I wouldn't quite write it off yet. The article says the Codex Supplement has 18 datasheets, and we currently have 19 in the Index. Presumably the footslogging DC units are getting merged into one datasheet, which would count for the one lost. While it does seem optimistic that -nothing- is getting completely squatted, I don't see the DC Dread being retired without the Librarian and Furioso Dreads going with it, and I don't see -those- getting axed before the Tychos, Corbulo, and Seth. So even if the DC Dread and Furioso are just swaps for the Brutalis, that's up to 5 completely new datasheets they'd need to make 18 in our codex.
really wishing I didnt just drop 1k on legion mini's. Really thought any new BA units would be equally as unique, and not so cookie cutter. Wish I had that grand back to stock up on old BA kits instead.

Slightly disappointed by the lack of drip in the upgrade sprue, no gold death masks for officers, no unique shoulder pads etc considering the Blood Angels are the "art" guys, you'd think their weapons and armour would be more unique. Lemartes is definitely the standout.
10 fisty bois with hand flamers were the MVP in my first Blood Angels game. Too good for this world. I'll have to figure out a new allstar jump pack unit.

Fine by me, honestly. I had my fun with it, and I knew it wasn't long for this world. Hell, I used unpainted half-proxies for them, so I canconvert them into Raptors for my budding chaos army.
@@tadhgmcelligott3693 I have to disagree they did it with Van Vets (even though they haven't gone to primaris yet), assault jump units, sang guard, basically all the first born load outs have been simplified in 10th. The DC are just the next ones in line.
The feeling I get from this box is that I don't have the modeling skills to make 5 jump intercessor variant bodies into a whole goddamn army and it not all look the bloody same
@@stevenbolton1244 Theres literally no way to make an interesting varied army with any of the new upgrade sprues they have going. Look at the Terminator bits. Thats the same chest and helmet and only 1x in the upgrade kit. So what are you gonna do? Have a squad of BA terminators with all the same chest and helmets lmao? GW thinks their clever with these minimalist upgrade sprues but they really are worthless. Even the Night Lords one that got massively hyped tbh was only half decent.
Etsy is your friend. I don’t have a 3D printer, but there are tons of spruse (spelling?) torsos, legs and helmets. You have tweak as you please, but price is obviously a factor
@@mikev8746 yeah I for one look to Cults for great BA terminator upgrades in modern scale, they look amazing and there’s heaps. If you know someone with a printer, you can probably kit out 2x 10 terminators with bling for around 5-10€ depending on the price of the STL

The new Lemartes looks like a firstborn midget space marine, almost like a leagues of votann dude cosplaying as a space marine. Looks like trash in my eyes
he has the primaris knee thingy and the jetpack, for now they will erase all the firstborn stuff, maybe in 20 or 40 years they will bring them back to refresh the line and sell all the models all over again but with the updated height
you know if you blur your eyes, they just look like death watch, which is probably why death watch just got shafted into the back of the recycled iquisitor sets.
What I'm most curious about is their hinting at "a lot more red, and a little bit of gold" in the article. The little bit of gold obviously refers to either the sanguinor, sanguinary guard, or both. The "lot of red" is very curious, especially if the number of datasheets isn't going up. I could *maybe* see something like Blood Angels Assault terminators get a refresh, maybe a Baal Gladiator, but i can't think of much else, other than those.
I was wondering the same thing. I am guessing that we are maybe going to get a Sanguinary Priest on foot, a Sanguinary Priest w/ Jump Pack, and maybe a Chaplain w/ Jump Pack?
@phufflebun it seems strange to tease 1-3 hq's with "a lot of red" if a whole unit of guard and sanguinor = "a little bit of gold" but you may be right. Personally, I don't really think the jump chaplain or Sang priest particularly need a new mini, the Chaplain in particular is gorgeous, and doesn't really feel firstborn being up on a particularly tall tactical rock.
@@BrandonL337 That's a good point about the wording. I just looked at the jump chaplain and you are right, it is gorgeous. I think the Sang priest is hideous and needs a swift makeover, however. Valrak also said there was a new captain coming, but that still doesn't feel like "a lot of red" as you said. Assault terminators would be amazing, I hope you are right.
@phufflebun the real question is would BA assault termies be coming *ahead* of generic assault terminators? Or both at the same time? Both possibilities seem unusual for GW, though I suppose you could argue that Black Templars kinda sorta got new scouts ahead of everyone else.
I already have 10 DC w/ JP. As fun as a full DC list may be, once they've sold enough kits there will be a points or rules chnage that leaves half of this box gathering dust.
With the heavy emphasis on Death Company, I'm hoping that the new codex will include a Death Company themed detachment. If Death Company Intercessors get the battleline keyword in a new detatchment, then for 75 points they are directly competing with Assault Intercessors, with the same potential OC. Obviously, Assault Intercessors are fantastic chaff that gets wound re-rolls, and can beef up a character like a Captain, but if the points remain 75 for each, Death Company Intercessors get built in re-roll hits and a 6+++ FNP. If their leaders change, such as getting a Lieutenant type to attach, then those built in hit re-rolls really shines, a wonderful way to focus an off-objective or non-oathed target. Then add on to all of that they get free stratagems with Fire Overwatch and Heroic Intervention. Something positive to think about, despite the probably major loss of our DC firstborn loadouts. We'll see what happens, cheers!
@@Flyinpenguin117 some of these detachments we've seen in other codexes are on the narrative side-- not really bangers that get you excited. But I am very interested to see how we get to play them, powerful or not.
I feel like the Black Templars crusader and sword brethren were done right. Lots of unique heraldry etc. The death company in this box seem like a stop gap, with only a small upgrade sprue. Was expecting something similar to what Black Templars got, but at least the characters are cool

