“I have great respect for the past. If you don't know where you've come from, you don't know where you're going.” - Dr. Maya Angelou.. watch my Pearl Bailey video next

We'd visit for coffee in DC I remember we'd wait to use these phones you paid to call long distance ...
Just wondering if you could do a video on Hendrix? 👏🏻
@@heaven8639 yes,
HENDRIX 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
Maya came from a Brothel. That’s her past. Why can’t she simply Repent of this and say it wasn’t a good life choice? I hate when people don’t want to take accountability for their past choices.
If they EVER do a Pearl Bailey biography/biopic, I hope that they choose Queen Latifah to play her. I said it here FIRST!!🩷😉
Imagine not speaking for 5 years and then someday being one of the greatest speakers in history.
Truly inspirational for real
Ikr!!! ❤❤❤
@KarineAlourde yesss❤❤❤
Truly amazing 💯🙏🏽💖‼️
She was speaking, but only to her brother.
Her grandmother told her she was gifted for speaking and believed she would be speaking around the world ! If her grandmother could’ve seen how far her words went .
Beautiful!!!👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
Her grandmother knew. She didn't need to see. But, wow, would she have been so proud.
Her grandmother already knew, because it was in their blood. ❤
She prolly saw it first 😭
It ain’t how you start, it’s how you finish! Everyone has a past.
This is true
This is so..... Very TRUE!
💯 so folks get to a point where they do the best they think they can or work with what they know.
O can see why she and Oprah became close. I heard she was a m Madamm
So true
We had Maya Angelou as a stamp in Ghana 🇬🇭
We love her immensely.
To us, she’s our Ghanaian Auntie
Hmmmmm she never went back to an African.
@@johnashton4776after all this, that’s what you got? After being raped and mistreated by several black men, I can understand
I feel like Maya was one of the very few people who told it to Oprah straight and Oprah actually listened to her.🖋
Yup! She was Oprah’s mentor and Oprah had a lot of respect for her ❤
@@KarineAlourde well deserved 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
Maya and Tina turner were the only ones Oprah never interrupted and actually intentionally listened to

I love how you told the story of Dr. Maya Angelo. Oprah listened to know one but her. I like them both. 📝 📝
Considering the dark events in her childhood, this doesn't surprise me. What matters most is how Dr. Maya Angelou would EXCEL in her career as a BRILLIANT poet and writer. May she continue to rest in peace. 😔🙏🏾❤️🕊️

"I once was lost, but now I am found" - unfortunately - some will NOT be so lucky in "this" lifetime...
I was fortunate to acquire tickets to see Ms. Angelou in Ann Arbor, Michigan - October of 2007 - BLESSINGS to her in the afterlife ✨🥰💫
I love this . She was a WHOLE person.
Yes amen🙏🏽
She was real. She embraced her humanness, strengths and weaknesses. A courageous woman she was. May she rest in peace
There is nothing wrong with being ashamed of one's actions in the past, the blessing is living and learning from it.
💯💯‼️
Christians like to teach shame. She probably did what she had to do to survive, then was able to improve her life. Keep your self hatred to yourselves.
Right on point!!!! 👍
Should you be ashamed of it though? It’s your history. Your past is what makes you uniquely you. Shame feels like you have something to hide. You can accept your past and move forward without being ashamed of where you came from.
AGREED.
It doesn’t make me not respect or see her any less.🤷🏽♀️
Would you say the same about a pimp?
@@purplelove3666 I stand on what I said. Who are you the moral police? Just say you don’t know what else this woman has contributed to society besides one of this circumstances in her past.😏
@@purplelove3666pimps exploit women. She did the sex work herself too, she didn't just profit off of women she abused. You really can't compare the two.
@@kylealexander1296Everyone has a past. Everyone has experienced pain. Its not to stupid to question if a person has the same “empathy” for a pimp that exploits an innocent/weaker person that they have for a madame doing the same thing. If it’s acceptable for one than acceptable for all.
If that's what you think or feel then why even bother to comment??? If you are not a fan or have no interest in this exceptional woman why speak on it? who cares how you see her it doesn't take away from her greatness..
I'm far from Maya but I am very honored we share a birthday and I've self published my own poetry book called A Black Girls Tears mainly inspired by her and how open she was with her struggles... Continue to rest in peace Dr Maya Angelou 🖊️🖊️🖊️📝📝📝
Congratulations! Do you sell autographed copies?
My mom and I met Maya Angelou back in 1984 during Black History Month we were talking to her and she was talking to us and I shook her hand and she told me to read her book I know why the Caged Bird Sings I will never forget that moment such a remarkable and kind woman😊❤ I'm so happy I had the opportunity to meet her.
I love how her son rides for her!!
He passed
I had the absolute pleasure of seeing her read and speak in the late 1990s. I think she received 5 standing ovations that night. We did not want her to leave nor that night to end. I was a teenager and it was life changing. The world lost a true gem but her story is a true testament that you can rise above your start in life. Thank you for sharing Maya with others💕🌷🕊💗🗒🖋
What a beautiful experience and memory of history to give to your children and grands.
What a blessing!!!
🪄Just an FYI Ms. Alourde, the part I saw MsAngelou wasn’t insisting she be referred to as Doctor but Ms. Angelou. She was talking to a young girl and said how she deserves that level of respect. I love you presentations . It shows off your personality.
I had the pleasure of seeing Dr. Angelou do a live speaking and reading event. The sports center was packed to capacity. The way she captivated the room is unmatched. She was an open book, leaving nothing out. I walked out forever changed. She was so gifted.
Dr. Maya Angelou is a singer, dancer author, and poet. There will be no one else ever like her ever again🎶💃✍️.
There are some people who lived that she herself didn't know of. There are lots of people like her in Africa.
*Ms Maya Angelou. She has no doctorate
She was a survivor, she certainly had many tragic things happen to her but she wasn’t a quitter, she had strength an she did what she did to survive. Her life may have tragic parts but because of her experiences an the fact she did not have a victim mentality she persevered an became this awesome human being. Thanks for sharing that I always loved her but now I also admire her
Yes she truly was a survivor hopefully her story will help others
WHERE ARE THESE FATHERS DURING THESE TIMES? WHAT WELFARE TOOK THEM OUT OF THE HOME THEN?
She was incredible
When you mentioned the part about her silence it was so relatable but in a different way for me. I was silent after feeling no one would believe me. As difficult as it has been I've learned to speak up. Saying something early on prevents it from happening to others.
This is the first time seeing Maya as a younger woman. Such a beauty! She went through so much, and made something positive out of her life. I am pretty new to your channel, and feel like I have so much to catch up on. It feels like you have done a lot of in-depth research on all of your subjects.
When I was 15, I remember telling my mother I wanted to meet her but shortly after that, she died :( I will never forget that day. My mother was picking me up from after-school activities and when she told me I was so heartbroken.
I felt the same way too. I wanted to meet her so bad. I just didn't know how to make that happen. I was randomly thinking about her one night. Woke up in the morning feeling terribly sad, like something wasn't right in the world. It was that day, I heard she had died....

