Switch Axe Guide for MHWIB

- I'm back with another guide, this time it's for the Switch Axe in Monster Hunter World Iceborne. Much like all my previous guides/tutorials, I always aim to make it as detailed & complete as possible. As usual, it will cover the basics, as well as some more advanced details, and contains my usual style of teaching. I was originally going to make a guide for a different weapon, but ended up doing it for the Swax. Not a complex weapon by any means, but extremely versatile and fun to play, even though its not my main weapon.
As always I will provide time stamps for easy navigation, as well as for those who can't finish it in 1 go. Thanks for the support and time spent on my content.

Thanks to all those who dropped comments to remind me of some missing/forgotten details. Sometimes even if i already knew this info, I can accidentally miss out on it when writing the script for a 30-50mins long video. I am only human after all and I work on these completely alone, so its easy to miss/forget stuff, I genuinely appreciate those who drop the reminders! I'm going to list down the missing stuff here because I don't want you guys to miss out on the info.
1. The initial thrust for ED & ZSD will come out faster after double slash 1 & 2. This is something you can see in the gameplay footage in this guide, where I always use the thrust after double slashes, but I genuinely forgot to make it a point to explain it. (this is a big mistake because my guides always emphasize on speed & position of attacks, very sorry for forgetting such an important detail)
2. Some have pointed out that you can use LMB right after the 2nd wild swing (glow) to use heavy slam. I am aware of this, but did not add it into my guide because it makes zero difference. Even if you try to heavy slam after 2 wild swings, it will still automatically add a 3rd wild swing for you before the heavy slam itself. So it's 3 wild swings regardless if you add the 3rd swing manually or they add it for you. In fact, new players can easily mess up the timing and get the overhead slash instead of heavy slam if they try to do it right after 2 swings. At 19:34 of the video I explained the wild swing that starts from the left, now THIS ONE is actually the one where you literally get heavy slam after 2 wild swings, without a 3rd wild swing automatically added.
3. Swax mains that are probably better than me in Swax have pointed out that FOCUS can be useful at certain times. With all due respect, I agree with that. But the situations where they can be somewhat useful is very situational and only for niche and specific match ups. Even then, I would still say that using only 1 less attack to amp the sword is still a situational benefit at best, it simply does not provide enough benefit to justify recommending it for general usage. Remember, my guides are made for people to learn and understand the weapon functions, not for specific speedrun setups. By that logic, shaver can also be crucial if you need thorn pod drops to slinger burst KO, or stonethrower for 2nd wallbang setup, tremor resist for punishing rajang etc.
Either way I genuinely appreciate the more experienced players dropping some opinions here, and I am not arguing whether its right or wrong, I'm just giving you my point of view. And things like point no.1 is genuinely my own mistake so I really appreciate you guys reminding me. I do not mind constructive discussions so keep them coming!
You did good my brotha, I learned CB and SA all from your guids, keep doing what you doing.

Your weapon guides are simply the best on youtube.
Thank you.
I have 1000 hours as a main SA and this is by far the best, clear and detail guide I've ever seen. Nice job!
I came into the franchise with the Return to World campaign and have got a bunch of my mates to play too, - one of them is a rare and shiny hunting horn user who's picking it up quickly, and one of the few impressively good hunting horn guides I recommended to him was your solid horn overview / guide. Due to knowing the quality of that video, I was fairly confident that I'd appreciate the quality of this video too as soon as I saw it in my recommends and realized you were the same creator.
I main switch axe and am slowly getting the hang of it, but have been looking for solid videos of this nature for a while, there are some good offerings with the niche details, and some with general ideas, but not many that are comprehensive like this. Thanks for taking the time to give this badass, dynamic, explosive, hybrid abomination the respect it deserves.
Im glad i was able to help out with your HH friend. I also really appreciate that some of you view my guides with such high regard. It really makes all the time spent on making it feel much more worth it. Unfortunately this kind of format tends to take up a lot of time to make so i find it hard to make it for every weapon given wilds will be out next year. Anyhow, thanks a lot for the support
Make the content you wanna make bro, hold yourself to expectations that suit you and what you wanna invest.
I just was happy that you covered both our favourite weapons in such detail. Cheers! @@torpedosoup
You are the only one playing with KB&M commans, thank you for making these awesome guides.
this is THE BEST weapon tutorial i've even seen on youtube, please keep up the good work man, the guide is so detailed and organized !!!
Thank you for making this! Not because I’m a switch axe main, but because these videos are enjoyable and informative. Keep up the good work!
