I recently went for a ride through a mountain for the first time and it was fucking awesome. However, it can be VERY dangerous. For me, I was having a little to much fun speeding through the twisties having the time of my life. I live in florida, so I dont have that much experience in the terrain like a mountain.
I remember there was this one turn, it was sharp, it was beautiful. I sped through this turn, and I didn't anticipate how strong the curve would be, I end up just riding on the yellow line, and as I am coming up on the yellow line there is a motorcycle group coming up, and I almost crash into them.
I was really embarrased, and I learned that day that above all else for mountain riding, take your time, do not rush it. Be SAFE. In my opinion it is far more dangerous than speeding in the rain or anything like that.
Sorry for the wall of text, I just really wanted to share my personal experience of not being safe during a mountain ride.
Also, identify gas stations that are within the mileage range of your bike. Riding up mountains will most likely reduce the average mpg range of your bike. I don't know how many times I've seen people with peanut tanks run out of gas in the middle of no where and then have the group stop to search for emergency gas. Pack a cheap gas siphon or tube with your tool kit.
Great tips. Living in Denver I spend a fair amount of time riding in the mountains. Just yesterday I rode over 350 miles on a whim. My intentions were just to escape the heat/city. Original plan was to ride about 45 miles up into the mountains then set up my hammock eat a sandwich and take a nap. I just kept going, about 7 hours later I made it home.
Was a great day of solo riding topping out at just over 12,000 feet in altitude.
Hi! When parking on a hill I would leave my bike in first gear. It works as a ''handbrake'' for most bikes. Also something like a strong rubber band or para cord tied around the front brake lever and throttle to lock the brake. Hahah.. stationary stopping power.
Hey dan!
Love the channel and love these “tip” videos!
Keep it up man!
Good tips man - on my way to a long mountain ride in Greece and your inputs are really appreciated. Keep it up!
Good tips and great videos Dan. Until today I never realized how close to my neck of the woods you are lol. Will have to keep my eye out for you when I'm in your area. My son just started riding this year and I have been giving him a lot of the same advice about riding in the hills. Anyway don't be surprised if I'm reaching over for a handshake one of these days. Take care and keep riding safe.
Good points there! Also do not underestimate the power loss you have in higher altitudes. It's about 10% per 1000m of elevation. Was very noticable for me in the alps the last weeks where you go past 2500m on regular roads and got inclines of 12% and more sometimes. Keep up the good work, greetings from Germany!
Lucky I live in SoCal. 10 mins away from Mt Baldy, I head up there all the time haha.
Thanks for posting this video! I’m about to head up Mt. Lemmon for the first time on my FZ 07. My wife wanted to go with but since it’s my first time I wanted to get a couple of rides in up there to get used to the road. I grew up riding dirt bikes and have only had a street bike for a couple months and I have found all of your videos very helpful!
While we have lots of twisties and hills with very high grades in the Driftless Region here in the Midwest, riding a constant uphill grade in the mountains seems a bit challenging. Using predominantly the rear brake on the uphill and the front on the downhill is great advice. This will be helpful going through nother AZ my Route 66 trip in September. Thanks!
It is good to you on Mt.Lemon Great video. That is a fun ride and July 4th was a great day to be up there. I also enjoyed seeing your appearance on MCRider!
Closest thing we have to “mountains” is Shenandoah. Hoping to make it my first big trip, maybe next spring. Thanks again for the great advice
Nice, nice. But more in-depth tips would be appreciated, like cornering, proper lane position for the conditions, obstacle avoidance AT SPEED (like the rocks you mentioned), etc. Keep up the good work!
Thanks for this video! I am taking my basic rider class soon and have been wondering how to safely drive through the mountains that I live near. One concern I have is when going uphill at a steep grade, any advice on how to navigate this?
I was just up there today and for a first time it was pretty intense
I was there last weekend, it was nice. There was a crap Tonne of traffic though.
Good tips! What kind of bike do you have?
Dan - I live in Rio Rico. Never toured up a mountain. When is the next time you plant to go? I like to camp at Spencer Canyon.
How do you record your audio and visual for your motovlogging?
Applying too much front brake going down a hill can cause a high side crash. Best is to just use low gear with both brakes. That way you use all 3 brakes. Am I wrong?
Dan, JC from Holland here, I wonder if you can do a video about street bikes in the mud. I ride a kawasaki dominar 373 CC in the Philippines and there is a lot of mud, pot holes and flooded streets and I wonder if I am doing my steering right when it gets slippery. Needless to say I fell down once.... *grin*.....
It'll be nice to take a monthly trip up mountains
What's your tank bag as well?
Arizona is gorgeous as feck.
Whenever I get down to AZ, I'd love to ride with you. Screw seeing my brother. Lol
Great tips, Mt Lemmon is a heaven compared to Tucson's heat.
Frank Hell yeah it is. I was there last weekend, it was in the mid 60's on top and Tucson was 102.
what bike do you have?
Dan. I don't know exactly how this works, but I was the first to like this vid, and yet I am now watching it again 3 hours later. (Kids bugged me earlier) and I was able to Like the video again. Just because I can. Lol. Question is, how does that work?
Joe Milich you win a coockie
GANGSTA MAC27 chocolate chip please.
suppp big D
This is a better view anyway
👍
riders die in the north cascades all the time where i live trying to speed through the highway they dont know
Bobber mirrors look so unsafe, and counter intuitive. You cannot see what's on your right, and you have to keep ducking to see what's on your left.
It's funny you call that a mountain.
Damn, I really miss the old DDFM vids where you actually learned stuff, instead of his constant cringy livestreams where he acts like a pathetic clown. Yo Dan! Did you forget how to ride??
"Mountains" lol, that's cute
First. Boom.
