    Back in the mid '90s I was obsessed with having white hair. The lightening technique is pretty much the best I've seen. My favorite toner was called Virgin Snow by Manic Panic. My hair always came out perfectly white. Used to get a lot of stares. Love love love white hair.

      Did you do this on already bleached hair? I have a real hair wig and it’s a light blonde color but I want it to be bright white without bleaching it! (If I bleach it will destroy it)

    To those who are making comments about bleach and shampoo - this method is perfectly safe so long as you make sure you thoroughly rinse out all of the shampoo. Also, when you are shampooing or conditioning a client, you should never be lathering it into the scalp directly. Work and massage your fingers through the hair strands but never massage it into the scalp - this is one of the biggest errors that people make and if your training is top class, then this will be drilled into you.
    And lastly, this method in the video is only really suitable to those who have dark roots and already lightened ends - if your client has a full head of dark hair, begin with ends first with foils. The roots tend to develop quicker than the ends because it is accelerated slightly by the natural heat of the scalp.
    Another reason why so much of the product is being used to lighten the hair in this video is also down to the consistency of the mixture. It is quite thick - which isn't necessarily a bad thing - but that does mean that you will require more of it to ensure you're getting it onto all of the hair strands so you don't end up with spots or streaks. If you have taken a partition of hair while applying the product and hair strands are overlapping, then don't be afraid to use a comb to separate them and once again apply product.
    Needless to say, it's refreshing to see someone be critically honest about the fact that you should not be cutting corners on the amount of product used and best practice is to calculate those costs into the final price for your client.

      Do you mean for this technique the shampoo shouldn't be used on the scalp? At my school, we learned that shampoo should be focused on the scalp and used scalp massage techniques. It was in the textbook too.

      carbinja I believe it has nothing to do with temperature. The hair on the back of the scalp is not as exposed to the sun and the elements as the top of our hair is. It gets dryer and more damaged naturally even at the scalp. We can think of the abuse it takes with the iron or blow dryer. We pay more attention to the front when we’re doing our own hair as well. This all creates a weaker and lighter base at the top of the crown thus it pulls much quicker.

