  • Watch the new TyFlow tutorial for 3ds max covering how to create lightning effects with tyflow.
In the meantime - Click here to subscribe so you don't miss out on future videos: tinyurl.com/al...
Check out the tyflow lightning tutorial - this is a 3ds max tutorial on how to create lightning effects procedurally through advanced particle features and dynamics. Whether it's lightning or electricity effects, you can create tyflow destruction and realistic effects simulation.
This is for 3DS Max 2020 and 3DS Max 2019.
This also touches on 3ds max vray rendering (chaos group) and other vfx related topics for cgi.
I plan to put out multiple tutorials around this, so this isnt necessarily a tyflow beginner tutorial but similar to the avengers vfx beakdown I did on for my 'Allan McKay Inner Circle' that you might have seen previously.
The same process can be created for Houdini or Maya, cinema4d or Blender 3D or other packages. So as much as this is a tyflow vray tutorial it is also a all round visual effects tutorial.
As an FXTD this is critical for many shots whether it's thor or thanos portal or other marvel avengers vfx that we want to create.
You can tie this effect into Chaos Group PhoenixFD for some really amazing effects.
Make sure to check out my tyflow ash tutorial here -
and my tyflow sand tutorial and others are on my CZcams channel
Definitely a great step to building your fx reel as an fx artist and make sure to check out the other vfx tutorials on 3D computer animation tyflow smoke grains destruction and more.

I hope I'm not commenting too early but here goes...
I'd really like to incorporate this into a reel for one of my releases with 2 additions..
    1) is there a way to have the particles on the ship and frame move slightly along an edge whilst the lightning is active, (giving a bit of motion to the lightning.. Think terminator 2 / 3 intro scenes or a tesla coil)
And 2) have the lightning arc slightly between the two points instead of being in such a straight line
Great tutorial dude, subbed and hoping to join patreon or wherever you said the private group is 🫶🏻

Havent even watched the whole video but I know its gonna be gooood!! Coincidentally, I've been trying to learn my way around Houdini and am learning how to create lightning there too haha! Although 3ds max tyflow and Houdini are really different softwares, I'm pretty sure the concept should be same. Right?
Anyway, just wanted to let you know that I'm learning Houdini thanks to your advice you've given me in your last video so yeah :) Hope I dont abandon that beast of a software like I've done so many times in the past haha!

That's great Eric! Yeah honestly they're all the same concepts. I was able to pick up Houdini extremely fast because I had done so much in max prior. It meant instead of struggling with how something works, it's more "where's this feature" in the interface.
Good luck! I'll be putting out some Houdini tutorials shortly too in January

I've noticed 3 things about lightning/big electric maybe it helps.
    1. The bolt rises. The air superheats, and like arcing big transformers, the electric Sparks tend to drift up.
    2. The heat creates intense intra turbulence, so a smooth bolt of lightning very quickly becomes jagged and kinked and ropy as the air is violently disturbed.
    3. The spark changes color temperature with time, going violet to orange as it cools.

I might try making lightning hit on invisible character, and spread all over it's body. Probably "position transfer" could be very handy if character is animated.

in this tutorial the child particles (particles on the surface of the ship) do not seem to stick and move on along the animation of the ship. I think locking the particles and redirecting the parent particles (wood particles) to stick to their respective points and generate the Electric arcs based on those very points would come off as something more natural. is there a way to achieve this in Tyflow?
