    They were visionaries of sound. In the ancient city of Pompeii, this was a performance not to be forgot. Hope you also do Echoes live at Gdansk, Poland from 2006; before Rick Wright passed in 2008. Very moving. David Gilmour (lead guitar, lead vocals) and Rick Wright's (keyboards/synths, vocals) harmonies are beautiful. David said that after this, he wouldn't perform Echoes anymore because of Rick's absence; that the song was a musical conversation between the two.

    • @OriginalPuro
      @OriginalPuro Před 6 měsíci

      "not to react to it, but to just enjoy it."
      To enjoy is to react..
      To react to new information is instinctual, it's survival. Squirrels do it, birds do it, humans do it. New info = potential threat = reaction. When you scare someone, that's what happens, the brain goes into survival and screams DANGER.
      If you see someone walking towards you, you react to it in some way, either by continuing to walking, stopping, moving out of the way, walking past them and so on.
      When people say they're "reactors" I think nuclear reactors, because you can't "be" a reacting person, everyone is a reacting person from birth. We react to cold, we react to lack of love(kids can actually die from not being touched and "loved" at an early stage), we react to being poor, being rich, waking up, going to sleep, food, water, everything.

    What a delight it is to see you guys reacting to this amazing music. I was a Floyd fan in 1967 when their first album came out. I can actually tell you exactly where I was when I bought each album in the 60s. When they announced that they had filmed a movie of them performing in the Roman amphitheatre in Pompeii I was stoked. They released it into the movie theatres in early 1972 and I remember taking the bus to go and see it. Can you imagine what this was like to experience this in a small movie theatre back in 1972? The movie opened with Echoes Part 1 and closed with part 2. In between they included more songs and also footage of them recording Dark Side of the Moon in the studio. I was so pumped that I couldn't wait for them to come to town, which they did a few weeks later. I sat about fifteen rows back on the floor and watched them perform all of Dark Side of the Moon. It wasn't released until about a year later, so none of us had a clue what we were hearing for an hour. The sound was quadraphonic and was all around the entire hall. The ended with Echoes and the whole audience was mesmerized. Changed my life. I went to that Roman Amphitheatre about 45 years later and stood on the magical spot. Watch them do Echoes for the very last time here. czcams.com/video/zrProK5R7ms/video.html Thanks guys.

  • @ripro83
    @ripro83 Před rokem +4

    I think you said it best: "Pink Floyd figured it out." Yep. I had that realization when I first saw the Echoes film and really listened to Dark Side of the Moon in my early 20s. That was a hell of a realization because it taught me that these guys were operating on an entirely different level from their peers. That's why Dark Side is considered the perfect album. It sort of has it all: the songs, the concept, the album art, the impeccable production and sound, the music that is at once deep but pop, yet it's all held together with great pocket grooves, rhythms, and songs. Underlying this band are 4 guys who are incredibly smart. Hell, they met at an architectural school. The original guitarist before Syd and Dave dropped out to become an architect. I think what they also really figured out by this time period - I think they recorded this in 1971 - was they had fully figured out and mastered how to fully maximize the use of technology, the studio as another instrument, and their ability to blend the technical production with their artistic concepts. That was when they went from a really good band to one of the greatest bands of all time.

  • @Newfie-zc7ug
    @Newfie-zc7ug Před rokem +9

    I know they came close to perfection with Dark Side but this stuff is what drew me to them in the first place (with a little pushing from one of my older brothers) The rest is history for me.

    The "One of these Days" from the Live at Pompeii gig is great too. It's a go-to for me as a pick up. It's odd because it only shows Nick Mason the drummer; that wasn't by design. Somehow the other footage of the band was lost so the video is done centred on him and... it's great. 🤩

