The ice bags story is not a good one to judge the education quality of the local area. This was one example, but too isolated to label the whole town. You asked for 30 pounds, and her question was a valid one. Did you want 28 pounds (under 30), or 35 pounds (to meet the goal of 30). Can you look at SAT scores instead?

You should look at the public school ratings by zip code, Its just a massive gradient from east to west worst to best. This isn't specific to austin but it gives a really clear picture of what the education is like here and how just living on the east side can put you in a much worse situation in terms of education and financial support.

From September to May you can probably live in a van in Austin, but June thru August would be too warm to sleep for most people, unless you can adjust to the humidity. I once knew someone who waited until everyone went home, then slept in the office. He also had a vehicle he slept in when the weather was cooler. Motel parking lots are usually good places to overnight in, but choose a different motel every night - lots of different vehicles come and go.

Yup. I graduated from a school in Austin in 1990 and houses were super affordable. Like from $50k and up. Teachers and police could afford to live in Austin then. I eventually left Austin after graduation and moved back years later only to find rent had gone up. I kept moving apts every year when my lease was up because the apt management would tend to add a monthly increase of $50-$100 just because I had a dog! When I left Austin 16 years ago to move to Kansas, I was paying $600 a month for a 422 sq ft apt and I was told last month the same apt rents for $1,300 a month! My 3 bedroom 2.5 bathrooms 2 living areas, full kitchen and basement on 1/4th of an acre...I paid $124k (it was a former hoarder house and it's been fixed up here and there now) and my property taxes are around $1,500, I believe. My house payments which include house payment, property tax, and house insurance totals around $900 a month. When I left Austin 16 years ago, the average house price was $150k and starting to climb. My sister still lives there and still hasn't had her property. She rents. So does my best friend's brother who has lived there 25 years and he's been with the IRS for 23 years. He still can't afford a house. Very crazy when you think about it! IF I move back to Austin (I still really like the town though), I would probably live in Dripping Springs, New Braunfels and south of Austin. I might even consider San Antonio. The interesting thing though is I am also considering Kentucky! Low crime rate, quiet communities, mountains (esp the eastern part of the state) and there are jobs to be had. I'm planning to visit Kentucky sometime in 2023.

Thanks for sharing, Ted! Yeah the hill country of Dripping Springs and New Braunfels is gorgeous. And 30-45 minutes to downtown - not too bad. Plus, much more affordable. I do love the mountains, but there's something about the Austin vibe that I miss when I'm gone. My husband and I bought out house 10 years ago (thank goodness!) and have watched the market explode since.

The property tax in Austin must be one of the reasons.
From TCAD's evidence document after I filed protest, I found out that TCAD appraised home value without time adjustment on comparable sales. That's completely wrong for a peaked then trended down market in 2022. Your home appraisal value will be heavily depends on the sold date of the comparable sales. TCAD's chief appraiser Marya Cigler should take responsibility for this mass scaled mistake. She is incompetent for her job and should be removed from her position. Williamson CAD did a better job by applying time adjustment on comparable sales, making home appraisal value matching real market value on 1/1/2023.
Market conditions and time adjustment analysis are critical for any appraisal and is done to establish any rates of market appreciation or depreciation that took place during the time frame that spans the collected sales. The January 1st appraisal date is a specific point in time, so sales transacted before this date must be examined and adjusted to reflect any changes that may have occurred since then. Without time adjustments, the sale prices of properties selected in sale comparison grids will reflect the market conditions as of the date when they were sold, rather than the January 1stvalue of similar real estate.
With a sudden macro environment change in 2022, time adjustment to the comparable sales is the most critical, but TCAD ignored it.
TCAD should recall the mistaken notice of appraisal and re-do their appraisal, instead of having homeowners to protest. Chief appraiser, MARYA CRIGLER should take responsibility for this mistake. This mistake is on a large scale and affected most homeowners in Travis County.