The heroes are nice, but it's only the codex I really want, I have jump pack DC primaris, I have a brutalis. The upgrade sprue is disappointing. Was hoping for unique looking sword blade or chest pieces. Not stuff with barely visible blood drops and bare heads I'll never use
Well, we all new the nerf was coming. Now it's just etched in blood. Oh, and John, what do you think of the thought that Dante's card says 'Assault Squad with Jump Packs'? Too blurry for me to read, but I kept saying we *should* get a VanVet upgrade. I think I'm biased by wanting to be right :P
@@ba_commander Because it doesn't seem to say Assault Intercessors with Jump Packs, but rather Assault Squad with Jump Packs. That doesn't exist at the moment... EDIT: Actually, your pic in the vid is better quality and it definitely says ASSAULT SQUAD WITH JUMP PACKS, SANGUINARY GUARD, and VANGUARD VETERANS. Assault Squad appears to be a new datacard for Blood Angels - unless I'm missing something major.
The only thing in this box that I'd want is Astorath. Nothing else is tempting. I thankfully dropped 10e like a bad habit so I don't even need the book. Feels amazing.
@@ba_commander We discussed it but I don't blame you for not remembering. I think 10e is a bust. Not every part of it is bad and I wouldn't call it the worst edition but I think they went entirely the wrong direction with it from 9e. Not being stuck following every GW release is the best decision in my 40k hobby I've made.
The "we have death company at home" box. If they all have chainswords they need ridiculous rules or there's no point paying nearly double the price of JAI. I'll await to see what are rules an datasheets say before I poopoo losing all infernos and powerfists. See the synergies as a whole with all our units. ...Of course I'm still going to buy this box 😂
The Warhammer 40K Space Marines Sternguard Veteran Squad makes great a conversion into Death Company Marines they have a lot more heraldry than the current tactical squad
As someone who still has very few Death Company (5 on foot and ten jump, plus the old DC Dread), this box is perfect! I was waiting because people kept saying that they were going to change in the codex and i am so stoked for this box.
Beasts of Amareo would have been a cool mini for them to make. But I get the impression they don't want to make new minis very much. "Assault Intercessors, but black," honestly kind of IS what Death Company are until they go full beast, so I don't really find much fault with the upgrade sprue approach in that regard. It's a bit sad that we don't get more... well... MORE. But I feel like their resources might be spread too thin at the moment, sculpting new models for Old World, Age of Sigmar, 40k, Kill Team, Necromunda, Horus Heresy, AND Blood Bowl. So far, we got TWO new character scultps instead of one, and that's more than the Necron got. I am excited for this box, regardless of the "what could or couldn't be and what should or shouldn't be"s of it. But I do think Games Workshop needs to pay attention to the feedback they're getting from disappointed collectors, because I'm seeing it becoming a more common phenomenon.
The GW entry of saying there will be 18 datasheets is interesting. I assume that they will get rid of both regular Tycho and DC Tycho. Assuming DC Tycho would not Primarised, he'd be the only DC firstborn. After that I figure they will keep all the current unique BA units except the old DC Dreadnought. With the DC infantry, I guess they will have the Assault and Jump DC units so that they can be battleline in the DC detachment. The remaining DC infantry spot might "fingers crossed" be a new DC Veterans units which might be the where all the power fists, thunder hammers, etc go.
So I was thinking about this myself the other day, and this is what I came up with, let me know if I'm off the rails anywhere here. We currently have 19 datasheets. The new datasheet cards include 18 datasheets. Like the Dark Angels, I'm going to assume that this includes the datasheets for the Combat Patrol (maybe a new one). So... that would be 5 datasheets there, or maybe more or less if they're for a theoretical new Combat Patrol. Of the 19 datasheets we've got... let me copy and paste here... Things I'd wager are here to stay: - Astorath, I mean, obviously - Mephiston - Dante - Lemartes, clearly - Sanguinary Priest - The Sanguinor - Death Company x 2 (Death Company Intercessors and Death Company Marines are combined into one Death Company Marines datasheet, Assault Intercessors with Jump Packs are now able to be run as Death Company Marines with Jump Packs) - Sanguinary Guard Things that are a little bit more ???: - Captain Tycho... dude's been dead for years he is Legends-ready - Tycho the Lost... same guy - Brother Corbulo... he's really important in the lore as the head of the Sanguinary Priests, but never really does anything? And he hasn't had an updated model in approximately 100,000 years. - Gabriel Seth... it would hurt a lot, but this is extremely possible. He has no model currently in production and never crossed the Rubicon Primaris, because he didn't want to be, as he put it, a "red Ultramarine" - Sanguinary Priest with Jump Pack... there isn't one. The only reason this datasheet might go and the other Sanguinary Priest datasheet might stay is because... there is no model for Sanguinary Priest with Jump Pack. You have to convert your own. So there'll either be a new model for this guy, they'll get rid of him... or things will stay as they are. - The Baal Predator... I think it's going away. But it really could go either way. - The Furioso Dreads (Death Company Dreadnought, Librarian Dreadnought, Furioso Dreadnough)... these are the ones everyone is worried about. Of all the units likely to go legends, these are the best and also most iconic. Even so... I think it's more likely than it is unlikely, and the Brutalis in the Death Company box is damn near confirmation of the fact. So... I figured on 9 keepers at least. Add 5 for the Combat Patrol, we're at 14. That means 4 datasheets that will either be new or one of the above that aren't going away (Baal Predator? Furioso Dreads? Jump Priest?).
A new subscriber here! I love your videos and I love the personality you have in these videos! Just a small hobby tip for EVERYONE, please (I beg of you) get the old Death Company Space Marines box, maybe even 2 boxes. A lot of their parts are exchangeable with the primaris sprue, same deal with company veterans for DA, and the value in those boxes are only going to skyrocket in all regards (Proxying, kitbashes, monetary value, etc.) I just wish the old death company were in this box to justify it's probably insane price tag, but I really can't wait for this box to come out.
I'm kinda glad I held off building all my DC stuff, because I think now the plan is to use all the firstborn DC bits to convert the guys from this box into something with a lot more style. I might even mix some heresy stuff in there. Already have a built Brutalis so depending on how good the datasheet is I'll probably sell the one in the box.
Just bought two boxes of the old death company marines as per your comment on how specialized they are compared to death company intercessors. Not loving the overly simplified models when it comes to details on the armor even if they come with better proportions. Also gotta point out that Astorath is going to get wings while the sanguinary guard are going to lose their signature wings. Astorath is dealing with a two handed weapon just fine in his pose and the wings look even easier to build when they are coming out of the jump pack like that. Sanguinary guard new model release is going to be crucial to the success of this launch, I hope they find a way to keep their wings. Looking forward to the Codex rules and detachments, especially if they grant the dreadnoughts some cool rules. I would love if some melee identity separation could occur from the new codex as like in 9th. VV compared to DC compared to SG felt like they did different things. To me at least, is seems like Str 10/-2/2D is blending our roster together and its just a cosmetic or delivery choice that you pick.
@@ProjectKRAKEN the “loss of wings” problem isn’t a problem until we see models of Sanguinary Guard without wings. Until that happens, it’s just a rumour
I really hope we don't lose all our awesome dreadnoughts - Furioso, Death Company, and Librarian dreadnoughts are one of the really cool features of our army. Same with Baal Predators. I am also hopeful that there will be more flexibility with primaris death company loadouts than we currently have, where only 1 in every 5 can have a different pistol or melee weapon. I've always built armies by rule of cool rather than the meta, so my jump-pack death company have all sorts of combinations of swords, hammers, fists, and chainswords, with a mix of plasma, inferno and bolt pistols, so it'd be nice if I can still field them in the new codex.
Grey Tide Studios are going to be releasing what looks to be amazing BA 3D bits - I got the DA one and they were fantastic. Hope this will help rescue the boring lack of unique new sculpts.
Archie’s Forge did prints from the STLs that you could buy from their past campaigns (Dark Angels and Space Wolves) who I think is UK based. If you have your own 3D printer you can just buy the digital files and print as many as you like. That’s what I did and they came out fantastic. I think GreyTide also offered physical packs. Release is scheduled for September I believe

