I carved this bat from an unknown wood species, which I think is mulberry. Its finished with boiled linseed oil.

This bat is for when the simply safe alarm goes off
Found someone trying to climb through the kitchen window once, picked up the bat tapping my hand as I walked back in kitchen, as they had not seen me. They soon beat a hasty retreat,
Shd swing for the fence next time
You picked the wrong house fool
CJ? *OOooOooOooooo*
Nawh, the alarm system is so that you can evaluate the threat and choose the appropriate firearm to deal with it. When the "threat" is a raccoon or 'possum getting into your dog's food, you choose a different caliber / loading than if it is a wild boar destroying your yard or a criminal trying to break into your house or vehicle. Use the right tool for the job.
and your lathe is over in the corner like, "dude. dude"
The lathes broken...I wish I could just toss it out the window.
old school lathe restoration project?! well yes please!
Seriously
Did he use it ? 😑
thats cheating
I can't even draw a circle much less hand carve one. Incredible! You make a very difficult project look easy.
Thanks Justin!!
Its a lot harder to draw a circle.
No one can draw a perfect circle, our hands are too complex for such precise tasks.
@@AndyRawls what wood do you use please?
@@nsogie1 looks like wood
I used your guidance in this video and made my first bat with a spokeshave and a grinder - it's super awesome! Thanks
I love how much care you put into ever single project
With your mad skills you should make a bow. Red oak works well👍
I think that’s a great idea!
Ipe works even better
Ive read several books that say Yew wood is an excellent wood for bows.
I would love to see that build! My son just watched this video and wants me ot make one for him. Ummm....
Subbed because I want to see this happen and don't want to miss it! (great video, too!)
After a long and stressful day, watching Andy making awesome stuff out of wood is what I need 🎃
You could’ve easily not included the times you missed the ball, but it was awesome how intrigued I was into the video and you walk up confidently to hit the ball and you miss! It was by far the funniest thing for me!
Just made a bat using this video to help a lot, it’s really not that hard once you get in the groove. I only have a hand saw, plane, axe and drill and still made it work. Thank you for the video it helped so much in this project :)
Gotta love how he kept the swing and a miss in there, bet he didn’t know he was such a great pitcher lol
I really dug this video. Something real peaceful and enjoyable about someone working in mostly silence, a few notes here and there w subtitles. Kudos.
At 2:06 I thought your dog was a statue and I was like “am I trippin or did that statue just move”
I just want to say, you are one of the most talented carpenters I’ve ever seen. I started on the spoon video I I can’t get enough! Thank you so much for such amazing videos👏
Thanks a million for sharing your work with us, your one of the top carpenters on CZcams from what I've seen. Thank you from Canada
Great video , you should do a hockey stick ? 👍🏼
Johnb 9k he lives in texas
Yes
I will try my best keep a update video soon my good gent.
@@lilegg311 I'm still pissed that the Minnesota North Stars were kidnapped to Dallas. 😎
Shop hockey
Awesome video, really appreciated the ending where you didn't just cut to the first successful swing and especially liked that when you made contact the dog showed absolutely zero interest in chasing it down for you, lol. Very cool build
Love the ending :)
Bat looks amazing.
“You might wanna put a fielder up in those mountains. ya know. Just in case...”
james mirt benchwarmers?
Thanks for showing the first two wiffs. Could have easily edited that out but you didn’t which is why I like channels like yours much more than the This Old House style that make everything look like perfection that comes easy.
Haha I thought the same thing ....such a small thing but makes me respect him more
I've got a ton of mulberry in my garage. That's for sure mulberry. I love that bright yellow it has.
Man that was awesome. Thank you for that video, I thoroughly enjoyed watching it. You are a skilled artisan and my hat goes off to you, Sir. I spent four years in the United Sates Marine Corps flying all over creation in helicopters, making parts and pieces out of nothing to keep those birds in the air and today my Dad and I do much of the same keeping our planes flying but I swear I have never made anything as sweet as that bat! That was beautiful Brother.
Love watchin you work man. It's such an art
Beautiful work Andy! Really like you branding on the top of the bat too.
I stumbled upon your gunstock video yesterday and now I’m seeing this and I’ve got to say that your hand tool skills are incredible! Keep up the awesome videos!
one of the few youtube videos I don't feel like I wasted my time after watching it. Great videos. Good day mate!
This is the way all bats should be made, love the craftsmanship
Very cool. There is always more than one way to do things and this is a great option for someone if they don’t have a lathe. Thanks for sharing. 👍👍👍
I completely missed the “NO LATHE” part of the title and when you popped out the plane, I thought “that is such an Andy Rawls thing to do” and I honestly couldn’t have been more happy
This comment deserves more likes. It's so true.
Thanks for mentioning the wood in the description. I was thinking that it looked like ash, then I thought it didn't. and it didn't look like pecan either. Gotta love a good mystery wood.
Yeah I really have no clue. I found the log on my wife’s grandparents property. They tried to burn but didn’t succeed, years later I sawed into slabs.
Amazing project!
Now this is my kind of woodworking. Great work 👍🏻
Liked and commented because of the dinger you hit at the end.
More like a thudder. lol
Bouncy baseball
Good to see the warning systems but you still need a good water management system outside with a big catch basin and pump lad ! Oh how I wish we had the big bandsaw. It would be a rare day it wouldn't see use. I love yer style fella. The bat is another Rawls winner !
