Unfortunately, pain; I had to fight for every moment. My mum hated this stuff so I was always kind of sneaking around. She tolerated it more than video games, but not by much. My nostalgia from that time is deeply tinged with anger and depression. I spent most of the video crying out of regret.

Well fuck. Wasn't expecting to cry while watching a midwinter video.
My dad was the one that got me and my brother into the hobby. I'll always remember him taking us to games day and him building us a baneblade tank each out of cardboard.
He died three years ago, and never got the chance to meet my daughter. I've got so many of his 80s models that need painting, but can never find the push to paint them.
Thanks for the video dude, sorry about your dad!!

My goodness. Right in the feels, I let this video play to just listen to while driving to work this morning and had to steer clear of the fast lane because I cried so hard. Very well chosen words about loved ones and nostalgia - they really hit home. @MidwinterMinis I am sorry about your dad and that he wasn‘t able to meet your kids. Such things are often (mistakenly) taken for granted in life, but everything is quite fragile really and one can be thankful if all is alright when waking up each morning. All the best!

As a similar age, I got the same box set one year for Christmas and was hooked. This is a beautiful video in commemoration of your dad, and it brought me to tears.
While I’ve not lost my dad, he is in hospital as I type this, recovering from an operation which saved his life. I moved away from home to England 12 years ago and I miss him dearly. Nostalgia of my happy childhood memories, similar to yours shown in the video hit me like a truck. As a father to a 3.5 year old boy, I can’t wait to share my love of miniatures with him too. Maybe he’ll have some sort of similar reflections of me when he’s old and I’m gone, that way, a part of me will live on in him, just as your dad does in you.

These Blood Angels look amazing! Honestly, the super-saturated, cartoonish look of the magazines and catalogs of the 90’s always looked better to me than the “official“ painting schemes, maybe because I always thought of miniatures as toys (I never played miniature war games, but I liked to paint tanks.)
“Nostalgia is the ache of happiness remembered”-wow that’s good. I lost my dad 30 years ago (he was 57, the same age that I am now). Because he was a history buff and an educator, he loved the WW2 models and minis that I painted for my dioramas. My best memories are of him teaching me about history, especially about WW2 battles and the tanks and planes used by all sides. I learned so much from him that I tested out of courses at school when teachers realized that they weren’t teaching me anything. He was on the autism spectrum (as am I) and we had a difficult time connecting emotionally, and I ended up equating knowledge sharing with love. This video has reduced me to tears.

That was deep. Very deep. I lost my dad Nov 2019. While he didn't play any of the games, I spent the 80's showing him what I'd been working on and then the 90's and 2000's sitting in the office after work a couple of times a week (we worked together too) painting, chatting to him and listening to music together. My 90's Bretonnians give me a similar feeling your Blood Angels do to you. Big hugs mate x
Luckily this was cheered right up by "Ohhh my word... I didn't fuck it up" Legend level quote 😁

Great video, we're of a similar age and second edition was my first real foray into Warhammer, though there was a copy of Rogue Trader lying around... :) My dad bought me my first miniatures when I was 10, he drove a 90 minute round trip to pick up some Space Marine chaplains, techmarines and Eldar Dire Avengers, because that's what you do when you don't know what these little metal space men toys are :) My dad never understood what I saw in 40k, but he knew I loved painting and always encouraged me. We lost my dad 5 years ago as well and I got back into the hobby shortly afterwards. Now painting is my go to method of getting through whatever I'm struggling with. Thanks for the nostalgia trip and reminding us how nostalgia isn't a fault, it's a way of remembering the good times :)

Didn't expect a video like this to hit the way it did... I lost my grandfather a mere two days ago, and remembering all the times we would go visit just to say hello, or the summer that I helped him work on his plane... It really aches to think back of all the good times we had together as a family. I'll always keep those moments close to my heart, as you do with memories of your dad. Thanks so much for the video.

I have been waiting years for this video. I got into 40k and built out a full second edition army and collection because of your videos. I play Blood Angels. I am slowly introducing my kids to the hobby too.
Then, there I am, weeping over this video because I miss my dad, fully aware of how old he is and how little I get to see him.
You really are the best of the community, and I will never watch this video again.

Hey Guy! Honestly you made me cry in my Kitchen painting up some Marines. I know exactly how you feel about the loss of your dad, the memories, your Kids not knowing him etc. It‘s the same at my side here. Just Today during Dinner my Four-year-old asked about my dad and we looked at pictures and the Model Cars that once belonged to my dad and are now everywhere in the livingroom. Wonderful and gut wrenching at the same time.
Thank you for sharing something like that while painting up these fantastic Models from another time.
A truely remarkable Video and Series.
    I salute you Brother!
    Cheers, Brother Julez

What a wonderful video Guy. I am 51 and having an absolute blast re-living my youth through Warhammer (now that I can actually afford to do it the way my younger self could only dream of)! I have joined my local Warhammer club and I am totally invested in my Blood Angels which I get such pleasure out of painting and gaming with. As importent as all this is though it is nothing compared to the shared experience I have with my 11 year old son who has also found the joy of 40K and has developed a gloriously enthusiastic connection with Death Guard (what young boy doesn't appreciate rancid poxwalkers and hulking Blightlord Terminators)! The shared connection we have when modelling and playing together gives me immeasurable joy and we played our first doubles tournament together a few weeks ago which was such a great experience - even though we got hammered! A nostalgic reflection of times gone by can be bitter sweet but to know you are forging life-long memories and positive connections with your kids is the very essence of good parenting. It doesn't matter what the focus of that connection is - though let's be honest if it involves bolt guns and chain swords that's pretty epic! Keep up the good work and much respect from another Warhammer dad. 😄

tbh the way you treat your kids is so sweet, you’re genuinely such a good parent. your kids are interested in what you do, and allowing them to paint their little own figures definitely made them feel connected to you. mourning is non-linear, and i wish you even more happy days and happier memories.

Sitting here painting my own Warhammer, I was watching youtube on the side until your video caught my attention. I got to play my first game of Combat Patrol with my friend, and even knowing his mini's weren't complete or even if we were using a normal table with cups and bowls as terrain, we still had an absolute blast. Watching this video made me realize that I'm doing exactly what you did as a young kid with your dad, and I am so incredibly thankful for you making this video and sharing your heart-touching words with the whole community. I hope to one day look back at the memories just like you get to. With all of one's heart, I am sorry for the loss of your Father, and thank you so very much for all you do for this community, and for your friends and family. You rock.

    Awesome, just awesome.
We seem to be very alike, as i got the 2nd Ed boxset from my folks around 10 years old in the mid 90s, and i also painted them as Blood Angels (i still think that look is my fav look for any SM Chapter). Ive justed turned 40 and have a 5yo daughter who loves to be questioning me about what im painted. I can totally relate to all that, and the nostalgia this video has kicked up in me.
Im very lucky as i still have my dad, despite coming within a gnats hair of losing him back in 2020 (but the act of strangers who must have been heaven sent). We can only try to be the dads they were to us and build on the examples they set, as well as treasure the times we have together. Im sure your kids will with you, as i know mine does with me. And who knows, maybe they'll want to paint Blood Angels too!
