- After a long roadtrip to Northern Maine, we put in on Johnson Pond to start our journey down the Allagash Wilderness Waterway. Allagash Stream proves to be our first challenge as water levels in late September make for a lot of lining during our first several miles.

There's something about the back woods and waters of Maine - not certain what it is, but it's like nothing else on earth. It is a mysterious and beckoning quality that can only be found if we're open and welcoming to it. What a place... 🥾

Thank you for the memories. Fort Kent is my hometown. I have been just about everywhere you were on this trip. I recognized a few places not mentioned in your narrative. My most memorable trips were in the winter by snowmobile. We then stayed at the Maine Game Warden camp on Big Eagle.

Wow... 35 hour drive! This is making me think my fears of driving from Maryland to Woodland Caribou for backcountry canoeing are a bit unfounded!
Haha yea it was definitely a trek… I’ll be honest, it sounded a lot better of an idea on the front end 😂 I’m a big road tripper, but after that 35hr drive one way, we decided that was maybe a little too much for future trips lol. Worth it though!

I didn’t publish our route, but happy to share it! Here’s what we did. The hardest part was finding Johnson Pond in the dark haha, but here’s the GPS coordinates for where we started: 46.315282, -69.580463. From there we paddled through Allagash Stream into Allagash Lake, continued east into the rest of Allagash Stream and camped at Little Allagash Falls on Little Round Pond. Paddled to Eagle Lake and camped there on Farm Island. Paddled north to Churchill Lake and camped there at the Jaws Campsite just above Churchill Dam. Ran the Chase Rapids below the dam and camped where the river empties into Umsaskis Lake. Then paddled to Round Pond and camped there. Then paddled to Allagash Falls and camped there. After the Allagash merged with the St John River, we just picked a good gravel bar to camp for the last night and then took out at the Fort Kent boat ramp at Riverside Park.

It’s a pleasure! Love getting to share experiences and exchange stories with others who enjoy the outdoors like us. Good question! We did actually have life jackets. Just didn’t wear them all the time. They were sitting right at our feet if we weren’t wearing them. We usually threw them on before going through rapids or big open water. Yikes! That’s no joke! Hey! Thanks for the sub and I’m glad you’re enjoying the videos! No all good, this is my good friend Chase that I grew up with. You’ll probably see him in several of the videos. I have a few people who come with me on these trips but he’s normally on the big ones.

Yes! Im glad you caught it. But I didn’t see it till I was editing the video! I was pretty surprised. I thought it was such a cool shot!

It’s a paddling term for the starting point where you put the boat in the water.
Why start at Johnson pond?
Couple of reasons. One, we really liked the remoteness that Johnson Pond starts you off on. It fully immersed us from the first paddle stroke. Also, it allowed us to paddle most of Allagash Stream which was a fun and unique part of the whole trip. We also got to explore the ice caves on Allagash Lake. We felt starting at Johnson Pond gave us quite a bit of diversity right at the start. And I’m glad we did because those first couple of days were some of our favorite! Out alternative and backup plan was to put-in at the south end of Chamberlain Lake if the rangers thought Allagash Stream was too low. We ended up still lining a lot, but it was totally worth it in our minds.
Where are you from? Like where do you live and where are you from?
I currently live in Oklahoma, but I grew up all over the place. So a lot of my regular trips are around here in Arkansas or New Mexico. But I have family in Minnesota so I get up there multiple times a year. I usually try to get further out for a trip at least once a year.

Oh trust me, we definitely had our PFDs. We wore them a lot, just took them on and off.
Enjoyed the video on the Allagash and Boundary Waters. Did BW some years ago. Spectacular! I only mad the PFD comment because here in Clorado, we see people die every year because they have them but dont wear them. There are folks that see you vids and think if you dont wear them, they dont have to. Maybe a comment in your next vid would help.
Lived in Maine 14 years. Loved to visit Ft Kent when I was at Loring FB in the 70's.

So these 10 part series gotta stop. Edit the trip into a 1.5hr movie. Please. Don't stop short videos youtubers. But as a whole, I'm don't want to wait 2.5 months to watch a series of videos. You feel where I'm coming from.
I get ya. But what has inspired me a lot over the years are some guys I’ve gotten into watching who do long multi-part episodes. I really enjoy having something to come back to every week and watch. I know that’s not everyone’s cup of tea, so I do a bit of both. If you want the whole story, jump to The Allagash Full Documentary. Eagle lake up there is really called Big Eagle Lake and the regular Eagle lake is located in Eagle Lake township in Northern Maine off Rt. 11, 16ish miles north of Ashland Maine
Interesting. Good to know! That’s funny the maps (at least all the ones we had) didn’t designate that.
@@Beyond_The_Treeline you’re right and that’s what the map shows but I used to fish big eagle, round pond and Churchill a few times every summer. I grew up in northern Maine and town called Ashland.

@@Beyond_The_Treeline oh I moved to Bangor Maine in 1989 bought a house in Orrington Maine 6 miles out of Bangor Brewer and I’m still here ha ha ha I married a wonderful beautiful woman back in 1991 from Bangor. We went on to have two beautiful sons and we’reboth close to retirement now.