DON’T MOVE TO AUSTIN!!! I moved to Austin in 1971 to attend the University of Texas. The city was a paradise. Imagine this: 250,000 population with 50,000 college students and the main employers in the city were the University of Texas and a state government controlled by Democrats. We were the ‘liberal’ oasis inside of conservative Texas. Rents were cheap. I rented my first apartment for $200 per month. There was lots of live music, restaurants, and other fun things to do. People were easy-going, welcoming, and friendly. Traffic was quite reasonable. Rush hour lasted about 30 minutes. You could be the only car on a major thoroughfare. For me it was the perfect city-small enough to get around and escape but big enough to provide everything you needed.
Now just the opposite is the case. The population of Austin is pushing 1,000,000 and the entire metro-population is almost 2,500,000. We are still struggling to get by on the road system that was largely in place when I moved here, and all the modern improvements to the road system turn out to be toll roads. We have a continuous rush hour that never stops. It can take hours to get to and from work and going anywhere between 7 o’clock in the morning until about 8 or 9 o’clock at night can be a very aggravating experience. Don’t think that public transportation will offer relief. Expect public transportation to take twice as long because the buses are stuck in the same traffic as the cars and giant ‘man’ trucks. That’s why drivers in Austin drive very aggressively and are angry all the time. Housing is very expensive and continues to go up. My friends that rent are paying $1700 to $1800 per month for one bedroom apartments. Soon their rents will be above $2000 per month. Wages are low. After all, Texas is a ‘right to work’ southern state. If you don’t have an elite high-tech job, expect to live in poverty. Live entertainment still exists but expect to be packed in like sardines and driving for hours in heavy traffic to get there and later to escape. Austin’s ‘liberality’ is eroding in a very hateful and draconian state.
So, don’t expect to be welcomed if you move here. People trapped in a city that doesn’t work for them with no relief in sight resent the people that move here and just make things worse.

  • @wzrd9s
    @wzrd9s Před rokem +1

I grew up in San Antonio (1957-1986)and now live in The Colony (Frisco area). The property taxes here suck, BUT. In states with an income tax your money disappears in the state budget and no one will ever know what happens to it. That's just like your federal taxes. My biggest tax is School Tax. That goes to the local school district so its spent within 10 miles of your home for education and facilitates. City tax is next and that pays for your police and keeps the pot holes filled. There is a Major Metropolitan Transportation Tax if you live in one of six major metro areas. That pays for the trains and buses. The sales tax, 4.5% I think, is what the state operates on. In California you have a state income tax of some 13%, plus sales tax, property tax and some places city income tax. And no one knows where all that money goes. So taxes here are high but you can see where the money goes and you can hold mayors, county commissioners and school board members responsible at the ballot box.

I just came from a video on this channel called "Why You Should Move to Austin", and now I'm at a video called "Don't Move to Austin" 😆
I think the biggest problem with Austin is not growth per se, but affordability. I *want* everyone who wants to live in Austin to be able to live there. The question is whether Austin can grow in a way that keeps costs low enough for those who are already there, or is the influx of people going to drive up the prices for everybody, new and old alike. And yes, it is very sad that Austin's rising housing costs are pushing out the very kinds of people who made Austin's culture special and great. That said, at least when I lived in Austin from 2016 to 2020, I was still able to find plenty of that weird Austin culture - "boho", as you call it.
I actually like Austin's warm summer nights! It sounds like the heat is really bad this year though. I never had a particularly huge problem with allergies when I was in Austin, but I still had to take allergy medication to deal with a different problem: mosquito bites! I never saw anyone carrying guns around either. As a matter of fact I don't remember seeing a single gun in my entire time there.