Pearl saw the stardom in Ms. Mya and feared her place.
Pearl Bailey must have suffered from self hate to reject her. Striking resemblance if you ask me🖊🖋
Yes, my first thought was that Pearl Bailey needed to have her eyes checked.
Not sure why they are celebrated
Maya Angelou was the the first writer to make me believe in writing. The way her words pierce right through your heart is something I can only hope to obtain! As a writer myself, her legacy reminds me to remain true to myself so I can remain true to others. RIP Dr. Maya Angelou ✒️

✍️ She’s one of my heroes. RIP to a literary phenomenon
She said to refer to her as “ Ms. Angelou “ she didn’t say “ Dr. Angelou” (18:00) 😊 ether way people of her day were serious about showing respect to your elders ( as it should be).
I caught that too!
Rt. She was correcting her on how to talk to her elders. She said nothing about being a dr.
I remember when you couldn't say she and he, you had to address people with their titles.
Yeah, I caught that too!
And to my knowledge I thought you couldn't/can't just use the (Dr.) credentials and not have earned it or at least have an honorary doctorate.
We need to go back to correcting the youth this way… I’m constantly correcting my son and nephew. The resistance tho
Maya Angelou's eloquent words and profound wisdom became a guiding light in the darkest corners of my life, offering solace and strength when I needed it most.
Me too! Keep shinning! ❤
Her grandmother, she should have a video done on her!, she sounds so amazing strong smart even clairvoyant ! Thank you for this wonderful video
Maya Angelo truly changed my life. I learned so much about myself and life through her words.
I said. A lot of stars/people in that industry were in THAT lifestyle in some shape or form. It’s how they are able to afford to attend the auditions, get plastic surgery etc to begin with.

Yes she corrected the young lady by instructing her to address her as Ms Angelou. I was taught to address my elders in this manner. It’s all about respect.
It's not what she said, it's how she said it.
I had a brief but beautiful encounter with Dr. Maya Angelou in NYC, outside of Barnes and Noble a few years before she passed. She, along with Toni Morrison, is one of my inspirations. Much love to her always ❤✍🏽❤

So Pearl Bailey thought she was a beauty queen huh? Imma stick with the phenomenal women.

Listening to this story, makes me realize just how strong she was. The ability to try and be a positive role model for people and show them the truth of where they were, and how they got to where they are should be embraced instead of frowned upon.
INDEED!
You did an amazing job. I must say I did not realize the breadth of her work, so thank you. Well done! This has academic value and I will use in my comp. classes. ✒️📝
My mom told me that after reading one if her books...she actually wrote about it.
Yes she kept it real. That’s one thing that really makes me admire her cause she never tried to present a perfect image
It's in her second autobiography Gather Together in My Name. Read it ASAP! 🖊 ✍
There is nothing better than being honest. I can relate. Her brilliance transcends cultures and time. A great loss to the world when she passed. And still I rise is the story of my life! I love her!

