10 Awful Trends In LINEAR SINGLE PLAYER Games (That You Are Tolerating Anyway)

- Linear seems to some a dirty word when describing video games. Sure, their design has potential to limit the boundless player freedom found in open world experiences, but linear single player games allow developers to craft concise, measured narratives.
To keep the story ticking along as the developer intends though certain trends are deployed - sometimes to excess - which do knock the experience down a peg or two.
Funnelled pathways, lack of choice, invisible barriers; these elements are incumbent in linear single player games and at their worst can break immersion or disturb the flow of an otherwise stately crafted narrative. This feature aims to highlight ten of the worst trends prevalent in linear single player games. - Hry
Love single games because there's no modders/hackers to ruin the game for you when you're trying to chill out!
Or kids. Like logging into CoD, and your team is made up of screaming 10 year olds.
Yep. I freakin’ can’t stand multiplayer for exactly these reasons.
Doesn’t mean you should have to suffer in multiplayer games. We should be able to “chill out” in MP. Not just flood the market with only single player games.
Preach!!!
"Single player games are dead"
Translation: "We can't monetize them the way we want to"
Exactly!
Single player games are great especially linear games
Agree
My only issue with single player games is having so much storage being taken up with the online multiplayer side that I can't delete. I don't do online MP, last time was with Age of Empires2 back in the late nineties.
Absolutely!
The worst kind of map is no icons to tell you were the Collectables are
The worst kind of video games are those that have map infested with icons to tell you were you need to be
Unskippable cutscenes even on repeat playthroughs is a game sin lol 😆
Unwanted Cutscenes - Jedi Survivor had cutscenes in the middle of boss fights that would break up the flow of combat. Cere’s fight against a boss was made more challenging because I would do well in one of the first phases, but the cutscenes would take me out of rhythm for the final difficult phase.
I don't mind these as long as they're implemented right.
I am close to 40 years old, and I’ve been a single player gamer since I was 4. Enjoyed couch co-op as a kid, but I was one of the few in my circle of friends to continue gaming as a hobby, so single player is a natural fit. Unfortunately, starting with the 8th generation of consoles, single player games have turned in to these multi million dollar movie wanna be productions. They might tell a decent story, but they’re really just not that fun to play because no one is taking gameplay risks with that much money on the line. Returnal is a perfect recent example of telling an engaging story that doesn’t get in the way of truly great gameplay.
I too have just entered 40's. I remember playing my grandpa's Atari as a little kid. But I wasn't a gamer until I got a NES. I don't really have any gamer friends either, but I've had a lot of luck with randoms online. Multiplayer games were always more about the competitive nature for me though. The only real co-op I liked were the first GTA Heists and Remnant 2. As far as single player goes, I used to be able to enjoy a lot, but open world games ruined the linear ones for me. GTA, Red Dead, Far Cry. Now I can't play anything on rails. The closest I've come recently is Dead Island 2 with it's little mini open worlds. What's funny is that even though I can't bring myself to play linear single player games, I still like the stories and world-building. Like right now, I would not be able to get through Alan Wake 2. However, I'm enjoying watching Gab Smolders play through it. Which reminds me of when I was a kid, and I'd watch my friends play all the great SNES RPG's. I hated playing Final Fantasy, Chrono Trigger, etc. But I would sit on the couch and get into the stories and worlds. Also, I don't mind games becoming more movie like. Like, I thought No Way Home and The Spider-verses were great Spider-Man movies, but the game Spider-Man 2 might be my new favorite. I really loved what they did with all of the characters. Like, I want to New Game + it, not for the gameplay, but for the story.
I'm with you my gaming brother's! I just turned 40 on the 1st of this month and I'm so excited how far gaming has come. I don't have a lot of time to play, but when I do, I'm completely absorbed in a good solo experience to get lost in for a few hours when possible!!!
The unskippable cutscene right before a difficult section/boss fight. There's nothing that drives me crazier than watching an awesome cutscene, jumping into a crazy section of game, and then getting crushed and having to rewatch the cutscene to get back to the action. By the third time through, that awesome cutscene becomes a serious annoyance that you don't even like anymore.
Adding Side quests into linear games as they know people will bitch about a game being to short so they add in side quests to pad it.
Can you do a video of 10 awful trends in online multiplayer games....
Some top ones for me are...
*Companies ending the game support prematurely and/or making the game become useless and/or unplayable to push people to a new version or an entirely new game (even if there is still a devoted fan base that still plays the previous game)
*Micro-transactions/loot boxes - having to spend a lot of extra money for stuff just to upgrade and/or even make your characters/game playable.
