  • Trams have been running in Kolkata for over 140 years. They are unique to the city and added to its culture and economic growth. But now, these trams face a great deal of uncertainty. Will trams, once an iconic landmark of Kolkata, die?
The number of passengers, staff and daily revenue on these trams has dwindled. But members of the Calcutta Tram Users’ Association have been fighting for the restoration of services. They feel trams should be made a more integral part of transportation in Kolkata.
At a time when the world is fighting climate change and sky-rocketing fuel prices, trams that neither emit smoke nor consume fuel could be the way to go.

Having visited Kolkata many times to see my relatives there, I personally think the trams of Kolkata should be kept because shutting it down completely would really send out the wrong message when many countries around the world which phased out trams have now reintroduced them (and even upgraded systems which are older) - India is now even planning to reintroduce trams in the form of Metrolite, and Kolkata would lose some of its charm & character if they go completely. However, at the same time, the system really needs an upgrade if it is to carry on functioning because if it carries on in its current state, I definitely believe they'll be phased out completely within the decade or two.
Having seen many tram systems around the world, I also think that the perception that trams are a slow and outdated form of transport is an incorrect and even ignorant view to have, because modern trams are faster (with speeds up to 70-80 kmph) so they don't hold up traffic that much, trams can be longer for more passenger capacity, they have dedicated trams stops for the trams to stop safely and they have reserved sections where available so that they don't interrupt other traffic much. I think modern trams can definitely serve as a feeder system to areas of the city which are not served by the metro or which don't need metro service.
However, having read recent articles of plans to replace trams in narrow, congested sections with trolleybuses and restrict them to wider, less busy sections or the Maidan line, I think its a real shame that the State Government doesn't care for trams that much in general. I also find it weird that they are willing to import trolleybuses from abroad but not import modern trams (like Bombardier, Alstom & Urbos trams) to upgrade the system. Now I don't think the older trams need to be completely removed, a few old trams can be kept for heritage/tourism purposes (cities like San Francisco do that) but modern trams can be used for most public transport services. However, if they have no plan to modernise the current system, the least they can at least do is keep one or two lines open with the older trams for the sake of heritage/tourism (the Maidan line seems perfect for that as its the only reserved line left) and maybe introduce modern trams in the newer parts of the city (like New Town).

I still remember the ting ting bell sound of the tram alerting all vehicles to give way. The ride across maidan is iconic and nostalgic. In my childhood days tram was a important part of Kolkata public transport. Esplanade was hub of trams with trams from different routes terminated and originated from this terminus. I propose government to modernize and re-vamp tram system in routes possible. Major disadvantages of Kolkata trams are occupation of already scarce road space and snail speed leading to traffic jams.

Make them sophisticated and faster then more people will ride it. Moreover traffic of cars and bike scooter needs to be stopped on few narrow streets and made walking only through which trams can go.... And most importantly we need to replan our city...removing ghettos and more road space.... No permit should be given to buildings without car parking facilities.. Someone rescue the tram system 🙏. When India is trying her best to introduce new electric vehicles. We are forgetting what we already have. There is no serious effort to improve it. How can someone not see its political milage even. Trams are green transport and perfectly in line with the vision of the current government . The tram system like the railways require a lot of hands and that means new job. It can also be introduced in the new town Kolkata offering a joy ride covering citizens park wax museum etc. There is a blog by MRB ON THE POSSIBILITY OF LRT(Trams) in New Town. It looks spectacular.

All over the world people are moving to electric transport. Since India too has the goal of limiting pollution and almost the train systems have become fully electric we should consider trams again. European cities have trams. If we make proper infrastructure trams will be a good mode of public transit.

trams are useless... they have much more cons than pros
it is relatively slow, almost blocks the track; if breaks down then can't be removed from the spot or towed away easily/quickly
overhead wire snapping also causes major traffic jams and stops all trams of that line in their path
the tram tracks are hard to repair/replace; are slippery for 2 wheelers which causes accidents (every single day 5-10 two wheelers slip and fall, go to Chitpur check yourself) and even bus tires get stuck on broken/worn off tracks
just because it is referred as heritage doesn't mean it should continue