      Well yes maybe so but to this statement- it actually can be done on way darker hair - because I’ve done it I have actually made Navajo Indian hair Middle Eastern hair I have done on Latin Hispanic very coarse very curly and it all really truly depends on one professional products being used specific ones in my opinion because not all of them perform the same I find that University brands like dating is my identity Lightner there was a brand are used to use beauty school that come at the time it used to be in at a local distributor ship call peerless beauty supply or in Utah and I’ve seen it elsewhere it’s called 30 minute bleach comes in A blue box there’s four applications which is amazing leaves that are in great shape with great integrity Nexxus Aloxxi lightener as I mentioned was one I used for years- plus you’re talking to a hairdresser of 25 years I’ve been lightening / coloring hair but my hair for the majority of that time platinum blonde I’m a level III so it can be done the one thing about it is is the level of damage but specifically the types of product I do believe that there are specific lighteners that are better than others myself from the start was the 30minute bleach in a blue box by beauty school Nexxus Aloxxi Lightener had come out on the market and I used it for years I don’t know if it’s still being made but I’ve had to look to other brands- currently I use Guy Tang #MyIdentity his #Big 9 or his magnum #8 Lightener -I’ve never used his rose gold balayage #7 but I’m pretty sure the power that the other two have you as my guy tang I am sure that the special seven could work it’s got to last in technology but I know that he uses it for a balayage which I’m not a huge promoter of I don’t do them because to me it looks like a root rot my opinion it looks like a grown-up sloppy hair color and it’s like just do your damn roots but I would imagine that the quality that is in this product I am probably pretty sure I could get platinum blonde out of mine even at a level III but I would dare say that the biggest thing is the products that are used in the salon if it’s a Home done deal I would say that Products used at home definitely need to be professional I cannot be more stuff from the grocery store otherwise it needs to be the level of what I recommend like red kiln urology most of matrix is products are fairly great Paul Mitchell’s our pool he series hair care not the regular white line that most of optometrist down for Lanza there is a brand that comes out of California called macadamia oil which is fantastic Cameron makes pretty good hair care enjoy I did used to like a brand called lava hair care I haven’t seen in a long time but I do believeIt is about the level of damage I do believe that’s what’s being done at home the hair care at home what types of styling implements like is it daily blood drying is it Daley flat iron in curling irons is going to add to the level of damage sell that much more you need to add that much extra better quality and product so something like Joico I’m sorry but its not gonna cut the mustard or like KMS. I have used & dealt with these brands Sorry they don’t work to the level of quality that most colored, bleached, really horribly highly multi dimensional multi porosity, double process hair whether it’s color lightener (bleach) and tone or highlift color possibly combined with Chemically straightened and maybe highlighted The biggest thing what people need to remember is everything you do to your hair chemically each time you do a color or yet even every day styling like flat irons - yet the elements of the earth and the length , it is older hair that’s been washed add color or whatever else , all factors that determine hair health but what chemical services done or could possibly don. it just adds that much more damage everything you do & each time and this isn’t just on the level of each time it’s what you’ve had done in the process how long the hair is how long is the hair been around - Also factor in it’s been washed over and over so if it isn’t being colored & used with high-quality product hair care home maintenance for it --you’re gonna run into problems and that’s where the realism that comes in and it something I say that clients where I think most hairdressers will not tell the truth so many -they’re only after the cash- I do believe that there are some that are like me who I’m looking for the integrity of the hair. I don’t care what is it you want but that you must & have to tell me what you’ve done to your hair previously. Whether it’s if you have colored at home if you’ve used store box color or whatever Remember everything you do to your hair especially chemical treatments like haircolor like hair lightener a.k.a. bleach any other hair chemical services Even like a Brazilian blowout sorry I’m dead set against it -it’s got formaldehyde in it. But It is all going to be a determining in each service each time unless it’s a retouch or like deposit only like doing darker I mean even color remover‘s are going to put some level of damage on hair -- so if it’s been previously treated with anything you have to think with everything you’ve done to it The longer the hair the longer the history and list of what you’ve done. those are all big determining factors of what your outcome is going to be each present time you color your hair or Latin or whatever you’re doing and that’s why again I recommend the brand that I do because I know the level Of quality that they deliver - Like Redken Pureology , Macadamia Oil hair ,Lanza , Enjoy , most Matrix brand like Biolage. Or Schwarzkopf .....There is a series to Paul Mitchell Awapuhi series it is an actual different shampoo conditioner than the typical Paul Mitchell. it’s much more expensive and definitely better quality & definitely a better caliber of hair care , it comes in black bottles so you’ll know the difference because their original line comes in white packaging so most other stuff possibly if it’s pro stuff . But like most store bought. it’s not gonna perform the level of care that Highly colored / lightened , highly damaged , double processed , again lightened black to blonde , blonde to red or black or otherwise -that kind of hair coloring -that’s going on like when people to change their color all the time but again there’s other brands Abba , Nexxus Nexxus is still around -I understand they’re still available but not as widely available as one very well known brand. As to what I understood from years ago that it was sold to the gentleman who owned Alberto VO5 Is why you’ll find it in a lot of major chain stores like Walmart target CVS Rite Aid Walgreens and the general is nothing wrong with my service products just said they’ve been deferred by probably delivery courier services or people looking to just make a quick buck but do be skeptical if it is the real stuff when it comes to professional hair care skin care of what night you’re going to have generally good guarantee that it’s not in salons it will be guaranteed most wines have a money back guarantee but it is possible to lighten really dark hair level 321 which people are darkest brown dark brown but you got a remember the levels of lightning that hair goes through the level of damage depending on if you’re using 2030 and 40 volume peroxide developers depending on the type of bleach has powder bleach as opposed to oil whiteners there’s a lot of dirt terminal factors plus the application technique and process you know if her as being smothered in bleach over bleach all over the hair each time yeah it’s going to destroy her there is a certain way that it needs to be applied session for changing colors if it’s anything outside the realm of just a retouch of what you already have there’s a specific process it is considered under the umbrella of color correction which. It is and can be very costly it is the reason why license professionals are in most cases better to do so I’m not saying all hairdressers are great father is very much a skill to come to hair colored as I could for waiving any other haircut service in haircutter service salon it is possible but remember everything you do to your hair the types of products you’re using at home to what is being used in the salon or even if it’s something you do at home Remember each time you change it , each time you do whatever you do that’s always going to be the determining factor as to what the outcome is and ,,,,my biggest thing for me is , as a hair colorist is - what is the hair gonna be like in the end each time - what is the integrity of the hair

