made no sense esp going into aliens (coccooning yes turning into eggs not ao much). Now watching Aliens i highly recommend the special edition it adds alot of meaning and more emotions

If you like classic SF movies. Check out the 1950's original movies. Alien was influenced by THEM! (1954) too! The THING, When Worlds Collide, and The epic The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951). The War of the Worlds, The Beast from 20.000 Fathoms (1953), GODZILLA, Invasion of the Body Snatchers and Forbidden Planet (1956). Forbidden was a huge influence for the original Star Trek too! The Deadly Mantis and 20 Million Miles to Earth (1957) and The BLOB (1958).

My favorite movie series. I saw it as a teenager in theatres in '79 and watch every youtuber reaction maker. Theses guys are just truck drivers not scientists, hence bad decisions. In the blue ray version you do see the alien hanging on the chains in the landing gear bay. Your editing, you tend to cut out most of the best scenes or chop them up. This I dont like.. Minus points here
Well you cant have gun in a space ship. Anything breaking the hull leads to airbreach. I'd suggest you watch a reaction to this movie by EOM REACTIONS. it was his very first movie reaction and I thought he did a good job.
Now there are other movies in the series. I will say this to you as I do to every other reaction maker, BUT NO ONE LISTENS> MAYBE YOU WILL BE TH E FIRST....Watch the Pre-quel PROMETHEUS before you watch the Sequeal ALIENS...
The series will make so much more sense if you do. BE SURE you get the cut 5 min clip, which is here on youtune, of the deleted conversation between the Engineer and David. Play it after the movie ends. IF YOU DONT DO THIS...WELL I TOLD YOU do.
There are other movies in the series Prometheus, Aliens, Alien Covenant, plus so others which I think are junk.
NO CGI so it was a big real model. The Alien was just a Stan Winston creature design with guy in rubber suit.
Overall on scale of 1 to 5 I give your reaction a 3. Onto PROMETHEUS next!
