  • Fitz Frames is out to “solve” kids eyewear. The problems? The ordering process for glasses is too long and complicated. Options are limited. Frames don’t always fit. Complete pairs are too expensive. And kids outgrow them too quickly.
The California-based company is establishing a better model, one where parents and kids can order better glasses in an easier way. An augmented reality iPhone app makes it possible to try on styles and colors virtually, and then order frames of exactly the right size. Fitz Frames 3D prints each pair to order at its Youngstown, Ohio, facility. More in this episode.

You two are so good. I enjoy your videos very much. Always well done and so informative about the design details. Though I never would have imagined a fun entertaining show about this subject 😂 So I’m off to order a pair of those glasses, and then finish watching all your other videos. Thank you for all the hard work you put into making them.

"...I'm not aware that glasses have a problem...." - re-thinking the business model through the prism of Industry 4.0 tools led to a new workflow. I enjoyed this because it dissected the use case through several layers: software, mobile phone camera sensors, an AR model and then manufacture an object on demand. It looks easy now, but a lot of tools have to work together. Can the glasses be recycled? Is that on the Fitz Frames roadmap?

Hi Matt, we reached out to Fitz Frames and received the following response regarding your question.
"We are unable to melt down the glasses to "truly" recycle them but have recyclable programs we are looking at for the future. One of the things we are looking at is offering a discount for families who return older glasses (as a child's face will change every 6 months) and working with our philanthropic partner, Vision To Learn, to donate glasses when we receive older ones."

My ears are lopsided and nosebridge flat so I've always struggled with finding frames that work. I got my fitzframes a few days ago and now I no longer push up my glasses every few minutes!