*Companies not allowing mods for certain games (that would fix errors/sucks/glitches or modifying the game to a player/players specifications and/or for their own enjoyment).
*Companies not regulating players fair play interaction (I'm not talking about players bad mouthing/crap talking to other players but), having a newer player to a game, who might be at a level 1 character just started out that gets decimated/destroyed by a 100 billion level player (and them taunting those new players endlessly) making them quit online play & not have a fun gaming experience.
Just beat lies of p it was amazing now playing re4remake, deadspace remake, Spiderman remake, all on pc.
Good taste. I've got all those and all are great games
It’s true the collectibles in god of war were a pain to find later 🏆
QTE in cutscenes are annoying. I would at least like a border or something to indicate that I have to do something. I use cutscenes to drink water, grab a snack, or check my phone. Immediately dropping one of these things to press a button can be disastrous.
6:37 what game is this ?

Am I a lonely guy if I really like to play a Single player games like an action, open world, platform and rpg games just by myself alone, that sounds lonely right? 😢😮
Nah man. You’re good. It’s ok to be alone sometimes. Find comfort in it. Have a great life.
@@jeremyblackwater439 thank you, I have a great life and I'm alone really much I only have a friends in my workplace but sometimes life feels too alone defiwnitily here in countryside in middle of nowhere.
@@Leopez02 you have any pets? Even a fish can be company.
@@jeremyblackwater439 we have a much of pets one Guinea Pig, two cats and 8 dogs, yeah that's much of pets
No, not at all. I play games for fun, but also to escape from the everyday things, like people. Love my down, alone time!
Multi-Player "additions" and the go to from single player gaming to 'live-service'' bollocks are the bane of decent games, let alone good games or even great games. I USED to play games a lot, but not so much now BECAUSE of all the cash grabbing nonsense.
I've been playing Tiny Tina's Wonderland without anybody else, and find it a delightful single player experience...maybe we should be looking at the games with multiplayer just Shoved in
Amazing content
I think the worst part about single player games beyond the obvious of repetitive side quests and narrative dissonance are the walking segments in how they are simultaneously too short to be moderately ingrained into the narrative without feeling evidently clear that it's just an excuse to further artificially pad out the run time, but also _just_ long enough where you get sick of holding forward all the time and would rather the game have just not force you to control your character during the dialogue banter.
It's very annoying when they take you out of the experience just to force you to slowly stumble in a pre-designated pathway that both you and the developers knows could've just been a cutscene.
It's even worse when you don't have a fully functional controller, or a faulty one, my analog sticks always seem to get some kind of drift or issue where it stops working when I push forward, making my walking seem really glitchy all the time, if the walking segment takes more than 10 seconds it should just be a cutscene
It doesn’t sound like you like any type of games, maybe join a bowling league
So, no games should be single player, no missions or side quests should be added, we should play online against others multi player and put up with people cheating
@@charlieb308 I think you may have replied to the wrong comment, all they said was that they dislike pointless side missions and walking sections that could be replaced with a cutscene easily
@@kileak6 every single player game sucks!!! No game should have missions, people to give you side quests, no game should tell you anything at all! All games should be like real life, you walk around and do nothing.
I disagree on single-player games. On console where mods are largely non-existent then a "one and done" is what most do with a game.
I play on PS5 and PC and the latter can add more life to a game with mods.
I LOATHE multiplayer as well as any people who whine and push for it to be added to single-player games. NO. You have your games and we don't push for single-player to be added to multiplayer games. Learn to play both or don't play single player.
Some games don't have good replayability. I don't care about trophies and achievements but do like when one pops up. Some I've played once and then a few years later have played again. I did it with "Alan Wake" and "American Nightmare" earlier this year before starting Part 2.
Many gamers have plenty of games that if some idiots decide to only make multiplayer, "Live" service, and games with micro transactions we'll gladly quit buying any new games.
Open world games killed corridor games for me. I tried and can't play games like God of War, Jedi Fallen Order, etc. anymore. Like the PS5 came with GoW, but I got like one miniboss in and was just bored and frustrated. It just goes from setpiece to hallway to setpiece to hallway to setpiece to hallway until the end. Oh wait, let's mix it up and have you go down the same hallways again. These are what I call 'Let's Play Games'. Because I get the same amount of excitement from playing as I do just watching someone else play it. The worst is when you throw "survival horror" into the mix. Now, not only am I backtracking the same hallway, but I have no health or ammo. That's not tense or scary. That's just more frustrating. It makes the lack of an open world worse, too. Like Resident Evil games. You can clearly see a path that if this were GTA or Red Dead, you could take. But you are on rails, so you need to go down a maze of corridors and then backtrack to where you were. Yay, I unlocked this door that I could have just walked around to bypass. Like, oh no, I can't walk over this car to escape. I need to go through a sewer labyrinth with one-hit kill monsters. Then backtrack to where I was. At least do like Dead Island 2, where there are mini open worlds. Unless you are doing VR, I think we need to get away from the corridor games. Or maybe just some path choices. Like crossroads where you can choose right or left, stealth or loud.