The new character models look great. I play Deathwatch, but I always look out for the Chapter upgrade sprues to dress my models with heraldry from their parent Chapters. I look forward to picking that up specifically.
I am really excited for this Blood Angels DC release. You get a total of four upgrade sprues, and each one has a total of twenty five shoulder pads. That’s one hundred shoulder pads.
New lemartes goes so hard. Btw those jumppack intercessors are $60 for 5. So you're at $180 for just the infantry. This box is going to retail for $230 or $240
I am going to try to get my hands on one of those boxes, i was planning to buy a brutalis dreadnought and some jump intercessors so I don't feel relucant to buy it. I do understand that people who already have a bunch of intercessors already and this box feels like nothing special besides the characters and the eviscirator sprue that they dangle in front of you.
Being relatively new to the hobby, (only playing for a year) i am definitely picking thie up as i havent yet explored the death company part of the chapter. All new units to me
As for the issue with no power fists or thunder hammers or inferno pistols, we can always proxy as long as DC still get the option to take any melee weapon and pistol
I feel good that I didn’t buy the jump intercessors plus 4 upgrade sprews is a fuck load of shoulders and heads I need to buy this next week I’m going start pestering my local game store to see if they can hold one back for me I love this box so much. You get 4 of the upgrade sorews in the box also they buffed Dante’s axe in this so I’m going to guess DC is going to get buffs in strength.
The ornaments on the armor made the Death Company look like they were respected warriors dressed for their funeral with honors. This upgrade sprue makes them look like they are simply tagged for disposal.
the only problem is when you have all of the old stuff, like 3 DC dread, 30 DC, what you should do? but more 3 dread for our Great GW brain? ha.... but I do like the setting, one limited codex, data card, and some "NEW" model which only two new character. It is good for everyone to start BA.

I need the jump assault ints and brutalis, plus the characters, so I'll definitely be picking up the box if I can get my hands on it. I love both the new characters, and will probably use this as an excuse to buy that 3D printer for more interesting bits to slap on the DC.
I'm 50/50 on whether or not I'll buy the box. I've been holding out on Astorath and Lemartes for new models, so I want them. I haven't bought any Jump Pack Intercessors yet and my current DC Marines are magnetized so I can change them to legal loadouts and pain the JPI red. Those plus the Codex and upgrade sprues will probably be the cost of the box in USD. But I'm not exactly thirsting for Death Company Intercessors or another Brutalis Dreadnought, and am too lazy to hawk stuff on eBay. I guess I'll see what our datasheets look like, if DC Intercessors are worth running and they don't squat the Libby Dread then I might spring for it. Also I noticed we have the same Secret Lab chair

