Fun fact: The following advertisement appeared as full-page ads in many magazines some years ago. Mid 90s?
    An Apology
    Dear Motorists,
Subaru Australia would like to apologise for the article titled 'The Handling Debate' published in a recent issue of AUTOCAR (UK). The contest unfairly pitted the two-wheel drive Porsche 911, BMW M3, Lotus Elise and Peugeot 306 GTi-6 against the All-Wheel Drive Subaru Impreza WRX.
It was not so much the result that has embarrassed us, but the way in which one of the most respected and authoritative motor magazines went about damaging the reputation of the world's most prestigious car companies.
It must have been heartbreaking for them to read that Autocar named the All-Wheel Drive Subaru 'The Ultimate Driver's Car' and called it 'one of the outstanding car designs of the decade.'
Obviously Autocar were amazed by the acceleration off the line of the Subaru during the Traction Test. But did they really have to go on and on about it? 'Six and a half thousand revs, dump the clutch and away she goes. And there was nothing even the 911 could do to touch it.'
Our hearts go out to all those rear-wheel drive Porsche owners who paid 5 times the price of the Subaru, only to come a distant second. As if they didn't have enough insecurities already!
And it's hard not to feel for the poor BMW driver whose M3 clocked up an impressive 46/52mph in the Speed Corner Test, only to read '... that was nothing compared with the beautifully balanced Impreza through the bend. Result? A crushing 52mph in the wet, 58mph in the dry and the widest smile from our drivers all day.' Really, how could a two-wheel drive be expected to compete with that?
But it wasn't until Autocar said '... so well balanced was the Subaru's basic handling and so well apportioned was the grip between the four driven wheels that... in the dry the Subaru was untouchable,' that the rumours and innuendo began to surface.
For the record, we would like to state that every new Impreza, Forester, Outback and Liberty we sell does in fact contain the unfair advantage of Subaru All-Wheel Drive plus our unique flat-four boxer engine and summetrical drive line. Admittedly, it does make contests like this a little one-sided.
So much so that All-Wheel drive vehicles have been banned from the world's major motor sport competitions like Formula One. Only the World Rally Championship allows us to demonstrate the full advantages of AWD. A championship, by the way, we've won for the past 3 years.
Even Autocar admits 'a properly sorted All-Wheel drive car like the Impreza will blitz any two-wheel drive rival in virtually any objective handling contest. That's a truly astonishing result given the quality of the rest of the field.' You see, there was nothing they could do.
In the end, the only thing we couldn't handle was all the attention. 'There was one very clear winner in this contet. The Impreza was more composed, generally faster and markedly grippier than most of the competition in most of the tests.'
Again, Subaru would like to apologise for any harm or distress this has caused any makers or owners of two-wheel-drive vehicles and outrageously expensive sports cars.
The fact that our All-Wheel Drive vehicles start from $21,990 (and $39,990 for the Impreza WRX) must simply rub salt into the wound.
For those looking for compensation, please visit your nearst Subaru Dealer. By experiencing All-Wheel Drive yourself, it should go some way to making the whole situation easier to handle.
If you would like a full copy of the Autocar article in question, call Subaru on 1 800 642 454, or visit our website www.subaru.com.au. And remember, we don't write the articles, we just make the cars.
    Yours sincerly,
    Trevor Amery
    Managing Director

I bought my MY99 Impreza WRX brand new at the end of 1998. Still have it, parked safely in my garage about 20m from where I'm typing this.
160,000 KM on the clock, still tight, still puts a huge smile on my face every time I drive it.
It's still on the original clutch, brakes, you name it. The only mods are upgraded sway bars, cross braces and a 3" turbo back exhaust for extra aural goodness.
They sold SO many of these cars in Australia, but there aren't many left. Crashed, modded beyond recognition or just driven into the ground I guess.
I see the used price is close to what I paid for mine new 23 years go, so it's not been a bad deal at all!

I don't know if you have ever heard of the late Sabine Schmitz and her home track the Nurburgring she was one kickarse fast talented lady RIp Sabine Check out some of the footage of Sabine in her Porsches ar even the BMW "Nurburgring Taxi" where she chauferred guests around the ring at warp speed.
As for Rallying when I competed in the sport we did it blind no pacenotes just turn left a T junction say 3.2 k's down the road so if it was a big dangerous drop a little stick man with a parachute and a warning no to overshoot.
Much more difficult doing it fast enough to be competitive yet also driving the roads blind, Been in 5th gear doing 200 kmh downhill sometimes on dirt but there are some tricks involved such as in an area where they did timbet felling the trucks they use Timber Jinkers can have different wheelbases on the trailers because they basically chain the rear bogies around the tree trunks.
What that does mean to a clued up rally driver is they cannot set the trailer wheelbase at a certain length then shorten it up half way along a road to get around a tight corner, That means once you sus out how tight the first few corners are on a road you will not find a tighter corner along that stretch of road if it is used by timber jinkers hence you can go faster than those who do not know this little trick. and believe me it is very hard work shaving just seconds a kilometer off the opposition.

Mark Higgins is really a man cut from a different cloth. He's fantastic at rallycross, time attack, endurance racing n on 2 wheels.
You should do a video on Dakar sometime. It's gruelling to say the least. It's like Baja turned up to 11. A good friend of mine did Dakar. He was in fact the 1st Indian to do so. We were all super pumped but equally worried. He started from the back of the pack n finsihed 36th overall. He had come up over a crest airborne n landed on a rock n ended up shattering his right foot n 2 toes but continued pushing for the remaining 150 odd miles to the finish line. He's done 6 stints so far n completed thrice. Twice the bike developed mechanical issues n ended havin to quit since there wasn't enough time to get it repaired n back on the road. Last year he hit a rock concealed in the dunes n got thrown off the bike n got knocked unconscious. His team mate who was abit behind him noticed flames n smoke n stopped by n resuscitated him n called in for medical support. He was in a medically induced coma for over a week. He's all good now but had to sit the 2022 event out. The man's a beast n is prepping for next year's rally. He's done Baja a few times too

The best series for me is the NLS. It's a German Endurance Series on the "Green Hell".
It's a mix of GT and Touring Cars in different classes together in one Race.
I saw it live a few times because I live round about 70 miles away from the Nordschleife and it's always amazing.

I've seen the video before and I love it, I'm so glad that now I'm watching you watching this video (If that makes any sense XD). The comments are actually pretty interesting though I haven't read all of them either, hence what I typed below, someone might have already said.
I do just want to confirm as the first thing I saw was in the title "Subaru Rally Car" it's just a minor thing, but If I remember correctly. I'm pretty sure is just a time-trial car, which is different to a rally car. since rally is built for endurance and multi-terrain, as well as multiple runs with the same car. Time-Trial Cars are built to produce the maximum amount of power and only really for 1 or 2 trials, kinda thing. The fuel put into the car is kinda only sufficient for the entire track and all.
It's just a minor thing and, I might actually be incorrect about this. but I just thought I'd still let you know. Love your videos still!

      @raven-seven3786 Před 2 lety

I kinda also wrote that in a bit of a hurry, but I’m just saying that the car, I’m pretty sure is a time trial, though it is based on the rally WRX, the properties and all are slightly different, calling it a rally car is fine and there’s nothing wrong with it but in technical terms, I'm pretty sure it’s just a time trial car. (it’s probably just me being a bit nick picky)

Knows it like the back of his hand
And it's technically not a rally car
    It's a time attack car