Ty for this awesome comprehensive swaxe guide! Such a well-made video, you can tell how much effort was put into it. Not a swaxe main but I like playing with it from time to time, and I learned a lot of new useful/cool things I wasn't aware of before thanks to his video. Keep it up!!
I love these guides with narration so you can listen while playing. Very thorough and informative thanks 👍👍👍
Just when I'm learning how to play with this weapon, this really cool tutorial appears to give me several useful tips on how to improve my gameplay
Another great guide! Thanks for putting effort into making these. I learned a lot new stuff 😊
Great tutorial! Crystal clear and showing each of the button/mouse presses make it easy to understand 👌
I've used the SWAX for years and it's amazing that this is the best guide video I've ever seen. Thank you for this
Another master class from you! Thank you so much. And just as I was thinking about picking up swag axe for some fun.
Thank you for taking the time to make this guide. Very helpful for new users. Well done 🌟
I got down the mechanics of the charge blade thanks to your video for it, now I gotta say the same thing for this switch axe guide! I appreciate all the time and effort it took to make this video, don't stop making quality videos!
A comprehensive, concise, well-detailed guide. Excellent work!
OH MY! Thank you so much for this! Your guides are the most in-depth i've found on yt (and i've been watching a lot of em lately) and they're really fun to watch. The way you're explaining it is *very* clear and beginner friendly. Thanks to you i didn't have problems with starting mhw with charge blade as my main, even though everyone says its a very complicated weapon. 170 h in and i still come back to that guide haha. ☆AMAZING☆ WORK! I recommend your guides to anyone looking to learn a new weapon. I'm so glad you're making more of theese.
Thank you so much! Im glad these are helpful. I’ve always had plans to make more, its just that its time consuming so I don’t always have the time for it ( im not a fulltime content creator) hahaha
one of the best weapons in video game history.
hahahah dude your videos are so awesome… i would’ve loved this video months ago when I was learning due to the sheer beginner friendly and simpleness your guides have, while being a bit more in depth
subbed, this video is pure gold, is difficult to find guides of this level that include mouse and keyboard inputs, thank for all the time and effort you put into it, I've never used Switch Axe before, and now, after 800hrs a new Swtich Axe user is born, thanks again, and wish you the best!
Incredible work man, i’ll try to learn this weapon thanks to your awesome guide
Every time I look for a new weapon guide on MHW, I'm so happy to see your video appear in my search feed!
I have seen a lot of guides. A lot. These are the best. Thank you.
This is the best Switch Axe guide for Iceborne on CZcams, well done. The ED into Clutch Claw into ZSD is so baller, ha!
This guide has all the answers. I had several questions I could never find the answer to and you helped me with all of them. I am a better hunter thanks to you.
wow. Best weapon guide video I've seen so far! Thank you
Very comprehensive guide. I learned a lot. From zero to hero 😊
super thorough, thanks for the refresher
Please make more of this, straight to the point and more informative of options and armour mods that affect the weapon than other tutorials online. Please do hammer next.
Many thanks in advance
Nice and well put together guide.
I totally forgot clicking right and left mouse at the same time was a thing since i have always used the second side button on my mouse instead lol
the best guides for sure! amazing
Need more content like this, good job🎉
Que guia tan completa. Lo tiene todo, datos certeros, clips detallados y todo comentado con una voz clara y calma. Voy a probar el arma, pero primero me veré el video 3 veces más :v
Hands down the best SA guide. Watch this and that's all you need.
Holy shit, this guide is very complete. I am already a swaxe user and I learned a few tricks, thanks!
Great guide as always
this was so useful, thank you so much
finally and mouse and keyboard guide.. and very detailed too!!!!
Very detailed guide. Very useful 👍
new video? what a wonderful day, thanks for the content.
grascias a este canal me volvi jugador de HH
You guides amazing very detailed I learned charge blade very well thanks to you. Idk do you play every weapon but I hope next guide will be longsword
I look forward to a lance video for MHWIB if you ever get to one. I've started using it recently and I feel so freaking solid using it.
The GOAT is back with another guide !
great guide, you have to cover all the weapons 👍👍
Oh man i wish i could too. But im not on content creation full time. So i struggle to release content that are really detailed like this. If im pumping out videos every week for every weapon I can assure you i will need to sacrifice quality 😂 thanks for the support anyhow
Excellent guide!
