Me, too. I know you don't have to be from here, but my family roots go deep. From the winter at Valley Forge, to 25 family members from 2 generations fighting in the Civil War under a motto of "Every man a free man!" One of my friends who loved this country the best was a Chinese woman, a naturalized citizen, who could not understand the current desire by many to socialize this country. She had seen the dangers of socialism 1st hand and could not figure out why so many could not see that some were up to the destruction of their freedom. I also have Native American ancestors so don't start singing that sad song to me. Throughout humanity, to the victor go the spoils. Every Native for many years has had the option to leave the rez to improve their family's living condition. I salute those who worked towards changing the way the BIA functions and treats the Native Americans. I know all prefer to be called by each ones tribal identity, but to save space here, I had to use a more inclusive identifier. I have this on DVD but I sure want the whole movie in color. I LOVE all of James Cagney's movies but this is my favorite. I haven't missed a single 4th of July without watching this great movie. I used to watch it with my dad every year growing up.. He is no longer with me but I still watch it pretending I am curled up next to him. James Cagney at his best. Thank you for sharing
We had a 49 star flag for one year, from July 4, 1959 to July 3, 1960. I was born in January of 1960, under the 49 star flag, even though we had 50 states admitted to the union. I still have the 49 star flag that was given to me by my Great-Grandparents. The 48 star flag had officially flown for 47 years since the addition of two stars in 1912 for the admission of New Mexico (47th) and Arizona (48th). Each new flag design is approved, and first officially raised over Fort McHenry, Baltimore, Maryland on the next Independence day, July 4th. Since the 49th State, Alaska, was admitted on January 3, 1959, the 49 star flag was approved and raised July 4, 1959. The 50th State, Hawaii, was admitted on August 21, 1959, but the 50 star flag was not officially raised at Fort McHenry until July 4, 1960.
Barbara Huck : What are they afraid of ???? Answer : Crybaby "Woke" Extremists on the far left shouting and throwing a tantrum against the US flag and people being patriotic of the United States which the far left hate with a passion.
Patriotism became obsolete since our leaders became more intrested in themselves instead the country. Greed and self intrest is spreasing through the government like wildfire.
Patriotism isn't obsolete. It's the same as it has always been in this country. Oppose authoritarianism and would-be tyrants. Defend liberty. Neither political party really stands for much but themselves right now, but at least the dems don't seem to want to end the republic.
It's a shame that if somebody tried to do this now you would be called a Nationalist. Honestly it's just a catchy song and a swell performance. An age that we probably won't experience again. Long live America.
People refuse to accept there is a difference between nationalism and patriotism, and it drives me insane. I’m 26, and personally my life is going pretty good. I have accomplished a lot and managed to not only survive on my own, but own a small piece of land. I’d give it all up for poverty to live in this America. Those of you who can reminisce on this time just have to deal with seeing it fade. I will have to deal with this new reality for my entire adult life. This is not the America I was promised as a child. It’s a nightmare.
God Bless America and Grand Old Flag have always been my two favorite patriotic songs. They are both uplifting. And yes...I watch Yankee Doodle Dandy every 4th of July.
Everyone seems to think you can only either be ashamed or proud, but that's BS. Americans have always had numerous reasons to be ashamed and numerous reasons to be proud. We're one of the first secular democracies on the planet (a secular, liberal, democratic, federal republic). No official church, just worship how you want. No king or queen, just democratically elected representatives. We've put men on the moon. We've created a MUUUUCH more reasonable working environment for our labor than what came before. We created one of the world's strongest economies. But we've also massacred huge numbers of innocents. We had an entire slave race that still isn't viewed as equal. We've participated in unjust wars as well as just ones. It's ok to acknowledge our shortcomings AND our strengths.
I think that it was pretty unlikely that this was filmed on the exact day that Pearl Harbor was attacked. December 7th, 1941 was a Sunday, and in that era, most people did not work on Sundays because it was considered a day of rest. But no doubt that it obviously affected EVERYBODY when it happened, and it certainly explains the strong patriotic overtones in the movie!
@Wagner PD You better study your history, pal. Japan has done some pretty savage things to people in other countries, during the course of its history! And we still have several sunken ships in Pearl Harbor to prove what Japan did to us back then!
