This song was for the movie “The Next Best Thing” which starred Madonna and Rupert Everett, the gentleman in the video with M. There’s a scene in the film that featured the song and Rupert, who became close friends with Madonna, convinced her to do a cover of it.
While the original version was actually about the tragic death of 3 very famous singers (the day the music died), Madonna used it as an opportunity to celebrate the diversity of our country. However, she has never been satisfied with her rendition as the original was such a classic that she has never performed it live to this day.
I love how she reimagined this song to make it more general and more abstract . The original is also amazing but would not have suited the reason as to why Madonna / Rupert Everett were redoing it. It's like two different songs . And I like them both for different reasons and in different ways.

So, basically she turned the original classic into an electronic lullaby . . . saving only the most autobiographical verses, thus shortening the song (which only added to the backlash)- but gaining praise for her creative reinvention of the hit from Don McLean, himself. Madonna stated how she dislikes doing cover-tracks, but it was Rupert Everett’s favorite- so she did it for him. He’s the one in the video & on background vocals & her co-star in The Next Best Thing- where this remake was used.
My only criticism for the video is that Lauryn Hill utilized the side-by-side feature better, for old-school & new-age scenes, in “Doo-Wop (That Thing)”.
As for the song, I believe it went to #1 in the UK; America was a different story . . . I remember one radio dj near me (Boston or Providence) groaned like, “Ugh, sounds like Karen Carpenter came-back from the dead!” 😤🤬
It didn’t help that in the previous couple years, the movie by the same title was already a blockbuster, Weird Al released a Star Wars-parody, “The Saga Begins”. So, maybe every1 was all American Pied-out?
Madonna was originally scheduled to perform the 2000 SuperBowl Half-Time Show, but perhaps these reactions were why she declined- “looking forward to working together with the NFL, in the future(2012).” She stated inadequate timing to choreograph a proper SuperBowl-caliber performance, but I believe she’d just discovered that she was pregnant with Rocco- who was born August 11, 2000.