Excellent guide 👌
Hidden gem of a video, almost didn't watch cuz of the ai voice but glad I didn't skip
please more content of all weapon, need more guide also we will support you thanks for making these all guidence ❤❤❤❤
In regards to the slow morph animation when your sword gauge depletes: you can also quickly morph attack before the slow animation ensues if you are mid chain and you catch that the gauge has depleted at the right time
Daaamn even after 180hr SA gameplay you helped me with some extra tips but rn im looking for SnS or Hammer in depth guide (specially for arena premade gear). I feel like I poke monsters and I don't master those weapons at all. On the other hand, when I handle SA i do it in a natural way (same from MHP3rd with some fresh combos)
Anyway it's quite difficult to find post-DLC, non controller and updated content so thanks for your time
Wow, that's actually a really interesting weapon.
Thank you! Its helpful!!
Swaxe main here, great video! Even taught me a few things! A few things I would like to add from my experience.
Focus is most definitely viable, and some swaxe players even prefer it over Power Prolonger. (Not me though.) The reason is that power phial takes a very long time to charge otherwise. You can easily skip it when using any other phial, but power phial specifically will take you another single slash 1 -> double slash 1 to charge without focus, if you're using the heavenly flurry combo. With 3 points in focus, you could likely skip the last double sword swings. This may not seem like a lot of time, but in fights with faster, aggressive monsters like Rajang, every bit of amped charge counts. Once you have it, you have it. But until then, you're racing the clock as the charge drains itself. You're not always able to use heavenly flurry on higher threat monsters. Focus also helps keep uptime on sword mode, which is technically the optimal way to use swaxe in MHW.
Do not underestimate claw shot! This is one of the best changes from iceborne for swaxe. The trick is to use nearly the entirety of a normal element discharge, and right before the explosion, use claw shot. You'll find that you've just charged 75% of your amped state from EMPTY. If your timing is right with focus 3, you can charge a power phial from empty using element discharge -> claw shot alone, resulting in ZSD from zero charge! This is by far the fastest way to charge amped state.
Speaking of element discharge, this move is always much faster when used after either of the double slash sword moves.
Heavy slam can be input just as your second wild swing is ending without needed to input a third swing. Too early, and you'll use overhead slash. This is nice if the control timing is tricky for you otherwise.
If you overcommit to wild swings and want ridiculous distance, you can use slinger burst -> fade slash -> evade. With evade extender, this will land you in a different timezone.
Sidesteps may seem unhelpful, but they are useful for dodging roars and wind pressures if you have good timing. Afterwards, you can land a couple greedy hits before bailing. Evade window makes this much easier.
That's all I could think of for now!
Thanks for all the input!
Very useful 👍👍🙏
WTH this vid is something it make me watchin without skip any sec like how wth dude 40min video and im not skip any sec WHAA
Thanks for spending the time to watch it. Much appreciated
Awesome guide as usual dude. Can you please make one for the Hammer?
good guide thank you :D
18:04 you can left click as the axe glows red and it’ll automatically do a third swing followed by heavy slam. Requires a little bit of timing but doesn’t take too much practice.
Probably doesn’t make too much of a difference but you can essentially do it with two clicks and/or avoid doing an extra 4th swing by accident.
Thanks for mentioning. From what i know this only applies to wild swings that start from the left (aka wild swing after rising slash) which i mentioned in the guide about the slam from 2 swings. I actually tried to see if it works with regular wild swing and couldn’t get it to work. Thanks for the correction
@@torpedosoup if you do a regular wild swing and wait until the swing from left>right *just* passes your body and hit circle (right-click) it should work. Takes a lil practice but after a while it’s really easy
Oops I meant left click (triangle)
@@DetectiveDeckard oh wait i think its a misunderstanding. U just mean you can left click after 1 right click right? which is something i'm already aware of. It's just that regardless, your heavy slam will still come out after 3 wild swings. thats actually what i meant in the guide by "3 wild swings onwards". But i should have totally emphasized that you can do it with 2 inputs. The other shortcut I was talking about is not about 2 inputs, is about literally doing heavy slam after 2 swings, which is the one after rising slash.
@@DetectiveDeckard 19:40 in the video is what I mean, like its literally 2 swings into a slam. The one we are talking about is 2 inputs, but the heavy slam will still automatically add a 3rd wild swing. But u have a really good point, that will avoid mistakenly doing a 4th swing.
The Best. Period.
insanely well done, after 200 hours of swax i still learned a thing or two, let me tell you guys i think swax is one of the worst weapons to build a bad habit to input forward on joystick as you attack, learn to leave your thumb off that mofo when you are in position
edit: after mount ZSD you can clutch claw to the monster to avoid the recovery and potentially ZSD again if your meter got filled up while mount ZSDing, which is with focus 3 on power or always on power element phile
Hahaha. Thanks. The direction thing is not as bad as HH imo 😂 that mounting tip is a good one i tend to do it on flying monsters cause of the height. But I actually dont really mount monsters in general so i dont tend to go that deep into mounting tips. Thanks for mentioning tho!
