  • JW Anderson is one of the most prolific designers of the generation. He has dressed everyone from Celine Dion to Hailey Beiber and Beyonce. He even turned his magic to Loewe where he transformed the business from old and dull to incredibly desirable and popular. But how did he get to this point? And why, with all this fame, do so many people dislike his designs?

    Ngl, the "Watermelon" pink, green and blue glitter Converse were the first fashion related thing I became obsessed with. I started looking into J. W. Anderson as a whole and that catapulted me into fashion. I've always was attracted to haute couture but if it wasn't for those shoes I wouldn't be so invested into many designers and fashion brands. He really has a vision!
    Also, this whole series is amazing! You really need more recognition tbh

      I absolutely love his converse collaborations, I got a pair of the toy ones (the patent gummy looking ones) and despite being the most uncomfortable shows in history, I ALWAYS get compliments on them. I agree is an absolute visionary and he deserves so much more recognition for his work, you were really fortunate to have him be your introduction to underground brands, because he's one of the best and most respected names in the industry for a reason

    Yes I totally agree his clothes are very divisive (even for me!). Having said that he definitely injected that youth and modernity into Loewe. But, I for one, would have loved for him to respect the house’s codes (or perhaps there weren’t that many to begin with?). His first collection definitely had me (and my money) at the fishermans jeans and just the overall styling was so on point. What I also noticed is the drop in their leather goods quality (but only very slightly though, not like Chanel). I was just obsessed with Loewe leathers at one point before JW was appointed. The leathers were so supple and the grains were just to die for. Even the smell! Now its still good quality but no where near as good as before. Funny you should mention it being compared to Hermes because that was exactly how I felt! And it was the reason I had bought sooo sooo many of Loewe before JW (because I thought I was buying Hermes at a fraction of the price!)

    • @understitchYT
      @understitchYT  Před rokem +2

      I agree, I think he did the brand really well, I also think that you are right and that there was not many house codes before. (I don’t think they had clothing before, for example) but, yes, that first collection was absolutely incredible.
      In terms of quality, I don’t think the leather itself dropped in quality, but I do think they started to use a wider range of leather. Previously, Loewe would use a lot of less structured leather so their bags were more floppy. Whereas after Jonathan, they started making more structured bags, and so needed a stiffer leather. I think this was done more with calfskin than with lambskin, but I think they use both, neither of which a lesser leather, just used for different things. But that’s my two cents, of course could be wrong.

      I got the maths wrong 😰. I was born 93 so aw10 I wouldve been 17. I think the reason I got confused is because I started going to London alone at around 7 to go to Liberty’s, Harvey Nichols and Knightsbridge in general for Miu Miu and A Mcqueen and Dolce (shame what happened to them). I think in my mind all those years just got connected into one. But I adored it nonetheless

    Cracking video as always but something stumped me as I was listening. You say that you traveled to London at the age of 7 to view a fashion collection for men?
    You say everyone you knew (aged 7) was talking about this collection. Who did you know at the age of 7 that was talking about it?
    I think we need a deep dive into your up bringing.

    • @understitchYT
      @understitchYT  Před rokem +2

      Yeah I was a bit of an odd kid, so what happened was I travelled up specifically with the aim of seeing that collection in Selfridges and to try it on etc, when I got back to where I was living my friends and I, having seen the collection (I think in Vogue?) together were obsessed with it and so I ended up explaining what it was like to my admittedly small friendship group. As I kept traveling to London to see the different retail spaces (a favourite of mine was Liberty’s because it was easy to get to and fairly quiet, but I also spent a lot of time around Bond street because I loved Laduree and could just about afford a coffee). Because of the amount of time I spent in the shops I ended up befriending a lot of people who worked there and I considered these people my friends too, so we would discuss fashion together and they let me try on stuff, then when I got a bit older I started to go to sample sales and met more likeminded people. So through all this time JW was really massive in London and I would talk about his first and subsequent collections with these people 💕

    • @understitchYT
      @understitchYT  Před rokem +1

      I should definitely say this with the fact my parents had absolutely no idea, I used to lie and tell them that I was visiting a friend (who they knew and lived an hour away on the bus), they dropped me off at the bus stop and I would get off and go to the train station. They’ve never found out actually, they would be fuming, I never realised how unsafe what I was doing was until I got older

    • @understitchYT
      @understitchYT  Před rokem +2

      I'm such an idiot, I just realised I must've been 16, not 7. I have no idea why 7 got stuck in my head so badly, but thats not maths that is mathing and I just had this stark realisation and came back to tell you 😅 But, saying that, I was travelling to London alone at a very young age, maybe around 7-10 I would've started going, but this collection is AW10 so that was just not adding up sorry

    Hi understitch,
    I know you are his biggest fan. So I choose to self edit some the not so positive things. Dyslexia has many level of the conditions. The primary problem is not able recognized symbol like letters. There are other dyslexia condition where they can draw just fine. So what he said is possible true that he can not draw.
    What is true is his business deal in selling his name to LVMH. And sign a contract to head Loeve for fashion but yield no really hot handbag or collection. Partnering with Converse to do runner as well as collection with Uniglo like he running out of time or talent. He is a shrewd and smart operator and he grab as much money before his name cool off. No one got ripoff, he provide minimum effort for starry eyes customers. They got what they wanted minus the pixies dust. Everybody a winner.