from the perspective of someone who is just starting a Blood Angels/SM army, this is probably a pretty good box. For me, I already have everything in this box (other than Lemart/Ath). There isn't a reason for me to get this box. I'm disappointed, because I wanted new BA stuff. I'll just buy Lemart separate.
It seems pretty obvious that the Death Company Intercessors (jump pack ones included) will have Inferno pistol added to "1 model's heavy bolt pistol can be replaced with one if the following:" and the eviscerator will be added to the "1 model can replace it's bolt rifle or astartes chainsword with one of the following:). Hopefully thier rules/abilities are good as otherwise they are going to be ignored for standard jump pack intercessors.
@@nathanthom8176 we also know that at least our intercessor sergeants can take inferno pistols. I hope this extends to our JAI sergeants as well since nobody uses Intercessors
There's a part of me that wants to buy this box. I have a pretty significant Blood Angels army that I've collected over many years, which includes the old Lemartes and Astorath models, but I really do like these newer sculpts of the characters. I have a bunch of assault intercessors already, but another 10 wouldn't be the worst thing. I don't have that new dreadnought or any jump assault intercessors yet. As much as that upgrade sprue looks relatively disappointing, it does have some nice looking shoulder pads and bits which would be nice for some relatively easy conversions. That artwork on the box looks awesome. And some more transfers never hurt. Then I realize that I still have a pretty big pile of shame, and I've been working on models for other wargames instead of 40k for the last couple of years, as I really detest the new rules. I didn't like 9th, and from what I've seen, 10th leans into the issues I have with 9th. This box would likely sit in my pile of shame for years..... IF I was to buy this box, it would be because I think the box art and models look awesome enough that I want to paint them up and put them on the shelf along with the rest of my army. And while these are cool models, they aren't quite cool enough for me to jump at this as enthusiastically as I thought I would when I first read some rumors that something like this was coming.
I wonder if we might get some other sheets we aren't expecting because I wouldn't be surprised if both versions of Tycho are removed. Finecast model with nothing to go with. The Jump pack Sanguinary Priest would be likely to go since there is no model for it. Maybe we can get Death Company captains and/or lieutenants back. Maybe there will be another box with the predicted new Sang Guard and a new Sang priest.
I have a billion Assault Intercessors. I actually used Reivers with assault intercessors arms for my existing Death Company Intercessors. DC Intercessors are the same price as Assault Intercessors so they aren't exactly expensive but I get they don't get any play because it just doesn't click yet. I bought a bunch of DC boxes so I can have a bunch of shoulder pads and helmets. If any of my local stores get any more stock of them I'll grab a couple more. The price per bit ratio works out better than these upgrade sprues.
I'm actually pretty happy with the new box. I still only have the old metal Lemartes and while I love the old chap, I'm excited for the new one. It's by far my highlight in this box ^^ The new Astorath reminds me of Mephistons "new" model because it is an upscaled model while keeping the flair of the old miniature and it looks perfect. Finally no more finecast xD I've skipped the Brutalis when it came out so this is ideal timing for me. And while I'm sad that the DC marines are probably losing a lot of weapon options I'm still reluctant to judge them too soon. We'll have to wait for the datasheet and points costs. Maybe they get a cool rule, maybe they are cheaper, maybe Lemartes and Astorath get new rules that make our DC great. We'll see soon enough. The upgrade sprue looks a tad disappointing but considering our current primaris upgrade sprue the new one is a huge bonus. That said, I love the old models with the customizability and am sad to see them leave. On the other hand, and this is purely my opinion, it was a chore to paint every detail on the 25 or 30 DC marines that I have and I didn't really enjoy painting them. All in all this reveal could have been better but I'm still hyped and can't wait to see the new Sanguinary Guard and Sanguinor models and anything else they might have in their back pocket ^^
I don't even like the "Lemartes." It's not a bad DC Chaplain by itself but I don't like the head and its not a good replacement for the awesome current Lemartes.
A bit sad that we didn’t get any inferno pistols, Thammers, claws, or really anything for the Death company marines in this box. Part of what makes DCompany cool for me is that you can give them solid gear and they can’t retreat, meaning your opponent has to focus on them or they could have some serious AP or high strength weapons in their back field due to the high mobility they have. These guys will probably be solid but not really anything too flexible like their first born counterparts.
Like you John, I'm glad I have first born death company sprue bits and bobs to enhance things with. I'm still excited overall for this box! I suppose you could look at these DC sculpts being less ornate as due to the losses to the Tyranid hive fleet Leviathan attack. I read the books and NO Death company survived the battle. I think Astorath and Lemartes survived b/c they were on some other mission somewhere.
Have to agree, whilst the new Lemartes and Astorath look incredible, the lack of options and heraldry on everthing else is concerning. The 'new' DC units feel lazy as just the standard kit with an upgrade sprue like the current intercessor kits and seems to confirm the standard primaris rule of 1 special upgrade per 5 models. The dread being a basic brutalis kit is also a big shame. Low effort compared to Dark Angels and Black Templars releases imo, but a mix of fomo and ooh shiny means i will most likely still buy.
So not very happy with losing the OG Death Company. Lemartes looks amazing to me and will get him for sure. Looking at the pricing for the US, I would expect to see a price tag of around $295. Total on GW site for what's in there is $492.50 so 40% off would bring it down to the $295 price. I don't use the Datasheet cards and don't need the on foot Intercessors. Boy it would be hard to swallow at that price...
Great content John as usual. I could see them doing away with captain Tycho data sheet since he is long dead in lore. Super excited for this box just for the basis of new models! I hope some new data sheet for one of the characters gives a free CP every turn like Azrael does for the Dark Angels. I want to be forced to use the epic characters but i dont at the moment.
So, look, im relatively new in the hobby, i might have 5 years in this. I started with Primaris, I understand the aprehension but i cant fail to be excited with the new releases because aesthetically i like Astorath and Lemartes and I do like how Primaris look. Maybe theyll be good, or maybe not, but to me is how the look of the army determines what i collect, bot necessarily if they're great on the table.

Not to be rude but I think ur forgetting that is says you get 4 of the upgrade sprue’s in the box, and the regular intercessor DC means/makes it much easier to make a full DC army. So with this in mind I think it’s fine, also this could just be me but the stuff in sprue is high quality (faces) and makes it easier to balance the DC. Finally when I go to get an upgrade sprue I really only need some transfers or shoulder pads and u get a lot in it. Sorry if it sounded rude but I think it’s fine, and sorry for the long comment.
I share most of your views John. Suspect this is just another way of making us red Ultramarines. (Seth was right dammit!) Also I think you forgot the asssult Intercessors come as a box of 10 so I don’t think the saving will be as good as you’ve calculated! Only Astorath and the upgrade sprues that interest me and I don’t think I can justify the box just for those.
There a quite a few folks out there that make 3d prints of DC shoulders and BA stuff. Just going to have to go that way to get uniqueness. But if DC on foot is a thing I have alot of DC power packs for foot folks.
I don't think the new Lemartes necessarily needs to have crossed the Rubicon, he could just be wearing newer armour, with his model upscaled to primaris scale, similar to the Black Templars Castellan, or Castellan Crowe for the Grey Knights, who has firstborn armour, but is as tall as a primaris marine despite clearly not being primaris. Nowadays the scale of the model doesn't really indicate whether the marine inside the armour is primaris.
@@ba_commander I could totally be wrong and they end up putting out a novel or a paragraph in the codex about him undergoing the primaris operation, but yeah it seems like GW doesn't have as much of a strict primaris size = primaris marine rule anymore.