    As a Certified Hair Color Specialist, I have to get involved in the comments on Matt's procedures. He actually did a great job here and was very mindful of his client's hair limits and its integrity. His application was spot on. I would NEVER approach any hair color service without clarifying the hair first. That's just how I roll. Hair catches and holds onto all kinds of environmental elements. In tap water, for instance, copper, iron, and many other trace minerals are present and it remains in the hair and if the hair has high porosity levels, it's even worse. Now we add alkalines and oxidative colors to the picture along with hydrogen peroxide and we have all kinds of chemical reactions going on trying to work through things that it's not designed to. I'm assuming Matt was using a 20V oxidant in his lightener. The reason the back of someone's head takes a bit longer to process is primarily based on density. That's where most of the density lives on our heads. Sunlight doesn't penetrate through the strands as fast as it does the top and sides therefore, typically, the top of the head has a lighter Natural Level and less density. Lightening action (how fast it works) is based on the type of hair you're working on. Fine, Medium, or Coarse. Fine hair colors/lightens faster and could appear a whole level lighter than you formulated. Medium textures color/lighten pretty much as you would expect and Coarse hair colors/lightens slower and a level deeper than you formulated due to the thicker cuticle layer it has. As far as heat sources are concerned in developing/processing color/lighteners. I don't use hood dryers. That's just dry heat. I have two types of color processors in my salon. One is infrared and the other is steam. The steam heat with distilled water is a true game changer. All my colors are processed in 15-20 minutes with steam. Infrared is between 20-30. I can get complete grey coverage with 10V too if the hair isn't too coarse. Bravo to Matt. I loved the outcome.

    You start doing the bleaching process in the back of the head because it's the coolest and takes the longest to process. I usually add a yellow/orange cancel to the bleach with a little olaplex. Or a protein filler. Somehow I master doing everyone's hair but mine 🤦🏼‍♀️

  • @thatsrealroughbud...2394
    @thatsrealroughbud...2394 Před 5 lety +30

    People not understanding that bleach doesn't give a f%^& about water just kinda underscores the lack of even basic knowledge of chemistry a lot of cosmetology instructors have. Bleach has a pH of 13... the only reason why washing the hair with water "stops" the reaction is because we use sooooo much water to wash it away. Water has a duel polarity which allows it to carry away so many different types of substances, but water has a pH of around 7 typically. There is no way that damp hair is going to retain enough water to remotely neutralize bleach.... Your hair, skin and body in general are naturally more acidic than water any day of the week. The only time I'd flinch is if you were suggesting to soak the hair in vinegar before starting.
    If you REALLY want to go boujie with this technique, skip the water and drench the hair in cold pressed coconut oil. Same principle, bleach doesn't give a f&^%, it will cut through just about anything, but, the oil will help spreadibility, keep it from drying out AND it will help reduce the drying effects of the bleach on the hair itself which is a major source of breakage.
    The key to white hair is to go slow, cold, and minimize the inevitable damage.
    The whitest my hair has even been was by following these steps.
    1. Hair given a protein treatment. We were being cheap, so we STARTED by using ApHogee's 2 step protein treatment.
    2. Hair is allowed to cold dry
    3. Hair is saturated in cold pressed coconut oil
    4. 1:2 ratio of bleach and 20 Vol c Olaplex, which reduced the lifting power to 10 Vol
    5. Hair is COLD processed c that 10 Vol equivalent for almost an HOUR. Low, slow, cold. More time =/= more damage if you go slow. It was lifted to lvl 9, NOT 10.
    6. ApHogee 2 step is used AGAIN.
    7. Porosity corrector is applied to damp, towel dried hair
    9. Wella T18 toner c violet booster and Olaplex is applied to damp hair for 20-40 min. T18 will lift, which is why the hair was only processed to lvl 9. Hair is allowed to silver, and even purple at the roots.
    10. Hair comes out purple/silver, and hair aftercare (pH correction, moisture, etc.) is done.
    11. Hair sleeping mask is applied, excess violet tones are washed away in the proceeding two showers at home.
    12. Hair is left soft, hydrated and as healthy as white hair can be. Oh, and yes, as white as human hair can possibly be.
    13. Upkeep is done c purple shampoo/conditioner and masks.
    People always argue with me about it, but I'll believe them when they've had long white hair for 10+ years and they can run a brush through it from root to end without loosing clumps of hair in the process.

