Sorry, but Tobias Sammet is the greatest of all. The Metal Operas from Avantasia are the best musical stories of all time. And he still did Edguy and other Avantasia masterpieces. And you really should listen to Angra's tematic album called Temple of Shadows. One of the best metal stories of all as well. But White Pearl saga is one of them for sure. Glad that the Lighthouse keeper survived and his love, but still a sad story with the distance between them.

its kind of epic in the way that the ending to this epic tale would be ironic in a sense as well. in part one he had fallen in love and when he was left with a broken heart from her leaving and then he thought she had died on the boat that had crashed because he was unable to be the keeper of the light at thr time. So he ends up trying to kill himself which was his way of trying to apologize for all the lives he had caused to die. Then the fact that he ended up living is almost like the souls of the most forgiving him and the ocean gave back by sparing him and for a time taking away the memories of the incident. Then she ends up living and wanting to stay away from town because of what happened making her just like him. And his love for her ended up guiding him to her again. The only other person that would understand how she felt. a beautiful ending.

I agree completely. Dueling 16th note solo parts between guitar and keyboards hasn't really been a feature in their albums since Reckoning Night, and in this case it does seem particularly reminiscent of the last set of solos from The Power of One, and I'll try to word it here objectively; I think it's entirely due to Henrik's rhythmic patterns: 16th notes for two measures, followed by two measures half and quarter note combinations, which is the same exact way he approached his solo parts in The Power of One.

    • @stunningcactus978

Perfectly beautiful masterpiece. One of the most theatrical, awe-inspiring songs they've ever made; right up there with Larger Than Life (and White Pearl, Black Oceans pt. 1, obviously). I was excited and anxious when I saw they were going to make a sequel due to the end of part one, but my anxiety is completely gone and I'm still excited to continue to listen to this song over and over. I'm only left with one question in regards to the lyrics: Near the end of the song when he says "A New Face," is that referring to the unborn child from the first song? It would make sense, being that "The beauty" is the woman and "The brand new me" is also a reference from part 1, referring to the protagonist, and there is a mention of her being pregnant in part one that isn't addressed anywhere else in this one. Not sure if anyone else is thinking the same thing or if that's just a stretch, but comment to let me know.

    • @PredicateWinning

Changing is like gamble. You wouldn't sure what will it become and might be in fear for failing.

I am a bit torn about this song.
On it's own, a great composition, and an awesome chorus truly built to show what Tony's voice is made of. The speedy part itself is nice as well, and the lyrics make you think, especially for one who knows the story of the first part.
But it simply doesn't feel as one whole, the transitions between the different parts just don't work right for me, and the song might do better if it ended out from the last chorus at 8:25 or so.
I guess I would not sound such a critic if Sonata Arctica didn't name
this song White Pearl, Black Oceans. The first part was an absolute
masterpiece, in melodies, lyrics, pacing, changes of pace, you name it,
you had it there spot on.
It is just my opinion, but for me, the song is good, very good, but makes me wonder, what could have been ...

      This song would've been great had it been about something else. The beauty in "White Pearl, Black Oceans" was that it ended in tragedy and the emotions were so deep and relatable that you felt sad when the man eventually jumps off the lighthouse and dies. This literally throws all of that away and gives us a decent happy ending. I also miss that amazing spine tingling chorus ;-;

For me they are dead anyway. I’m really, really sorry for them and my heart’s bleeding when I’m thinking about the story from part I, but I love the story as it was, with this cruelly sad ending, and I see that some people agree with me. But part II is a nice song too and I want to accept it in some way. Someone wrote in comments that it’s their life in heaven or purgatory, and it seems to be quite good interpretation, although I think it’s just protagonist’s vision and dreams, when he dies in waves of the ocean. A few quotes match:
“The music of my chosen gentle tide Turned into a story on the other side (…) "We are alive"” - this “other side” makes me think it’s not reality independently from the rest of interpretation
“All onboard for the very last time Close your eyes, oh calamity (…) See myself in a dream” - it’s only my thought, but it reminds me the final scene of Titanic, when Rose imagine the board where everything’s good and there was no calamity
“There was a lady who was saved from the ocean Without a name to tell” - the line right after the one about dream; it sounds like its description or beginning of fairy tale (“there was”, no name)
“And the joy we knew is still alive, trees so green”, “Gallop across the moorlands” - well, these green trees and horse also sounds too unrealistically, like symbolic motifs
“Music of the seven gentle tides Fade in distance”, “Memories; I used to have a home in the light But the meaning's still escaping me” - a sign that he’s actually dying, and the facts lose their meaning, the most important is what he sees at this moment. Although beside the ideal dreams there is still guiltiness, which appears in some lines.
OK, you can say that’s an interpretation of desperate person because there are elements that suggest I’m wrong, but, damn, it would be a good solution. It doesn’t ruin the tragic beauty of part I, but at the same time adds to the ending some warmth, a kind of hope.

What? Isn't this the general idea? Why????
I mean if the "solution" was anything else but this it would make the song just a Disney sequel. Absolutely contradicting the meaning of the first part and taking away it's wholeness and just using nostalgia for effect.
As I read the lyrics I didn't even think it could mean anything else.

I didnt quite like this happy ending too. Because its not the Sonata that i have come to love. ( But sometimes, happiness is what we need ^^)
      BUT
I think they are alive. First because of " The darkest sea, Refusing me" The sea didnt want him. If he had died, the sea would have "accepted" him
Second "Slowly healing for a fortnight"
And "every night adds colors to the memory" he is starting to remember sometings..
"lady saved from the ocean" i think this is literally saved. She doesnt remember, feel afraid and leave..
"banish by my townsmen" he also leaves the town
"a new face, the beauty.." a new face is probably the child
Finally "we are alive" i think its also literally.
I like these song interpretations. Cheers guys

Sonata usually hasnt done well with happy endings in my book. "love" from the last album for instance. But this is good.

    • @kossakken
      @kossakken Před 7 lety +1

Tony has previously stated, when being asked about why all their songs end in tragedy, something along the lines of "happy endings don't make good stories". "Love" was sort of an exception to the rule of not making happy songs, and I've read somewhere that this song was made due to popular demand.I have to say though, I do really like this one.

At first I thought the melody of the first line of the 'chorus' in this song was a rehash of the main melody in When the Wild Wind Blows (Iron Maiden), but then I realised that both of them are actually Auld Lang Syne :') This is an awesome song, though, I'm so happy Tony's inspiration appears to have returned :D

No me canso de escucharla y eso que dura 10 putos minutos, que con cualquier otra canción estaría tirándome de los pelos porque dura mucho pero ESTA, esta no quiero que acabe nunca xdxd Me encanta. :`)

If there's one thing I do not generaly like about the sequel / part 2 type of songs is that they, most of the time, take away from the meaning of the original, slightly changing the meaning of the story and the events occurred or their endings. I have mixed feelings about this song; while it sounds great as all Sonata's songs, I can't think of anything which potentially follows-up in the characters' plots from the first WPBO.
