    • @karaokekingskingdom

      MrDeathmaster131 well, if we go buy last month's sales, sensation comics featuring wonder woman sold 11k units out of a total comic sales of...6.7 million in march (going by the top 300 titles alone). You can generally see that's 1.6% of sales, 98.4% of comic buyers skipped it, I think it's a fair estimate to extrapolate the phenomenon and suggest 90% of people here have never bought one.
      This isn't even a gender thing, princess leia was the highest selling title last month, selling nearly 350k units over two comics.
      in comparison to other heroes of her stature, she just doesn't bring home the bacon. I think the comment is.....fair.

    • @Stanlos
      @Stanlos Před 9 lety +1

      Sean Maguire Yes, but there were different circumstances. In WW#175 Circe transforms Superman into one of her bestiamorphs by making him a hybrid of Doomsday and regular kryptonians. She then added an element to the spell where Supes would see WW as the source of agony and the only means to quell it being to kill her. Off he goes to kill her. Wonder Woman refused to kill Supes and tried most of the match to reason with him (which is problematic if she knows who Circe is and how her spells work). In the end, she used her lasso to break the spell. In SACRIFICE, Max Lord had through years of conditioning and effort completely subjugated Supes using a combination of methods in addition to his own psionic power to dominate or push minds to do his bidding. The range of the power was such that even at the Sun (millions of light years away) the control held.

    I understand people's dislike for new 52 WW, however I can't really fault her character in the solo series. while she comes off a bit more headstrong especially in conflict the compassion and mercy etc I feel is still there. When people say she's completely different its most likely the Jl and s/Ww charcter who is significantly different. This WW is just a brash young take of the same character

    • @Vindicator73
      @Vindicator73 Před 9 lety

      SuperLemurboy Another thing that pissed me off is Wonder Woman getting in the way of other heroes....she is soo arrogant. They wanted to fight a destructive creature themselves but end up fighting her instead.....its so retarded. I don't see soldiers on the battlefield getting in each other way and going at opposing armies, they know what they signed up for and if injuiry or death happen to a follow soldier its all apart of the business, casaulties of war. Just another reason why comics can not be taken seriously.

      @SuperLemurboy Před 9 lety

      Well you can't generalise the whole medium based off one comic, especially when you have greats like v for vendetta and a personal favourite of mine watchmen. It's like taking a bad film and saying all films can't be taken seriously. It's true though new 52 (justice league) Wonder Woman is a pretty arrogant sword toting barbarian, however azzarello writes her well. It's Weird johns characterisation can be so on point, such as his aquaman run but can falter with others

    Why are none of these "epic" moments from the man that created Wonder Woman? At least one should be from Marston's run. Either saving Baroness von Gunther's daughter to reforming her to a hero, trying to reform Priscilla Rich, Wonder Woman being elected president, SOMETHING. Instead.. we ignore Marston's role and that he created Wonder Woman.. to highlight a collection of mostly violent actions that Marston would abhor. In fact, there's not a single mention of Pre-Crisis Wonder Woman at all or any of her epic feats. And 2 out of the 10 are about New 52 Xena/Red Sonja incarnation of Wonder Woman. Nothing from Azzarello's run is epic or deserves to be on this list. It's way too new and doesn't define the character at all as.. after his 3 year run, we still know next to nothing about the character.
    Also, really don't think many of these moments are all that.. epic or really any different than Batman, Superman, Green Lantern, Power Girl, Batgirl, ect would do. How does this show that Wonder Woman is great? It doesn't really since.. all these stories could literally be told with any hero.. which just shows how Wonder Woman is treated by DC. Just.. generic Superman as a girl, instead of Ambassador to Man's world and peaceful heroine that reforms her villains (of course, she hasn't reformed anyone since Crisis on Infinite Earths either).

      *****
      Umm Marston's run is not remotely misandrist. Steve is often shown as being equal to Diana and in fact, Diana often openly supports him getting a promotion and credit for work she mostly did (though he did help). He often wants to give the credit to Wonder Woman, but she foists the credit onto him. Diana runs into several helpful and good men and often states that men are good (heck, she LOVES Steve Trevor with all her heart). She just believes that men are better when they accept the superiority of women, which is pounded in a few times, instead of subjugating women. Marston was very much about female power to the point where he did think women were superior to men and he admits to putting that in the comic, but.. he also highlights that men are capable and strong as well.
      As for her character, she has vastly more than Azzarello's version has shown. She shows compassion, love, courage. She shows restraint from violence at several times and she's shown as having a complex dual life as Wonder Woman and Diana Prince. She actually has friends, both as Diana Prince and Wonder Woman (and yes, they're often the same people, but still), which is more than most writers ever give her.
      I just don't see how you can remotely say that Diana is anything like Superman. She helps her enemies, not pummels them. She restrains them and often helps people out that she has really nothing to do with. Superman doesn't especially not at this time. In fact, Diana was created in part as a counter to Superman who was extremely violent at this time, threatening to throw people off buildings or break them in half if they didn't do what he wanted.