      @jana g I jus got my full head bleached and am confused on the aftercare.. should I use a protein conditioner/mask ( such as the joico intense hydrator ? ) to keep my hair healthy or jus use moisturizing ones? I had bad experience using a protein rich shampoo n conditioner (moroccanoil moisture repair shampoo and conditioner ) which made my hair brittle so now al scared to use anything with keratin in the ingredients . I only wash my hair once a week for reference . Please someone answer!!

    • @thatsrealroughbud...2394
      @thatsrealroughbud...2394 Před 5 lety +1

      @@nashjohnjrvlogs5944 It will depend on your hair. Start by going through all of your products ingredient lists and look for anything that says "hydrolyzed" or protein. These all contain some type of protein which when over used will cause your hair to become brittle and snap. Sally's actually has a lot of good hair masks that are protein low/free.
      If you've had this problem before, know that you should look at cutting down on the protein applications, and focus primarily on moisture. Also, if your hair is brittle RIGHT NOW, cut down on coconut oil as well. It's structure helps retain keratin which can prolong the brittle state of your hair. Switch to another type of hair friendly oil.
      I would still advise the protein steps WHILE doing bleach applications, but for aftercare, reign it back to products c protein once a week and less if the brittleness persists. You should have a high moisture hair mask that you're using on a day off, or sleeping in as well. If your hair is very brittle, be careful about sleeping with any product in your hair bc sometimes if you are moving around too much, it can cause more breakage in a damp state.
      I'd start with an oil pull (minus coconut oil), make sure you're cowashing, cut your hair washing down, if you need to, you can still clean your hair effectively with rinsing the scalp well, and conditioner.
      Natural hair blogs have great articles that have a lot of cross over with 4b+ and white hair. Both have very similar concerns with protein, pH and moisture balance.
      White hair and natural hair are investments that require a lot of upkeep. There is sadly no one step fix all because our starting hair types are all different. These may be a good jumping point, but after care is very much a process of experimentation for each person to strike their balance for their personal needs.
      Hope that helps.

      It purely depends on the level of lift you get the hair in the first place and how much yellow/Orange tones are in the hair. I work with wella colour and usually my go to pocket formulas for an icy blonde is in color touch 10/81(2 parts)+9/16(1part)+7/89(a dot) and then 1.9 emulsion. Or in illumina a simple 10/1. Again it's all down to how light the hair is to begin with and just neutralizing the tone without bringing down the base of the hair.

    • @1971DHolbrook
      @1971DHolbrook Před 5 lety

      Blondie if u don’t put lightener on the scalp it won’t cover all your root growth . . There’s off scalp and on scalp bleach . If it gets on your already bleached hair some it won’t hurt it . That’s what toners are for to even out your hair color to make it the same color all over . No it won’t burn your scalp or blister it . 40v will make your scalp red some and tender cause it’s a high volume and not recommended to use unless your hair is very dark . 40 volume has to be used sometimes on dark hair to get the lift it needs instead of double processing which damages your hair more and makes your scalp really irritated. 20v doesn’t damage the hair even though some ppls hair lift faster than others . But you always start in the back of your hair and also when your hair is bleached your hair follicles are wide open so using a semi or Demi toner or hair color works like a permanent color . I’ve been doing hair color since I was 14 . I’m 48 . I’ve had hairdressers ruin my hair so I do my own . Which later years I went to school. But some just teach you the basics . I’ve had platinum hair all my life almost . This is a very great video. I’m going to order that toner . I hope this helps you some .

