Arnold Schwarzenegger stars as Sheriff Owens, a disgraced lawman who fled the LAPD to lord over the sleepy border town of Sommerton Junction, which becomes the only thing in the way of an escaped head of a drug cartel's path to freedom in Lionsgate's The Last Stand. I Saw the Devil's Kim Jee-Woon directs from a script by Andrew Knauer and Jeffrey Nachmanoff. Peter Stormare, Forest Whitaker, Luis Guzman, Harry Dean Stanton, and Johnny Knoxvile co-star.

The cops in the car behind the van that's being grabbed should clearly have seen magnet being lowered and gotten out to shoot like 10 seconds prior to everyone else.

Agreed. Irl, inside that van would be atleast a half dozen agents armed to the teeth. And the convoy would have been escorted by the US Army and watched over by helos from them and US Coast Guard. But, this is a movie and God knows Hollywood has a flare for the dramatic.
Overall in this movie Forest Whittaker done enough to be fired ten time over lol.
All his stings etc. Are foiled easily and hundreds of elite units are killed. Then the only way the guy doesn't escape is simply because Arnie is in the right place at the right time.

the cartels have alot of ex mexican army speacial forces guys in thier organization they train all their members in hand to hand combat teach them how to kill an move like trained assassin so yes i could see how they could possibly pull a stunt like this off

0:14 Someone is controlling a huge crane not too far away from the cars. Do the cops ever look for the crane operator? -No. Instead, they miss shots at the woman standing unnecessarily on top of the giant magnet. Because: movie.
Edit: 0:31 You can see the control booth of the crane. It's about 20m away from them.

Seems quite stupid they didn't plan for that possibility and the bad guys had plenty of time to place that crane, the zip lines and getaway cars. Someone probably snitched or there was a planned stall ahead