I wouldn't quite write it off yet. The article says the Codex Supplement has 18 datasheets, and we currently have 19 in the Index. Presumably the footslogging DC units are getting merged into one datasheet, which would count for the one lost. While it does seem optimistic that -nothing- is getting completely squatted, I don't see the DC Dread being retired without the Librarian and Furioso Dreads going with it, and I don't see -those- getting axed before the Tychos, Corbulo, and Seth. So even if the DC Dread and Furioso are just swaps for the Brutalis, that's up to 5 completely new datasheets they'd need to make 18 in our codex.

really wishing I didnt just drop 1k on legion mini's. Really thought any new BA units would be equally as unique, and not so cookie cutter. Wish I had that grand back to stock up on old BA kits instead.

Slightly disappointed by the lack of drip in the upgrade sprue, no gold death masks for officers, no unique shoulder pads etc considering the Blood Angels are the "art" guys, you'd think their weapons and armour would be more unique.
Lemartes is definitely the standout.

The feeling I get from this box is that I don't have the modeling skills to make 5 jump intercessor variant bodies into a whole goddamn army and it not all look the bloody same

Thats the same chest and helmet and only 1x in the upgrade kit. So what are you gonna do? Have a squad of BA terminators with all the same chest and helmets lmao?
GW thinks their clever with these minimalist upgrade sprues but they really are worthless. Even the Night Lords one that got massively hyped tbh was only half decent.
Etsy is your friend. I don’t have a 3D printer, but there are tons of spruse (spelling?) torsos, legs and helmets. You have tweak as you please, but price is obviously a factor

There's no distinction anymore, GW does not even mention the word primaris in their latest article. They're just upscaled models.

What I'm most curious about is their hinting at "a lot more red, and a little bit of gold" in the article. The little bit of gold obviously refers to either the sanguinor, sanguinary guard, or both. The "lot of red" is very curious, especially if the number of datasheets isn't going up. I could *maybe* see something like Blood Angels Assault terminators get a refresh, maybe a Baal Gladiator, but i can't think of much else, other than those.
I was wondering the same thing. I am guessing that we are maybe going to get a Sanguinary Priest on foot, a Sanguinary Priest w/ Jump Pack, and maybe a Chaplain w/ Jump Pack?
@phufflebun it seems strange to tease 1-3 hq's with "a lot of red" if a whole unit of guard and sanguinor = "a little bit of gold" but you may be right.
Personally, I don't really think the jump chaplain or Sang priest particularly need a new mini, the Chaplain in particular is gorgeous, and doesn't really feel firstborn being up on a particularly tall tactical rock.
@@BrandonL337 That's a good point about the wording. I just looked at the jump chaplain and you are right, it is gorgeous. I think the Sang priest is hideous and needs a swift makeover, however. Valrak also said there was a new captain coming, but that still doesn't feel like "a lot of red" as you said. Assault terminators would be amazing, I hope you are right.
@phufflebun the real question is would BA assault termies be coming *ahead* of generic assault terminators? Or both at the same time? Both possibilities seem unusual for GW, though I suppose you could argue that Black Templars kinda sorta got new scouts ahead of everyone else.

I already have 10 DC w/ JP. As fun as a full DC list may be, once they've sold enough kits there will be a points or rules chnage that leaves half of this box gathering dust.

With the heavy emphasis on Death Company, I'm hoping that the new codex will include a Death Company themed detachment. If Death Company Intercessors get the battleline keyword in a new detatchment, then for 75 points they are directly competing with Assault Intercessors, with the same potential OC.
Obviously, Assault Intercessors are fantastic chaff that gets wound re-rolls, and can beef up a character like a Captain, but if the points remain 75 for each, Death Company Intercessors get built in re-roll hits and a 6+++ FNP. If their leaders change, such as getting a Lieutenant type to attach, then those built in hit re-rolls really shines, a wonderful way to focus an off-objective or non-oathed target. Then add on to all of that they get free stratagems with Fire Overwatch and Heroic Intervention.
Something positive to think about, despite the probably major loss of our DC firstborn loadouts. We'll see what happens, cheers!
I think it's a certainty that we'll get the DC detachment. The Dark Angels got one for their box.
Probably gonna be Sons of Sanguinius detachment, DC detachment, and Jump Packs Matter/Aerial Assault detachment.
@@Flyinpenguin117 some of these detachments we've seen in other codexes are on the narrative side-- not really bangers that get you excited. But I am very interested to see how we get to play them, powerful or not.
I feel like the Black Templars crusader and sword brethren were done right. Lots of unique heraldry etc. The death company in this box seem like a stop gap, with only a small upgrade sprue. Was expecting something similar to what Black Templars got, but at least the characters are cool

The heroes are nice, but it's only the codex I really want, I have jump pack DC primaris, I have a brutalis. The upgrade sprue is disappointing. Was hoping for unique looking sword blade or chest pieces. Not stuff with barely visible blood drops and bare heads I'll never use

Assault Squad appears to be a new datacard for Blood Angels - unless I'm missing something major.
The only thing in this box that I'd want is Astorath. Nothing else is tempting. I thankfully dropped 10e like a bad habit so I don't even need the book. Feels amazing.