I love this guide! Can we have a decorations build guide for Switch Axe?
I'm not really a fan of doing build guides for any weapon as u can see in all my guides. I only recommend some core skills so you guys can build around them. I'm personally a firm believer of making your own builds to suit your needs by including the recommended skills, rather than copy pasting a full build.
please so some more guides!!
Can you do a build guide for the switch axe? Possibly from base world to endgame ice borne please. Great content btw!
hey there, sry i missed this comment, I don't really make guides about builds sorry, I only share the importance of certain armor skills. I tend to just use my own builds.
nice video
These Guides are really good! SnS next please for the noobs out there
hahah thanks. we'll see how it goes
Hi, can i ask you what type of antialiasing are you using on pc? Because my TAA looks too much blurry.
hey man Im not really sure of my MHW settings, i havent been booting up that game much recently. so sorry!
Really good guide. Liked everything about it. I noticed you have guides for the hunting horn and charge blade too, I'll be watching those for sure.
just caught your charged blade vid tysm for being a keyboard player too lol
hey man i love the video but i wanted to know what combo i need to do to charge the axe mode ??
Its shown in the video. Wild swings 3 times and then attack with left mouse
oh thanks because i tried multiple combo but i was not able to find the good one@@torpedosoup
What a guide holy molly, any pdf version? or google doc?
Hahaha there is no pdf version
makes me feel like im in god eater
tried the switch axe a couple of days ago , i have no idea why i stuck to the charge blade for 170 hours , i did try the dual blades but they are too messy , i tried the hammer but it's not as fun for me , i played the insect glaive for a while but then it got boring , the charge blade clicked and i kept coming back to it , now after trying the switch axe , i feel like i made a mistake sticking to the charge blade for so long
They play so differently so i dont suppose theres any real comparison there besides switching forms.
@@torpedosoup I am not comparing them ,everyone have a playstyle they are comfortable with , i was comfortable with CB , now am more comfortable with SA
Great vids, but you forgot to say that ED lands faster after a Double Slash 1 or Double Slash 2 !
Thanks for mentioning it. Im always just using it in my combat examples as u saw, but forgot to mention this detail in the guide 😂 too many things to remember but i really appreciate u pointing it out
Maybe I missed it but why is power phial better than the others in general?
Power and power element are good, but since power boosts Raw dmg, it works for everything and is generally more useful. MHW elemental match ups are generally not too good, and only specific match ups can find itself somewhat useful. But this is just from the perspective of damage. Element phials do charge up amped state faster, so thats 1 advantage. Other phials are too situational to find themselves useful, and generally get outperformed by power phials. You can still enjoy exhaust phials if you like :)
need 100 x 30 seconds shorts xD
8:15 is it green or am I color blinded?
Gotta be honest, as part of return to world I started over with the intent of learning all weapons. Switch Axe still is incredibly rough consider defensive options. Also, assigning which attack to which opening is somehow too much for my feeble brain even when I do it so easily with my trusty Gunlance.
Ultimately, not the worst weapon for me (damn bows+bowguns) but charge blade is easier IMO.
Am I about to become a SA main?
Great guide as always mate. Do you have a business email we could reach out to for inquiries?
Cheers
Thanks. You can reach me at ericswchia@gmail.com
bro I'm so dumb, I never realized you could morph from sword to axe. I was just sheathing the whole time 😭
Haha now u know. Atleast switch axe has benefits for sheathing so ur fine
Green?
What outfit is that?
lunastra
@@torpedosoup damn that was quick thx man
Oh man I can't wait for Asmongold™ to watch this video and finally learn how to play Monster Hunter World™ properly.
+1
Can't wait for his clips channels to upload a vid of him just watching and get 10x the views of the original vid
gs when
u can go make that one
FIRST
fake news btw
Besto guide 🫰🏻
8:15 is it green or am I color blinded?
hahah ur right its actually more blue-ish than green, close to teal. I just kinda combined them because when its completely amped it becomes green
@@torpedosoup actually asked someone about it lmao, tysm for the guide man. I just started playing mhwi for 2 weeks now and I want a new weapon to try and chose SA, I feel like it's not a beginner friendly weapon tho?
@@timmydaichi i think all weapons are easy to learn, but require a deeper understanding to master. The guide does try to cover the details but if we put it in simpler terms just to learn the basics, u just attack with your sword to charge it up and zsd when u can. Morph around the 2 modes when you combo to manage your gauge. Thats about it