So very cool! I love the look of the two tone knob.
Was just talking to my father about doing this sometime and then you posted this. Awesome stuff, as always.
Absolutely stunning
amazing bat! well done. Had a silly idea while you were cutting the initial form. Doing the bat with strips of different woods laminated together and then carved. awesome work. you make it look easy :)
So much for breaking in and playing with your toys. Thanks again SimpliSafe. And baseball bat.
I love that you had a couple duffed swings and left it in the video. Nice looking bat!
Yayay!!! New video on my birthday!!! I enjoy your videos so much
Happy birthday!
Nice one Andy, perfect! It's the best cricket bat I've ever seen!
That’s awesome! I need of those for my man cave
Andy: this spoke shave is a bandsaw
Diresta: this bandsaw is a spokeshave
It's probably going on 45 years since I swung a bat and would have whiffed like you. Good hit once you finally made contact. Fun video, thanks for sharing.
My man. You should have way more than 300k subscribers.
Beautiful craftsmanship!
Loved this video, very impressive bat, especially by hand. Keep it up!
what a great finished! it looks like it was done in a lathe machine. subscribed!
Stuff like this just makes me appreciate .. 👊👍
Man great handwork! Love your work!
I haven't used a spoke shave for years! But I can improvise with a garage full of tools i guess! Love your craftsmanship! This is real carpentry! Cheers from Australia subbed and liked ❤👍👍👍
I’ve never been so inspired to make a baseball bat!
The editing at 10:36 between the 2 spokeshavers got me for a second haha
That’s awesome man!
Dope bat!! Shoulda called your shot!
Well done andy good job mate
That was AWESOME!
Mad skills man, awesome bat!
Guess you didn’t want to Sammy Sosa your bat by adding cork? 🤣 Cool build!
Funny enough, that does look like Mulberry or Black Locust. Get a black light and you could narrow it down. If it is mulberry, it's an IDEAL wood for bats. Similar density to maple, but harder and more flexible. Black Locust would also be an amazing bat wood. Only reason they're not used today is due to approval from MLB and availability.
Now, that bat would be considered illegal for MLB and AAA/AA ball usage, but the octagonal handle and mulberry wood with your craftsmanship would've made that bat LEGENDARY back in the day
What kind of wood did you use for the knob? It seems much more dense and harder to work. Also just out of curiosity why did you make the knob on the handle out of a second piece instead of flaring the end and keeping it all one piece? I’m not trying to critique your work I am genuinely curious. Great craftsmanship!
I would assume it was just for esthetics, but I have the same question
I believe this would be illegal by MLB's original bat rules. Needs to be one piece unless ruled otherwise by the league.
The spokeshave would have chipped off a piece of the knob most likely. This was a much faster way to do it.
this was the most incredible thing ive seen in a while
Tried my first one today from pine using this technique! I’m super happy with the result, though it did turn out to be 38” long…!
I got to say it
That is the most mighty ban saw I’ve seen yet 👍
Crazy cool Sir. Id love too see you're take on a osage or hickory longbow!
That came out mint. Perfect end.
Nice work I really love the way you take your time on the protects and also I subscribed
Beautiful work as always Andy 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
watching this and then bo jackson crack a bat over his helmet makes me feel bad
Roberto Ibanez de Garayo yeah well Bo was cool enough so
Very very nice, Andy. Well done...!
When your dog was on at 2:08 i was dying its soo cute and i just subbed and im new to this channel but some cool stuff dude
Awesome. True craftsman.
Metal lathes are the most fun things to use over.
That turned out great !
Old school bat-making.. man.. doing the old school methods but with some modern tools that is awesome.
Glad to see the response time for simplisafe is still lightning fast. That’s how it was when I worked there. Response time is supposed to be 30seconds or less.
When I worked there it was always like two or three seconds at the most.
Mighty fine bat sir, nice job
Nice job Andy!
Very cool. Thank you.
I love this video!
Thanks Andy - You show us that there is more than one way to skin a cat!
^5
The fact that your christening swing was a miss … I love this! You have my vote, good sir!
This is awesome!
It's beautiful!
Awesome video- thanks!
Look at those perfect wooden curls. They look like great fire starters.
Nice hitting and bat i wish I had so old bat
Great video Andy!!
Who else thinks it’s satisfying when he uses the hand tools
Nice job AR I enjoyed that
Thats a nice touch mark
So no one is gonna acknowledge the doge casually strolling in and out of shots? He has the personality of a cat lol
Awesome sir.... really enjoyed this video
I would like to see you do some work with a manual (pedal) lathe. I've seen some really interesting work done with them.
That is one SERIOUS band saw!!!
Beautiful work and very satisfying video. Wondering if bats are traditionally 2 piece. About google it now. Keep up the great content!
Just found your channel. "Now for my small bandsaw" Still twice as big as mine. :D
wowow amazing job... loved the video.. and the Bat
Sorry you have a defective dog! Lol, my dog's favorite thing is to 'play' golf or baseball. Always brings back the balls! Awesome work as always!
First that bandsaw is amazing! Love to see the vintage wood working equipment still going and second, I never imagined you could make a bat with out a lathe. Nice job!
Hey this bat is so cool i love it