Not every part of it is bad and I wouldn't call it the worst edition but I think they went entirely the wrong direction with it from 9e. Not being stuck following every GW release is the best decision in my 40k hobby I've made.
The "we have death company at home" box. If they all have chainswords they need ridiculous rules or there's no point paying nearly double the price of JAI. I'll await to see what are rules an datasheets say before I poopoo losing all infernos and powerfists. See the synergies as a whole with all our units.

The Warhammer 40K Space Marines Sternguard Veteran Squad makes great a conversion into Death Company Marines they have a lot more heraldry than the current tactical squad

As someone who still has very few Death Company (5 on foot and ten jump, plus the old DC Dread), this box is perfect! I was waiting because people kept saying that they were going to change in the codex and i am so stoked for this box.

Beasts of Amareo would have been a cool mini for them to make. But I get the impression they don't want to make new minis very much. "Assault Intercessors, but black," honestly kind of IS what Death Company are until they go full beast, so I don't really find much fault with the upgrade sprue approach in that regard. It's a bit sad that we don't get more... well... MORE. But I feel like their resources might be spread too thin at the moment, sculpting new models for Old World, Age of Sigmar, 40k, Kill Team, Necromunda, Horus Heresy, AND Blood Bowl. So far, we got TWO new character scultps instead of one, and that's more than the Necron got.
I am excited for this box, regardless of the "what could or couldn't be and what should or shouldn't be"s of it. But I do think Games Workshop needs to pay attention to the feedback they're getting from disappointed collectors, because I'm seeing it becoming a more common phenomenon.
The GW entry of saying there will be 18 datasheets is interesting. I assume that they will get rid of both regular Tycho and DC Tycho. Assuming DC Tycho would not Primarised, he'd be the only DC firstborn. After that I figure they will keep all the current unique BA units except the old DC Dreadnought. With the DC infantry, I guess they will have the Assault and Jump DC units so that they can be battleline in the DC detachment. The remaining DC infantry spot might "fingers crossed" be a new DC Veterans units which might be the where all the power fists, thunder hammers, etc go.
So I was thinking about this myself the other day, and this is what I came up with, let me know if I'm off the rails anywhere here.
We currently have 19 datasheets. The new datasheet cards include 18 datasheets. Like the Dark Angels, I'm going to assume that this includes the datasheets for the Combat Patrol (maybe a new one). So... that would be 5 datasheets there, or maybe more or less if they're for a theoretical new Combat Patrol.
Of the 19 datasheets we've got... let me copy and paste here...
Things I'd wager are here to stay:
- Astorath, I mean, obviously
- Mephiston
- Dante
- Lemartes, clearly
- Sanguinary Priest
- The Sanguinor
- Death Company x 2 (Death Company Intercessors and Death Company Marines are combined into one Death Company Marines datasheet, Assault Intercessors with Jump Packs are now able to be run as Death Company Marines with Jump Packs)
- Sanguinary Guard
Things that are a little bit more ???:
- Captain Tycho... dude's been dead for years he is Legends-ready
- Tycho the Lost... same guy
- Brother Corbulo... he's really important in the lore as the head of the Sanguinary Priests, but never really does anything? And he hasn't had an updated model in approximately 100,000 years.
- Gabriel Seth... it would hurt a lot, but this is extremely possible. He has no model currently in production and never crossed the Rubicon Primaris, because he didn't want to be, as he put it, a "red Ultramarine"
- Sanguinary Priest with Jump Pack... there isn't one. The only reason this datasheet might go and the other Sanguinary Priest datasheet might stay is because... there is no model for Sanguinary Priest with Jump Pack. You have to convert your own. So there'll either be a new model for this guy, they'll get rid of him... or things will stay as they are.
- The Baal Predator... I think it's going away. But it really could go either way.
- The Furioso Dreads (Death Company Dreadnought, Librarian Dreadnought, Furioso Dreadnough)... these are the ones everyone is worried about. Of all the units likely to go legends, these are the best and also most iconic. Even so... I think it's more likely than it is unlikely, and the Brutalis in the Death Company box is damn near confirmation of the fact.
So... I figured on 9 keepers at least. Add 5 for the Combat Patrol, we're at 14. That means 4 datasheets that will either be new or one of the above that aren't going away (Baal Predator? Furioso Dreads? Jump Priest?).
I guess GW is just gonna make us do our own upgrades. Popgoesthemonkey and others thanks for your support so we can spruce up our models.

Just a small hobby tip for EVERYONE, please (I beg of you) get the old Death Company Space Marines box, maybe even 2 boxes. A lot of their parts are exchangeable with the primaris sprue, same deal with company veterans for DA, and the value in those boxes are only going to skyrocket in all regards (Proxying, kitbashes, monetary value, etc.)
I just wish the old death company were in this box to justify it's probably insane price tag, but I really can't wait for this box to come out.

I'm kinda glad I held off building all my DC stuff, because I think now the plan is to use all the firstborn DC bits to convert the guys from this box into something with a lot more style. I might even mix some heresy stuff in there. Already have a built Brutalis so depending on how good the datasheet is I'll probably sell the one in the box.
I need to find my lost brutalist. It might be pretty fun playing two of them. I wonder if it’ll get a feel no pain.

