They did spend several years studying in the UK.
It wasn’t clear that you understood that you had been given flag accommodations on a ship designed to command and support amphibious operations. A flag officer is an Admiral or a General. In the case of HMS Albion, one of each. Your accommodations were for the two flags required in amphibious operations. The two flags are the Admiral afloat and the General ashore. Your accommodations were undoubtedly better than the Captain’s and certainly much better than every officer or enlisted person aboard.
The Captain's mess is more equipped than theirs
I work on a vessel usually designated flag ship, our best VIP quaters aren't even close to those of HMS Albion. Holy shit.
@@thomasstuhr7243 albion is the flagship of the fleet (not to be confused with the flag ship of the first sea lord, HMS victory). Bulwark, the sister ship, was previously the flagship.
not only better than any other officer of enlisted person cabin, down in the seamans mess they have 40 to 50 people in the same space.
Thank you for that informative comment. The only time I have been on an operational RN vessel was a nuclear submarine when I was a boy. Accommodation was ridiculously cramped as you'd expect on even a big submarine but I'd never have imagined even the captain would have such a large room on any warship.
Being a US navy veteran, I was quite impressed with the launch and recovery of the small boat during the MOB drill. Definitely a testament to their "training" "training" "training".
When an aircraft ditched on launching from the new aircraft carrier Queen Elizabeth, the rescue boat was launched in half the time of the normal drill practice time. The training paid off big time. They actually weren't needed. The pilot after ejecting landed with his parachute hooked on a lighting pole on the front of the ship. Quick thinking deck crew dragged him onboard before he slid down the ship's bow.
How freaking cool is that?!? Getting invited aboard HMS Albion!!!

How to extend you visa - stay on the ship , learn how to use the big guns ,make lots of friends with the pixulated guys -then tell the pencil pusher denying you visa to come get you if he can ..... tell them it is a drill .

What a wonderful couple. The episode that caught my breath, that slowed my heart, was when he decided to ride out one of the worst hurricanes to hit the west indies in recent memory.

Fearless was deployed to the Falklands during the Argentine conflict if I remember correctly. Were you serving at that time?h

The Royal Navy is on a PR campaign and are recruiting more than they have in the last decades. With two new carriers there's a lot of sailors needed.

HMS Albion is one of the Royal Navy’s two amphibious assault ships. Totally badass mission with the Royal Marines and special ops guys. How in the world did you get a invite? Very cool.
You mean an "amphibious transport dock", which is basically a mini (3/4 scale) version of a U.S. "dock landing ship", and much smaller than a real amphibious assault ship, which is essentially an aircraft carrier with a landing craft well. Here is an excerpt from the official RN website. "HMS Albion has been described as the Royal Navy’s ‘Swiss Army knife’ - and for good reason. This amphibious transport dock is capable of carrying 400 sailors and Royal Marines with a huge range of skills and experience, from technicians and engineers to medics and chefs.

@mrnickbig1 HMS Ocean was is referred to as a “Landing Platform Helicopter” as an official ship type in the RN. HMS Ocean did not have Well Deck, this would mean that whilst yes, the ship had landing craft, the ship would have been incapable of landing something like a Challenger 2 Main Battle Tank (from landing craft). The feature of a Well Deck is required for a ship to be classified as an Amphibious Assault Ship. As well as this, in NATO there is no which thing as an Amphibious Assault Ship, only things like LPHs and numerous other amphibious ship types. I believe that you are trying to join HMS Ocean with the US terminology and not the NATO standard terminology. Adding to this, in the question of the Albion Class ships, there is a lot of overlapping between different classifications of ships. So yes, the ships are in one sense an “Amphibious Transport Dock”, but could in fact be classed as “Amphibious Assault Ship” as there are no real requirements set in stone for these kinds of debates (other than the obvious factors of the ships needing to be able to launch large numbers of troops). And finally, in reference of how you want to define a ships class by it’s size, you only need to look at Aircraft Carriers to see that your argument is flawed. Both the former HMS Ark Royal and the USS Nimitz were Aircraft Carriers of around to same time period. If you look at the size difference between the two ships, one is almost 100,000 tones heavier than the other, but both are classified as Aircraft Carriers. Ps, the Albion class is actuality bigger than both of the US Class’s of Dock Landing Ship. PPS, are you sure that you are referring to the Albion Class of Ships, or the Bay Class (which the UK and Australia also uses)?
I spent 20 years in the US Navy and served 3 1/2 years on a Landing Ship Dock (USS Anchorage LSD-36) so I'm quite familiar with the type of ship you are visiting. Glad you are enjoying the stay, they obviously treated you guys like VIPs. I might mention my accommodations weren't so luxurious. Looking forward to seeing part 2.