    • @JanArrah
      @JanArrah Před 9 lety +1

      I don't find Marston's run creepy at all. It's not about subjugating anyone. It's about the realization that women are equal to/superior to men, period. Men are not subservient to women except in love.. and a woman is subservient to her man in love. Wonder Woman doesn't become emperor of a planet, she is ELECTED President. She is chosen by the people. In fact, Queen Clea, who is a male hating queen from a planet that does similar to Azzarello's Amazons, is an early enemy of Diana. Clea kidnaps men and forces them to marry women against their will. She uses them as slaves. Diana rejects that as wrong.
      As for Azzarello's run, being in a war shouldn't change Wonder Woman. She fought in World War II, she's fought War/Mars/Ares countless times. What makes her different is that she DOESN"T succumb to the ruthlessness. As for her Amazon brothers, that whole line is just dumb and ultimately adds nothing to the series. It just reinforces the stereotype that women and the Amazons are evil and hate men. And while Diana is forced to confront things, she's faced them before. Once again, this is nothing new for the character as a whole and she's always managed to come out without being cold, distant or brutal. She's always managed before to find a BETTER way, not the same way that was already tried and ultimately Diana has to give up on the First Born (who is one of the most underdeveloped villains of all time) and just.. do more of the same and hope it turns out better next time. It's such a cop out. She should be able to teach him to be better. Not just.. throw him back into a pit and go, "Well.. I hope he learns better in the future!"
      As for the Man amazons and the "stagnant" Amazon society. It's only stagnant because Azzarello made it that way. He made it inflexible and completely and utterly incapable of adapting or changing. He made it filled with hatred and made them vile, disgusting, and unlikeable. He made the Amazons into everything repulsive and abhorrent to force them to change because.. there is ultimately NO WAY a society of women could be peaceful and adapt to changes. There's no WAY a society of women could learn new things and grow their minds.. no, they just devolve into barbarian warrior women who can't even make weapons themselves.
      As for the fall out of her decision, it's just going to ultimately re-enforce negative stereotypes on the Amazons and women. There is nothing positive that comes out of this whole thing and it just adds a really unnecessary, messy and vile past for the Amazons. It makes them retched creatures that need to be destroyed and ultimately it makes you wonder again how the hell Diana came out of this pit of degradation and since nobody has or will tell us. I long for the day we reboot this mess and go back to something that isn't so anti-women, isn't so filled with hatred towards Diana's people and returns to Wonder Woman's roots.

      Jan Arrah Marston philosophy was that a woman's role was to subjugate men through love and compassion. If anything he had a very negative outlook on men. As for Azzarello's run making the Amazon's look like they hate men I didn't get that impression. If anything he made them look flawed and human. This peaceful society only achieves peace through some messed up practices. The Amazon society is a misandrist society they look down on men for just being men and praise women for just being women. But they have good qualities too and that is what Wonder Woman represents. I loved reading Azzarello's Wonder Woman because he made her human. Also Cliff Chiang's art for Wonder Woman awesome.

      You seem to understand Wonder Woman a lot better than the people who made the video or some of the people commenting. If someone doesn't like the way Marston had Wonder Woman and prefers a character more like Xena, fine. I watched Xena from the beginning. They're two different characters, though, and it's the height of absurdity for some people to claim that they understand what Wonder Woman should be more than the man who created Wonder Woman did.
      One of her defining moments was when she uses the lasso on herself to makes sure she never uses her influence over Paula for selfish reasons, but that side of Wonder Woman gets pushed to the background sometimes. I can imagine a good story coming out of her killing Max Lord, that she was backed into a corner and forced to do something that contradicted everything she believed, but too many people took that story to mean that WW is willing to kill her enemies if she has to, even though she was explicitly created to say that hitting the bad guys until they surrender isn't the only way. She reforms Priscilla Rich, at least temporarily, by getting her to dance in front of other people. I can't picture Batman or Green Lantern doing that. Maybe Superman.
      Marston had his flaws-many of his ethnic characters would be considered racist today, and for good reason-but there's a strong case to be made for his Wonder Woman being one of the best comics of the Golden Age.

      Yeah... it's really important we get the least women friendly, most misogynistic, most violent version of Wonder Woman in her history on the film. Who wants a family friendly, female friendly character? Those NEVER sell or do well at all.. which explains Frozen and Hunger Games. NOBODY wants a powerful female character that is actually good on her own.. they want a dumbed down, aggressive psycho that murders her mentor for no real reason as the lead of a movie. This is going to be REALLY go over well with people and it'll be such a smash hit.. women everywhere have been dying to see this cause.. they've totally never seen it before (except ya know.. in the thousands of other movies where it's done and failed).
      As for the idea there are different versions, yeah there are different versions of Superman and Batman, but.. they all respect the core concept. New 52 Wonder Woman doesn't remotely care about who she was before and Azzarello openly admits that he wasn't a fan of her (and really still isn't which is why he's barely written her or explored her in any way). New 52 Wonder Woman is like if they wrote Superman where he murdered Pa Kent and ran around with an axe, slaughtering villains and just being regularly angry. Or Batman using a gun, murdering Alfred, and murdering bad guys regularly.. All while of course dating a female character where they are designed solely to enhance that character and make themselves look bad.

      Vindicator73 Sorry, Vindicator but no. SACRIFICE is not the first time that the two characters have faced off. Someone of Wonder Woman's power level could end Supes as he himself has expressly stated before (he did so for example when facing a WW villain in his own SUPERMAN VS WONDER WOMAN treasury sized story). Wonder Woman is the only classic character that was literally conceived to be 'invincible yet human' and to wield 'a dominant force'. Add to that an Amazon's adeptness with combat and virtually any match she is in is 50/50 at a minimum including Supes.
