    Hurray! I’m really happy to see the start of Linux Reaper videos. I have been incredibly frustrated with Windows and don’t have the budget to continually throw money at Apple so two years ago I started switching to Linux. Mint has been good to me and now it is very rare to boot to Windows. I was so happy to find Reaper for Linux and it works so reliably. There are still some pretty major challenges for full music production, but I’m getting there. At the moment, I mostly use the stock plugins because more than that has been a nightmare. Thanks to Kenny G., I’m learning to utilize the ugly stock plugins. Someday I’ll learn how to utilize git scripts, but not much luck so far on that. I don’t really get much for functional midi instruments in Linux, but I’m learning to record some of my own samples. Definitely looking forward to more Linux Reaper videos. 🤘🏻

      Thanks for watching. Solus is pretty good the OS is made to be easy so the user can get on working on whatever they enjoy. Solus also keeps all of the open source plugins available for Linux in the app center as a 1 click download. I don't recommend Solus if you have an Nvidia GPU and don't understand how to install Nvidia drivers from the terminal but if you have an AMD or Intel iGPU then you would enjoy Solus for music production. Also Ubuntu studio is great for anyone who wants to use the Ubuntu ecosystem. Kenny is great it still blows my mind he is the mastermind engineer of Marcy's Pllayground's hit Sex & Candy, which was a song I could not escape back in the mid 90s!

      @@joesalyers thank you. I will do some research. Sadly I am running nvidia and that seems to also be an issue with Kdenlive. So far my research and attempts at better drivers have left me far worse than the default. The steep learning curve to properly function in Linux has been daunting and time consuming, but I am very happy with the rewards to date.

      @@jamescranefinecarpentry7146 using Nvidia GPUs then the Ubuntu family or Linux mint which is based on Ubuntu is the best distro for those GPUs

      @@joesalyers I’ve got a separate drive where I have been experimenting with Ubuntu Studio and others and so far the most functional overall for me has been Mint. I think that will expand as I learn Linux, but for now, it has been keeping me far more happy than Microsoft or Apple.

      Congrasts! Ubuntu MATE edition is my recommended Linux above ALL versions and other Linux's except Linux Mint MATE which is close to or on Par with Ubuntu MATE.

    Thanx for this! I have an old 2011 17" MacBook Pro with 16 gb of RAM that I will be installing either Pop OS or Ubuntu Studio on so that I can use Reaper for mixing. I am running Logic and Reaper on a 2021 iMac but I need a portable for when I am away from home. Currently my MacBook Pro (running Catalina) has become very sluggish and mixing in Logic or Reaper is just not working out to well and I am hoping that using Pop or Ubuntu Studio will lighten the resource load.

    This video was excellent. Would you mind showing please how to make Reaper work with Windows VSTs using Yabridge and also how to set up Reaper with Jack or Pipewire for low latency?

    • @joesalyers
      @joesalyers  Před 2 lety

      I'm sorry I don't use windows vst plugins on Linux, so I wouldn't be able to help with that. You can use Reaper with Jack but it is better to just select your audio interface in the Reaper preferences as the audio device and use that. Thanks for watching.

    Wow nice tutorial. Thank you. Can you show us how to install some free plugins? Piano will be great-. Thanks

      @joesalyers  Před 2 lety

      I can but it will be different for each linux distro, the best option would be to find out what plugins are available for your distro. On Solus all of the open source plugins for Linux are in the Solus App Center and it just takes one click. Thanks for watching.

    Pure debian is garbage. Reaper for me works on linux mint but not debian, so that must be the 1% where it doesnt work

    • @joesalyers
      @joesalyers  Před rokem

      Sometimes Debian can be dependency H3LL maybe consider Ubuntu Studio since it has all of the components you need for audio and video work built right in with the same debian base. Thanks for watching!!