LOL about your fear of guns.
Been living here for 2+ years.. relocated from Arlington, VA.
Austin is an absolute gem of a place to VISIT...
And Austin is a great place to live IF YOU HAVE TO LIVE HERE (i.e. If you have to come here for work, school, starting a business)
I work from home and can live anywhere in the states and for me personally, Austin is wayyyy too liberal (like, noticeably liberal, like people wearing "DONT TREAD OF ME" Ovary shirts), getting more and more expensive by the day, and getting way too crowded. Traffic is just horrendous and there are multiple accidents on the highways everyday, when finally get to your destination you have to wait in line (especially in the summer) to do ANYTHING. OR try to find parking - good lord.
Also... I guess I am not coming from NY or CA but everyone says people are "so friendly here".... furrows brow I would never say this is a "southern hospitality type of town" by any means. People aren't going to stop and ask you how your day is or anything (and the people that do... are the true Texans, which are like 1% of the people here). People aren't down-right rude and mean but they aren't particularly altruistic either... not like when you go to the Carolinas or conservative midwest.
Negative Nancy... but seriously, when moving to TEXAS.. I guess I thought "Southern Living"...but I think there are just so many transplants from those fast-paced towns and that is the vibe now. Move to Fort Worth if you want slower-paced & southern hospitality, I suppose.
The BBQ is dammmmmmn good, I will give Austin that (be prepared to wait in a 2 hour line but yeah dammmmn good).. and the food in general (which now is coming from all different areas of the US and the World).
On that note, there is a reason so many people come here to visit (especially for bachelor/bachelorette parties). There are seriously ENDLESS bars and restaurants. I wish there was just more to do without having to going out and drop a dime. You only have a few options (that I know of) when it comes to outdoor activities... in comparison to places like Colorado, California, Utah, Vermont, etc.
    This about sums it up:
-Lady Bird Lake & Barton Springs (swimming and SUP/kayaking)
    -Zilker
    -Lake Travis (for boating)
    -Greenbelt
Also the dating here - geeze la weeze (not a fan - definitely a "singles" city lets just say)
Needless to say - I am moving. It is a bitter sweet because I've made some great friends but I have learned that this is a transitory city and many people come for a short time and move.
    Hope this helped someone :)

What about unproblematic people looking to move here ? Some people just want to explore more and see other places . I’m looking at Texas as a potential place but people stay downing it or saying don’t move there(because I’m black and lgbtq and it gets annoying when people project that I’m going to be assaulted / discriminated against because it’s a “red state”) . Is there a good Art scene ? I come from a place with horrible allergies so check there . Lol I also like hiking with my dog so I get where that would be a bummer . I don’t mind guns , as long as the owners are responsible , and I do think responsible owners should speak out about those who are reckless . I was looking at Austin and other areas because they said it was more greenery there as far as parks and things to do , and that it was very dog friendly, as I have two pups I have to account for as well.

I mean yeah you don't know the person with the gun but how is that a problem? You don't know the people without the guns either.
And a gun is just a tool. Tools can be used properly or improperly and a mass shooter isn't gonna care either way.
Anyways as an Austinite gripes I have about the city are
    1. traffic
    2. road rage.
    3. Propaganda this whole "This city is so perfect and everyone is just happy here and gets along as is polite!" construct/impression is just nauseating.
    4. Costs of living
    5. Litter
    6. Rude people.

      @AustinTexasLiving  Před rokem

Well, as it turns out, the people without guns are much less of a threat to my personal safety than people with guns, precisely because of the "tool" they choose not to carry.
I totally agree with most if your other grips about the city - traffic and road rage are crazy. Cost of living for housing is very high - but most other factors are ein line with the national average or lower. I'm visiting my parents in central FL right now and gas is $1 higher per gallon than Austin.
I haven't experienced a lot if rude people here. And most folks who move here from out of state tell me one of the things they love about Austin is that people are so friendly here.

I like Ms. Moores video and she's right on all counts. She left something out that's important to add to her story. I travel alot and have lived in Austin for 39 years. So...the thousands of dysfunctional, addicted, mentally ill, alcoholic A-holes wandering around this city now is out of control. I have no doubt everybody living here has had enough. I don't see what I see here almost anywhere else I go when I'm on the road. I've been in Miami, Tallahassee, Montgomery, Charlotte, Hattiesburg,Jackson, Shreveport and New Orleans just in the last three weeks. Whoever the City of Austin marketing genius was that tagged that line as a way to promote Austin couldn't have envisioned this bulls*"t. "Keep Austin Weird Man"....Ridiculous! Well it certainly is now and not in the cool vibe cosmic cowboy ways anybody wants. I don't think families with small children visiting Austin are ever expecting to see homeless women with no top on drunk and screaming to whatever in the middle of the afternoon in the downtown area! People here try to act like it's not that bad but it truly is absolutely worse than I've ever seen it. It's also common knowledge that law enforcement agencies in other cities will export their homeless to Austin by giving them a one way bus ticket. The latest surprise I've learned about is that homeless people use the Public Libraries to contact their homeless friends in other cities on social media to come to Austin because there's so much free help and free resources here. With that said I've been fortunate, I work hard, I make a good living and don't suffer from any of the problems that could indicate why a person would become homeless. That's not enough in America any longer either. It wouldn't take that much for anybody in America to end up on the street. How about "Keep Austin Normal." That would be a welcome change.