I am such a fan of yours. Most of the time I'm not writing comments because I'm in bed watching my TV mounted on the wall. I learned things I never new. I LOVE Maya so much. She's a great inspiration in my writings. Thank you Sis!
I am so grateful to have heard Dr. Maya Angelou's amazing voice in person. She was mesmerizing. The funny thing is I don't recall much of what she said but I know how I felt. Dr. Angelou once said:"A person may not remember what you said or what you did. But they will always remember how you made them feel." Phenomenal Woman.
I appreciate what Dr Angelou said to the young woman about addressing by her first name. I too find it so disrespectful whether it's a stranger or a known person. Unless one has permission, adressing a person by ms. or dr. or auntie shows respect. Thus said, Ms. Alourde, thank you for your videos. They are so well made, providing history & truthful facts in a non salacious manner. Please continue to shine a light on these wonderful, inspirational women/people.❤🖊️
so you need permission to address someone by their first name ?? what planet are you both from ??
@@jonpark5203What planet are u from simpleton? It's considered rude to address someone male or female that u don't know even if they are a public figure!! I totally agree with you- when I started teaching law at the University level I had one of my students address me by my first name and I was so taken aback I couldn't immediately reply. When I did get my bearings I informed that young man that my first name was reserved for friends and family and that he didn't fall into either category...smh
Loved this one. I mean I enjoy all of these videos but Maya Angelou's life and legacy was so impactful to me during girlhood. It's nice to see that she didn't shy away from her truth, from being a REAL person who made REAL choices, regardless of public shame that others might find or say. That to me made her more profound, the fact that she never pretended to be perfect, and yet people still admired her brilliance. RIP Dr. Maya Angelou❤

Typical aries traits
How embarassing that Maya Angelou insisted on being called "doctor Angelou" when she had no college degree, no master's degree, and no doctrate degree. Seriously. That's the most shocking this in this video. Her PhD is honorary, not something she earned after 8 years of education and research, culminating in a thesis. The vast majority of professors I had at UC Berkeley had at least one, if not TWO doctorate degrees, and post-doc education as well and only one of them wanted to be called "doctor". That "one" professor was a bitter old narcissist who needed everyone to believe he was superior to them.
Ms. Angelou doesn't lose my respect for being a sex worker or madame, especially after the traumatizing childhood she had. She loses my respect for insisting on being addressed by a false title for an education she never earned. Today, that is considered fraud, and it was fraudulent for her to misrepresent herself as a highly educated woman with multiple degrees back then, too. She didn't even attend a community college much less have an undergraduate, masters, or doctorate degree.
An honorary doctorate is what they gave the Scarecrow in the Wizard of Oz, that is how meaningless an honorary doctorate is. That is so disturbing to learn that about her. smh Makes me wonder if Ms. Angelou was a narcissist herself, and it would certainly explain why she went into prostitution. It's a characterological disorder and they can be quite sexually promiscuous and deviant, and they are known to steal honor, valor, and educational accomplishments (buying fake degrees) they've never earned. It's common enough that the US Military charges people with "stolen valor" because narcissists so commonly try do this.
Ms. Angelou was a very compelling writer. She didn't need to fake an education. She insisted on being called "doctor" for her own ego and that is extremely off-putting. It does not take away from her strong storytelling ability, though. In fact, many writers, famous and unknown, are narcissists because they are so good at weaving tales.Lying is like breatheing to narcissists. They are masters of false narratives. That said, it's hard to imagine that a narcissist would tell the world she was a prostitute or a madame, though, because they are all about "keeping up appearances in public" and worrying about what others think of them.
She was a gifted, influential writer. She didn't need to go to college to become that.
Did something so minuscule require to write a whole novel of a comment?
Bill Cosby also was another dubious recipient of an Honorary Doctoral Degree, that fits in perfectly with your discussion of its appeal to narcissists. For a time after receiving it, he also insisted on being addressed as Dr. His nefarious actions and self-serving criminal behaviors made him even less deserving of the Honorary Degree.
Yeah I agree on certain points with insisting on being called a Doctor when she didn't have even a college degree.
Wow! the pressure one must have felt to approach her in public.
That must have made it intimidating to even ask for her autograph because, what were you going to say to her if you were a shy quiet person who may have just simply liked her but just wanted to converse with her or get an autograph?
Plus why did she feel the need to go into prostitution knowing what she said to the young girl that she is so much more than just Maya?
It's kind of unclear also that she was a madam and she ran with her son because she didn't want to get into trouble. Was it a Hollywood couch kind of madam? Or one that set up liaisons with young school age kids and older men?
I would have liked the narrator to delve better into specifics despite some people not wanting to hear that she had a deviant side.
Wow I change my mind about how I felt about her now.
Wow, I didn't know that about her............ she's giving me the courage to sit down and finally write about my 53 yrs I've experienced. I want to say thanks for your inspiring video 🖋️