Single player games are amazing, can always go back to an old system and pop in a disk or cart.
USB -if you're that guy
I love QTE’s in games & cut scenes.
What about bosses and mini-bosses that just get more phases/health to extend gameplay, but don't really add anything. Like in Spider-Man 2. Some of those were cool, like Venom evolving. Others, though, were just annoying. Like the MJ/Scream fight. It started out awesome, but then began to drag on too long. Another gripe with that game, why in the fuck is the healing the same bar as the special move. Having to choose between heal or takedown is so annoying.
This was a bizarre video that seems to be grasping at straws. Most of the "awful" trends mentioned can be observed in linear and open world games. And invisible walls in linear games are not really bad, in fact they are expected hence linear. They are more awful when encountered in open world games. But needless to say, you cannot expect games to have no boundaries at all. Well at least if it is not a game like No Man's Sky. or MS Flight Simulator.
Idk I honestly enjoy long cutscenes, qte's, and set pieces
skippable cut scenes should be mandatory. also bring back 007 goldeye level of unlockable funny gimmicks. bring back big head mode that isnt behind a paywall.
AWESOME video
I disagree on the tightly designed set pieces, when was choice proposed in last of us 2, I’ll answer… never. but to answer the question asked, it would’ve been horrible to let the player choose whether to kill Abby or not cause it’s not that type of game & then when the follow-up comes around you’d have to honor a choice that might be contrary to the story they wanna tell.
I love single player games and cutscenes. Not being able to skip on a first playthrough makes sense, 2nd and onwards doesn’t make sense. Always gonna prefer single player games, judging by stats and trophy stats…many people prefer single player games
Just make a good single player game, simple.
I wish games would get shorter. I find myself replaying a lot of the same games because theyre sub 6 hours
As a father of 5 kids aged 1 to 13 and a full time job I prefer single player, one and done experiences. I also do not want to play open world games full of bloat that boast 100hrs plus of gameplay. I would rather have different gaming experiences than spend too long with one game. Don't get me wrong though I do enjoy open world games just ones that are more focused and contained than AC Valhalla for example.
i have ALWAYS "big boss" battles, since X-men destiny, force unleashed 1 AND two I just hate them... oh can't forget God of War
Lootboxes, and MTXs in general, are the most insidious things to ever appear in videogame. Now we have MTXs letting the player skip past parts of the game; in effect they're paying money to NOT play the game.
SPOILER FOR THE LAST OF US PART 2 @ 7:06 - 7:22
WTF happened with the spoiler alert dude !
SPOILER ALERT THIS DUDE SPOILS THE ENDING OF THE LAST OF US 2 WITH ZERO WARNING AND RUINED IT FOR ME SO PLEASE WATCH OUT IF YOU HAVENT GOTTEN AROUND TO PLAYING YET
I don’t have any gaming friends so I only play single player games
Outstanding
QTE's boil my p155!!!
Ugh. Hated The Last of Us Part 2, the gameplay was fun, but thebplot just wasnt as good. Playing through as Abbey was a chire. Tried to replay it afterwards and just got bored...
Hello
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Say what you want, but I’d rather play a good single player game once or twice through then play a multiplayer game that’s only out to drain my bank account when I wanna unlock some rewards, when years ago you used to get skins and unlocks by, ya know, JUST PLAYING THE FUCKING GAME!
LINEAR SINGLE PLAYER GAMES FOR LIFE!!
I like a lot of these features you’re complaining about.
But single player games are still very popular and the last of us part 1 and part 2 even final fantasy games are popular even next year final fantasy rebirth coming and Spider-Man 2 is very popular and uncharted games have great story
making characters ugly
Honesty feel like this channel is just trying to troll gamers with the rubbish they're pushing out. Putting one of the best single payer games of recent times in the thumbnail
I prefer linear games to open games. With open games the rythm and progression of the story is lost.
Alan Wake 2 has the worst thing from every game in it
I'll take a linear single player game over multiplayer anytime
Me too!
This is why souls games are my favorite
7th
dont play games , problem solved
I like linear games I’m done with open world games