    That volcano they are walking down, is Mt Vesuvius, which erupted in the 79 AD and buried Pompeii under 20 feet of ash. The amphitheater they are playing in is part of the remains of Pompeii. The director of the movie did a great job showing images of what is left of Pompeii while David is playing his oh so haunting guitar licks, one can't help but think it is some form communication with the spirits that died so horribly there, so long ago, like distant echoes....And this movie used to play for years at a repertory theatre, so $2 Cdn admission. Every Friday, always packed. I bought the movie on dvd, in fact, it was the first dvd movie I bought for my then brand new dvd player.
    Oh, by the way, the movie was not really a documentary. At that time a lot of groups were releasing movies of live shows, with some behind the scenes footage added in as well. So, being Pink Floyd, they released a 'live' show without an audience!! And if you ever want to actually watch how they made some of those amazing sounds, watch the 'Saucerful of Secrets' from this same movie, live at Pompeii. (Filmed 1971, released 1972, then had added footage later.)
    Actually, the Meddle album (from which the song Echoes is from), came out in 1971. The album Obscured by Clouds came out in 1972. And then all their best known albums, starting with Dark Side Of The Moon in 1973. So, busy 3 years considering they not only put out 3 albums, but managed to film a movie in between there somewhere as well.

  • @peterelbee

    Thanks for your reaction, Echoes, like most of the Pink Floyd song could only be produced with an Indepth knowledge of music. It is also interesting how the band members play as a group. None tries to outshine the other. They all get a chance to show off thier talent. Some say it is a conversation between the drums and guitar. I see it as a concert in for the spirits of the 20,000 people that died when Mount Vesuvius erupted in 74 AD. I would say this is one of the most well produced music videos I've ever watched. Listening to it, you wouldn't think it was done by drugged out people in the mid to late 20s.

    Love that you both enjoy Floyd. This is side 2 of the Album Meddle, side 1 is just as good but is a complete mix of music. This is what I consider them coming together and getting ready to do The Dark Side of the Moon album. They experimented a lot with many odd sounds over 2 albums Umma Gumma and this one Meddle. I think you may want to take a listen to some Alan Parsons Project. Alan was the engineer on DSOTM and has said his album Tales of Mystery and Imagination was a follow up to Floyd's DSOTM album. Another one you may want to take a listen too is David Gilmour's self titled solo album that came out (1978) a year before The Wall. You might also be interested in the fact that "Comfortably Numb" was a piece of music that was a left over from Gilmour's solo album, he had the music down but hadn't written anything for it yet. When they needed a filler song for The Wall David brought the music in and Waters came up with the lyrics for it. Roger's used a personal experience of being ill before a show and getting a shot before going on stage to do a show.

    The entire “concert”/“movie” is well worth a watch. There’s even a dog solo.

    FYI, the distinctive Nick Mason sound is partially due to his Paiste 2002 22" ride.
    I managed to find a 1974 one in mint condition for our Floyd tribute band, and it makes such a difference.

    16 years old (maybe 1976) me and a buddy heard this movie was playing in Oakbrook, Il. so we gathered our couple dollars and went to the bus stop. The buses didn't take paper money back then so the bus driver waited for us to go get change at the laundromat across the street. we climbed back on the bus. About halfway there we each did a hit of purple microdot. We got there and didn't see it listed on the board and the lady in the ticket booth told us it was playing at OAK PARK. which is 5 miles North of where we were originally. We ran back to the bus and it was the same driver, once again we didn't have change but, recognizing us he told us to get on, half way back the microdot kicked in and we bust out laughing for no reason ( well, the acid was the reason) but that bus driver had to be thinking "Maybe I should drop these two off at the looney bin". We finally got to Oak Park and they were playing the 3 stooges before the 2nd Floyd showing, so you know we had a good time.

    No, no way and I would never insult these great musicians. They are NOT hip pop, not even close. ;) Pure Rock'n'Roll. :)

    You guys should watch "Set The Controls For The Heart of The Sun " from the film or just check out the whole movie. There is footage of them recording songs on Dark Side of the Moon and band interviews interspersed with the Pompeii performance. Pink Floyd has three vocalists: bassist Roger Waters, keyboardist Richard Wright and guitarist David Gilmour.

    This is the song that defined the Pink Floyd sound we hear later in their discography. It’s just splendid how Richard Wright is such a genius with setting that perfect ambient atmosphere.

    Love your reactions, guys! Best out there. If you want to see the drummer truly go crazy, watch One Of These Days from this same concert. You'll love it. At one point, he loses a stick and picks up another without missing a beat.
