EXPLANATION OF RULES HERE
Banned actions:
- When slidekicking off a ledge, the player can input A and effectively jump middair. This only barely deviates from a standard jump, and is banned.
- When the player is knocked airborne after taking damage, it is also possible to jump out of the hitstun.
- Releasing a pole early by pressing A puts the player in a jump-like state.
- Triangle jumps are parallel jumps between walls and are banned by technicality, for reasons explained in the video.
- In power formation, when the power character is unable to move (i.e. after a combo), but the speed character can, it is possible to input a jump where only the speed/flying characters will jump, and the player character will remain stationary. This is banned because it circumvents the Triangle Jump technicality, as well as resets the ability to use Tornado (more info in the video). However, having the power or flying followers jump is okay, as no advantages exist for doing so.
- Initiating flight in the flight formation.
Permitted actions that are similar to jumps:
- Pressing A to release a lift ring/swinging vine. While the former does put the player in a jump-like state, it does not reset tornado or triangle jump (again, explained in video), and the jump-state offers no meaningful advantages. I personally just thought it would be lame to keep getting softlocked on chinup bars with no way to let go.
- Rail switching is also allowed, though I did scrutinize this one a lot. The reason for allowing it is that only sideways momentum is gained, and rail-switching onto nothing puts the player in freefall, not a jump-state. No actions can be inputted while in freefall. However, holding neutral on the control stick to jump off a railing is the same as a standard jump, and as such is not allowed.
All gameplay was recorded on the Dolphin Gamecube emulator. Save states were used to gather most of the footage.

29:13 Just for your future reference, you're supposed to hold B on rails to go faster. Mashing it does accelerate you faster if you're going slow, but when you're as fast as mashing allows, just hold. It makes that final laser a complete non-issue.

You can actually go way faster when going downhill on rails of you hold the action button instead of repeatedly pressing it, so the final rail segment in Final Fortress is actually easier than you might have expected
Yup, mashing the action button is only good for accelerating up to a certain point, to go over your top speed, just hold it down while going down hill.
Yeah, it seems intended for this section as the laser shoots just above your head as you go down the sloped part for cool cinematic effect
Here’s how to solve the bobsled dilemma. The characters clearly state that if Tails falls off, then the BOBSLED won’t be able to jump. You’re playing the challenge as Sonic, Tails and Knuckles, so it doesn’t matter what the bobsled does.
Philosophical and long-winded take inbound:
The title of the video is "can YOU beat sonic heroes without jumping." You, as the player, must beat sonic heroes without jumping. Anything you can directly control or play as counts as a proxy for you as the player. You are sonic, tails, and knuckles, but you are also the bobsled. Their success in this challenge is determined by you, so it's really not them playing the challenge metaphorically. You control the bobsled, and it's not jumping unless you press the button telling it to. if you must jump with it to pass the segment, the challenge is metaphorically over.
Even without the bobsled disqualifying you, if you take a literal approach, in order to break the glass of world 5 I believe (casino), knuckles must be level 1+ to do a combo attack to break the glass . The uploader of this video said verbatim from 10:00 - 10:15 that "when knuckles is level 1 or higher he does a third hit in his combo where he JUMPS a tiny bit and slams down", which was the strategy used to pass this segment. If you apply your theory of keeping the trio you play as from jumping, then knuckles, who you play as, is jumping. While not a jump triggered by clicking the jump button, a jump is still a jump done willfully by you as knuckles, in the literal sense, failing the challenge
Tl;DR: The challenge is if YOU as the player can beat the game w/o jumping. Anything you control is the player and if you need to jump to proceed in any way, you fail.

@@mughyie8818 Well if we're picking specific philosophical arguments, I could argue that I can beat every game in existence without jumping. If the specific challenge is whether or not the PLAYER can complete the game without jumping, I can stay firmly on the couch for the entire game and I personally won't jump a single time. It specifically says whether or not YOU can do it, and by definition you are not Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, or a bobsled - you are a person holding a controller.
@Psepha Exactly lol. It really depends on how literal or metaphorical (or however along the spectrum) you wanna go. I can't argue with that cuz literally you're right! But metaphorically you're not at the same time. (At least in my opinion) It all depends on semantics and interpretation of vague words and concepts such as who is you, what counts as the player, and what counts as a jump. Interesting huh? This spectrum of interpretation and thinking explains a lot on how people think justify the challenge and its outcome here in the comments. We are all wrong and right, all at the same time, and it all depends on who you ask. Spooky huh?

Tornado becomes available after jumping. Tornado did not become available after bobsled jumping (17:06). Ergo, bobsled jumping is not jumping.

Just have a question, at the end of final fortress couldnt you just hold circle to keep the momentum and skip the big laser ? This has got to be my favorite game challenge video on youtube I've seen so far, quite literally breaking the game six ways from sunday and not giving up and either ending the run or considering it flawed in the first five minutes. Honestly, I faintly remember abusing at least a few of these tricks to my advantage when I was playing this game as a kid. I wasn't dumb, but game logic made little sense to me back then, so when I didn't feel like asking for help like the child I was, I figured out some workarounds.

Regarding the bobsled dilemma, I would say it's not so much jumping, as it is Tails dead lifting it. A Bobsled is unable to physically jump, and Tails is more pulling it than actually jumping. He's also not flying either so that's both rules still in the clear

ima be real, i've played this game through like 6 times and i did not know about the light speed attack. it's like how i did not know you could strafe in shadow the hedgehog because i stopped walking through the tutorials after the first level.
Never expected to see a challenge on this game. Sonic Heroes, Adventure and Riders are games I'll love forever no matter how janky and bad they are
Funny how so many hate the pinball tables, and yet I like them...
Then again, I realized that using the flight character on the tables gives the best mix of speed and control which makes it very reasonable. Might be a PS2 only thing (yes I played on that), but it's really consistent.