Just bought two boxes of the old death company marines as per your comment on how specialized they are compared to death company intercessors. Not loving the overly simplified models when it comes to details on the armor even if they come with better proportions. Also gotta point out that Astorath is going to get wings while the sanguinary guard are going to lose their signature wings. Astorath is dealing with a two handed weapon just fine in his pose and the wings look even easier to build when they are coming out of the jump pack like that. Sanguinary guard new model release is going to be crucial to the success of this launch, I hope they find a way to keep their wings. Looking forward to the Codex rules and detachments, especially if they grant the dreadnoughts some cool rules. I would love if some melee identity separation could occur from the new codex as like in 9th. VV compared to DC compared to SG felt like they did different things. To me at least, is seems like Str 10/-2/2D is blending our roster together and its just a cosmetic or delivery choice that you pick.
I think if I had cash lying around I'd do the same, need to see what this box costs! I REALLY hope we don't loose the old DC parts.
@@ProjectKRAKEN the “loss of wings” problem isn’t a problem until we see models of Sanguinary Guard without wings. Until that happens, it’s just a rumour
I really hope we don't lose all our awesome dreadnoughts - Furioso, Death Company, and Librarian dreadnoughts are one of the really cool features of our army. Same with Baal Predators. I am also hopeful that there will be more flexibility with primaris death company loadouts than we currently have, where only 1 in every 5 can have a different pistol or melee weapon. I've always built armies by rule of cool rather than the meta, so my jump-pack death company have all sorts of combinations of swords, hammers, fists, and chainswords, with a mix of plasma, inferno and bolt pistols, so it'd be nice if I can still field them in the new codex.
Grey Tide Studios are going to be releasing what looks to be amazing BA 3D bits - I got the DA one and they were fantastic. Hope this will help rescue the boring lack of unique new sculpts.

Archie’s Forge did prints from the STLs that you could buy from their past campaigns (Dark Angels and Space Wolves) who I think is UK based. If you have your own 3D printer you can just buy the digital files and print as many as you like. That’s what I did and they came out fantastic. I think GreyTide also offered physical packs. Release is scheduled for September I believe

I play Deathwatch, but I always look out for the Chapter upgrade sprues to dress my models with heraldry from their parent Chapters. I look forward to picking that up specifically.
I am really excited for this Blood Angels DC release. You get a total of four upgrade sprues, and each one has a total of twenty five shoulder pads. That’s one hundred shoulder pads.
Now if only we’ve got a couple of cool death companies shoulder pads this box could’ve been perfect…

I am going to try to get my hands on one of those boxes, i was planning to buy a brutalis dreadnought and some jump intercessors so I don't feel relucant to buy it. I do understand that people who already have a bunch of intercessors already and this box feels like nothing special besides the characters and the eviscirator sprue that they dangle in front of you.
Being relatively new to the hobby, (only playing for a year) i am definitely picking thie up as i havent yet explored the death company part of the chapter. All new units to me

The ornaments on the armor made the Death Company look like they were respected warriors dressed for their funeral with honors. This upgrade sprue makes them look like they are simply tagged for disposal.

I need the jump assault ints and brutalis, plus the characters, so I'll definitely be picking up the box if I can get my hands on it. I love both the new characters, and will probably use this as an excuse to buy that 3D printer for more interesting bits to slap on the DC.
I'm 50/50 on whether or not I'll buy the box. I've been holding out on Astorath and Lemartes for new models, so I want them. I haven't bought any Jump Pack Intercessors yet and my current DC Marines are magnetized so I can change them to legal loadouts and pain the JPI red. Those plus the Codex and upgrade sprues will probably be the cost of the box in USD. But I'm not exactly thirsting for Death Company Intercessors or another Brutalis Dreadnought, and am too lazy to hawk stuff on eBay. I guess I'll see what our datasheets look like, if DC Intercessors are worth running and they don't squat the Libby Dread then I might spring for it.

For me, I already have everything in this box (other than Lemart/Ath). There isn't a reason for me to get this box. I'm disappointed, because I wanted new BA stuff. I'll just buy Lemart separate.

It seems pretty obvious that the Death Company Intercessors (jump pack ones included) will have Inferno pistol added to "1 model's heavy bolt pistol can be replaced with one if the following:" and the eviscerator will be added to the "1 model can replace it's bolt rifle or astartes chainsword with one of the following:). Hopefully thier rules/abilities are good as otherwise they are going to be ignored for standard jump pack intercessors.
@@nathanthom8176 we also know that at least our intercessor sergeants can take inferno pistols. I hope this extends to our JAI sergeants as well since nobody uses Intercessors

There's a part of me that wants to buy this box. I have a pretty significant Blood Angels army that I've collected over many years, which includes the old Lemartes and Astorath models, but I really do like these newer sculpts of the characters. I have a bunch of assault intercessors already, but another 10 wouldn't be the worst thing. I don't have that new dreadnought or any jump assault intercessors yet. As much as that upgrade sprue looks relatively disappointing, it does have some nice looking shoulder pads and bits which would be nice for some relatively easy conversions. Then I realize that I still have a pretty big pile of shame, and I've been working on models for other wargames instead of 40k for the last couple of years, as I really detest the new rules. I didn't like 9th, and from what I've seen, 10th leans into the issues I have with 9th. This box would likely sit in my pile of shame for years..... IF I was to buy this box, it would be because I think the box art and models look awesome enough that I want to paint them up and put them on the shelf along with the rest of my army. And while these are cool models, they aren't quite cool enough for me to jump at this as enthusiastically as I thought I would when I first read some rumors that something like this was coming.