Not sure about now but during my time in the US Navy, it was always "Oscar." I was submarines so not sure if that was the case on other vessels as well.
In the US Navy the man overboard dummy is called Oscar and on my first ship we had a gunner's mate from some backwoods State standing shark watch. His job was to shoot any sharks that got close to the the person who was in the water. One day a junior officer ran up to the gunner during a man overboard drill and screamed "There's a shark in the water what do you do?!" The gunner's mate dropped the rifle down from his shoulder, took a split second to aim, and from well over forty yards shot Oscar right between the eyes. He turned to the Ensign and said "Now that poor dumb bastard doesn't have to worry about that shark sir!". True story, and even though it happened well over thirty years ago thinking about it still brings a smile to my face.

@Jim Nickles in the US Navy? Americans are way to strict when it comes to downtime and relaxing. Maybe the Puritan influence? I would guess that on the Royal Navy sailors that are not on duty they can have beer every night. I think I heard that from an American reporter who visited a British military ship in NYC.
Hey guys awesome you got to do that with one of the finest Navys on THE Planet. Im from London living in Southern California and my son is in the US Navy based in San Diego. I have crossed the Pacific twice both times from Honolulu to San Diego once on the Nimitz Aircraft Carrier and second on a marine Deployment Ship. It was the most amazing experience of my life. They invite parents of service women and men coming back from Deployment to travel the final leg. Its called a Tiger Cruise. Best wishes to you both cheers.

As an ex-Navy guy (Canadian) and a coastal cruising sailor I am really glad you guys had that opportunity. I'm not sure most of the people I know around the "yacht club" really have any appreciation for the Navy and what we do or how much we learn. By the way, in Canada "Fred" is Oscar, and Oscar goes swimming at least once a day, usually more. Why? Because when you have a person overboard it IS that important to know exactly how you'll retrieve them quickly.
This was an amazing opportunity for you guys. Bravo Zulu to the RN for hosting you!

Pretty cool! As a part-time military member, I recognized that "writing style" immediately. The official letter you got is in fact a memorandum, used for internal communications in the military. The paragraphs are numbered so they can be easily referenced, and the text is written using short, concise sentences that go straight to the point and avoid ambiguity as much as possible. It's pretty weird to write at first, but once you get used to it, it's really efficient.

Funny how you weren't allowed a visa for more than 3 months but the Royal Navy invites you onto a ship. I would use that as an argument for a longer visa in the EU haha

That’s what I was thinking too, how can these countries deny people from staying in their country due to visa and citizenship statues but hey come on aboard our military ship, come inside the bridge and record everything while you’re at ... lmao ohhhh gotta just laugh at bureaucratic ironies
@@scottbeaulieu8192 UK haven't denied Kika. She can stay in UK, she just got a very limited visa to other Schengen countries. At least that is my understanding.
@@working2bselfsufficient724 True, but nothing will change until the end of 2020 when the transition deadline expires. There are still open boarders and trade to and from the UK as we speak.
My point is that i find that unfair she comes from Haiti and gets three months but for example Dylan Magaster from FLORB that also sails the world got 180 days. That tells me that they consider her a risk of illegal immigration or something along those lines. Being invited by the Royal Navy tells me that they have faith in both Dan and Kika to accurately show and represent the UK's finest but that same country wouldn't give her more time to stay. Now they probably can't extend their Schengen visa in the UK anymore but my point stands that being invited by one of the worlds finest navies is still a good look.

Every place we visit is special and unique and fascinates us. No one place is any better or worse than another, just different. So far, our stay in the UK is exactly what we needed.
That looks a lot like a US Navy LPD. I imagine it has similar capabilities as well.
Also, you guys were staying in the flag officer's quarters. Pretty fancy and that absolutely would not happen on a US Navy ship.
I was invited as an American civilian to make a passage on a US nuclear submarine from Hawaii to San Diego on board Hawkbill by the captain. That is suppose to not ever happen either.
USN ship are smaller and more efficient like the RFA bay class, but the albion class can carry more

That is a good definition. Personally a ship that is not my own I will always call a ship. Calling other peoples ships "boats" can be perceived as being rude. This one I would call a vessel :-)

@@scyz2807 floating dry docks or "sub tenders". They sink enough for the sub to sail in and then purge all the water out.

Invited to a Navy ship, but not allowed to be in the Schengenspace for a year ........ stupid laws here
@@SailingUma I cannot wait to hear how in the hell you scored this Royal treatment. My wife and I once got to sail for 2 days on the USS Enterprise, but we had to sleep in the racks with the rest of the sailors - packed in like sardines. We are so jealous! :-)
Have you investigated "Seaman's book"? The big selling point of having a Seaman's Book, comes when it is presented by a person who would ordinarily require a visa to enter the country. If the seaman can show that he is joining or leaving a vessel then the border official can waive the visa requirement.
@@olafk2297 Thats exactly what i had on my mind. But I think the laws are oke, the problem is the system that kills a self thinking and judgement mentality of the people in charge off the stamp.

Lived in Plymouth for many years and served down there in The RN from 1980 to 1991.
Your very lucky to get invited onboard and it reminds me of how great the navy can be.
The fact that they have done this is supercool. It really helps promote good relations.
Travelling abroad I am reminded how hospital people are and it is great to see the RN
Reciprocating.
