Not gonna lie, I screamed "No!" At the reveal of his compleation in the Dominaria reunited teaser trailer. I hope this gets updated with his purification and what ever new story gets released.
My biggest issue on the Ajani in Dominaria United is that it takes away ALL of the character growth leading up to it. He alone wanted to wait and gather allies before fighting Bolas the second time; he lunges alone there? So much love for Ajani; he's my favorite and this just feels... wrong.
I can understand your disappointment. Certain choices seem to have been a bit rush, at times. Either way I have a feeling they will introduce some way of reversing compleation in the not-so-distant future. Whilst this could be disastrous for many reasons, it could also save your favourite cat hero! :P
Honestly, I didn't know much about the lore behind the Planeswalkers. Then, Dominaria United happened, and... Apparently a corrupted version of Ajani (who I thought a paragon of goodness and righteousness) kills Jaya (who's flavor text is some of the funniest in all of MTG). In one set, a ruined version of my favorite Planeswalker, killed my second favorite Planeswalker. Thanks, WotC. 😭

I hate the way they "killed" Ajani. It feels extremely cheap to just keep turning existing walkers into compleated versions (I know it's just two at the moment, but I'm sure more will come). Also, the way they get compleated is super lame. Basically, the reserved "beat the bad guys, and boom, they are your new companions" sort of deal. I would love to see them actually trying to corrupt a planeswalker more gradually. Instead of beating them up, dragging them to new phyrexia, torturing them into submission, how about luring them with knowledge and power? Or use their recent loss of a loved one/near-death experience to convince them of the weakness of the flesh and promise them salvation, perfection, and immortality in the machine? That would be more interesting, no?
I totally agree with you, it does feel a bit cheap. Adding depth to the whole “phyrexianisation process” would make the whole thing much more acceptable to the fans who could, maybe, even understand the motives and empathise with their favourite Walker turning evil! The idea of corrupting them with knowledge and/or taking advantage of a moment of weakness would also make things much more realistic, relatable and overall interesting. I believe that with Ajani they kind of overstepped, though. As someone on reddit suggested, they have two options now: either stick to this new version of Ajani, basically destroying ten years of lore-development of one of the oldest and most beloved characters in MTG history; OR they introduce a way for compleated planeswalkers to be cured, basically making the whole compleation-threat much less scary. Neither sound really great, if you ask me, but at this point we can just wait and see!
@@OctopusLair When I first started playing mtg I was a lifegain/white wennie player. Needless to say, big cat and Gideon used to be two of my favorite and most played Planeswalkers. Now they are all "dead". At least Gideon died a heroic death and truly helped Liliana's redemption arc. But Ajani kinda feel like got killed off to make way for the new poster child of white walker Elspeth. Although I'm sure they will find a way to redeem the compleated walkers but ngl, its probably gonna be super cliche :( RIP my fluffy cat bro
@@rayzhang7591 Yeah, I agree. Gideon's end is so much more epic and enjoyable. I honestly loved the dramatic peak at the end of the War of the Sparks. Liliana's betrayal and Gideon's unexpected sac was just the best way it could end. I hope it's not gonna be as bad/cliche as we expect it to be but yeah, I'd like to see Ajani redeemed as well, somehow!
I was honestly fairly upset with the story decision to have Ajani “compleated”… I have always viewed Ajani as “incorruptible”, with an acutely tuned moral compass. Almost the MtG equivalent or embodiment of the French revolutionary motto of “Liberté, Egalité, Fraternité” (in English Liberty, Equality, Fraternity in case anyone needed clarification). The decision to allow his “compleation” seems like an oversight or something shoehorned in. Yes, I realize Ichor is nearly “completely irresistible”, but certain characters have been shown to possess the ability to resist being corrupted by it (Milera for one). I just think it would have been more in line with the lore if Ajani were maybe not so much totally immune, but unsuited for “compleation” due to his “purity” or whatever sounds better to your ears, but you get the idea. I also realize that Milera reversed Ajani’s ichor affliction (at the cost of her own life 😢), but I am just not a huge fan of that storyline.
Yeah, old Gideon’s on the list. Next up is gonna be Jace coming out in a few days and after that patrons have voted for Elspeth. I’ll make sure to put Gideon in some of the future polls though! ;)

I totally agree. I think they've done a wonderful job with him up to know. I'm still not sure about the compleation step but we'll see how this goes!