    • @jamescopeland6829
      @jamescopeland6829 Před 5 lety +1

      Always avoid the scalp. The same rule applies to conditioner also. The only place either of those two things should be going to are the hair strands. Whoever taught you this, keep in contact with them - because they certainly know their stuff. So many girls have come through my doors with the bad habit of lathering on so much shampoo and conditioner, and massaging it into the scalp when they wash hair and it is honestly bad practice.
      If someone wants to treat their scalp, then the best method is to actually exfoliate it as that will also help prevent clogging up any pores which is very easy to do with shampoo and conditioner. Apple cider vinegar, lemon juice, essential oils and some salt is a very cost-effective method. If the person has a naturally oily scalp, then they should drop the essential oil. Rinse thoroughly afterwards and then shampoo hair strands to make sure there is no leftover gloop.

    Loved the video,i would be interested in seeing you taking someone from all over babylights which are already platinum to full platinum hair... I just described my situation. I used to be full Platinum hair then my stylist decided she would start doing babylights as my touchups to help my hair health. And told me when i wanted to go back to a bleach and tone we could well its been a year now and i keep telling her i miss my white hair and i wanna go back. But she said she wont do it, because it would be impossible to pickout all the dark. Ps im a stylist as well vut i wont do my own hair

    • @JuliaKirsty
      @JuliaKirsty Před 5 lety +1

      That's something, I think about rn too. Because I started switching to babylights + balayage instead of bleach and tone. But what if I ever wanna go back? I didn't do it for hair health though, I did it because I prefer the look atm. (And of course the fact that I can wait longer in between touch ups without looking horrendous.) I think most stylists would just overlap the bleach or not do it at all. Or maybe suggest not bleaching it white but just bring it to a darker tone of silver/grey for transition until it's grown out enough to get it to the desired shade... I dunno, just what popped into my head throughout the past couple of weeks xD

    Hey, thanks for the video. I have a real problem with my hair turning purplish when I tone. I find it extremely difficult to get an even color. How long do you keep the toner in, and if my ends are already light, do I still use toner at the end? How do you get the even color when the roots are freshly bleached? I've done it about 3 times, but now it just won't work! Any suggestions?

  • @akiaici
    @akiaici Před 5 lety

    The back processes longer than the front, cause the front hair cuticle is more exposed to UV, and other weather condition... so the hair is “healtier” in the back of the head... also the aria of the head that releases more heat is also the front ( top of the head... exactly where the sun light hits)... that is why the front lighten up faster than the back.

And having a bonder in it. Demi's Rock! though I've never used a blonde Demi cuz I was afraid it would grab dark because of my past experiences I've never used a lighter Demi I've always used darker ones next time I will definitely try this.

    • @thatsrealroughbud...2394
      @thatsrealroughbud...2394 Před 5 lety

      If you're doing your own hair, invest in oil, not water. Bleach doesn't care about what it's cutting through, it's bleach. Fully saturate your hair in cold pressed coconut oil, no hippie, alternative medicine bs, it just works well because of it's melting point and structure. It does the same thing he's talking about here in the way of keeping your bleach from drying, but it also helps prevent your hair from drying out which is a major breakage problem for extreme lifting.

    Starting in the back how I learned to bleach in beauty school in the 80’s, the back hair is always darkest and takes longer to lift. One theory is the the top and front hair naturally gets more sun exposure so it tends to be lighter,

      Justine Sammut you barely saw it process; Lumishine is fairly strong and opaque with the cooler tones such as SB. The pigment deposits darker than expected. It usually takes in one shot.

    Also the back takes longer to process because the hair in the back of the head is sometimes a half to a level darker than the front. . Also starting in the back is a great technique for people who take a little bit longer to apply & need to rinse to the back first

    We where always taught to put cotton between sections and do a "virgin" application when roots are this long. I am certain that Matt has had more varied feedback and training in blonding than I have, but if you had asked me I would have told you that this method would have created banding for sure. Also the overlapping onto the already blonde parts makes we wince, but it turned out nicely, so who knows, a million different ways to get a result I guess. I kind of wish Matt had addressed the theory of the traditional approach vs this approach for us old schoolers.