I wonder if we might get some other sheets we aren't expecting because I wouldn't be surprised if both versions of Tycho are removed. Finecast model with nothing to go with. The Jump pack Sanguinary Priest would be likely to go since there is no model for it. Maybe we can get Death Company captains and/or lieutenants back.
Maybe there will be another box with the predicted new Sang Guard and a new Sang priest.
There was a rumour a few months ago about a new sanctuary priest, that seems to have quieten down now though.
I have a billion Assault Intercessors. I actually used Reivers with assault intercessors arms for my existing Death Company Intercessors.
DC Intercessors are the same price as Assault Intercessors so they aren't exactly expensive but I get they don't get any play because it just doesn't click yet.
I bought a bunch of DC boxes so I can have a bunch of shoulder pads and helmets. If any of my local stores get any more stock of them I'll grab a couple more. The price per bit ratio works out better than these upgrade sprues.
Damn haven’t even considered the old DC box could be more cost-effective than the new upgrades sprue.
I'm actually pretty happy with the new box. I still only have the old metal Lemartes and while I love the old chap, I'm excited for the new one. It's by far my highlight in this box ^^ The new Astorath reminds me of Mephistons "new" model because it is an upscaled model while keeping the flair of the old miniature and it looks perfect. Finally no more finecast xD I've skipped the Brutalis when it came out so this is ideal timing for me. And while I'm sad that the DC marines are probably losing a lot of weapon options I'm still reluctant to judge them too soon. We'll have to wait for the datasheet and points costs. Maybe they get a cool rule, maybe they are cheaper, maybe Lemartes and Astorath get new rules that make our DC great. We'll see soon enough. The upgrade sprue looks a tad disappointing but considering our current primaris upgrade sprue the new one is a huge bonus. That said, I love the old models with the customizability and am sad to see them leave. On the other hand, and this is purely my opinion, it was a chore to paint every detail on the 25 or 30 DC marines that I have and I didn't really enjoy painting them. All in all this reveal could have been better but I'm still hyped and can't wait to see the new Sanguinary Guard and Sanguinor models and anything else they might have in their back pocket ^^

Valrak said there is going to be a new captain, so if this replaces both versions of tycho, the number of datasheets are exactly 18.

I don't even like the "Lemartes." It's not a bad DC Chaplain by itself but I don't like the head and its not a good replacement for the awesome current Lemartes.

So 2 new HQ models for Blood Angels. Not bad actually, considering Death Guard only got 1 HQ model for 9th edition.
A bit sad that we didn’t get any inferno pistols, Thammers, claws, or really anything for the Death company marines in this box. Part of what makes DCompany cool for me is that you can give them solid gear and they can’t retreat, meaning your opponent has to focus on them or they could have some serious AP or high strength weapons in their back field due to the high mobility they have.
These guys will probably be solid but not really anything too flexible like their first born counterparts.
The Inferno Pistol and Eviscerator from the upgrade sprues seem compatible with the DC, so that’s something at least, and we get 4 spures in the box.
Like you John, I'm glad I have first born death company sprue bits and bobs to enhance things with. I'm still excited overall for this box! I suppose you could look at these DC sculpts being less ornate as due to the losses to the Tyranid hive fleet Leviathan attack. I read the books and NO Death company survived the battle. I think Astorath and Lemartes survived b/c they were on some other mission somewhere.
I feel like your clutching man, I suppose in lower wise that does make a little bit of sense. I just really like all the old unique plastic.
As a newer player to the game, I’m really liking this box. I don’t have lemartes or asteroth yet. And I only have 5 DC with jump packs.

Have to agree, whilst the new Lemartes and Astorath look incredible, the lack of options and heraldry on everthing else is concerning. The 'new' DC units feel lazy as just the standard kit with an upgrade sprue like the current intercessor kits and seems to confirm the standard primaris rule of 1 special upgrade per 5 models. The dread being a basic brutalis kit is also a big shame. Low effort compared to Dark Angels and Black Templars releases imo, but a mix of fomo and ooh shiny means i will most likely still buy.

So not very happy with losing the OG Death Company. Lemartes looks amazing to me and will get him for sure. Looking at the pricing for the US, I would expect to see a price tag of around $295. Total on GW site for what's in there is $492.50 so 40% off would bring it down to the $295 price. I don't use the Datasheet cards and don't need the on foot Intercessors. Boy it would be hard to swallow at that price...

Great content John as usual. I could see them doing away with captain Tycho data sheet since he is long dead in lore. Super excited for this box just for the basis of new models! I hope some new data sheet for one of the characters gives a free CP every turn like Azrael does for the Dark Angels. I want to be forced to use the epic characters but i dont at the moment.

So, look, im relatively new in the hobby, i might have 5 years in this. I started with Primaris, I understand the aprehension but i cant fail to be excited with the new releases because aesthetically i like Astorath and Lemartes and I do like how Primaris look. Maybe theyll be good, or maybe not, but to me is how the look of the army determines what i collect, bot necessarily if they're great on the table.

Love that Lemartes isn’t on a tactical rock. Will I still absolutely consider putting him on one? Yea but I get the choice and that’s cool. With astorath the choice is can I cut it with clippers or do I need a hobby saw lol

Not to be rude but I think ur forgetting that is says you get 4 of the upgrade sprue’s in the box, and the regular intercessor DC means/makes it much easier to make a full DC army. So with this in mind I think it’s fine, also this could just be me but the stuff in sprue is high quality (faces) and makes it easier to balance the DC. Finally when I go to get an upgrade sprue I really only need some transfers or shoulder pads and u get a lot in it.

Also I think you forgot the asssult Intercessors come as a box of 10 so I don’t think the saving will be as good as you’ve calculated! Only Astorath and the upgrade sprues that interest me and I don’t think I can justify the box just for those.
So if this box is retailing for people say then it will be really great value.
I must say while I understand that the box and updates are a pretty mixed bag, as a new player I am really excited to pick this box up

There a quite a few folks out there that make 3d prints of DC shoulders and BA stuff. Just going to have to go that way to get uniqueness. But if DC on foot is a thing I have alot of DC power packs for foot folks.
I don't think the new Lemartes necessarily needs to have crossed the Rubicon, he could just be wearing newer armour, with his model upscaled to primaris scale, similar to the Black Templars Castellan, or Castellan Crowe for the Grey Knights, who has firstborn armour, but is as tall as a primaris marine despite clearly not being primaris. Nowadays the scale of the model doesn't really indicate whether the marine inside the armour is primaris.

@@ba_commander I could totally be wrong and they end up putting out a novel or a paragraph in the codex about him undergoing the primaris operation, but yeah it seems like GW doesn't have as much of a strict primaris size = primaris marine rule anymore.
